Guru's bodyguard usually never leaves his side. He has stood guard over the elder Namekian for years. But even the most devoted need a break once in awhile! Relieve him for a day and ensure Guru's safety. Who knows...maybe you might even have some action. They will only entrust this delicate job to a fellow Namekian.

His blood running hot, sweat soaking into his clothes, Nagol threw a trio of jabs intended to throw his opponent off balance. As expected, only one of them landed but it was just enough to give him the opportunity to sweep low and take out the legs his sparring partner had intended to stay standing on. With a nimble sidestep, his target evaded and managed to deliver a brutal series of kicks to Nagol's shoulders, neck, and head that left him momentarily dazed. Getting overzealous, the other student pressed his perceived advantage and tried to end the match with a roundhouse that would undoubtedly send the big Namekian sprawling. When the foot arrived, though, there was no satisfying impact with Nagol's face. Instead, there was a startling blur of motion that suddenly turned into a breath-stealing impact with the chest.

Unable to regain his balance, Nagol's opponent was completely unprepared for the savage barrage of elbows and knees that tore into his midsection and left him battered. With a final act of brutality, he slammed the top of his head into the battered Namekian's nose and thrust him to the ground. Even as the blood began to gush from the wound, the opponents' respective teachers bowed to one another and went to tend to their disciples.

"You have done well today, Nagol." Master Gnarl rasped, gripping the steel cane he bore both for support and defense. "Master Kinu's disciple stood little chance against you, and now you have won the privilege of acting as Guardian to the Guru of all our people for one day."

Nagol was at a loss for words. Since the age of fifteen, he had not once been allowed to leave the sight of the Master or one of his most trusted disciples. To be sent into the world like this meant only one thing: his time with Master Gnarl had come to an end, and he would need to find his own path in the world. Twenty years of training lay behind him, though, and there was little that he could expect to encounter that would be utterly insurmountable. Perhaps the time had come for a parting of ways.

Understanding his disciple's awe, Gnarl continued, "You have learned as much as you ever will under my tutelage, Nagol Rei. There are others in the world with more to teach than I, and the Guru knows more than any other. If you perform your duties honorably, there is a chance that he will teach you something of his arts. Now, go to the Guru - your presence will be required at sunrise, the day after tomorrow."

With a final bow to the man that had shaped the past twenty years of his life, Nagol turned and began his journey, to defend the Guru himself and find his own way in the world.

On the second day of his journey to the Guru's home, Nagol came across the largest village he had ever seen. More than fifty Namekian homes lay clustered together, with an utterly foreign square structure sitting on the outskirts. It was made all of metal and glass, with a smattering of strange symbols alongside those that were familiar to him. As he drew closer, Nagol realized that it must be one of the trading outposts that off-worlders sometimes set up to sell their wares to the Namekian people. Curious as to what sort of things might be found here, he stepped inside.

Having lived the life of an ascetic warrior for so long, the big Namekian found the vast array of items disorienting. Over here were little white headbands with purple lenses designed to cover one eye; over there were suits of armor made of some material Nagol had never seen before; here, myriad other things that he could not believe were so plentiful. All of the bits of gadgetry were intriguing, but the one item that caught his eye was a grand cape, impeccably white, suspended from the wall by two thick metal rods. Feeling the material, he realized that it was heavily weighted - Master Gnarl had often used weights to handicap his disciples and build their strength, but never had Nagol seen anything so well crafted for the purpose. Hefting the garment in his left hand, he realized that it was perfectly suited to him; while the cape may have been huge on an average-sized man, it would extend just below his knees.

Approaching the counter to make his purchase, Nagol once again marveled at how strange it was that he was in the world without a constant guiding hand. But for now, it was time to reach the Guru and perform his duty for a day.

It was dark out, and the pre-dawn chill was at its peak, taking one last stab at those that dare be outside before the sun came up and warmed the air. Nagol, dressed now in his brand new cape and freshly washed pants, approached the home of the Guru. Before he reached the door, a squat and muscular Namekian interposed himself between the newcomer and the home. "Who comes to the home of the Guru at this hour?," growled the Guardian.

"I am Nagol Rei; I was sent by Master Gnarl to relieve you from your duties for the day.," replied Nagol. The Guardian sized him up, seemingly unfazed by the difference in their statures and more intent on determining the value of the warrior that would be taking his place until sunrise the next day. With a brief nod that indicated something at least approaching approval, he opened the door and allowed Nagol entrance.

They entered into a small chamber where the Guardian kept visitors until the Guru was prepared to meet them - it had a bench along each of two walls, doors at either end, and absolutely no decoration. "This is where you will greet the guests of the Guru throughout the day, Nagol. Simply greet them with respect, ask them why they seek audience with the Guru, introduce them to the Guru after he is done with whomever he is speaking to at the moment, and pay attention. Namek has been getting a great deal of attention from otherworldly interests lately, and the Guru has been pestered by businessmen that do not understand that we are not interested in their commerce so much as we are interested in our peaceful lives - some of these aliens can be very pushy, so pay close attention to anybody wearing anything too outlandish or flashy.," explained the Guardian as he moved to the door.

Nagol realized that this was not a task that would necessarily demand a great deal of him, but understood the gravity of the responsibility of being the keeper of the eldest and most revered member of Namekian society. With a brief farewell to the Guardian, he turned and opened the doors that would lead him into the home of the Guru.

There the Guru sat, immense and aged upon his plain throne of wood. Light from the newly rising sun beamed in from small slits cut into the high ceiling made a circle on the ground around him. The weight of ages seemed to sit upon his shoulders, but there was a kind of quiet benevolence about him that bespoke his amazing patience and love for his people. His eyes opened slowly as a tall, caped figure strode through the door and knelt before the feet of the father of all Namekians.

"There is no need to kneel before me, Nagol Rei. Rise, and do not worry about formalities here; your duties do not allow for you to spend time and energy worrying about whether you are acting appropriately in my presence," rumbled the Guru, only his jaw and jowls becoming animated as he spoke. "We will have many visitors today, and there are some that will not appreciate what I must say to them. As a matter of fact -," the Guru stopped, gesturing with one gnarled finger toward the entryway.

Pushing aside his awe at being spoken to by the single most important Namekian in existence, Nagol pivoted sharply on his heels and reached the door just in time to meet his first visitor of the day before he could gain entrance. A clean-cut, middle-aged human came to an abrupt stop before the imposing figure that had come out of the shadows. In an attempt to convince himself that he was not at all off-put, the little man cleared his throat and impulsively brushed down the front of his coat.

"Hello, sir! I am Vander Trahd, and I was wondering if the Great and Beneficent Guru of your people might be available to, uh, grant me an audience to discuss a trade agreement between the beautiful people of Namek and the humble Terra Corporation," breathed the businessman, all of his words sounding well-rehearsed but utterly devoid of sincerity. Something about the permanent smile and brisk demeanor of the man struck Nagol as false, but it was not his duty to judge.

"Welcome, Vander Trahd, to the home of the Guru. Please wait in here while I inform him of your arrival," demurred the big Namekian before he turned about and entered the hall of the eldest Namek.

After speaking quietly to the Guru, Nagol escorted Vander into the hall and took his place in the small antechamber that apparently would serve as his office for the day. He could hear the tone of the words exchanged by the Guru and the human salesman, but could only make out brief phrases and the occasional word. Nobody approached, and so the temporary Guardian was left with little to do but simply pay attention.

Nearly ten minutes passed before Vander began to raise his voice, nearly yelling at the Guru, "This is stupid! Bull! Are you blind? You could be filthy rich, along with everybody else on this rock! Why get in the way of progress like this? I have hundreds of people on dozens of freighters waiting on my word to move into this place - what about them and their families?"

Unable to hear the Guru's response to all of this, Nagol quietly insinuated himself into the room, off to Vander's right. The human's face was nearly purple, he was so livid - but the Guru only nodded calmly, responding in low tones and refusing to move on his position. Finally Vander threw his arms up in the air and made for the door, taking time to glare at the Guardian on his way out.

"You green freaks can't stop us forever, you know! There's tons of very rich people out there that stand to make a lotta money offa this place, and that old lump in there better wise up," grumbled the man as he charged out the front door and out into the early morning.

As the day wore on, three Namekians and two more businessmen looking like the first passed through the doors to the Guru's home. All of them were properly respectful, the Namekians seeking guidance in relatively mundane matters and settling minor disputes and the humans entreating him to allow their corporations to do business with more freedom. These men were more reasonable than Vander had been, but left looking decidedly frustrated.

It was now early in the afternoon, and Nagol had just brought the Guru a fresh jug of water. The last visitor had left twenty minutes prior and Nagol now had some time to enjoy the day, stretching in the sun and watching clouds float lazily by. The Guru catnapped in his chamber and all was well.

While Nagol gazed meditatively upon the world, a pair of men came into view about a mile away. Wishing to maintain the solemnity of his post, he stood fully erect before the doorway to the Guru's home. A few minutes later, the two figures became clearer - one of them was the squirrelly little man, Vander, that had come at dawn and the other was a newcomer, much taller and more fit. The new one had wild red hair and wore a brown body-suit, and carried himself with the poise and grace of a trained warrior.

Sensing that Vander had come back with muscle for a reason, the Guardian stepped forward and hailed the two as they came within twenty paces. "Hello again, Mr. Trahd, and welcome to the Guru's home. Why might you and your friend be here today?"

Vander glared at the big Namekian before speaking to his companion, "Get him out of my way, Finn. I want a little alone time with our friend, the Guru."

Obviously not a man that needed much prompting, Finn stepped forward. A moment's hesitation flashed through his eyes as he sized Nagol up and realized just how much of him there was, but it was quickly overcome and he tensed himself into a fighting stance. Only seven paces distant from the door, the red-head prepared to do battle.

Nagol took three steps out of the doorway before adopting his own favorite stance, his legs spread wide and knees severely bent to lower his center of gravity and allow him maximum mobility in the range most of his opponents operated in. Both warriors spared a moment to take stock of their situation, Nagol making a mental note to keep track of Vander as events unfolded.

With a sudden, almost perfectly synchronized cry from both fighters, the battle began. Finn initiated the battle by taking a large step forward and following with a pair of kicks, hoping to destabilize his larger opponent. Nagol reacted quickly, sidestepping and taking the opportunity to throw a pair of jabs that were deftly evaded. A first test volley having been resolved, both opponents now understood that any victory between them would be earned. Stepping back and resuming their stances, the two of them began to circle, a new level of intensity and caution existing between them.

Finn once again made the first move, this time charging in with an aggressive flurry of punches and kicks that momentarily put Nagol on the defensive, forcing him to give a little ground. Working through the pain from a handful of body shots, the Namekian responded with his own barrage of attacks and the battle commenced in earnest. Both warriors were well-versed in the martial arts, but it soon became apparent that the human lacked the level of discipline that Nagol possessed; whereas the Namekian moved conservatively and made sure to defend himself while taking calculated shots designed to tear his opponent down over time, Finn sought to end the battle with a torrential assault intended to tear through his enemy's defenses and break them outright.

Blows were exchanged for nearly a full minute before Nagol managed to reach at Finn's ankles and flip him backward. The red-headed man hit the ground with a resounding "thud" that would have signaled the end for an ordinary combatant, but he quickly regained his feet and resumed a fighting posture.

"Yer a tough turtle, buddy, but I'm gonna break you like an egg," spat Finn, sliding a step back from the Namekian and shifting his stance a little. "Try some of this on for size!"

Raising both hands, palms facing outward, Finn gathered his energies and unleashed a series of energy blasts that exploded toward Nagol. Unprepared for so advanced a technique from this man, he had little choice but to evade what he could and minimize the damage done by what did manage to hit him. Three of the shots grazed his arms and torso, and one landed squarely on his thigh. Making a split-second decision, Nagol dropped to his knee and allowed a pained expression to spread across his face. Feigning exhaustion, he took deep, gasping breaths and prepared for his next move.

As expected, Finn expressed triumph; he had unloaded a Ki attack that had battered his opponent, and now victory was for the taking. Stepping forward with only a token guard, he moved to deliver the final blow. While the thoroughly misled human was still more than five feet distant, Nagol thrust both arms forward and extended them with all his might, striking Finn in both the face and the groin. Completely unaware that anybody could possibly strike from such a distance, Finn cried out and staggered backwards. Pressing his advantage, the giant Namekian uncoiled himself from his kneeling position and fell upon the man, relentlessly bludgeoning him with every one of his limbs.

The tussle continued for some time, but Finn was defeated; he had not come prepared for a match like this, and really wasn't being paid enough by Terra Corp. to take this kind of punishment. Crying out and going limp, he surrendered to the ferocious Guardian. Nagol stepped away and resumed a fighting stance, sparing a glance at Vander to ensure that he was still outside. Thankfully, he was still outside - and all his bravado had fallen away. A wet stain was slowly spreading across the pushy little man's pants.

"Leave this place, pests! You can't just show up and do whatever you want on Namek; you need to learn some respect first. Get the hell out of here and don't dare come back. If you do, it'll be the last time you do anything," growled Nagol through clenched teeth. He flashed his pointed teeth for added effect and pointed back in the direction the two men had come from. Properly dissuaded, the two men went along their way.

After taking stock of his body and satisfying himself that he had sustained no serious injuries, Nagol brushed himself off. Allowing himself a moment to cool off and regain his composure, he returned to the Guru's chamber to make sure that all was well inside. To his surprise, the Guru seemed fully alert, sitting more upright than he had at any other point in the day and opening his eyes fully. As soon as Nagol entered, the father of their people motioned him closer.

"You have served me well, Nagol Rei. That demonstration of the Namekian fighting spirit will make future visitors more reluctant to attempt to move us by a show of force," rumbled the Guru in deep and sonorous tones. "I sense in you great potential and the mental readiness to learn much. If you are willing, you may spend time with me and learn more of what it is possible for a Namekian warrior to achieve. For now, please continue in your duties and we can discuss the matter more tomorrow."

With that, the great Guru settled back in his throne, once again in the deeply restive state that characterized much of his life. Nagol returned to his post beside the main entryway, quietly celebrating that he would now have the opportunity to study under the master of his people and become something more than he could have dreamed before. The rest of the day passed quietly, with not a single visitor coming to see the Guru or his Guardian, and Nagol Rei was pleased to be relieved of his duties when the sun rose the next morning.
