Krillin stared out into the see. He was going to be a father soon but he certainly didn't look it. Most men were either bouncing off the walls with joy or curled up in a ball wondering why they didn't listen to momma. Krillin did neither. It wasn't because he had made a conscious decision not to. He just couldn't figure out what he was feeling. So he decided to stare out into the sea. Sailors often said it held the answer to all of life's mysteries. Well, I better get them soon, thought Krillin. I can't even train anymore and 18 thinks I'm getting cold feat! He could still process guilt. Out of all the feelings it had to be that one. Why not relief or contentment. It had to be the one feeling that would exacerbate the situation.

Am I afraid? wondered Krillin for the hundredth time. I know I don't have the most experience with kids but I get along fine with Gohan. Maybe I'm scared I can't do it...raise. Krillin held the thought for a moment. No that can't be. I've wanted a family for to long. Ready or not, I will be a dad and a husband so it would be pointless. Gold strands of hair passed through Krillin's mind.

18, there's so much I want to give you but I-I can't. You never smile, you never laugh...Yeah you joke but you always sound above it all. As if the world meant nothing to you. What can I give to some one who doesn't even care for life? Can you feel, 18? Sometimes I wonder. Krillin has a vision of pale eyes lit up as two bodies mixing as they tumble onto the sand, laughing. You do feel. You're just not to good at showing. But how much of it is you and how much of it is, well, Gero? Do you love me , 18? Or do you just need a place to crash. That's what you said when you showed up unannounced. What, did 17's snide remarks finally get to you? chuckles I like to think it was me. Goku would and Gohan does. Why isn't that enough this time?

A beautiful blond woman with a growing stomach walks over to Krillin. She rest her head on his shoulder. "You used to stare at me all day," she says in a soft but taunting voice. Krillin takes the bait.

"Well you were a lot..." he pauses for dramatic effect, "thinner back then."

The woman's face spreads into a grin. "Yeah, bet I could still kick your butt!"

Laughing the two roll around the ground for a bit. Finally, the woman pins Krilllin beneath her. "We shouldn't over do it," he says laying a hand on her stomach. "Yeah," she agrees rolling off. His hands remain on her stomach. "Hmmm, you want that now?"

"What?" Krillin's voiced sounded as if it had been miles away. "No, just...forget it." He looks at 18. "Your beautiful, you know that?"

"I've got a mental tally of every time you've said that," she laughs walking towards the house. Krillin's eyes never leave her until she disappears behind the closed door. Then he turns them back to the sea.

"Yeah..."

"Kr-Krillin..." a soft voice behind him said. Krillin turned to see his fiancée, 18. She had the funniest look on her face. The kind people get from being presented with a situation so foreign, they can't even process it. "My water broke." The simplicity of the statement knocked the wind out of Krillin.

Regaining his breadth, he jumped to 18's side. "Just stay calm," he said. "Every thing's gonna be alright so stay calm." 18 gave her would be husband a look. He got the point. "Um, do you want a doctor?" Again, the look. Of course not. "Let's get you to the house."

Krillin made a motion, offering to carry her but 18 must have missed it. Slowly, she began walking towards the house with Krillin following at her heels. Once again he offered his arm for support. But, once again, 18 wouldn't look anywhere but at the door. "Master Roshi! Oolong!" Krillin shouted when they reached the threshold. 18 had refused his help the whole way. "18's water broke! We need clean sheets and hot water!' Sounds of feet moving came from the second floor.

"What's the hot water for?" 18 asked in the same soft voice she'd used before.

"No idea but that's what they say on T.V." 18's face betrayed a smirk before it grimaced. "Is the baby kicking?" Krillin asked.

Ignoring him, 18 walked over to the couch and set down. Her breathing was deep and slow. Krillin took her hand saying, "We'll get through this honey. Don't worry." The words had just escaped Krillin's lips when Roshi and Oolong stumbled onto the scene, each carrying a pail of water.

"I got the water, Krillin," they chanted in unison. They then turned and pointed accusing fingers at each other with perfect symmetry. "You were supposed to get the sheets! No you were! Ahhhhhh!" 18 had interrupted the conversation with a ki blast.

"Stay. Away. From me." Roshi and Oolong took one last look at each other before disappearing up the stairs. "Krillin..." 18's cheeks were beginning to turn paler then usual. "Get Bulma on the line."

"This isn't exactly her field of-"

"I DON'T CARE!" for the first time since Cell, Krillin heard 18 yell. Pausing for breadth, she eased her voice. "Get her on."

Krillin swallowed hard and began dialing the numbers. He took another look at his would be wife and saw something he had missed all those other times. Kami, how young was she when Gero took her?

Bulma couldn't be reached. According to her personal assistant, Ms. Brief, Master Vegeta and the infant Trunks were all on holiday had made it abundantly clear they did not wish to be disturbed. The young man gave his deepest apologies before hanging up.

Krillin put down the reciever. "We're on our own, honey," he said turning to face his would be wife. She was now on the sofa with her legs spread across the arm rest. Her face had become flushed and sweat was dampening her glorious blond hair.

"It's starting," she said. "I can feel it."

"Stay calm," Krillin said more to himself then her as he rushed over to his wife. Taking her hand he repeated it.

"I am calm," 18's voice just betrayed the smallest hint of annoyance. "Let go of me," she pulled her hand away. You should be down there waiting for the baby!" She pointed to the other end of the sofa. "What are you waiting for?"

"M-m-me?" Krillin stammered.

"Yes you," 18 couldn't hide it anymore. She was pissed. "You're the only one here and there's no way either of those perverts are gonna touch me."

"...Alright." Krillin positioned himself between her legs. "Ready?" 18 nodded. "Then push!"

Stay calm Krillin. Remember that summer you worked as an EMT, what did they tell you about contractions? Each contraction dilates the cervix. The cervix will have dilated approximately ten cm when the baby is ready. Krillin looked down. That had to be alt least 12 cms. Its supposed to take first time mother's longer! This is supposed be a day long process! 18's breathing was heavy and strained. Despite the absence of sound, Krillin could tell his love was under a lot of strain.

"She's coming," 18 groaned. "You should be able to see her."

Krillin was caught off guard. She? The head was coming out. "She's coming, 18! I can see her!" It was a perfect birth. No complications or problems with the baby at all.

"Krillin..." whispered 18. "Some thing's wrong." her eyes were half closed.

What? Krillin held the baby in his arms. Her breathing was normal. So was her heart beat. Then he saw 18. She was bleeding and even Krillin's limited knowledge was enough to tell him, this much wasn't normal.

"18!" Krillin almost dropped the infant when he saw the state 18 was in. Her already pale face had lost any sign of life. Her lips had turned purple and her breathing was almost gone. A pool of blood had already formed, staining the sofa. Hell, if it weren't for her still moving eyes, Krillin would have thought she had died. "18, say something! Anything!"

18's eyes rolled from the infant Krillin was holding, to the worried look on his brow. "Anything..." she giggled. Sarcastic sense of humor perfectly intact. She was definitely still aware of her surrounding so the blood loss wasn't so bad.

"My word," Master Roshi looked from the blood to the baby in Krillin's arms. "What happened here?" He and Oolong had come down when they heard Krillin scream.

Krillin smiled. "Hang tight, honey," he said handing over the baby to Master Roshi. "18's hurt. I'm going to get a doctor."

"No!" 18 had almost stood. She reached an upright position and then her strength gave in. "No," she repeated in a much weaker voice. "No doctors."

"18, you're bleeding! You need a doctor."

"Listen to Krillin," said Master Roshi, giving his finger to the child to play with. "He's seen his fair shares of injuries. He knows what he's talking about."

18 ignored the old man. "No doctors," she said to Krillin. "Please." It was the first Krillin had heard her beg.

"Okay, honey. I won't." Krillin walked stone faced to the door.

Still clutching the new born, Roshi asked just loud enough for Krilllin's ears only,"You don't mean that, do you?"

"Of course I do. Can't start a marriage on lies." Krillin smiled at his old master. "You told me that when we bought the ring."

"Krillin, don't be a fool. We both know she's dieing. If no doctors then what?"

"Well, I know a certain healer who brought me back from death more then once."

Roshi frowned. "Dende?"

"I figure he's gotta know someway to help her."

"She's not really human. What if he doesn't?"

Krillin looked out into the ocean. "Take good care of my little girl."

What if he can't help? The words kept repeating themselves. She's not human, Krillin. She's not even alive, not really. What if Dende can't help?

"Well whaddya want me to do?!" the tiny figure shouted at the night sky. Flying at twice the speed of any military jet, Krillin shot through the clouds, towards the ancient tower. "She's everything I've ever wanted. Even back when I was a kid, having a family was my dream. A wife, a kid to raise. Am I just supposed to walk away from that? Is that what you all expect?"

All this he said very fast, the sound coming back to him as he hit mach 1, then falling behind him as he hit mach 2. Maybe if he flew fast enough, he could outrun the answers...

Dende's home looked the same as it did the day the first Kamisama built it. White tiles lined a circular platform with a strange building in the center. This building housed wonders mortal eyes never see. And with good reason! The great and terrible, good and wicked, rested side by side within. Relics that could reshape a planet carefully guarded by the tiny god standing in front of Krillin. Dende, himself, was an unremarkable thing. Two antennae positioned on a hairless green head on a body not much bigger then Krillin's. When Dende smiled he revealing large fangs but even this couldn't shatter the picture of perfect serenity and kindness. However ordinary this god might be, he was, without question, good.

"Krillin," the innocent white eyes looked heavy with concern. "What brings you to the Lookout?" Krillin didn't speak a word. He just continued to stare at the tiny god who'd bowed his head and closed his eyes. "I see..." Dende sighed "Don't worry. If she can create life then she's still human. Just a little different from the rests." Tears obscured Krillin's vision. He'd have fallen to his knees if he didn't know how much Dende hated that kind of etiquette.

"Right," was what he said instead of the hundred prayers now running through his mind. "I'm faster, so I'll carry you." The tiny green boy, for he still was a boy, climbed onto the shoulder's of the veteran fighter and together they flew off towards Kamesennin's island.

Master Roshi was waiting for them when Krillin and Dende arrived. He still had the baby in his arms. She had taken to wriggling in search of food. Dende spotted this right away.

"The baby's hungry," he said in his serene voice.

"Is that what she wants?!" even now the old man managed to lighten the mood. "No wonder she's been going for my chest all day."

"Master, has 18 gotten...worse?" Krillin had to close his eyes to keep his voice steady. If they opened, tears would flood his vision.

Roshi frowned, making his ridiculous assume the persona of a wise man's. "No but she hasn't gotten better either. Bleedin's stopped, at least. Oolong's with her."

The four walked in silence, all but the infant lost in their own thoughts. One with melancholy eyes, another with an optimistic look and the tird cast down, blocked by two pieces of black glass.

As Roshi had told them, 18 was still on the sofa. (The pool of blood had disappeared into the green fabric.) Her eyes were shut. Whispering words of comfort, Oolong held her hand. He looked up from his task and smiled. "Hey, 18," he smiled, "Krillin's back. And he brought the new Kamisama!"

18 rolled her head in the direction of her fiance. "Hey."

Krillin actually laughed. "That's 18 for you." He walked over to her, taking Oolong's place in the process. "Hi. I brought Dende. He says he can help." 18 turned her eyes towards the small figure besides, Roshi. "Yeah, you remember him. Don't you?"

18 smirked, "Yeah, the little bold guy."

Dende smiled. "You're exactly how Krillin described you. Always on the offensive." 18 frowned and opened her mouth to respond. "Now, now, don't start. Now just relax and clear your mind." Dende placed his hands over her body. A thin layer of light covered them both. The natural paleness returned to 18's cheek, as did the redness of her lips. "That should do for now. Feeling better?"

18 opened her mouth to speak and Krillin's ears pricked up to listen. But all he heard was a voice in his voice command Krillin, we have to talk. Immediately Krillin knew it was Dende. He was the only person there, besides Master Roshi, with that kind of power. The message was recieved before it was sent, sent the next message. Some thing's wrong.

Krillin ushered Dende into the kitchen. The two stood silent for a moment. Only 18 and the baby's breathing (both had fallen asleep) could be heard. Even Oolong held his peace. "Krillin," the tiny god broke the silence, "I couldn't heal her. Not completely like she needs. I can't manipulate the inanimate and I think that's what's causing all the... problems." The god sighed. "I don't think Gero predicted one of his androids would go through child birth. Krillin," the tiny god said firmly, "she'll need someone with Dr. Gero's expertise. he needs a doctor. If she doesn't get one, her condition will regress within the next day."

Krillin stared blank faced towards the living room. If you knew how her insides worked...could you...fix them?"

"Krillin, I'm a healer not a mechanic-"

"Could you fix them?"

The two small figures measured up the other's resolve. In one, common sense told him this was to risky. Odds were there would be complications. Complications he could neither predict nor compensate for. In the other, his beloved's silent plea still rang clear. As did a deeper understanding of her fears.

"If I had someone with a lot of experience to talk me through it," the tiny god had decided middle ground was the best exit, "I should be able to. But," and here he lifted a finger for emphasis, "it must be someone can foresee anything that might go wrong. I need to be one step ahead of every problem if you want your fiancee returned whole."

Not since Hercules took the skies off Atlas's shoulders had such a sigh of relief been heard. "I'll get Dr. Briefs on the phone. He's just as good s Bulma and he's been doing this kind of stuff three times as long."

But Dende did not share Krillin's sigh of relief. Already the tiny god had realized how terribly he'd underestimated the situation. He had expected the problem to be with the human parts of Android 18, not the mechanical. His magic was strong but manipulating the non-living! That wasn't as easy as in the cartoons. It would require complete concentration. Even achieving a meditative state beforehand was no guarantee of success.

Staring as Krillin ask for Dr. Briefs, Dende silently prayed to his own gods that this doctor deserved Krillin's confidence. Otherwise their would be a dead body on both their hands.

Dende worked on 18 in the upstairs bedroom while Krillin paced the living room, (Staircase, look up, kitchen, open fridge, slam door, living room, door, watch the waves, sofa, staircase...He'd already completed six laps.). Lacking anything more productive to do, Oolong and Roshi followed him with their eyes. (They were a little behind. Only lap 4.)

Breaking the cycle, Krillin sat down on the sofa and crossed his legs. His breathing grew heavy. Nostrils flaring, his insides bubbled. "Why'd he ask me to leave?" he screamed finally. "I'm her husband! I should be there holding her hand. Dammit!" Here he stomped his foot for emphasis. The whole house shook with his mounting rage. "If anything happens and I'm not there...I'll never forgive myself. Or Dende for sending me away."

"Krillin, listen to yourself," Kamesennin had been watching Krillin's rising anger with equal measures of concern and understanding. How many times had he watched his students go off to fight unspeakable evils while he remained behind? Too many. But he had long ago realized he would be more of a handicap then anything else. " 'Never forgive Dende?' He's the Kamisama! He's done a great deal for this planet and for you personally! What he is doing is unheard of. The Kamisama coming down to help a mere mortal?! Can you think how great a personal risk for him this is? You are behaving like a child."

"So what if I am?!" Krillin shot back as he jumped to his feet. "It's my right isn't it?" The old man did not move. For a moment it looked as if Krillin might strike his master. But then the anger subsided and tears trickled down his cheek. "I'm sorry, Master Roshi. I'm sorry, Dende. I'm sorry, 18. I'm sorry, everybody. Th-th-this is all my fault. If I'd never-if I hadn't...18 would still be-"

"Part of the Red Ribbon Army." It had been Oolong who spoke. A pair of sunglasses and a pair of tear soaked eyes turned to look at him. "Remember how she was programmed to kill us? I wonder how she got rid of that."

Krillin smiled wiping a few tears away. "Thank you, Oolong." He didn't feel the need to mention that the programming only went as far as demanding Goku's death and that, without a prime objective, the Androids needed a substitute. Oolong's words meant that much to him.

It was near day break when Dende emerged from the upstairs bedroom. He looked as tired as any god can if taxed both mentally and physically with no rest. Something akin to bags had formed underneath his eyes and his shoulders were uncharacteristically low. But the young god was cheerful! Despite a heavy sigh, he was smiling. And the bags did little to mask the brilliant shine in his eyes.

"That went well," yawned the tiny god. "She'll be in bed for the next week while her living tissue repairs the mechanical but," the god stopped to consider his prediction, "she shouldn't relapse."

"Dende?" Krillin met him at the foot of the stairs. Of all his companions he alone hadn't slept. Vivid with concern, Krillin's eyes met the healer's.

"She's fine." This was the best part. First the shock (eyes broaden not sure how to respond) then the overwhelming joy (tears form; mouth sobs) and finally the passionate display of gratitude. (Krillin grabs the god's hands, Kissing each...Actually Dende had been hoping for a hug. The whole on knees thing was both cliched and over the top.) "Krillin! Let go!"

"Sorry, Dende," gratitude had preceded to giddiness. He was now half crying, half laughing. "May I- may I see her?" Krillin managed as he wiped the tears with his forearm.

"Of course, just be sure not to get her to worked up, okay? She needs rest," he added as the short fighter shot past him.

"No offense, Dende, but so do you!"

"None taken." Laughing to himself, Dende headed towards the door. What a day. This was the most strenuous six hours of his life since the battle on Namek. But he had never felt more like the true Kamisama. Not only because he had saved a child from growing up motherless. Or because of the happy couple who'd enjoy many more years together. But because he had finally been tested, he knew this job hadn't been a mistake. All his craft, all his art, all his guile, everything had been taxed to an extreme and he had succeeded. The affirmation was an incredible high.

18 was laying face up on their bed. Once again the unnatural paleness had taken her cheeks and the rose red of her lips gave way to blood purple. But she was healthy. Krillin could tell. Her breathing was normal (her body still used oxygen for ATP production even if it could do without it) and the features of her face had relaxed.

"God she's beautiful..." Krillin said those words every time he saw her sleeping or just laying still. 18 (tucking a loose strand behind her ear) often joked he had a flare for the rhetorical. Krillin liked those jokes.

Careful not to wake her, Krillin literally climbed onto the bed. Resting his head on one hand, he stroked the features of 18's face with the other. Perfect nose, perfect chin, perfect everything. What a gal...

During its voyage, Krillin's hand came across a loose hair ruining the perfection. Mimicking the motion her's did so well, his hand brushed the strands behind her ear just as the eyes opened. "Good morning," Krillin whispered as he kissed the perfect forehead.

"You're up early," the Android said weakly.

"You gave me on hell of a scare."

"Who, me?" Rolling onto her side, 18 pulled Krillin close. "You scare to easy, you know that?"

"I know." The couple held each other tight, feeling the warmth of the other's body. "Guess you'll have to teach our little girl how to be brave."

18 broke the embrace and sat up all in one motion. Pulling the sheet over her exposed front, she asked "Wherer is she?"

"Right here," Master Roshi said from the door. He'd waited a few minutes (three) just like Dende had requested. "She's been reaching for momma for some time now." The infant actually was grabbing in the direction of her mother. "Here we go..."

Taking the infant and placing it on her lap, 18 turned a cold pair of eyes towards the old man. "Well? What're you waiting for?" The forcefulness was back. "Get lost!"

Master Roshi jumped and scurried out of the room as fast as his short legs would carry him. Krillin threw his head back and laughed. So this is what a family is like.
