The golden hills stretched for miles with no end to the vastness of the desert land. There were no landmarks or obstacles to chart where you’ve been or where you were going and only an experienced traveler would be able to guide himself, using the sun or stars above. There was a set of tracks that led over one sandy hill and faded slowly as the wind smoothed out the markings, trying to erase any evidence of intrusion. The tracks belonged to a lone warrior, bundled to protect himself from the elements. Strapped across the traveler’s back was a barrel of water. Each step was heavy and left a deep imprint within the sand. This was again, quickly erased by the wind.

Yajirobe breathed through a filtered mask as he traversed the stretched land that was drowned in golden sand and bathed in a relenting heat courtesy of the sun. His clothes were stained with sweat as he lumbered forward, the weight of the water barrel on his back slowing his movement. Yajirobe cursed under his breath as he continued through the desert. His body was sore, his legs aching under the weight. His shoulders were bruised from the straps that held the barrel against Yajirobe’s back. There was a gust of wind and it kicked up a plume of sand, minimizing visibility for Yajirobe.

“Damn it,” cursed Yajirobe as he squinted his eyes to shield from the wind and sand.

He looked out into the distance at something he thought he saw. The wind died down and the sand began to settle. His eyes adjusted and revealed that there was nothing in sight. Yajirobe pulled out a compass from his satchel and stared at it. For a moment the dial was spinning and eventually found it’s direction. The needle pointed north and so Yajirobe adjusted his direction to head South-East. In this direction was where he would be heading and at the end of his trip, an old friend of Master Roshi’s waited for the barrel that he carried on his back.

“How did I get suckered into this mess,” thought Yajirobe as he put the compass away and resumed his long and lonely walk.

They had been following him for almost two days, keeping out of sight by hanging back about a mile. The maneuvered to keep the sun on their backs so that their soon-to-be victim would not be alerted. They traveled by foot, the two stalkers, as they almost skated across the sand.

“He hasn’t spotted us,” alerted Drake, the taller one.

Ekard replied with a nod. He didn’t speak much, and his small stature would leave you surprised to know that he was leading this little excursion.

“We’ll keep on him until dark,” Ekard replied, “Then we’ll move in.”

Drake smiled as he looked back at the small figure in the distance. His eyes were on the barrel that was strapped to the traveler. His skin was dark and his eyes even darker. The two bandits were bundled in desert gear and the symbol of their gang was prominently displayed on the cape that draped over each of their backs. It was a symbol of a cobra and underneath read, Desert Snakes.

The Golden Sea Desert was a vast land of nothing. A destination that welcomed death and the daring. There was a small town just where the desert met the ocean and it was the sole supplier of food and other necessities to those that dared into the golden sea of sand. The Desert Snakes were a gang of thieves and murderers. How they survived in the desert was unknown to most authorities, but recently they had attacked the town and burned most of the building and scared off any surviving tenants. They had declared themselves rulers of the Golden Sea and those that trespassed were dealt with.

This is what brought Yajirobe to this barren place. His master, Roshi had received a letter from an old friend. Someone who found comfort in the desert and so, lived amongst the elements. In the letter it described how they were unable to get any supplies and that water was running out. This friend was asking for help.

Yajirobe laughed to himself as he trekked through the sand. His steps were heavy as he practically crawled up a sand dune. The wind was strong and caused Yajirobe to struggle. He thought of Roshi asking him to pick up a package from another friend and delivering it to the one in the desert.

“I need to learn when to say NO,” laughed Yajirobe as he reached the top of the dune.

The sun was at the far end of the desert. It’s golden rays began to change as the ball of fire descended to allow the stars their turn to shine. Yajirobe was at the top of a sand dune and he peered into the distance for a small hut or house.

“It’s got to be around here somewhere,” he thought.

Yajirobe was close. The coordinates on the map that Roshi gave him suggested that he was within half a mile of the old man’s friend. Yajirobe continued to look.

The sky began to darken as the change from day to night took place. The air turned cold and quickly cooled the sand that had been baking only twenty minutes earlier. Stars twinkled softly in the night sky, their brightness was no compares an to the one that warmed the planet. The night was when the desert came to life. Creatures of all walks of life would come out of hiding and mill about.

Two such creatures were members of the Desert Snakes and they had been following Yajirobe since he had reached the desert. They had been waiting for the right opportunity to strike and now that it was dark, they had their chance.

“We should get moving,” ordered Ekard.

Drake nodded and the two bandits skated across the sand until they reached the base of the dune that Yajirobe was perched upon.

“This needs to be quick,” Drake reminded.

Ekard withdrew a small blade, about a foot long. He watched as his partner withdrew a similar weapon and they both looked at each other. It was not their first time committing these kinds of acts and so they did not speak. Instead they communicated with hand signals.

Atop the dune, Yajirobe stood, peering into the distance, looking for the building. He was relieved that the sun had taken a break from tormenting him. He marveled at the millions of stars that dotted the night sky and it was then, he noticed a glimmer of light.

In the distance a small light came to life. It’s bright glow illuminated the front door of a small house. It was a porch light. Inside the house, someone must have turned on the light. Maybe they were expecting?

Yajirobe smiled beneath the mask that he wore and began down the sand dune in the house’s direction.

Drake and Ekard noticed their target moving and they quickly began up the sand dune. They made no noise as they barely disrupted the sand. They were experts at moving across the desert and their skills would be useful tonight. In their hands was a small curved blade with hilts that resembled the head of a snake, it’s eyes were bright red ruby stones. Ekard brought up his free hand and motioned forward with a point. It was time.

Yajirobe had reached the bottom of the dune and placed the barrel onto the cold sand. He took a moment to stretch and catch a breath. He removed his mask to breath in the cool night air. The house was close. Yajirobe opened the barrel and dipped a tin cup into the water and doused it onto his face. He dipped again and drank. The water in the barrel rippled as it magically replenished what Yajirobe had removed. It still amazed Yajirobe, the magic of this old wooden barrel and the fact that it would always remain full unless all the water was removed. This was the item that he needed to deliver to Roshi’s old friend. This would solve the problem of ever needing water again. Yajirobe knew that it was important to get this to it’s new home. He replaced the lid and stowed away the tin cup. He had not seen the attack.

Drake quickly appeared behind Yajirobe, lunging forward with his blade. It struck it’s target and cut through cloth but missed the flesh.

“AARGH,” growled Drake with his failed attempt.

Ekard moved even faster as if he were a snake slithering across the sand. He appeared next to Drake and arched his blade forward. It sliced through the air with a whistle.

Yajirobe twisted away from the first attack, the blade cutting his clothes as he dodged the second attack. He fell to the ground and rolled away, kicking up sand to hold them back.

Drake growled again and chased his victim, reaching Yajirobe just as he got to his feet. Ekard was annoyed. They should have easily finished this with one attack and now their target was aware.

“Finish it,” ordered Ekard.

Drake revealed a crooked smile as he swung his blade in Yajirobe’s direction. He slashed in a X motion, aiming for the man’s chest.

Yajirobe dodged the continuous attacks as he backed up. He reached out to grab the attackers wrist after a final attack. The man’s wrist was thick and Yajirobe had to use both hands and all his strength to bring the attacker to the ground.

Ekard noticed the folly as he approached the barrel. He knew Drake could handle the job and began to grab the barrel when he heard a moan. Ekard looked over at his partner who was slowly getting up. A body was laying in front of Drake, blood soaked into the sand. Ekard smiled, knowing that the deed was done. Drake turned to face Ekard and as he did, the smile faded.

The blood did not belong to the body on the ground, in fact the body was moving. It was not dead. Ekard’s eyes widened as he saw the hilt of Drake’s blade protruding from his chest. Blood dripped from the wound as Drake fell to his knees. He coughed blood and tried to speak but he doubled over with a final breath.

Yajirobe was shaken, his nerves tensed and he got to his feet to see that the other attacker was enraged. Yajirobe prepared for the attack as his opponent rushed in his direction. Yajirobe didn’t mean to take the man’s life but he had to defend himself in order to help a friend of Roshi’s.

Ekard howled as he left the barrel and rushed to avenge his friends death.

“You’ll pay, you scumbag,” he yelled, raising his blade and withdrawing another.

Yajirobe looked around and then back at his approaching attacker. He was unarmed and considered retrieving the blade from the body before him.

“There isn’t time,” thought Yajirobe.

Ekard closed the distance and soared onto the air, slashing at Yajirobe before landing back onto the sand. The thin blades of his weapons moved through the air with a slight whistle. The dull metal reflected no light and made it hard for anyone to follow their movement.

Yajirobe jumped back, dodging the attack as he scrambled around, rushing up the sand dune. There was another swipe of the blade and Yajirobe arched his back in pain. He had been struck.

Ekard’s face was contorted as he yelled again, swinging the blade back at Yajirobe. He had already wounded the man with a gash across the target’s back. A stripe of blood had started to penetrate the fabric.

“You’ll die in this desert,” yelled Ekard.

Yajirobe struggled to keep his footing as he turned to face his attacker. He lunged forward, dodging the blade and struck the bandit with his body. They both fell onto the sand with a thud and rolled to the bottom of the dune. As the sand settled, Yajirobe was on his back and the bandit was standing above him with his two blades.

“Told you, you’ll pay,” smirked Ekard as he brought the two blades down onto the traveler.

Yajirobe closed his eyes, knowing that he had failed his master and himself. He waited for the tearing of his own flesh and the pain to accompany but it never came. Instead, he heard two soft thuds and a grunt. Yajirobe opened his eyes to see that the bandit was now unarmed, his two blades lay in the sand beside Yajirobe.

Ekard couched as he had not prepared for his own demise this evening. His eyes watered as he tried to cope with the pain. His lungs were punctured, quickly filling with blood as his mouth filled with blood. He could not breath. He looked down at his chest and saw two arrow shafts . They were deep and the damage was irreversible. One had pierced his lung and the other near his heart. Ekard fell to the ground, as he struggled to breath. His watery eyes gazed upon the stars as the cool air whipped across the desert sand. Ekard relaxed as he stared upwards, knowing that this was the end. He coughed a final time and then everything black.

“You okay,” asked the strained voice of an old woman.

Yajirobe got up, not believing that he was alive. He thought for sure that he would have been dead. Instead, this old woman, the friend of Master Roshi’s had saved him. In her hand was an old wooden bow. She had apparently noticed the altercation from her house came to provide some much needed assistance. Yajirobe brushed himself off, wincing at the pain from the wound on his back.

“Thank you,” he said.

The old woman smiled and turned to towards her house.

“We better get you inside and taken care of,” she offered as she began to walk.

Yajirobe looked at the two bodies on the desert floor and shook his head. The desert was already claiming the bodies for itself as the wind quickly began to bury them in the sand. He grabbed the barrel and hefted hit over his shoulders, the pain was intense but he was lucky to be alive. He followed the woman to her house and thought of the story he’d have to tell Master Roshi of this adventure.
