Crono stepped off of his ship onto a breezy plain of blue grass. The green sky of Namk greeted him with puffy clouds and silence. All he could hear was the ticking of panels on his ship still cooling from entry. He stepped down the ramp and waited into the long grass. He put his hands behind his head and let out a long sigh. It had been a long ride with rigorous training. He wasn't even sure what to do on the backwater world. He had heard of a legendary master named Guru. He walked around his ship and gave it a brief inspection, taking a loot at each of the panels, the landing claws, and the engines. Space had really taken a toll on th vessel. There were several blown panels and damage all across the board from micro meteorites. He had extra panels and repair kits on board. He doubted he'd be able to find any parts on Namek at all. It was the most backwater planet in the Protectorate. "Guru," he muttered. It was a bit odd of a name. It usually was a title. He hoped that he was a Guru. Not some some crack-pot greenie with an ego. He doubted anyone could ever replace Master Vaelre. Namek was the first stop on his journey to hunt down the man with the Metal Visage. Nothing would stop him. He just needed to make sure he was absolutely ready before he faced him. This Guru was the man to train him. So said Master Shingo. All he could do was trust the words of Vaelre's former best friend and see down what path they could lead him. After the inspection was complete he closed up the hatch. It slid back and hissed up, slamming shut and smoothing out the egg shaped hull of the Capsule Corp. Ship. It was certainly a strange looking vessel, but it had a certain human flare to it. Other ships he'd seen were more sleek, elongated, and slim. The human model was just a bulk. "Now it's time to find a needle in a hay stack!" Crono said and floated up into the air until he was high enough to get a good view of the horizon. In the distance he saw some lights and wisps of smoke. "A village," he muttered and flew off toward it. |

The village was nestled between two cliffs and surrounded by a patch of namekian woods. The trees on Namek reminded Crono of lolipops. They were like bushes with tree trunks. They raised high into the air and had small leaves. It was a cluster of buildings all built in a circular fashion. In the center of the circle was a a stone oval with a fire basin. He saw villagers walking around. Some had baskets in their hands full of fruits and vegetables. Behind cliffs he could see a flat plain that lead to he sea. The whole plain was used as a field of crops. He lowered down into the center of the village and touched down. The villagers stopped what they were doing and stared at him. Some of the young Namekians rushed of and hid behind the older ones. There was no designation of male of female. They all seemed the same. By the means of it, he guessed the duties, chores, and responsibilities were class and age based. He saw taller more muscular Namekians approaching him. They had gruff looks and scars all over their green bodies. They were the warrior class. Elders whispered to each other and hid behind the young. Elders seemed to be the administrative. Other, heavier set Namekians did nothing but continue with their work. Those without high power levels from birth were most likely reduced to laborers and caretakers. They're wary of outsiders, Crono thought. Great, I hope they don't kick me out. The lead warrior paused a few feet from Crono. "State your business, traveler." "I just arrived on Namek. I'm looking to train with a Namekian named Guru." The warriors burst into laughter. "Do you really think you can train with Guru? Not even the best Namekians get that privilege. I suggest you head back where you came from." Crono nodded. "Well, I'm hoping that Guru can make that distinction for himself. I will gladly leave this planet if he doesn't want me as his pupil. So please, where can I find him?" One of the warriors dug out a dirty old scouter from his robes. It was a bit burnt up and scathed. Crono had seen them before. They were a piece of equipment invented to sense power levels for those who didn't know how. "I got his from an outsider like you. Let's just see how you match up!" the Namek said. "If you're strong perhaps I will tell you." He put it on his ear and clicked a button several times. It made a few chirping noise and then beeped as numbers scrolled across the eye piece. "A power level of five?" The warrior couldn't help his laughter. "Get out of here." Crono smirked. He was suppressing his ki signature. He could of blown their minds with his power, but he chose not to. He didn't want to scare the children anymore. The group that had gathered scattered, deeming Crono as not at threat at all. In a way it had worked in his favor. Now he could roam freely and ask questions. One of them was bound to tell him. |

Just as the crowd had all went back to work a Namekian youngling walked up to him. The little bugger had a keen look in his eyes. He was a bit strange, as he only had one antenna on his head. He eyed Crono up and down before speaking. "You're lying," he said. Crono perked an eyebrow. "About what, might I ask?" "You're not weak." "How can you tell?" Crono asked. "I just can. I can tell when people lie. It's not very nice to lie. That's what the Elder says." Crono laughed and knelt so he was at the same level as the little Namekian. "What's your name?" "I'm Horn. That's what they call me, cause I have only have one antenna." "Horn, I'm not lying. You see I'm hiding. I'm hiding my real power so I don't scare anyone. I'm not here to fight. I'm here to just find out where Guru is." Horn thought about it for a long moment. He put his hands on his hip and laughed. "I like that! You're nice you know. A lot of outsiders come here and bully us! We're supposed to run away from people like you. But you're telling the truth. I can tell that. I like the truth!" Crono laughed put his hand on Horn's shoulder. "Me and you are a lot a like then. I like the truth too." "Those warriors are lying anyway. They don't know where Guru is. Only the Elder knows where Guru is. Most of the people here have never left the village or wandered far. It's not safe. Namek is full of dangers." "I could imagine. Where is the Elder? Perhaps I can speak to him?" "It is funny you ask! He is on his pilgrimage. He went to see Guru himself to receive the blessing for our village. Every year he does it and when he returns we throw a great festival, with feast, dancing, and the pearl hunt!" "When he gets back do you think he will tell me?" Horn thought about it for a long time. But Crono noticed it looked more like he was concentrating on something. He closed his eyes and opened them. "He will make you do the pearl hunt to prove your worth. It is the right of passage for any warrior who wishes to learn from Guru in our village. Every warrior has failed for the past ten years. But you will succeed." Crono smiled. "Great! I will wait until the Elder gets here." Horn walked over and picked up a basket. "You can help me gather soba root!" He grinned wide. Crono found another basket, picked it up, and shrugged. "Sure, why not!" |

Crono spent several days working hard with the Namekians of the village. At first they gave him a cold shoulder, until one day one of the warriors approached him. Crono was tossing roots into a basket. His hands were caked with dirt and sweat poured off of his back. "Why do you work our fields?" "To prove that I am worthy enough to learn of Guru's location." The warrior shook his head. "The truth is we don't even know. Only the elder tells us if we are worthy enough to get a great pearl." Horn, who was standing behind Crono had a big smile on his face. Crono looked down to him and winked. "I will participate in that trial if necessary, if your elder will allow it." "He just arrived," the warrior stated. "We are beginning to set up for festivities." After filling their baskets of roots, Crono and Horn returned to the village. The villagers were gathered around the oval in the center of the village. They were laughing, eating, and drinking. Crono saw an old withered Namekian leaning on a stick. Several warriors, including the one that had talked to them moments ago, were standing in a line. Crono and Horn set their baskets down with the rest of the harvest. Crono grabbed a root and took a big bite out of it as they walked over to the Elder. The Elder turned to Crono. "It seems, visitor, that you are the talk of my village. You have helped out with our harvest and Ezu here tells me you are curious to train with Guru and are willing to follow our traditions to do so. That is very noble. Most outsiders barge into our world demanding Guru's training. Most are either killed or sent away. None have showed your courtesy and willingness to follow tradition. Thus, we will let you participate in the Pearl Hunt." "He will get the pearl," Horn said. The Ezu and the other warriors shot him a glance. Horn just smiled. The Elder laughed. "Ho ho ho! I certainly hope someone gets it this year. It's not like int the old days. Our warriors don't train as hard as they used to and we haven't had a pearl in some time." Ezu looked ashamed. Crono rested his hands on his hips. "I can attest to the fact that I train very hard. In fact," he rubbed his head. "It's about all I do!" "Pshhht, you're a weakling," the one warrior with the scouter said to him. The Elder shook his head in shame. "Never underestimate someone. You use alien machines to rate a warrior you know nothing about. Your machine could be broken, or simply this fellow could be hiding his power. It could be a grave mistake in a fight. So do not rely on it. Rely on your eyes, ears, sight, and heart. It is all you will ever need." The mistaken warrior bowed to his Elder. "Forgive me." The Elder raised his staff in the air. "The Pearl Hunt shall begin!" There was a roar of excitement from the crowd. Crono cracked his knuckles. |

The Namekians were gathered around the beach. The selected warriors for the Pearl Hunt lined up next to the water side. The green sea of namek crashed up against the rocks and sent oceanic spray into the air. Crono removed his shirt and handed it down to Horn. Horn looked up and smiled at him. "You can do it Crono!" Crono did a few arm circles and jumping jacks. He was a decent swimmer. The hardest part about it though, would be holding breath long enough. From what Horn had told him the Gigan Clam, which held the Pearl, was very deep below. It was also very dangerous. Warriors had died attempting to retrieve its pearl. And then after that, opening the jaws of the clam was even harder, as it took a ridiculous amount of strength to pull it off. To say the least, Crono was ecstatic. He loved chalenges and this one would be the best. The Elder approached the beach and stood before the warriors. He scanned them up and down and then nodded. "May the hunt begin!" The crowd roared. The Namekian warriors ran and jumped high into the air, flipping and splashing into the water. Crono sprinted after them and jumped in with a front dive. The water that hit him was unimaginably cold. It knocked the wind out of him, and he surfaced to catch his breath again. "Don't give up all ready Crono!" Horn shouted. Crono took a deep beath and dove under the waves. He opened his eyes and started to swim down. The depths of the water were beyond his sight, although the water was rather clear, and to his surprise it didn't seem salty like back on Earth. He saw the Namekian warriors vanish into the shadows below. He followed after. He saw giant shadows in the distance of monster and fish beyond his imagination. The Namekians at least knew what was at stake. He guessed some of them had probably done it before. He finally caught up to them. They were waiting and down below toward the sea floor he could see what looked like a huge egg shape with thousands of tentacles protruding out, and waving crazily. The first warrior went and the other paused. Each got their chance. He swam down, evading the tentacles that came swatting at him. He did good until he reached about half-way to the clam's shell. A large tentacle hit him and his body went limp. He floated to the surface and the next Namekian went. Each of them failed on their journey until it was just Ezu and Crono left. Crono's lungs were already burning and his puffed cheeks struggled to not open and suck in air that wasn't here. But he had arrived last and let Ezu go first. Ezu dove. He was fast and able to evade the tentacles far better than the other warriors. Crono's eyes widened as he seemingly made it through and was on his way toward the clam's shell. Suddenly, he was struck, mere inches away from the shell by a tentacle. He started to float up but then another tentacle came around and wrapped around him. The Clam opened it's giant jaws. Crono saw nothing but a swirl of meat and teeth the size of Horn, each gleaming. Beyond the teeth he saw something shine, a small pearl. He swam down as fast as he could. He moved through the tentacles with an ease that the other Namekians would of surely been jealous of. He was too late though, as the huge clam slammed its jaws shut, trapping Ezu inside. Crono let out a wave of bubbles as he tried to scream underwater. He swam in and the tentacle that got Ezu almost got him. He fired a beam ball and cut it in half. The energy floated off and exploded against a large rock shelf. The second tentacle that had grabbed Ezu came in toward him and he banked hard left. It swung by and he then chopped it half with the flat of his hand. He grabbed the mouth of the Clam and pushed hard with all of his strength. It barely budge. His lungs were in desperation and he felt himself starting to get sluggish. It was not a good sign. He was running out of oxygen fast. The primal rage of near death flushed through him. Adrenaline coursed through his veins and his muscles bulged. His aura wrapped around him and lit up the sea, sending waves of bubbles to the surface. He pushed and pulled with all of his might and the jaws of the clam opened. There, inside he saw Ezu floating, still paralyzed, with several cuts from the teeth. They had started to digest him. Crono was athis limit, he had no more air and was starting to drown. Water flooded his nostrils He saw the pearl. It so deep within the clam, winking at him with a twinkle of light. He grabbed the Namekian by the wrist and swam hard. He fired a blast and it cut though the tentacles like a hot knife through butter. He surfaced and with all of his strength tossed him forward onto the beach. He gasped for air frantically. The namekian warriors grabbed him by the wrists and tugged him onto the beach. Ezu woke and coughed up water. "He--he--saved me?" Ezu asked in a confused manner. Crono sat up coughing too. Horn rushed over. "Oh Crono! You're okay!" "But I didn't get the pearl," Crono said. He was clearly disappointed. "You said I would." Horn laughed. "I just said that cause I wanted you to get it!" Crono laughed. "I guess so." Ezu stood and walked over to Crono. He looked at him and nodded. "You are strong. You saved my life. Thank you." The Elder approached, his cane tossing up beach sand. It was then Crono heard the murmur from the villagers. "I failed, I'm sorry," Crono said. "Looks like I will just go home." "No son," the Elder said and shook his head. "You might have failed at getting the pearl, but there is always next year. You saved Ezu's life. You chose his life over a shiny object. That is true worth. That is a true pearl on its own. We would never get our Ezu back. But we can always get another pearl. You've shown your worth, Crono. I will tell you the location of Guru." Crono smiled and so did Horn. "You did it!" Horn exclaimed. Crono laughed and coughed some more. "Yes! It looks like I did!" "We are brothers now," Ezu said and offered his hand to Crono. He took it and jumped up. |
