The soft breeze picked up at last, the devastating heat was almost unbearable. The desert was a furnace in the summer heat. Sweat dripped down Alphonse’s head as he continued walking.

He had been through the worst, so why would this be any different? His head spun with thoughts. Mostly his memories go back to the child he had met in Green Ville. When he left the boy he had accompanied him to find a new family to live in. The elderly foster parents that they had met seemed like good people.

They were kind, and never had kids of their own. The boy, whose name was Aleca, also enjoys being there. Although at times he would have a dark look in his eyes. He was still thinking of his slaughtered mother. Alphonse cursed himself for not being able to save her. And somewhere deep inside him, he knew the boy blamed him as well.

As his thoughts engulfed him, the world around him seems to disappear. Before he knew it a cooling breeze touched his heated skin. The refreshing wave made him snap out of his trance. Before him laid a massive oasis filled with plants and luscious trees that blocked the sun, making the temperature stay in neutral zone.

In every oasis lays a fountain of cold nurturing water. Alphonse’s throat ached from the thirst, his voice was raspy and it burned when he tried to talk. The boy wandered around the massive haven looking for whatever he needed. The wild tropical animals here varied from birds to mammals.

Soon as he strolled into the heart of the oasis he could hear the running water. But there was something else that echoed in his ears. The sound was more human like than anything else he had heard before. It was the sound of depression.

Alphonse’s ears perked up as they listen to the cries. The closer he got, the louder the wail was. Until finally, as he moved another palm leaf from his face, a massive fountain was in front of him. Sitting there by the fountain, hunched over was an old man. He had flocks of white hair that lay upon his shoulder. The round hat he was wearing was a sign of his devotion to his god and to keep his hair down.

The man was sobbing with regret. His breath’s were short and heavy. As Alphonse approached him he jutted to the left. His eyes were red from sobbing. Wiping his face with his sleeves he stared at Alphonse.

“Who…Are you… What do you want?” questioned the old man.

Alphonse looked the man over; he had ripped pants and cuts all over him. His face was bruised and so was his shin. He must have gone through hell. His eyes portrayed that to him and more.

“I’m just passing by…” answered Alphonse

The old man’s figure relaxed from its anxious pose and he slouched down on the ground. Again his eyes filled up, and wet tear drops emerged from his eyes. Alphonse turned around shaking his head.

Pathetic… A grown man reduced to this. For what?

But the question was one that the boy was not going to dwell upon. His hunger was draining his strength, he hadn’t eaten in days. His eyes wandered in the air, while he was wondering he had his eyes fixed upon a bird. It was big enough to put up a small squabble but that was it.

As a fluttered of batting wings was heard, a big bird emerged from the nearby tree ready to take flight. Alphonse’s lips curled back as he leaped into the air. His hands curled around the bird’s neck and snapped it in half. Dropping to the ground he laid it on the floor.

Just as he turned the old man was staring at him again. But this time it was more of shock and wonder. His eyes were wide and his mouth fell open. He gawked at Alphonse, who ignored his presence even more as he went to get some wood.

Night fell as the Alphonse warmed his hands against the fire. The old man had moved closer to share the warmth. Alphonse didn’t mind, especially since the crying and sobbing had died down. The old man sometimes would glance over towards the boy. His eyes were filled with hope. Alphonse felt awkward and shifted his bodies at times. But as the weariness crept up to him, his eyes fluttered. And before he knew it he had drifted off into sleep.

***

He was awoken by a sudden tap on his shoulder. The boy jerked up, slamming his head against the old man’s head.

“Ouch!”

The man sprawled back towards the ground, grasping his forehead in pain. Alphonse stared blankly at the man. The old man wiggled around in the ground. His face contorted with pain. Finally he relaxed and bounced back onto his feet. He cleared his throat and spoke,

“I’ve seen you performance the other day and I was quite impressed. My name is Shota and I would like you to accompany me back to Land Of Korin.”

Alphonse chuckled as he moved his hand around playing with the ashes of yesterday’s fire.

The old man cleared his throat again, assuming that Alphonse hadn’t heard him.

“Yea, yea I heard you the first time, but what makes you think that I’ll help someone I don’t even know out?”

The old man thought it through before clearing his throat a third time and pronouncing each slayable out to annoyed Alphonse.

“Because, I wouldn’t be asking it from anyone.”

“And just why you want me to accompany you. You have two feet walk for god’s sake.”

There was a moments of silence. The airs ruffled around the distinguished fire, playing around with it carrying the ashes with it. Shota turned to face Alphonse, his expression was sad and mournful as if he was about to cry again.

“If it was that simple I would have been gone by now, no… Its far more complicated than that.”

Alphonse waved with a hand for the man to continue. Even though he already knew the answer he was going to give after this long speech.

“I was chased away by this horrible monster, I was so scared that I felt all my valuables. But that dosen’t matter. I could throw all the jewels and rubies I had in that crate away. I just want to bring my daughter the souvenir, that’s all. She wanted a glass horse.”

Alphonse’s ears perked up, he listened to the story the man had told and felt a bit of sympathy for the fellow. But, where was the sympathy and mercy for him? No he had to forget the past. He had to walk on.

“You know what old man, I’ll go. But this monster you were talking about, he better pay off.”

At Alphonse’s respond, the old man leaped into the air. He praised every god he knew and says many gratifying words to Alphonse of his kindness. That he wouldn’t go out without a reward. The boy just shook it off and the two continued their walk towards The Land of Korin. The sound of the place made Alphonse laugh.

It was refreshing, to release all the bubbling pain he had within him. Maybe, this experience would also be beneficial to him as well. He could only hope, right?
***

The sun was at its highest peak now. The sky had faded away in its glorious blue and became a peaceful orange. Tanning the sky with its streaks of red and different arrangements of color. The two had finally made it to the outskirts of the Land Of Korin. A thick layer of trees blocked any signs of life. But they could hear it. The trashing of trees falling down, the squawking of birds. This place sounded lively as it could get. But not a single organism showed its face towards the two. Not one.

The two traveled aimlessly in the forest. But to their relief there were animals that crawled around. They were all puzzled at the new presence that had set foot in their habitat. Alphonse was getting greatly annoyed, Shota had been rambling on and on of where he could have left the crate. Alphonse left out a sigh and pulled his hand up to scratch his head. They had already spent the better evening searching for the crate. He even had the old man sit while he flew over the entire area to spot that clearing he had been talking about.

But with no such luck, It was already night and they were still wandering around only in the guidance of the moonlight. Finally, with all hopes drained. The old man started huffing again, preparing for another wave of tears.

Suddenly an ear piercing cry was heard in the darkness. The old man froze with fear as his head shifted from left to right. The sound was almost deafening. Alphonse grabbed the man’s arms as they headed closer to the sound, ignoring the resistance from Shota and his insistence of turning back.

As the two made it out to a small tree they knelt down. There inside the dimly lit cave was a group of men. Above them stood a creature the size of a two story building. It cried out in agony it was chained up. Unable to even fit comfortably in the small cave.

“That’s the monster,” whispered Shota.

“Doesn’t look that horrible to me…”

As Alphonse’s eyes wandered around the cave it stopped at the corner of it. There with an open lid, and a mountain of gold and another valuables in it was Shota’s crate. It seemed as if both of them spotted it at the same time. Shota’s eyes gleamed with desire and hope. Alphonse turned his head and examined the group of men. Doing a mental count in his head. He was sure there were twelve of them.

“I saw we go and pay them a visit.”

Alphonse motioned for the old man to stay back. As he only continued out into the open alone. Unafraid of the humans that surrounded the giant monster. He leisurely walked up to the first on closest to him and tapped them on the shoulder.

“And who the hell are you?”

The rest of the group all seemed to have noticed and their conversation of selling the creature for money soon faded away as they turned their attention onto Alphonse.

“Nothing, I just want to return that crate back to my friend over there.”

The men glanced at each other with a mock smile on their faces. It seemed evidently funny for them that a kid was asking for their treasure.

“How a’ bout you, kid get out of here before things get ugly,” proposed one of them.

Alphonse’s lips curled back into a smirk and he shrugged his shoulders and walked past the men. All eyes were on him as he went over to the crate. He put one hand on the creature’s thighs and patted it. It immediately gazed down upon Alphonse in wonder. Alphonse’s smiled at it and bent over to pick up the crate. Immediately, he felt a hand on his shoulder turning him around. A fist was impaled upon his cheek as he stuttered back a bit.

Using his free hand Alphonse wiped his lip. Nothing but saliva was there. He smirked and dropped the crate. Suddenly a furry of fists and kicks were admitted inside the cave. Screams from the men were heard as bones were broken and skulls were cracked. Within minutes the fighting had ceased and Alphonse came out of the cave with the crate.

Shota eagerly rushed towards his side, rummaging through the crate for his most precious item. Alphonse let him do so as he went back inside the cave. Unsheathing his sword he sliced through the net and chains with a single smooth stroke.

“There you go.”

The creature happily accepted Alphonse’s words and ran into the night. Alphonse watched its departure and gave out a sign returning to the old man’s side. In his hand was a cloth wrapped in a small bean shape.
“This is my reward for your effort and kindness.”

“What is it?”

“It’s the legendary Sensu Bean. Said to heal a man fully.”
