Red. All I see is red.

As Pumpkin rowed in his boat on his way to the “turtle hermit’s” house, he let his mind drift off. The hot sun streamed down from above him and made the blood plastered on his Saiyan armor boil. With every stroke of the boat’s oars, Pumpkin wandered farther and farther off into his consciousness…

Back on the Planet Vegeta, Pumpkin had been a Saiyan warrior. His pride and joy were abounded from his position. He loved his duty and held a steadfast allegiance to the great King Vegeta. Pumpkin was one of the King’s most trusted advisors and soldiers. He would scour the galaxy in search of new conquests and claim them in the name of his Saiyan brethren….
At least, that’s how Pumpkin remembered it.

In fact, Pumpkin was nothing but a lowly foot soldier. Canon folder to the Saiyan people. Always on the front lines, his life was meant nothing to his comrades, and his body was never used for anything less than a meat shield. Pumpkin was never trained in combat, nor was he given official rank. No one ever expected him to live long enough to earn one.

But Pumpkin loved his job. In some delusional way, he always made himself seem more important than he actually was. He would recant stories back home of how he single-handily defeated an entire platoon of soldiers, when in fact he had only been driven in as a distraction while other warriors attacked from behind. Pumpkin was never the brightest of his race, nor was he the strongest, but determination and heart he certainly had plenty of. And more than that, Pumpkin had an undying loyalty for his people.

It was this loyalty that drove him mad. There were rumors of an uprising occurring that would look to overthrow King Vegeta. Political advocates who sought more power. Upon hearing this, Pumpkin made it his personal quest to seek out these adversaries to his king…what happened next would define the rest of the low-class warrior for the rest of his life.

Never having done any detective work before, Pumpkin first tried to lure out the king’s adversaries by putting up flyers asking for recruits to his own “resistance squad”. This proved a failure, as (1) no one applied, and (2) those that did see the flyers merely beat Pumpkin up for his lack of loyalty. An irony that Pumpkin would never truly understand.

Next Pumpkin searched all the local hangouts and made public announcements at each of how he was looking for the “King’s Enemies!” This also ended in severe beatings. After healing in a rejuvenation tank, Pumpkin decided to take a new approach. He figured that he would have to do something to trick the enemies of the King into thinking that he was “one of them”. But the only means he could think of to prove such a thing, was to try and assassinate the king! Upon failing to do so, Pumpkin figured he would have “an in” with the enemy and be able to destroy them himself. But, as much is with Pumpkin, the plan had flaws.

The day came of Pumpkin’s attack. He was very excited. He had bought a dull sword with which he was planning on charging the King with while he was given a public address that evening. Pumpkin had hide himself in a box near the podium two days before just to prepare for the event. He had a watch, which he set just for the right time so he would know when to pop out. With a few sharp beeps the alarm sounded, Pumpkin sprung from the box ready to make his attack. But there was no King in sight! In fact, all that Pumpkin saw were rows and rows of boxes shaped just like his.

While waiting to assault the King, Pumpkin’s box had been boarded onto a shipping vehicle. Rather than being on planet Vegeta, he was adrift in space, alone, and with a dull sword.

Security aboard the shipping vehicle found Pumpkin in the holding bay. Thinking he was a “stow away”, they fired on him at sight. Thoroughly confused, and more than agitated, Pumpkin rose to the challenge.

Perhaps it was one moment of true clarity for Pumpkin, perhaps it was just the confusion, or perhaps it was the rage of a lifetime of failures, but Pumpkin charged the guards with such a force that it would make any Saiyan proud.

Swinging his dulled sword, Pumpkin dodged the lasers shot by the guards and hacked away at their armor. After years of doing the army’s drudge work, Pumpkin’s strength was actually quite impressive. Even despite the blade’s dullness, Pumpkin managed to wedge it between one of the guard’s ribs causing his insides to spill out and onto the floor.

Pumpkin’s fighting style was one of brute aggression. His moves were rash and uncalculated, but still crushing and powerful. His meaty hands wrapped around the skull of one of the guards, and with fiendish strength, Pumpkin squeezed and caused the head to burst. Blood covered the Saiyan warrior.

At this point, Pumpkin was panting. His tongue was dangling out his mouth and his teeth were exposed. His fangs were dripping with the blood of the fallen guards. Pumpkin dove toward the last guard and felt two lasers strike his flesh. Pumpkin’s skin exploded with fire, but this only fueled his rage. With eyes wide and wild, Pumpkin wrapped his burly arms around the last guard and sank his teeth into his throat. As the guard’s jugular and carotid blood vessels torn open, red filled the scene. The salty blood rolled down Pumpkin’s throat. He was deaf to the guard’s cries of pain.

As the last body fell to the floor, Pumpkin stood over it wheezing. He coughed and blood boiled over his lips. For Pumpkin it was a moment of ascension. For the first time in Pumpkin’s life, he had fought like a true warrior. He was independent, autonomous, his actions all his own. The blood that now covered him was spilt by no one but himself. For the first time in Pumpkin’s life, he felt good about himself. He had accomplished something.

The rest of the crew on the shipping vessel never stood a chance. Pumpkin had spent his lifetime watching some of the Saiyan peoples most powerful warriors in some of the most vicious battles in history. While he had never actively studied them, as if by osmosis, Pumpkin seemed to carry some of those fighting techniques into his form. While he was anything but flawless, Pumpkin was surely effective, in only 15 minutes time he had gutted almost everyone on the ship. The only remaining survivors hulled themselves away in the main cabin.

What have we done to deserve this!?!

They shouted and hollered, but Pumpkin heard none of it. All he knew was the joy he now felt. How satisfied he was with each kill. Each one was a personal victory. The door to the main cabin was locked, and Pumpkin knew he had to get inside.

Pumpkin charged the door and felt it give. He stammered back and saw his imprint in the metallic sheet. He never knew he had such strength in him, and that only fueled his passion. Pumpkin charged the door again and this time one of the hinges exploded open. Screams were heard from the other side. Pumpkin let out a laugh and a sly smile crept across his face. Placing both is palms on the door, Pumpkin pushed with all his might and felt it give some more. The screams grew louder. Pumpkin let out a roar and the door fell to the floor with a clang!

Lasers shot off in rapid succession. Pumpkin felt several strike him and pain shot across his body. The last thing Pumpkin saw before his body gave out was the terrified face of a child clenching tightly her father’s leg. Pumpkin smiled, then darkness.

When Pumpkin woke up he was in an escape pod. More curiously though as he examined his wounds, he found that all of them had been bandaged and repaired. While his body was still weak, and his head dizzy, he struggled to understand. Looking through the porthole of the escape pod, Pumpkin saw the remaining members of the ship staring at him. They waved goodbye.

There was a hissing sound and the pod shifted. With a blast it shot away from the shipping vehicle and hurled into space. With his head still spinning, Pumpkin struggled to understand what had happened. As stars whirled by outside, he tried to remember what had happened to him. All he could remember was the thrill of the kills. It was as if everything else had been a blur. Everything but the death. And then Pumpkin remembered being shot, and the darkness. He should have been dead.

As it turned out the shipping vehicle had actually not been a shipping vehicle at all. Rather instead it was a band of people who were in fact enemies to King Vegeta. They were taking supplies to a neighboring enemy in order to prepare for a future assault against the king. Upon being attacked by Pumpkin, however, they lost their nerve. If fighting the Saiyan King meant losing that many of their own people, then the fight truly was already over before it could even begin. Unknowingly, Pumpkin had found the enemies to the King that he sought and stopped them. But, alas, this is yet another truth that Pumpkin would never know.

Pumpkin would also never know that the only reason he was keep alive was to send a message of good faith to King Vegeta, but since King Vegeta never knew of Pumpkin’s existence, the likelihood of the message being received was scarce.

But, as was said, as Pumpkin hurled through space, he knew none of this.

Eventually Pumpkin and his escape pod crash landed on a planet called Earth. Upon landing, Pumpkin wandered the planet until he came across a small village. Only partially at his full strength, it took him a while to exterminate everyone in the town, but after only a few minor hiccups, Pumpkin was able to sit back and relax having added more casualties to his list.

It was as Pumpkin relaxed that he caught a special on the TV. It was about the “great fighters of the universe”. Pumpkin was memorized by what he saw. Fighters that could fight like those back on Vegeta. True soldiers who had learned to do incredible things that could cause untold damage. Pumpkin had to learn! The more he thought about it, the more lives he foresaw being ended. Who knows, maybe one day he could even return to Planet Vegeta and rejoin his fellow soldiers?

With that Pumpkin was out once again on a detective’s quest. It took him a while to get the inhabitants of the planet to talk with him. As it turns out, they were frightened whenever he showed up covered in blood. So Pumpkin washed himself off and tried again. This led him to his second conclusion, earthlings don’t like to die. And so Pumpkin waited to kill them until they could give him some information. A more promising method, but unhelpful if he forget what they told him.

After some time, Pumpkin finally found out what he needed to know. And so with a heart full of confidence and a belly full of blood, the Saiyan made his way out to meet with one of the great trainers of the universe, Master Roshi, the Turtle Hermit…

Pumpkin snapped back from a dreary sleep. The sun was still high and hot. The water glistening and still. Yawning, Pumpkin stretched and the boat rocked side-to-side. Turning, Pumpkin glanced behind him and saw an island in the distance. The only land for miles.

Ha!

A quick laugh, and Pumpkin is fully awake. Rowing as hard and fast as he can, he strokes toward the island with a new found motivation. Finally Pumpkin would be truly powerful. He could really make a name for himself in the universe. But first he might have to “play good”. Master Roshi won’t teach just anybody after all…
