Android 17 stood by and watched the demolition crew finish wiring the last of the bombs to base of the condemned building. He had taken shelter in the city around a week ago, and people all over town were talking about the buildings future demise. He planned on leaving the day before, but he couldn’t say no too seeing a little destruction.

“Exciting isn’t it,” a fat man leaned over and asked Android 17. “It’s not every day you get to see something this cool.”

The man starred at Android 17 awaiting a response but received none. The man’s excited face quickly dissipated and was replaced with a look of disgust.

“You know it’s rude not to answer someone when they are talking to you,” he stated. “God, it’s people like you that someone needs to teach a lesson. Getting that pretty little face of yours smashed to hell might teach you a lesson.”

“Shut the hell up old man or I’ll replace one of those bombs you see with your body.” Android 17 exclaimed.

Quietly, the man turned around and began looking for another place to watch the demolition of the building. The sound of horns and sirens echoed through the air as the demolition team began pulling their men out of the area. Groups of people began flocking towards the area because they knew the building would soon be destroyed. The demolition crew was finally in the safe zone, and everyone began waiting for the bombs to explode. A few minutes passed, and the ground suddenly shook. Everyone watched as the building buckled and began to fall; however, the building began falling towards the local hospital nearby.

Android 17 laughed as he watched the people around the hospital scatter like cockroaches. After what seemed like only a second, the condemned building careened into the hospital. He started jogging towards the hospital in order to get a better look and was nearly hit by an old woman in a truck. She swerved to avoid hitting 17 and nearly crashed into a tree nearby. By the time he arrived at the hospital, fire trucks were everywhere. Android 17 overheard a conversation two firemen were having with each other.

“We can’t go in sir,” a fireman said to the chief. “It’s way too dangerous.”

“Damn it,” he yelled. “Those people are going to die if we don’t help them, but I don’t want to risk the lives of twenty men only to save a few.”

Android 17 began to laugh as he walked away. He couldn’t believe that the toughest men in the city were unable to save a few people because they were scared. He began to laugh even harder but was suddenly distracted by a yelling man.

“600 zenni….600 zenni to the man who gets my daughter out of the hospital,” the man cried. “Someone please save my daughter!”

Although the thought of helping people made 17 sick, he knew he needed the money. He turned around and sighed. He walked over the crying man, grabbed him by his shirt, and lifted him into the air.

“I better get my money,” he demanded.

He did not wait for the man to give his response, and threw him to the ground. Android 17 raised both hands and started firing multiple ki blasts into the side of the hospital...

Android 17 stopped firing once the wall was no longer present and rushed inside. Clouds of dust filled all of the rooms after the adjacent building fell on top of the hospital. He couldn’t see anything inside of the building, but he could hear screaming in every direction.

“The money almost isn’t worth the trouble,” he though to himself.

He convinced himself that this task would a lot easier than he assumed it would be, and he continued his search of the building. One of the screams he had heard earlier got louder when he opened the door to a room on the first floor. Sunlight emitting from one of the windows in the room made it much easier to see the old women who sat in the corner. Her leg had been crushed by a piece of rubble that fell through the story above her, and she was unable to move. Android 17 ran to the injured women and carefully picked her up.

“Thank you so much,” she cried. “I was almost sure I would die in this awful place.”

Before she could say anything else, there was a loud explosion in the south wing of the hospital that rattled the building’s foundations. Shortly after, Android 17 heard the ceiling above him begin to crumble, so he quickly jumped out of the window nearby before the ceiling collapsed on top of the room’s occupants. The women began screaming once again when she realized that they were flying through the air. The women’s screams annoyed 17, so he set her down on the ground once they were several hundred feet away from the building.

He heard her utter some words when he was headed back towards the hospital, but he didn’t care what she had to say. On his way back towards the building, he could feel a great amount of heat. His eyes opened wide as he soared above the hospital only to discover that the explosion he heard earlier also caused a fire that was spreading….and spreading quickly.

Android 17 realized that he would need to hurry things up a bit if he planned on finding the girl out of all the people trapped in the building. He entered the hospital through a hole in the wall on the third floor and resumed his search. The dust that made it impossible to see earlier had begun to clear, and he could finally see his way around the halls. A few men and women ran passed him towards the stairs, but he saw no little girl.

One by one he began searching each room for the child but discovered that the third floor had basically been abandoned except for one room that was occupied by a teenage boy who was missing his left leg. Android 17 planned on letting the boy die, but there was something about him that caught 17’s eye. He rushed into the boy’s room and began to pick him up out of his bed.

“Stop,” the boy stated. “Don’t try to save me because I don’t want you too. Being dead will be better than living a life with one leg so just get the hell out of here.”

The boy reminded Android 17 of himself when he was younger, and he could see the fire in the boy’s eyes. Without wasting another second, he grabbed the boy by his arm and ripped him out of his bed. The boy started punching 17 with his free arm in a desperate attempt to escape his grasp, but he realized that it was no use. Android 17 raised one hand and fired a single blast at the wall creating another hole in the building. The boy’s mouth dropped as he sat there motionless, hanging off of Android 17’s arm.

“How did you…”

The boy’s question was interrupted when 17 tossed him out of the hole he had just created. The boy screamed as he fell towards the ground below. Android 17 jumped out of the window shortly after dropping the boy and caught him just before he nearly hit the ground. He set the boy down near one of the firefighters, and headed back towards the burning building but not before giving the boy some priceless information.

“Listen carefully and don’t ask questions,” Android 17 demanded. “In a few years from now, look for a man named Dr. Gero. He lives in the mountains and for the right price could fix that leg of yours in no time.”

The fact that the boy was so much like Android 17 when he was a teenager baffled him, but he realized he must focus on the task at hand. Android 17 ran back into the building, and the fire had consumed almost half of the hospital.

“Damnit girl, where the hell are you,” he screamed.

The smell of burning flesh replaced the dirt which he encountered when he first entered the building almost twenty minutes earlier. Strangely, the smell did not bother him at all. Android 17 made his way up and down the halls as he began his search for the girl once again. He found a few survivors in some of the rooms on the first floor, and he took them outside just like the others he’d saved. So far, he had saved a total of five people, but he couldn’t find the girl. He almost abandoned his search for the girl on the first floor until he heard a high pitched scream come from a room a few doors down. He made his way to the room and looked inside but found nothing except for a hospital bed.

He turned around and was greeted by a small blonde headed girl in a hospital gown. She looked about eight years old and had a wide smile on her face.

“Who are you,” she questioned.

“I’m the person who is going to take you to your daddy,” Android 17 replied. “So you need to hurry up and come with ok?”

“Daddy says I’m not supposed to talk to strangers,” she muttered as she ran around the corner of the hallway.

“Why you little shit,” Android 17 screamed.

He took off after the girl and rounded the corner where she had gone, but the girl was nowhere to be found. He searched to first two rooms where he thought she might have gone but found nothing. The fire raged on as it made its way down the first floor corridor towards 17’s location. He knew he needed to find the girl and get out of the building quick. The whole second floor still needed to be searched, so he decided to forget about the girl for now and search that floor instead.

“The girl can walk perfectly fine, so she should be able to get out on her own,” he thought to himself.

He ran in the opposite direction of the girl and up the closest flight of stairs to the second floor.

Android 17 finally reached the second floor which was in good condition compared to all of the other floors; however, there were nearly twice as many injured patients on this floor than on all the others combined. He became frustrated as it seemed every single room had someone in it that could not walk or was injured in some way.

“This is ridiculous,” he said to himself as he walked down the hallway carrying a young girl. “This crap isn’t definitely not worth what I am getting paid.

She glanced up and him with a confused look on her face, but he refused to acknowledge her presence. He carried her to an enormous gap in the wall that was caused when the building blew up and fell on this part of the hospital. He prepared to carry her to the ground like he had done to all the other survivors but noticed the firemen had set up a safety net to catch the people he had previously had to carry to the ground.

“So you humans are good for something,” he shouted angrily. “Maybe next time there’s a building on fire you can get your asses in here and do your job!”

He muttered a few more words and threw the girl out of the building onto the safety net. Android 17 felt as if a weight had been lifted off of his shoulders because he knew that the safety net would dramatically cut down on the time it would take him to get the rest of the patients out of the building. Nearly twenty minutes passed and the second floor was finally clear. He made a final sweep of the area to make sure that he left no one behind and then darted back down the stairs and outside. He glanced around looking for the girl, but she had not come out of the building yet. He clinched his fists together as stomped back into the building with one final mission on his mind. When he re-entered the building the first floor was overrun with flames….

Android 17 knew the amount of time he had to find the girl was nearly up. He jumped through a set of flames and dashed down the first floor hallway to girls last known location. He rounded the northwest corner and saw that the area was demolished and filled with debris. His sensory receptors went off as a set of flames crawled up his torn up jeans. He shook his leg until the fire was out and turned around to head back outside. The girl was most likely dead, and he couldn’t do anything to save someone he couldn’t find. He made his way towards a nearby exit but was interrupted by a cry for help.

“Help me,” the voice cried. “Someone please help me.”

The voice came from the second floor, and he knew exactly whose it was. The girl had obviously climbed the stairs to the second floor when he was occupied earlier. Android 17 covered his head and flew upwards crashing into the ceiling above. He landed safely in a room he had checked earlier except now the room was engulfed in flames just like the rest of the building. He could hear the girl coughing only a few rooms away from where he stood. He made his way out of the door and nearly reached the room where the girl had been trapped when the sound of gunfire filled the hallway. Standing behind Android 17 was a man dressed in a demolition’s crew outfit. He had a sad, solemn look on his face as he pointed the gun at Android 17’s chest. 17 could see the man’s hands shaking erratically as if had never held a gun in his life.

“I suggest you turn around and make your way back downstairs,” he warned. “I don’t have the time or the patience to put up with the likes of you, so do yourself a favor and walk away.”

“You ruined it,” the man shouted. “I’m the one that was supposed to save these people, not you!”

“Well it looks like you weren’t fast enough,” Android 17 replied. “I’m guessing by the outfit you are wearing that this whole thing wasn’t an accident was it?”

“So what,” the man stammered. “I disabled the bomb. I knew the building would do exactly what it did too, but I did it so I could be the hero for once in my life. I knew a few people were going to die, but it would all be worth the trouble in the end. I might finally get all the attention and respect I deserve, but you destroyed everything I had planned. You couldn’t just walk away from the situation could you?”

“Hey, I don’t have time for your pathetic stories,” Android 17. “I didn’t do this because I wanted too. I did this for money so unless you feel like giving me 600 zenni to walk out of here, I’m not going anywhere.”

Android 17 turned around and headed back towards the room where the girl was located, and he heard the man’s gun go off again. This time the bullet bounced off of Android 17’s back and into a wall. The surprised man assumed he missed and fired a few more rounds, but every bullet did the same as the first. Android 17 turned slowly turned around and glared at the man. He took a deep breath and started walking towards his new adversary. The man began to take steps backwards as 17 closed in on his position. The fire had spread to the stairs the man had come up earlier, so he had no way out of his predicament. The man dropped to his knees and pleaded with Android 17.

“Please don’t kill me,” the man begged. “I’m sorry I tried to hurt you, but I’m so tired of being a nobody. Dear god, I have a wife and two kids…I’m begging you please don’t kill me.”

Android 17 approached the man and wrapped his hand around the man’s neck. The man tried to say something else, but 17 tightened his grip and lifted the man into the air. He saw his victim’s eyes begin to water as he struggled for air. Android 17 could do nothing but smile as he saw the man’s eyes begin to close. Android 17 loosened his grip, and the man inhaled a life saving breath of air.

“No…killing you that way would be to painless,” he whispered to the man. “Besides, you have caused me way too much trouble.”

Android 17 moved the man towards railing to the second floor stairwell. The heat of the fire made the man scream out in pain. He struggled to free himself from Android 17’s clutches but knew he had sentenced himself to death by fire….

Although the man knew he would soon be dead, he raised his gun and fired multiple bullets at Android 17 until the clip was empty. The bullets did nothing to 17’s body, but they worsened his temper while he contemplated if this would be how the man died. He made his decision, and released the man’s neck which sent him plummeting into the fire below. Shortly after, he could hear the man screaming louder than anyone he’d ever heard before. The screams slowly got softer and softer until they had completely faded away. Pleased with himself, Android 17 laughed as he walked back towards room two twenty three. The girl’s cough could still be heard, and he was relieved to know that his paycheck was still alive. He finally entered and saw the girl balled up in the corner of the room.

“I found you,” Android 17 declared.

The girl lifted her head and noticed the man’s familiar face. She tried to stand up but was too weak to move. She tried once more but was still unable to move her legs. The smoke she inhaled made it hard for her to do almost anything.

"I can’t move my legs,” she moaned.

Before Android 17 got a chance to pick up the girl, there was a booming sound that came from above. He braced himself as the building shook but collapsed to the ground when parts of the ceiling gave way and crushed his body. He lay motionless while more debris and rocks continued to pile up on top of his body. He lost his view of the girl as more and more stuff fell from above, and he could no longer hear or see anything by the time it all stopped. Android 17 was left in complete darkness without the knowledge of whether or not the girl had lived. Because his hands were trapped underneath his body, the ki blasts he fired would hurt him and nothing else. He tried to wiggle around, but the weight on top his body made it impossible to do anything. Although he was the one trapped at the moment, all he could do was hope that the girl survived the ordeal.

“I deserve more money for this shit,” Android 17 thought.

He couldn’t help but smile at the predicament he had got himself in. Meanwhile, the girl starred at the large pile of rocks that covered Android 17. She pulled herself towards his location and tried removing some of the rocks that were light enough lift. After five minutes of removing rocks, her head hit the ground as she passed out.

Android 17 listened intently to the sound of rustling above him when it suddenly stopped. He assumed it was the girl considering there was no one else in the building; however, he panicked when the sound stopped. His eyes were now coated with dust from the debris, and his sight was basically gone. He took a few deep breaths as he devised a plan to get himself out of this situation. He went over the plan a few times in his head because he knew everything had to be perfect.

He concentrated his energy as he did his best to ease himself into a meditative state. He felt energy pulsate throughout his body. He continued to do this for several minutes until he maximized the amount of energy he had stored in his power core. In one quick motion he expended almost every bit of energy he had into using his elbows to push himself off the ground. His rocks moved as his body rose a few inches into the air, and he freed his right hand. He quickly placed his palm against the floor and used all his remaining energy to fire one large ki blast. The blast obliterated the ground below, and he fell to the first floor. Before he hit the ground, he tried to fly away from all the debris that would soon follow but only made it a few feet before the rocks covered his body. Once again the weight sent him spiraling towards the ground before trapping him yet again. However, the weight on his body felt much lighter than before, so he struggled to set himself free but was unable.

“This is ridiculous,” he yelled.

Android 17 could no longer control his anger as he thought about being helpless. He screamed as he tried to force his hand through the rubble and was finally successful. He felt a sense of relief when he used his free hand as leverage to help pull himself out of the rocks. He stood up and removed the dirt from his eyes as he searched for the girl. He found her lying on top of the pile of rocks that had trapped him before. He scooped her into his arms and darted to the closest exit.

“It’s finally over,” he praised.

A group of firefighters swarmed Android 17 as he exited the building, and they took the girl from his arms. He looked around and was shocked to see nearly a thousand people outside of the burning building. News crews were everywhere, and they all rushed Android 17 as he walked towards the man to collect his money. The mob of newscasters encircled the hero and began bombarding him with questions.

“How does it feel to be a hero,” a fat woman asked as she wrote on a notepad. “I mean that is a pretty brave thing that you did back there. You saved eighteen people from a burning building…how does it feel?”

He pushed the people out of the way and walked up to the girl’s father who cowered as he approached. Android 17 said nothing; instead, he raised his right hand and opened his palm. The man reached into his back pocket and pulled out a large bag of zenni. He opened the bag and pulled out the amount he owed Android 17.

“Thank you for saving my daughter,” he exclaimed. “She’s the only one I have left.”

The man came close to handing Android 17 his money, but he stopped when the chief cried out.

“The girls not breathing,” he stuttered.

A man wearing an EMT shirt began doing c.p.r. on the girl. The girl’s father dropped the zenni and ran to his daughter’s side.

“I think she inhaled too much smoke,” one the crew members stated. “She does look pretty banged up, so it could be a number of other things as well.”

The dad grabbed a hold of his daughter’s hand while the man continued trying to save the girl’s life. Nearly a minute passed and it seemed that the girl wasn’t going to make it. The man tried one more time, and he was successful. The girl coughed as she filled her lungs with air. Her dad turned around silently thanked Android 17 for the good work he had done. 17 did nothing but knell down and collect his hard earned reward. His body was worn down, and he could barely move. He stood back up and walked away from the mob of people before they could swarm him again.

“I need a vacation,” he told himself.
