Assume it's plain one-on-one combat, and both combatants have equal skill, strength, speed, and so on. And no, neither weapon has magical powers, nor do the combatants have armor (other than leather pants). The sword looks like this; ![]() The staff looks like this; ![]() I shall vote for the staff. Quite frankly, I like the sword better, but it wouldn't win in a one-on-one battle. Staff has two ends. The sword makes a slash, one end blocks the blade, the other bashes the swordsman's face. If he's injured badly enugh, the deathblow can come directly after. NOTE: I plan to continue this line of polls (if I feel like it). |

Depends on the sword and staff man. That is way to general. A Shamshir or Sica would own a f'ng staff as they could use the angle of the blade to bypass the defenses of the staff wielder. |

The sword can cut the staff therefore making the staff entirely useless, so I go with the sword. |

and also Raditz , even if the staff can defend with both sides , just like agrahl said , swords can also block with the other side , and by the way if you block an atack from a sword with a staff , you'll get a broken staff |

That depends on how dense the staff is and what material the sword is made out of. But I do admit, in most cases my reasoning would be wrong. |

I think you misunderstood. I mean the type of sword and staff would determine which would have the advantage. A three section staff is a bit different than a bo just like a scimitar is different than a flamberge or sica. |

I showed you the pictures of the weapons. The staff is just one lucky stick that can be used for fighting and killing. The sword is just the product of some blacksmith who had the skills. |

That sword is a falchion, a massive two handed blade that would make the staff wielder shit himself until blood and sweat came out of his arse. And to be fair, no sword and staff are equals....ever. |

lol, I meant the wielders were equal. But the sword is short, and the staff is long, therefore giving the staff a much needed advantage. That is, until the sword hits it, lol. |

So a short sword vs a staff? That would be a shortlived fight. To be fair, the staff's reach can easily be negated. Find cover or slowly work your way in and disarm the moron. I have yet to see a spar involving weapons where a polearm wins the match unless the swordsman is an idiot. Perfect example--> Katana V Naginata....Naginata SHOULD lose 85% of the time. They are not very effective weapons when used against a bladed weapon. |

If the swordsman was stupid enough to grab one end of the staff, he'd get the other end bashed into the side of his skull. If the swordsman was stupid enough the grab the staff and take it for himself, he'd abandon his sword for the staff wielder to snatch up and use against him. Grabbing the staff would not be a smart idea, unless said grubby little fingers had a suicidal master. Or if the swordsman really was just plain stupid. |

Well you said they had equal skills, so if the swordsman was stupid enough to grab the staff, then the guy with the staff would be equally stupid, and not bash his skull, or grab the sword. |

Fair enough, but if the swordsman did get the staff, the former wielder of the staff would snatch up the sword, as he is just as smart and/or stupid as the swordsman. |

no you can't a13 sorry you'll lose the battle in an instance but you can win by just using a bit of those muscle and just swing it towards the staff , why the staff? cause if you got the staff you'll win but if you try to hit the user and miss , you're cooked |

Swords are heavy and hinder their users' movement. A staff is light and quick. If the sword does manage to hit, the staff user is as good as dead. But if the sword wielder misses his first strike, it's hard to just flip around and keep fighting. While he/she is regaining their balance, the staff user can easily bash their skull open. |

The sword is heavier, it takes longer to swing. I went with the staff, since if that first cut of the sword (although it could eviscerate someone) misses, then the wielder's going to get a facefull of wood. |

Assuming both wielders are even in skill and are masters of each then each would know their strengths and weaknesses. The staff wielder would have to use the staff almost like a spear and keep a distance between him and his opponent. You can easily deflect the blow of a sword with a wooden staff. You just have to know how to do it. You can't flat out just block. The sword wielder would have to try to find a way inside as that is the staff's weakness. All in all the staff has a better advantage as it's easier to keep the opponent away than it is to move in close. Moving in close is also dangerous. The staff could also kill quite easily if you know where and how to hit. |
