Smoke piled into the air, engulfing what was left of the brilliant sky. Not even a single star could be seen. Screams echoed throughout the valley and cries drifted into the ears of the terrified soon-to-be-victims. The streets are filled with the thumping of cargo being dragged against the concrete. The villagers grabbed what they needed and scurried to get away from the Vagabonds that were terrorizing their town.

These are only just some of the savage events that played across the memories of Alphonse. Still even as a teenager, one could only see so much pain. And he had seen it all. Perked on a ledge of a church he gazed down at the ant size figures, squirming around pitifully trying to find their place. A small chuckle rumbled deep in his throat, how could he find this funny? That in his eyes it wasn’t about which side was right or wrong, they both sinned.

The Vagabonds for one had made the obvious impact on any normal person’s point of view. They were the hunters and the villagers were the prey. It was apparent which side was good and evil. But with the fuse of each one fending for their lives, they have completely forgotten of their prosperity.

But as the night’s breeze carried another cry, one that was softer, it was similar to that of a newborn. Deserted by its parents, instead they took their valuables instead of the child. Was this really what Alphonse Elric was called to do, saving the people that would turn on everything in an instance when faced with danger?

How could it be that this was the path he had chosen, to save the lives of the selfish, greedy, and uncaring people in this world. One could argue that it wasn’t them, when faced with a mortal crisis, their instincts take to action. Then who was it?

The boy glanced into the blazing red sky, only to find that the question couldn’t be answered by anyone else but himself. This was the truth he must carry on. He was all alone in this world. His thoughts were cut off as cheering and laughter echoed into his ear. From his left a horde of drifters charged at the scrambling villagers. Their shrieks and yelling doubled over as the space between the two became closer and closer until the ground was stained in blood.

Alphonse’s eyes dulled at the scene, he had seen much brutal slaughtering. At a very early age his mindset was locked. His body weight shifted to us other leg as his body straightened. Alphonse stood at a height of 6’1, tall for his age. His body wobbled a bit as it balanced itself on the ledge. Another breeze picked up, playing around with his long untangled hair.

The fighting below, or more of a massacre, was still continuing. But it seemed now as if a line of bodies lined up the mark where the vagabonds would continue no further. Alphonse’s eyes narrowed as he watched one of the members drag a woman through the pile of bodies. The men snickered and cooed at her, she was still alive.

He dragged her by her hair as the woman clutched at her side. Red embers of blood escaped the grasp of her fist slowly leaking out. Finally, she was thrown towards the ground as the man withdrew a sword from his belt. The edge was rough and had seen the blade and flesh of many. Its dull edge flashed white in the moonlight, as the man slowly turned it until it was inches away from the woman’s chin.

“You’re a looker lady,” pointed out the man “But I guess orders are orders.”

As the man lifted his sword and heaved it towards the woman’s neck, he stopped short as a high pitch wail broke the silence. Standing in a corner of a burning building was a boy of the age of three or four. His fists were curled up in a ball over his eyes as wet droplets of tear ran down his face.

“Run, Run! What are you still doing here!” shouted the woman, whose face was stained with sweat and tears.

“Mommy…No….” croaked the child.

Alphonse’s eyes widened at the scene, his mind fluttered back into the past. Memories that he locked inside his head, which he rather have forgotten flooded his mind. He could see himself as the same age as the boy. He was holding his mother’s hand.

They had just come back from the village square after buying the groceries. They were both smiling. In those times, Alphonse was sure everything would remain like this forever. It was the happiest moments of his life. And then that fateful day had come. It was his tenth birthday and he was waiting patiently for his mother to get home with the cake she promised him.

Hours ticked by with no response. Alphonse’s anticipation dulled at first. He was getting angry and frustrated that his mother might have forgotten. As the time dragged on and midnight was just around the corner. His frustration and anger turned to worries.

His mother had never been this late before. Finally, as if the gods had allowed his mother stepped into the house. She was beaten and her clothes were torn. But Alphonse didn’t care he went over to hug his mother. But as he let go, her blood was all over his hand. She gave him a final heartwarming smile before collapsing on the ground.

The images that began to fill Alphonse’s head soon began to disperse. His hands were on his hand grabbing it as if possessed. His eyes were bloodshot and had a haunting look on his face. As his vision began returning back to him, a blurry image began to form. He wasn’t clear of what was happening but could make out small details. It seemed as if the scene below had changed, there was tension in the air.

The toddler was being cradled in the mother’s arms. The men circled around them, snickering and laughing. Alphonse’s spasm had settled down, he was hunched over on all fours. Sweat poured down his head.

This was what the gods granted him for seeing too much. Every time something reminded him of his past and happier times with his mother. This would happen, a breakdown of his entire self. These were the memories he needed to keep locked up, and better off without.

Slowly but steady Alphonse staggered to stand up. His expression was far away and his hands were still shaking. He took a step forward to peer down upon the ruckus that was going about.

Crimson blood was the color of the area around the men. The mother still clutching the child was on the ground. Blood poured out of her like a river. The child was crying as loud as possible. But it didn’t bother Alphonse, no what bothered him was that the men were laughing at the scene.

Is it that the men are truly evil or are they just the individuals that are misguided and lost in the world? Alphonse’s hair stuck up on their end as he grinded his teeth together. His fists did a repetitive motion of clenching itself and then releasing. The men’s laughter grew even more obsolete and disturbing as time dragged on.

As another breeze picked up to, almost as if to blow the spirit of the mothers away , cleanse the sin that was brought upon this town. On top of the church’s ledge there was no one.

There was an eerie silence as the gust of wind made its way away from the valley. The men stared at the figure that had appeared in front of them. At first it was signs of fear, but they soon relaxed themselves as the figure took on the appearance of a mere boy.

“Lookie here fellas we’ve got another one,” chuckled the man in front.

The rest of the gang laughed with him as the man in front drew his sword. He twisted it around in the moonlight to examine the crimson blood that ran down it. Finally, with a stroke of his wrist he slashed the blade to the side, expelling the blood from his sword.

“The rest of you can leave if you want,” offered Alphonse “Or stay and die, either way it suits me.”
The group of vagabonds looked at each other and howled in laughter. Alphonse just kept staring at the group with his nonchalant look. He was slowly but deliberately counting in his head, till when he was going to repay them for their actions.

“Wait…Don’t tell me…You’re the person that the mayor sent for help?” laughed the man.

Alphonse nodded at the question and another earful of howling laughter echoed through the town. He was already on ten now, and the laughing had become quite annoying. Without hesitation, Alphonse sped over to the man that seemed in charge and broke his arm.

The laughing stopped as a screeching cry replaced it. Side stepping to the man’s right he took his other arm and snapped it like a twig. The sword he was holding fell to the ground. And right as it hit, it seemed that they were both in a synchronized rhythm. Both useless now and dead.

The rest of the men that were still gathered around cringed at the sight of their followed comrade. As their gaze met Alphonse, they shivered and stepped back. Each step they took precisely until breaking out and running through the crumbled buildings, never again to return.

He couldn’t believe how easy it was. If the people in this village had the courage to face up to them, he wouldn’t have been summoned at all. But humans are selfish, all of them trying to reek self benefits instead of what they believed in. Alphonse gave out a sigh as he turned around. The toddler was still there, his gaze fixed upon Alphonse. He didn’t cry anymore, his expression was very blank. Alphonse felt bad for the boy; he had witnessed so much pain at this age. Only fate would know what becomes of him.

“Common kid, let’s get your mom a decent resting place,” said Alphonse.

Alphonse walked over to the pool of blood and pulled the woman up into his arms. He didn’t care if his clothes got dirty, or the stench of blood. The least Alphonse could do was burying her.

“Mister, what about him…” croaked the toddler.

Alphonse spun around to see the shocked face victim he had killed early. His eyes shifted from the toddler to the body still on the ground. It amazed him that even after all he had witnessed, the kid still wanted to bury someone who had brutally killed his mother. For the first time in a long time, Alphonse’s lips curled back and smiled.

“Yea, sure,” said Alphonse “Let’s find them some flowers as well. “

I guess in the end, the most innocent human beings are the ones that love. Love to the end and keeps on…loves.

As the morning birds began to chirp, and the dawn just a few minutes away. The world hasn’t changed even with the generosity and kindness he was shown. It might just never change.
