Water dripped from an old rusted faucet and pinged against the porcelain sink that looked out of place on the swollen wood counter. Against the boarded up windows mother nature sent one of her weapons, the rain. The building was over one-hundred years ago and though in it’s prime it may have served as a vacation destination, now it was abandoned and only those without standards found refuge. There were bowls, pots and other water collectors spread across the floor. Each of them were strategically place to collect the water that seeped through the worn roof. The combination of noise was symphonic as a lone warrior rested on a pile of straw and nothing but his clothes to keep him warm.

The warrior laid still as the sounds of the storm outside intensified. He had a dark head of hair, a mop of unruly strands and a stubble of a beard in it’s third day of growth. His eyes watched the water drip from a sagging spot on the ceiling. There was a ring of yellow and at the center, the water would gather until it’s weight sent it plummeting to the water filled pot below.

Outside the old building, mother nature unleashed her wrath onto the earth. Rain fell to the ground, each one like a missile dropped onto it’s enemy. The wind pushed trees sideways and made traveling difficult for many and thought it was midday, the sky was dark with clouds as they rolled over the tormented city. Bolts of lightning illuminated the sky for seconds before the darkness returned. The scene was picturesque.

Back inside the building, Yajirobe rested. He had traveled almost a week before reaching the city. It was only the first leg of his journey. His destination was the next city just three days away. Time was running out. Yajirobe glanced at the broken quartz of his digital watch that was strapped to his traveling pack. It read a quarter pass two in the afternoon.

“Oh crap,” murmured the warrior as he jumped to his feet and made his way to a nearby chair.

On the rickety chair were the rest of his supplies. Yajirobe gathered them up as he listened to determine if it had quieted down outside. He looked around to make sure he had everything. The warrior smiled as he walked towards the door. He was happy to be leaving this place. The door creaked as he pulled it open and left the room. Yajirobe didn’t bother to shut it.

“Nobody in this place to care,” he thought as he descended the stairs.

The warrior glanced at the watch again and hurried down the remaining flight of steps and emerged onto the bottom floor. The lobby area was old and worn. The walls were covered in mold and most of the windows were nothing but glass and debris on the ground. This allowed the rain to saturate the lobby floor. There was about three inches of water and as Yajirobe walked from the base of the stairs to the building exit, his boots sloshed with each step. He pulled his clothes tightly against his body in an attempt to keep dry and comfortable but it was useless. As if mother nature had it out for him, the rain began it’s horrendous assault on the warrior the moment he started his journey. His smile faded and was quickly replace with a frown.

“This is ridiculous,” he thought.

The city behind the lone individual faded in the background along with the storm that seemed to hover above it. Yajirobe found himself on a long straight road. The ground was speckled with light as the sun peered through the clouds. Yajirobe passed through one of them, stopping a moment to enjoy the warmth.

“This is much better than that damn rain,” he thought as he rung out a bit of water from his shirt sleeve.

His watch beeped, indicating that there was just over two days left to reach his destination. Yajirobe finished his moment in the sunlight and continued along the street. He began to whistle a childhood melody that helped him to concentrate and kept his mind from wandering. However it also distracted him from his surroundings.

In the distance, hidden amongst the trees, two bandits watched the lone traveler. Their clothes were ragged and their feet bare. Each of them were thin and toned. They had little fat on their bodies due to malnutrition. They were hungry and desperate. They hoped that the traveler would be loaded with items that they could sell off for a profit.

“We’ll wait until nightfall,” stated the larger of the two.

“Fine with me,” snarled the other.

The clouds were thinning and the sky morphed from grayish blue to a deep shade of purple as the sun began to descend behind the mountains. What little light from the setting sun illuminated the valley that Yajirobe was trekking through. It allowed him a final opportunity to search for a place to camp during the night. He looked for gatherings of large stones or tall trees. The rocks would provide a nice place to pitch a tent off the side and the trees would have provided him with an off-the-ground spot to rest. A few minutes had passed and he spotted a tree just twenty yards to the left. He smiled as it would make a perfect spot for the night.

“Good,” he thought.

Yajirobe sprinted towards the tree and practically walked up the wide trunk until he reached the first branch. The tree was a massive oak and the branches were wide and thick. They allowed Yajirobe to sprawl out and soon he was fast asleep.

“Lets move,” whispered one of the bandits.

“Right behind you,” replied the other one as he followed his comrade towards the large tree that their prey had crawled up.
