Dark Deeds

Sometimes the most frightening enemy is not the most powerful...

The village of Senton is finding out the true nature of evil and terror can often strike quietly. Six children have disappeared from the village in the space of three weeks, all have been found murdered in the most horrible ways. All signs point to a human killer, but he has not left enough clues to reveal his identity.

The authorities from the larger cities have been too busy to offer much aid, and the village doesn't have the resources to catch the killer on their own. They have offered what tiny reward they could manage in hopes of finding a champion.

How do you find a foe that you cannot pick out on a scouter? How do you tell who is the evil hidden among these poor souls?

Most importantly, how many more children will die before the killer is stopped?

"Man, it's great to chill and take a break from that old fool." Spopovich said to himself, chilling in the back of an old pickup truck. He had snuck out for a bit of a little relaxer from the constant everyday training. This one dude had picked him up from a side road, and he was hitching up far away from blasted Roshi.

"Now Entering Senton..." Spopovich read a passing sign, as the pickup pulled up next to an old looking convenience store for gas. The burly fighter jumped out the back, and nodded to the driver.

"I'm not going any further into that town... there is a serial killer on the loose, ya know." The old driver spoke to him, quickly starting to fill up, looking shaky. The buff martial artist gave him another look, before leaving him to his truck.

Spopovich thought that was pretty interesting, so he went into the store and leaned against the counter. "So, whats this I hear about a serial killer?" He asked the weary looking woman behind working the register.

The woman stopped what she was doing, and gripped the counter hard. "What are you, a cop?" She said heavily, the lines in her face showing off all the more.

"No, not in the least. Bunch o' pansies." He replied. "Bad news?"

"My daughter..." The woman started. "The cops from the big towns won't do anything, and we don't have the resources here..." She said, her voice cracking as she gestured to a sign.

Spopovich walked over to it and read it while the old pickup driver paid and bid him adieu. It had a couple of obituaries, and a little information, but the jest of it was they were looking for some sort of detective to track this dude down and give him the hard goodbye.

"I'll do it." Spopovich said suddenly, looking up from the flier. It seemed this guy was only targeting kids. Spopovich hated that. If every one of those kids this guy killed, Spopovich was going to send him to hell, and bring him back.

"What?" The woman said, sound surprised, her voice almost normal sounding again. "You'll... do it? But we offered such a paltry sum..." She started to ramble.

"Not to worry, chick. I'm on the case." Spopovich replied, stretching a bit. Well, it wasn't exactly a vacation from Roshi's island, but some things just take over, ya know?

He exited the store, leaving the dumbstruck woman behind. The pickup was gone, leaving him with precious little transportation. And people tended to freak out when he flew around, might tip the guy off. Where to start looking...

Spopovich considered for a moment. He wasn't a private guy and his shoe was unfortunately gum free. Cursing his lack of paying attention to whatever classes teach detective skills, he stroked his chin and headed for the local grade school. Lots of kids where at grade schools, right?

"Hey, kid!" Spopovich yelled to the first one he saw, walking up to the school. The kid took one look at him, and immediately took off running the other way. "Hey, wait a second, kid!" The burly warrior yelled, running after him and... tackling him to the ground. The kid looked frightened out of his mind and was laying there gasping for air. "Uhh... sorry."

"P-p-please don't kill me, mister." The kid responded, wide-eyed.

"No worries, kid, no ones dying today. I just want to ask some stuff about those kids that went missing. Friends of yours?"

"Some of them..." He responded, looking downcast. Something was really wrong, he saw it in his eyes. "But I'm not supposed to talk about it."

"Not supposed to to talk about it?" Spopovich questioned, stroking his chin, giving the kid ample time to run off. "Hey kid wa.. ah, forget it. I hope you get shanked."

Spopovich found himself eating an ice cream cone he bought off the ice cream man parked outside the grade school. He had wandered around in there for a while, but the teachers got scared and the police asked him to leave. Didn't they know he was trying to catch this guy? Cops, man.

He leaned against the side of the truck, causing it to lean as he licked his ice cream. "If I were a pyscho child slasher, were would I be? Eating an ice cream cone watching the school..." He mumbled to himself, shifting his eyes and moving on. Things weren't making much sense, who told that kid he wasn't supposed to talk about it?

Then he saw that chick from the store picking up her son from school- turns out it was the boy he talked to earlier. Curiouser. He walked over quickly.

"Hey, chick. 'Sup?" He introduced, flexing a bit. She wasn't amused.

"I'm just picking up my son, okay? Billy, say hi." She ordered.

"Hi.." Billy muttered, looking a little bruised from their encounter earlier.

"Oh, yeah, sorry Billy. What's your name, chick? Think I'm making some progress on this case." He told her, smirking.

"Margaret. Your ice cream is melting, don't bother. The cops didn't even try to find this guy, how is a dimwit like you supposed to?" She insulted him, driving off quickly.

"What a..." The sound of a truck blowing its horn distracted Spopovich, and he took to the streets once more. Things weren't looking too bright. This stuff was supposed to be easy. Wasn't it? He wasn't sure. He tossed his cone aside, and went to a local restaurant to drink. Maybe some cola would help him think this though.

A couple hours and several bottles later, he still wasn't clear on what the heck he was doing. He considered just ditching out on this and going home. But then Billy walked in, and Spopovich called the shaky kid over.

"Hey, I know who you are now, you're Spopovich, right?" The kid said, after Spopovich had bought him a drink. Coke, again.

"That I am." Spopovich smirked. The whole world had heard of the might of Spopovich.

"Man, you sucked pretty hard last tournament you were in." Billy laughed at him, and the burly fighter glared back. "B-but, I still cheered for you. Haha..." He added on.

"Good save." Spopovich congratulated, sipping on his drink. "So, tell me about these friends of yours..."

The kid told him all about how the ones he knew were scared for days before they disappeared. The teachers and parents wouldn't listen to them, but they were terrified. They stopped sleeping and it showed. They saw shadows everywhere, and started whispering weird things. And then, one day, they were just gone... only to show up on the local news later in the week, a mutilated corpse. Billy was terrified, but his mom was adamant someone would come and solve their problem.

"I just wish it didn't have to be you. Why couldn't we find someone better?" Billy made a dark joke, and they both laughed about it.

Spopovich kind of liked kids. They loved watching a good brawl, they could be kind of stupid sometimes, but they were always fun to entertain. Little brats. He rubbed Billy's hair, which he didn't seem to like, and they parted ways. Billy had to get home or his mom would kill him or something.

It was getting dark outside, and Spopovich thought about his own childhood. His Dad would have tried to kill him anyway, always blaming him for the death of the mom he never knew... beating him unmercifully nearly every day. Its no wonder he had turned out as screwed up as he was. He was hating people that screwed with kids more and more.

The Merchant of Pain took a look around, and decided it was time to break into some places.

Spopovich checked out the school first, he figured there had to be some stuff there. He busted in late, though the window. He'd be out before anyone noticed. He had a sudden flash back to his teen years, when he would do some B&E all the time with the boys.

Good times.

The muscled maniac eventually found what he was looking for- files on the kids. Nothing seemed to be out out of the ordinary about them...

"What's this?" He mumbled to himself, noticing that all the kids files had the same symbol. Little, in the corner so you'd have to really look to notice, but... it was there. He skimmed though a couple of other files and noticed a bunch of kids had them. Including Billy. "Figures."

"What a lucky break, didn't think the first place I'd look would have anything." He smirked at his own magnificence, before riffling though some files in the desk. Nothing looked promising, till he came across a leather-worn book. "Is this human flesh?" He asked the universe skeptically, running his hand over it before cracking it open. "R'yhel Ilena..." Spopovich read aloud, and felt a tingle all over. "What the hell are Deep Ones?" He questioned, and then he was out.
_

Spopovich awoke several hours later in a daze. They must have used some pretty potent drugs on him, he thought, but the truth was the book itself attacked him. He shifted his eyes around. They didn't know he was awake yet, two weak bodies in robes were holding him. Looked like they were in some kind of dark, secret place. It smelled of blood and human flesh. He wrinkled his nose.

On the center sacrifice table it looked like Billy was strapped down, and they were already working on him. Poor kid. They were torturing the hell out of him. Spopovich blocked out his screams, sorry kid, its too late for you. I'll give these guys the same treatment. But first to find who was in charge...

There. Tugging out Billie's heart.

The leader walked over to him then. "I know you're awake, Spopovich..." She said, in a girls voice. "You must be wondering what is happening. I'm sure you're frightened..."

"Not really."

"I'm sure you're frightened.." She repeated, glaring from under hear hood. "But don't worry, there is no killer. The whole town is involved in this. We have to do it, to appease Berith... lest he kill us all. And... he gives us things... the crops have never been better..." She rationalized.

"You are one sick chick."

"Silence! Berith wanted a truly pure soul, so we left some of the bodies we used for our rituals out and offered a paltry sum, and I knew who ever would take it would be a noble and righteous figure. And, here you are, ready to be sacrificed for our village!" She shouted, and received a cheer from the crowd.

And then she was hit with a flinging body, sending her stumbling backwards. Spopovich had already killed the other one, and stood up unsteadily. "Boy, did you get the wrong number." He said, letting himself enjoy a hearty laugh. Most of the cultists looked shocked, and then rushed him.

"Damn, I'm gonna kill the hell out of all you." He assured them, before doing exactly that and making sure to gut them with every punch he threw. One of them had his hood fly back as Spopovich ended his miserable life. "Hey, ain't you the ice cream man?" He asked, before throwing him down and stomping on his face. "You're ice cream sucked."

He made sort work of most of them, before grabbing the leader by the hood and dragging her to the slab, strapping her down right next to Billie's corpse. He pulled her hood back to reveal... "Margaret? This was your own kid, you *****." He said, totally disgusted.

"I've sacrificed more then anyone for HIM." She replied, and she looked so sure of herself. Right up till the cutting started. And, in the end, she knew what all those kids felt like when they were strapped down here. And she knew what a blood choked scream felt like.

Spopovich rubbed his hands on some rags afterward, and looked around. Seemed like most everyone in town was down here.

Good, it'd save him the trouble of looking for them.

He didn't pause to consider the ramifications of killing an entire town full of demon worshipers as he walked towards the exit. This may be due, in part, to a full gone demon standing there.

"Berith, right? I figured there was a one in two chance you actually existed." Spopovich said, sighing heavily.

"My worshipers? All dead?" He growled. "And I bet there isn't any children heart left either..." He said, disappointed.

"Why did you do this, so I can write it on your tombstone."

"Why? Haha... silly human, I'm so much higher on the food chain then you... I was hungry, that's all. Nothing personal. Its like a human eating veal, I love the taste of young fresh meat. And I thought to myself, why am I doing all the work?" He continued, drooling a bit at the very thought. "So, I decided to start farming. I established this village for the sole purpose of harvesting their kids... and they were so accommodating. Do you know how little it takes for a human to do unspeakable acts?" He explains, smirking. "Who are you?"

"Looks like your worshipers tripped on acid and watched The Wicker Man, so I'm here." He said jokingly.

"Funny, I was going for more of a Lovecraft thing..."

Spopovich chuckled, then put on a straight face. "Now, I'm going to send you back to Hell- the hard way."

"What are you, some kind of exorcist?!" The demon said, slightly alarmed as Spopovich started to charge at him.

"Something like that. Wolf Fang Fist!"

"Fool, no mortal punch can- ARGH!" The weakling demon yelled, as he struck right in the face. Followed by several more punches, too quick for him to keep up with. When the demon finally caught his second wind, they traded blows for a while, but he was no match for Spopovich. And then the demon learned the meaning of the word unspeakable.

Later on, Spopovich finally made his way outside just as the sun was coming up. "Cliche." He remarked, wringing the blood off his hands. "Man, I ain't ever having kids."
