Having trained under the tutelage of the Guru for some time now, Nagol had learned much and grown a great deal stronger. He had introduced himself to new heights of physical exertion, grown closer to himself and the world around him, and understood how to manipulate his own life force in ways that he had never before thought himself capable of. The learning came easily, and the progress he had made was obvious.

While performing a two-hundred-movement kata designed to imitate a standard series of maneuvers performed by two well-matched opponents, Nagol was approached by the Guru's Guardian. "You may end your training for the day now, Nagol Rei," he called to the big Namekian as he performed a take down move on an invisible opponent, "The Guru would like you to join a handful of other students with Master Vin. Vin is a well respected warrior that once saved a whole village from extinction by scaring away a score of aliens. He will have much to teach you."

His chest heaving from exertion, Nagol could only nod his appreciation. Every muscle in his body ached from what he had been doing to himself in his time with the Guru, but he knew that there could only be more pain up ahead - and all the rewards that came from such intensive study and exercise. Training with master Vin would help to expand his understanding of his own strengths, and bring him closer to the day that he could cease to be a student and become a warrior in his own right.

Checking to make sure his cape was properly cinched into place and taking a deep, long drink from the ceramic jug he used as a water dish, Nagol caught his breath and set out to once again train under one of Namek's great teachers.

It took Nagol only a matter of hours to reach the training grounds that Master Vin presided over. Unlike the other schools of training that the tall Namekian had been to, this one sported only a small hut with four large arenas around it. Vin took no students permanently, and only taught his techniques to those that were sent by other teachers across Namek.

As he walked toward the lone little hut that housed the Master, Nagol took note of the many pock-marks and little craters that littered the floor of the training grounds, as well as the handful of Namekian warriors that stood patiently in a line outside. There was definitely something to be learned here that was not merely a way to stop or hinder a physical opponent. Wondering what it could be that he had come here to learn, he quietly took his place next to another student and waited, as the others did, for the Master to appear.

Two hours passed as the eight Namekians waited outside of the home of Master Vin, none of them uttering a word, none of them moving from their position. Nagol spent the time watching his fellow students and sizing them up, taking careful notes on their mannerisms and idiosyncrasies. He found that he felt a bit superior to the others; he was bigger than all the rest, and seemed to be more at ease and yet simultaneously alert than the others. This could only work in his favor.

Finally, a wrinkled and stunted figure emerged from the Master's hut. Vin stood barely over four feet tall, with leathery skin that was scarred and faded in many places. He wore only a gray robe, and seemed as old as the ground upon which he stood.

"Welcome, young warriors, to my home. Now will be your time to -," the Master disappeared from where he stood, leaving only a green and gray blur behind. From behind the assembled students, he finished, "- learn my ways."

Nagol turned around as quickly as he could, leading the other students by a fraction of a second. All of them were unable to hide their astonishment at the amazing speed with which the old teacher moved, but all refrained from saying anything.

"All of you have been deemed ready to learn how to utilize the great power that lies within yourselves offensively," said Master Vin to his new students, "But before your respective masters are willing to teach you how to do harm with your Ki, they desire that you learn what it is to be harmed by an energy attack - and how to ensure that you do not often get hurt by such attacks. To this end, I will be exposing you to different levels of energy attacks to test your endurance. Once you understand what it is to feel another's Ki directed at you in an aggressive manner, I will teach you how to dismiss such attacks and make them meaningless to you."

A sense of pride swelled within Nagol as he realized that he had already felt the brunt of an energy attack before - he already knew the sensation, and knew that he could withstand the pain. If he was lucky, he might be able to handle Master Vin's training and learn his ultimate lesson.

"Now, all of you please break into pairs, then each pair will stand side by side in the middle of one of the four training arenas, facing away from my home," croaked the old Master. Still maintaining a disciplined silence the students paired off and, with only a moment's hesitation as they sorted themselves out, took positions as Master Vin had ordered.

Again, it was time for the Namekian warriors to stand patiently while waiting for their teacher to tell them what they would do next.

Minutes after Nagol and his partner had taken their position facing south from Master Vin's hut, they heard something to the east - a distant whistling sound, interspersed with the occasional thud of something hitting the ground. Neither of them gave in to the temptation to look in the direction of the noise, and both of them wondered what could be going on.

Three hours later, the sound stopped. There was a brief pause, followed by the very same sounds coming from the north. Again, the sounds lasted for hours - Nagol took to bending his knees ever so slightly every hour or so to ensure that he kept himself limber. The noises ceased again.

Now the sounds of somebody releasing energy came from the west. This time it lasted for another five hours, making Nagol wonder if perhaps his fellow students to the west might be a little slower than the other four that had already been instructed.

Finally, the sounds ended once more. Fifteen minutes later, Master Vin stepped into view of the last two students. "Your patience will now be rewarded, my students," rasped the old Namekian, "Whatever happens, do not try to evade my attacks - make them evade you."

With that, Vin set himself and raised his hands in front of his body, palms facing toward the students. He closed his eyes for a moment and charged up, his body surrounded by a cool white aura. After a moment of gathering his energies, he opened his eyes and began throwing fist-sized blasts of Ki at Nagol and his partner - dozens of them, all moving directly toward the two of them.

Now understanding what this exercise would be about, Nagol tensed himself and attempted to track the motion of the oncoming blasts of energy. He made an effort to strike the first one that reached him with his forearm, succeeding only in missing it and leaving his torso open to the four that followed it. Pain ripped through the hulking Namekian's body, reminding him of the exertions he had been visiting upon himself while training with the Guru.

Both the students had barely enough time to regain their balance from the first volley before the second began, the attacks even more numerous than before. This was not going to be a good day.

The second assault was even more devastating than the first, tearing through every defense that the students could muster. Both Nagol and his partner were struck at least five or six times, the impacts sending shudders through their bodies and rocking them to their cores. Master Vin gave them precisely ten seconds before he unleashed his Energy Dan upon them a third time.

Working through the anger and frustration that had come to the forefront of his mind, Nagol looked within himself and tried to find the solution to this problem. As soon as the third wave of energy blasts began to move toward him, he assumed a regular fighting stance and began trying to bat them away, continuing in his efforts even as he was struck time and again. The pain was amazing, enough to send him to the very edge of consciousness and threaten to push him over. Still, he pressed on.

In the course of the fourth volley, the battered warrior managed to intercept all but two of the blasts aimed at his body with his arms; he had still been unsuccessful in deflecting any of the attacks, but he was definitely beginning to understand what he needed to do. Still, he wouldn't be able to hold out much longer if he continued to take this sort of punishment...

After the fourth volley, Nagol spared a glance at his partner and saw that the other Namekian was in terrible shape. Multiple blasts had hit him in the face, shattering his nose and bruising both of his eyes; his fingers looked tweaked and misshapen. With a course of action carefully plotted in his mind, the big warrior gathered his energies and prepared himself for what he hoped would be the last of Master Vin's barrages.

With Vin poised to act, Nagol summoned the one source of energy he could call upon that might give him the edge he needed.

When Master Vin unleashed his fifth Energy Dan, Nagol called upon the raging fire within himself and cried out, "NOVA INFERNO!"

Brilliant blue energy erupted around the hulking Namekian's muscular frame, invigorating him and sharpening his reflexes. Once again dropping into a fighting stance, he watched as the balls of energy moved toward him. Instead of just standing and waiting for the barrage to reach him, he actually took a calculated step forward and caught one of the blasts from the side, focusing his energies on that one point and willing it to be pushed away. Without a sound, without anything at all to really announce that the effort had been worthwhile, the ball of Ki veered harmlessly away.

That fraction of a second took nearly all that was left from Nagol's broken body, and he hardly felt it when three other blasts raked his neck and shoulders. Having accomplished what he set out to do, he slipped into darkness for some time.

When Nagol awoke, he was laying precisely where he had been when he passed out. Master Vin stood over him with his hands outstretched and eyes closed, a soothing energy pouring out of him and into the damaged student. A moment later, Vin was done and Nagol was helped to his feet.

"You learned to deflect those attacks with uncanny faculty, Nagol Rei," said Master Vin, his eyes gleaming. "I understand why the Guru sent you to me; very few students have learned my lesson that quickly. The others will probably be spending the better part of this next with me, learning what it took you less than an hour to learn. With most pupils I would reinforce what you have already learned and help you fine tune your technique, but I have faith that you will be able to master this technique on your own. Go in peace, and may the Guru teach you well."

With that, Master Vin turned away and left Nagol to return to the Guru's home, where he would refine this new talent and continue his studies.
