Krillin walked the familiar white steps. He'd been here before. Only once but it had been enough to keep him away for some time. A black man approached him. Despite their blank expression, he had kind eyes. "Kulilin," he said, "what brings you to the Lookout? Its been some time since your last visit."

Krillin put down the nap sack he'd been carrying. "I need training."

The black man's face made a small shift. "I see...Walk this way, please," he added, gesturing toward a room. Krillin knew the one. The pair walked in silence until they reached the poorly lit room. Of the many oddities there the only thing that held Krillin's gaze was a large pendulum, swinging from the ceiling. Lazily, it completed on cycle only to begin another then another again and again until the end of time...

"Are you nervous?" Krillin was dragged out of his musings by the black man's voice.

"It doesn't matter," said Krillin shaking his head. "Let's-let's get this over with."

The black man nodded and gestured towards the center of the room. Krillin walked there, trembling as he did. "Are you certain you do not wish to postpone this?" The concern in the black man's voice was obvious now. "I am certain Kami-sama will not mind."

Again Krillin shook his head. Closing his eyes he whispered, "Let's do this."

"Very well. Clear your mind. You will now enter a deep trance that will transport you through time and space. When you awaken you will be on the planet Arlia. At your point, three armies will converge. Defend your fortress. Are you ready? One. Two. Three."

Krillin's eyes popped open. A large mantis-like creature stood at his side, completely nude except for a breastplate with a sun insignia carved into it. *Sire,* it asked, *Are you ill?*

"No," Krillin answered staring out a window. He surveyed what was left of his castle. What once had to be beautiful architecture, now lay in shambles. The only things unharmed were the walls themselves. Thank heaven,[I/] thought Krillin. "Nerves."

The mantis's features relaxed into what Krillin understood to be a grin. *Of course. You are still young, sire. Why don't we review the situation? That always calmed me down in my younger years.*

Krillin, grateful for the opportunity to find out what was going on, consented.

A rare mineral had been discovered in disputed territory. The North Kingdom, having the nearest fort, claimed the site as its own. The East Kingdom, who funded the settlement where the mineral was discovered, claimed the North Kingdom had no right to that mine. Words crossed and soon swords followed. Long standing treaties surfaced and the West, Bank and Lowlands (that Krillin was now defending) Kingdoms were dragged in. After six bitter years, peace negotiations began. But sadly, before any signing could take place, his highness, the Archduke, heir to Northern Lands, was attacked and killed on his way to the Lowlands. The North King accused the other ruler of assassination and marshaled all the conquered kingdoms against. This was to be his mightiest attack. Two hundred thousand warriors converging on one spot. Krillin's.

*That's the situation, sire.* finished the mantis.

Krillin continued to stare out the window. Got my work cut out for me, he thought. "How much longer until they arrive?"

The mantis stared at the spot Krillin's eyes hadn't left. *Another week, at least, sire.*

Krillin shook his head. "You're information is wrong." The mantis did a double take. "There are at least a hundred thousand soldiers not two days from here. The forces you picked up were a distraction. Muster the warriors."

*But-that's not possible...*

"It is. You've been fooled. Muster the warriors," Krillin repeated, "we'll be the ones doing the surprising." The mantis didn't move. "Must I repeat myself?"

The mantis jumped, bowed and rushed screaming at several guards. Krillin giggled. "All that time with Vegeta is actually paying off. If only that worked on 18." Taking two steps forward, Krillin came upon a map of the region spread across a round table. "We're here so they must be there...If we go by boat, we'll be there by mid afternoon and come up behind them. We should be able to take out most of there men before there decoy team reach here. There power levels aren't that high but their numbers might make them a problem..."

Krillin watched the mantis-warriors file into their fastest boats. Already they'd had difficulties. Krillin had overestimated the amount of fighters each boat could carry and how many boats they had. They barely had enough for two companies, much less the better half of an army. After careful thought, Krillin decided only a few soldiers would lead the fight. The larger force would take their war ships and arrive much later. The leading companies wold lay an ambush and do all they could to hold them while the larger force approached from the opposite side. And because of the ambush's importsnce, Krillin himself would lead it. A few captains objected to this. In their eyes the most important was the lord's safety. To Krillin the most important thing was as few casualties as he could manage. Even if this wasn't what most people accepted as real, thousands dieing isn't something you get over easy when they're dieing for you. It isn't something you get over period.

Another problem was his warriors low powerlevels. Against so many enemies, it would have been nice to have a few hundreds. But, alas, no such luck. Their average was only a sixty. A respectable number but...Well, best to focus on battle strategies. Now, if we attack around midnight, Krillin thought as they rowed up the bank, not only will they be caught off guard but they'll also be a disorganized mess! But how to take out the guards...Guess I'll have to do it myself.

The banks weren't as dark or damp as its name implied. The trip wasn't so bad. As a matter of fact, if Krillin's stomach wasn't in notes, or his mind going over every possible way this could go wrong, it would have been pleasant.

*Fire!Fire!* screamed one soldier not Krillin's right. He was pointing to a small circle of smoke, no doubt caused by a campfire, could be seen beyond the woods.

"Here goes..."

The enemy camp wasn't as well guarded as Krillin had expected. Perhaps confidence in their element of surprise had given them a false sense of security. Or perhaps most just didn't want to be there, as most conquered people do. Whatever the case, removing wasn't an issue.

Everyone began to move. First slow, then fast, gradually the Lowland Army made their way to the previously selected tents; the officer’s tents. Screams were silenced mid breadth as swords past through stomachs and slit throats. Krillin’s soldiers were well into the killing when the alarm sounded., to late for the Northern Kingdom. The damage had been and was still being done. Without their officers, the already disheartened soldiers began to panic. Fearing a massacre, many fled into the woods. Others threw down their weapons and begged to be spared. Those who did fight were so tired they were easily overwhelmed or so disoriented, they couldn’t distinguish between friend and foe!

Krillin ignored these. His mission was to find the mantis in charge, kill him and be done with all this. (Already he missed 18 and their daughter, Marron.) A mission easy only in theory. At first Krillin thought the Northern King would be among the officers but though he fought and killed five warriors in King’s Garbs, none had been the real King. Then he tried interrogating the captains but all had answered *We don’t know!We don’t know!* To make matters worse, they weren’t lying. Krillin could tell by their Ki, they were being honest. Finally, he tried a formal challenge. Krillin sent one of the captains off to inform the king. That had been an hour ago. Either the page had been killed, or the King was a coward.

By day break, the Lowlands had taken the camp but the older soldiers knew it would be a short lived victory. The Northern warriors were still about, probably being gathered up for a counter attack. Krillin considered leading the Lowlands into pursuit but with so few men, and no efficient way of communicating between companies, he thought better of it. The only thing left to do was wait for reinforcements or the retaliatory attack.

The attack never came. Instead side warriors clad fully in armor approached. The center one spoke.

*Are you the Lord of the Lowlands?* He had a very commanding voice. Krillin's heart skipped a beat when he noticed the knights powerlevel. *Are you?*

Krillin smirked. "Yes, and you are?"

*King of the Northern Lands.* he announced with a regal air. *I have come to accept your challenge.*

Excellent! thought Krillin. He could end this entire war by just defeating his one mantis. True he had a high powerlevel, but Krillin had trained with Son Goku and Gohan. This guy wasn't going to beat him. "Well, I issued the challenge so you choose the weapons..." Krillin almost laughed. He was that excited.

The mantis waved a dismissive hand. *It matters little to me. I will not lose.*

Don't be to sure about that, buddy. "All right, then it'll be hand to hand." Krillin was satisfied to see the Kings companions exchange nervous looks. "Your companions don't seem so confident in your ability."

*Fools often don't,* he said with the same regal tone he did everything else. *If it is your wish to be beaten to death, I will grant it.*

Reminds me of Piccolo back in the day... Krillin thought as he stretched. A mantis doing lunges must be a very curious site because everyone, North King included, made small wtf? noises.

One concerned captain asked, *Sire what are you doing.*

"Nothing," Krillin said. All the staring had made him blush which of course made him give up on a proper warm up. Turning to the North King, "Let's go."

The North King threw down his sword and shield. Krillin assumed his favorite stance. The two stared at each other expecting the other to attack first. We've similiar fighting styles, Krillin made a mental note. Let's see how fast he is.

Krillin rushed forward throwing a mighty kick at his adversary. The King side stepped and threw a kick of his own. Krillin blocked, back flipped, put both hands cupped at his side. "Kame-ah-me-ha!" A beam of light shot from Krillin's hands at the mantis. It appeared to connect for a moment but then it passed through his body.

After image! Krillin just managed to put his hand up to catch the North King's jab. Dodging and blocking was all Krillin could do for the next dozen seconds. To an outsider it looked like the North King was winning. But the two combatants knew that at any moment Krillin could take the King down.

"That all you got?" screamed Krillin as he deliered a series of punches to the King's breastplate. His fist left huge impressions where ever they landed. The mantis just managed to get out of the way a well aimed roundhouse. Purple light formed around his mouth. Krillin had a pretty good idea of what was coming. His version of a strong ki blast. Krillin put his hands at his side again. "Kame-ah-me-ha!" The purple energy shot straight at Krillin connecting with Krillins blue beam. The two struggled for some time the King putting up a glorious fight. But in the end, Krillin's blast overwhelmed his and shattered the Kings armor. The King stood there for only a second before collapsing.

"I've won."

Suddenly the world shook and faded. Once again, a pendulum swung on the ceiling. The black man smiled at Krillin. "You've returned much sooner then expected," he said happily.

"I'm much stronger then I was before. Thank you, Mr. Popo."
