Okay, so recently I have been playing two very, VERY good card-based RPG games. They are called(as the title says); Baten Kaitos Origins and Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean(listed based on game timeline). Both these games have drawn in because of three great things about them(well two for the BT: EWatLO). 1) The gameplay. There is so much about the actual gameplay that is awesome. I mean, the battle system for both games offer their own quirkiness. I like the combo system of Origins, but EWatLO offers the ability of having more then 3 characters total. XD And then there's the strategy involved with gathering items in your "magnus". Every item you get offers some kind of change to your stats('cept a select few). And then the music hits ya, giving you a distinct feeling for every area of the game. Like in a place called the Endmost Bethel, it gives you a very tranquil, churchy feeling. Overall, it gets an 8.5(9 for Origins) out of 10 for gameplay from me.2)The plot. I literally get a plot-gasm because of how freakin' AMAZING the plot is. Unlike the stereotypical "world domination" stuff, there's a huge amount of secrets and stuff that keeps you wondering, "Who the hell turns out to be evil/good next?!" And if you play through Origins, you'll get to see the entire basis for EWatLO set up, as Origins is the prequel(it's set 20 years before EWatLO). 10 out of 10 for BOTH games in this section. (Applying to Origins Only) 3)The voice acting in Origins is really good. In EWatLO(the first one made), it's kind've meh(kind've robotic-like). But in Origins, tri-Crescendo really got their asses in gear and made some great choices for the voices, as there's alot of emotion behind them. You can really get into the characters. 6 out of 10 for EWatLO and 9 out of 10(Queen Corellia needs some more emotion) for Origins. Overall Score from Tapion: 8.166 out of 10 for EWatLO and 9.333 out of 10 for Origins. Yep, Taps definantly loves this series and hopes they make a new(even awesomer) sequel to Baten Kaitos. |

I never played origins but I own the original one and thought it was a refreshing breath of fresh air compared to anything else in the genre. It kept me guessing the fate of the main character throughout the game and the visuals were colorful but worked. |

The card system works differently for each game. In Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean, it works by you having a horde of weapon and armor magnus(cards) and item magnus in a deck of 60(max) for each character. The weapon magnus work as your attacks(and sometimes weak defense) and the armor magnus are your stronger defense. There are also special attack magnus that cost you MP. Unlike other MP systems, you gain MP as you use magnus. So, say you used something called a Short Sword(basic weapon magnus for the main character(Kalas)), and you did a combo of three of them. Well, that would gather up a certain amount if MP, and if it gathered enough, you could potentially use a special attack magnus to really dish out some damage. Though you can only use a certain amount of magnus in each combo(the combo limit depends on your class level, which will be explained soon). The next piece is armor magnus and item magnus. Both can't really be used in attacks(though some item magnus, like Young Bamboo, can be used to attack). Armor magnus are used when being attacked. When being attacked, you can use a magnus to defend against that attack. Item magnus are mostly stat-changing and healing items, like a potion or fruitcake(attack-up item, suprisingly enough). Another big piece are the spirit numbers. They are in the corners of the magnus, and essentially you think of them like you're playing a card game. If you use two magnus that both have a 2 in the same corner, then you'll get a pair, adding points to how much damage you do, how much damage is taken off or how much health is healed(all that adding is done in percentages, a straight gets you something like +12-13% to your damage). The second-to-last piece is the element system. There are six elements; fire and ice, dark and light, chrono and wind. Each element is effective against the other. IE: If I used a fire attack magnus on an ice enemy, it would do extra damage; but if I used an armor magnus of the opposite element, it would detract from the damage done to me. Wierd, yeah, but still workable. Just a note: Fire <=> Ice, Light <=> Dark and Chrono <=> Wind. The last piece of the EWatLO battle system is how your class level affects the battle. The higher your class level, the more cards you get in your hand, the more cards allowed in your deck and the more cards you can use in a combo. At the lowest class level, you can only have 30 cards in your deck, 3 cards in a hand and 2 cards(I think, you can clear this up for me, Bardock) per combo. Later on, this can go all the way up to 60 cards in a deck, 7 cards in your hand and 5 cards per combo. Well, that's the original's card system. Looking at it, I've realized that Origins and EWatLO have a great amount of differences between them. Let's start on Origins now so you get an idea about how different they are. The very first thing I should say is that instead of each character having their own deck, there is only one, combined deck(though you can kick characters out of the deck, effectively kicking them out of battles). (Personal Note: I don't like the combined deck.) Second, instead of weapon magnus and armor magnus being your attack and defense, they are equipments. During battle, you can equip any weapon/armor at the beginning of your combo, since they have a spirit number of 0(IE:They can start ANY combo). Another large part is that since the weapon magnus are now equipable, they were replaced with something else. They were replaced with a set of three magnus that you will need alot of, Weak Attack(with a spirit number of 1), Medium Attack(spirit number of 2) and Strong Attack(spirit number of 3). They are basic attacks that will do physical damage, unless you have a weapon magnus equipped(then they do the type of damage matching the element of the weapon). In this game, the spirit numbers work differently. Instead of being able to do pairs(like it's a card game), they are used in combos. You can use up to 8 cards in one combo(for two of the characters, it gets more complicated with the third); an equip, weak attack, medium attack, strong attack, level I special, level II special, level III special and level IV special(specials will be explained in a bit). The third character has a more complicated system because her attacks kind've work like 3/3 time. She gets this many attacks: equip, weak attack, 1+ attack, medium attack, 2+ attack, strong attack, level I special, level II special, level III special and level IV special. The #+ attacks are the add-ons. Okay, on to specials and the MP system. The MP system from the last game has returned, being almost exactly the same as the last one, though it only goes up to 5(though a level I special at 5 MP would really only use 1/5 a bar). Though a new add-on was made to the system; the MP Burst. The MP Burst is when you have 5 MP(you can only use it after a certain class level). It allows you unlimited MP for one combo, though after it runs out, you have no MP for awhile. Specials in this game also work differently. Yes, they are also leveled, but only up to level IV, unlike EWatLO's level VIII specials. Each special is also able to be comboed to the last, unlike EWatLO(each special in that game ends the combo). IE: I could use a weak attack and a medium attack, then add any special. As long as I have the necessary MP and that special attack's magnus in my hand. On to the element tree in this game. Instead of the six elements of EWatLO, there is only 5; dark, light, fire, ice and lightning. Also, instead of each element being effective against the next, the enemy's weakness is decided by their elemental defences. You could be facing an ice enemy that's weak to light, not fire or lightning. Well, the final piece of this battle system is how class affects it. Just like in EWatLO, the higher your class; the more cards you have in your hand, the more cards allowed in your deck, the more MP you can gather(and also how fast you gather it) and how many cards you can discard. But instead of having to gather a specific item, you just need to gather enough TP(technical points, you gain them for doing big combos and having a great battle). That's about it on the card systems. If I forgot it anything, I'll add it in tomorrow morning before I leave for school(and subsequently, my trip). |

Don't forget the fact that some Magus alter overtime which is something pretty unique to the game. |
