Capsule Corp has recently found a rare fossil somewhere in the desert. The rough conditions and roving bandits are too much for the normal associates, so in turn you've been hired to protect the dig site. Also if possible dig.

Sweat beaded across Yajirobe’s forehead as some dripped from his nose. The drops of water fell onto the floor of the sandy pit that he had been in for hours. The sun, overhead, was at it’s highest point in the sky and the heat that baked the desert land was unforgiving. Yajirobe had his pant legs and sleeves rolled up to keep from overheating. His hands were thick with dirt and grime, his clothes covered in sand and dust. He was bent over, wielding a shovel and stabbing the ground with it. Each strike caused a cloud of sand dust to fill the pit and he would heave the earth up and over his head.

“Watch where you dig fool,” yelled an assistant archeologist.

The wireframe glasses on the man accentuated his look of sophistication. The man had no idea how lucky he was to have Yajirobe accompanying him today and digging for that matter.

“Make sure you don’t ruin the specimen,” he barked as he chugged a bottle of fresh spring water.

“Don’t make me come down there and show you how to do your job,” spoke the man with authority.

Yajirobe ignored the calls, rolling his eyes as he continued to dig. He knew that this job wouldn’t be over until they unearthed the specimen. Yajirobe was tired of the heat, the sand and the snotty know-it-alls that were running about.

“Just chill out and throw me a water,” replied Yajirobe.

The man reluctantly obliged and threw Yajirobe a bottle before walking off to his air-cooled tent. Again, Yajirobe rolled his eyes and took a swig of the chilled beverage. It was cooling to his throat, returning moisture to places that much needed it. He then splashed a bit on his face and tossed the bottle to the side. He continued to dig, careful not to damage the semi-revealed specimen in the ground.

It was just a few days ago when Yajirobe answered a posting for hired help from the Capsule Corp. The flyer had advertised the need for a bodyguard with additional light duty. Yajirobe had run out of zeni and this was a good opportunity to make a quick buck. He also thought getting in with the Capsule Corp would provide him with access to more advanced technology he could apply to his training and such.

When he had spoken to the head archeologist or scientist. Yajirobe was not sure what they were calling themselves. It seemed to change depending on the mood they were in. He was informed that they had discovered a rare fossil in the desert. It was of alien origin, unknown to mankind and extremely confidential. Yajirobe assumed that he was going to serve as a type of security guard for the dig site but he was quickly corrected. The scientist alerted him that desert bandits have been raiding the supply convoy to and from the dig site and have come close to threatening the site itself. Yajirobe now understood his role.

“I need another drink,” thought Yajirobe as he paused from digging to grab the bottle and down the remaining water.

When Yajirobe started, he spent most of his time walking the site but as a few days passed, he grew bored and the help diminished. He thought that this job would never end so then he volunteered to help dig. It was the only way to get the scientists what they needed, and him out of this godforsaken desert. So here he was, playing in the dirt as some nerd barked orders at him. It tried Yajirobe’s patience but he kept his cool. He had to in order to get paid.

Three days had passed for Yajirobe as he woke up to the noise of the generators that powered the campsite. The loud hum from the machines vibrated the cot that served as his bed. It was uncomfortable but kept him off the dirt ground. The tent that housed him was small and the fabric was worn and stained. This was not the tent’s first expedition. Yajirobe hopped onto his feet and stretched his aching body. The cot did not provide him with a well rested night of sleep. His muscles ached and his knuckles were swollen. Yajirobe walked to a stack of crated that had a bowl of water on top and a mirror propped up. He examined his bearded face and the bruise below his eye. Yajirobe dipped his hands into the bowl and brought the water up, splashing it across his face. The water was cool and helped to awaken him. He yawned before repeating the process.

“Ahem,” cleared someone’s throat from behind the curtains of the tent.

Yajirobe couldn’t believe it. “You’ve got to be kidding me, he thought.

“We are short handed today and need you to help at the dig site,” said the high-pitched voice of one of the scientist.

Yajirobe shook his head as he heard the footsteps fade. The scientist had already left, assuming that Yajirobe would oblige. The scientist was annoying. Most of them were and Yajirobe counted down until this job was finished. He was tired of the monotony. Each day was the same, standing around, digging and then more standing. It was only last night that some real excitement was provided. That explained the bruising that adorned Yajirobe’s body. He smiled slightly over the incident that took place.

“I better get going,” he thought as he grabbed the bowl of water and dowsed the rest over his head.

Yajirobe left the tent and followed a worn path to the main dig site. He cracked his knuckles and winced as a sharp pain ran up his forearm. He thought of the two bandits that he encountered early and knew they must have been in even worse pain. He smiled again.

It had been almost midnight. The desert was cast in darkness as the cloud filled sky prevented the fool moon from illuminating the camp site. This had provided the bandits an ideal opportunity to pilfer the site. There were only two of them. They were both hidden beneath the layers of dark fabrics that aided in their stealth appearance. Their heads were hooded and only the whites of their eyes glowed in the darkness. These weren’t ordinary bandits. They were specialists, skilled in sabotage, scouting and espionage. They jobs was to infiltrate the Capsule Corp camp site, identify the details of the find and collect any information available. Their employer had offered them a hefty sum to complete the mission. They had less than six hours.

The camp site was quiet. All the lights were out and the generators were winding down for the night. The scientists and archeologists were fast asleep. Their dreams filled with the marvels of what was to come when they had unearthed the fossil. They were unaware of the two men sneaking about their property. It was a good thing they had hired some muscle.

The two men entered the camp site, quickly identifying the main work area. It was still powered by a generator. There was a soft glow of light from within the tent. This was surely from the computer monitors that remained on at all times, processing the information that had been entered from the day’s collected data. This was their target. Inside, they would find the materials their employer was paying them for. They approached the medium-sized tent, making no noise. They were like a fog passing through.

As they reached the tent, one man withdrew a black blade. The metal was dull, preventing any light from reflecting and he used the razor sharp edge to cut a slit into the fabric walls of the tent. The other man had his back to his partner, scouting the area. Peering through the slit, the man could make out the shape of two large tables with several computers and laptops on them. Most of them were on, their screens in standby mode. He heard a gargling noise and his eyes scanned the room for the source.

In the corner, resting against one of the support beams of the tent was a heavier set man asleep on a stool. His arms were crossed over his chest and both feet were planted firmly on the ground. One would have thought he was awake, standing guard but the snores of his slumber spoke otherwise.

The first bandit nudged the second, alerting him of the situation and though they expected some challenges, this one would be easy. The quickly altered their strategy and made their way to the entrance of the tent. Time was passing and they needed to move quickly.

Yajirobe was on guard duty. It was what he had been hired for but the first couple of days had been so boring that he had been helping the scientists with digging. It helped the day go by and provided him with some exercise as well. Tonight was no different than any other. After dinner the smarter men would wash up and headed to their individual tents for their much needed sleep. Yajirobe, instead, would head to the command tent and sleep most of the night under the basking glow of electronics. He knew little about them and only cared that nothing happened to them under his watch. Again, this task was very boring so he slept.

The two bandits were experts at stealth and their approach was undetected. They had entered the tent and one had already began to analyze the computers. It took only a moment to decipher which one they needed. It had an external hard drive wired to it and there was a little green light that flickered indicating that information was being processed. One of the men began his work on the computer while the other stood watch, keeping a sharp eye on the sleeping guard. The room brightened a bit as the screen came to life, leaving it’s standby mode. It had startled the two and the guard shifted on the stool, scratching at his belly.

Yajirobe had woken slightly by the change of light in the room. He would have thought nothing of it except the two shadows that were cast from the eerie glow of the computers. This had alerted him but he remained still. He knew that he was outnumbered and didn’t want to prematurely react to their presence. Yajirobe scratched his belly and continued his sleepy demeanor. He waited.

The thieves were fast at work, both of them now packing away the hard drive into the black backpack that was slung over one of their shoulders. They had grabbed some paperwork that had been nearby and readied for departure. It had only been an hour since they had entered the tent and still nobody had any idea of their presence and what they were doing. Or so they thought.

As quickly as they had entered the tent, the two men left. They passed the sleeping guard and stepped out into the cool desert air. The second thief was passing through the exit of the tent when he was pulled back. He let out a breath of air as he fall onto the ground with a thud. His face was quickly kicked in by the guard’s foot. He only saw the smile on the man’s face before losing consciousness.

Yajirobe had seen them leave and as the second man passed, Yajirobe had got up and grabbed the man’s collar and yanked him back. Yajirobe pulled him to the ground and stood over him with a smile before delivering a powerful blow to the man’s face. Doing this had left him open to the other thief’s attack.

It came from behind. Yajirobe was pushed forward, his back in pain. He slammed into a nearby table and felt another jab into his lower back. Yajirobe moaned from the instant surge of pain.

The assailant had acted quickly upon the disruption of their getaway. He had heard the thud and saw his friend get knocked out. He quickly leapt at the guard, throwing his foot into the man’s back and then threw a jab into the same area. He ducked under a backhand, the guard threw and came up with an uppercut to the guard’s jaw.

Yajirobe absorbed the pain and swung his fist around, hoping to catch the attacker but instead he was caught in the jaw with a fistful of rage. Yajirobe lifted into the air from the blow and fell back onto the table. There was a crash as computers and printers fell onto the dirt ground. Some sparked upon impact.

‘Damn! That’s going to cost me,” thought Yajirobe as he assessed the damage. He had no time.

The thief launched another series of punches to Yajirobe’s face. Each of the blows were quickly followed by another.

Yajirobe put up his arms to protect his face. A few slipped pass, connecting with his cheek and nose, but most pounded against his forearms. They began to go numb. Yajirobe snapped out his leg, connecting with the man’s groin. There was a slight crunch followed by a moan as the man fell to his knees.

“Nut cracker?” asked Yajirobe who got to his feet and started pounding on the kneeling man.

Yajirobe finished the man off with a display of brute strength and lack of finesse. He was by no means an artist and the final work was not pretty.

The commotion had startled a few nearby scientists and stuff and when they arrived, Yajirobe was sitting on his stool. The two bandits were piled on one another. Yajirobe was praised shortly before being reamed about the damage caused to the equipment. He had rolled his eyes and got up to leave.

“I’m heading back to my tent to rest up,” he muttered through a bruised face.

Yajirobe was quickly pulled from his morning thoughts as he approached the dig site. The pit was seven feet deep and thirty feet across by 10 feet. In the bottom, unearthed were the remains of a large beast. It was of alien origin. They had seen nothing like it on Earth. Yajirobe laid his eyes on the remains. He could not make out what the original being had looked like. The bones were all contorted and half of them had been eroded by time.

“Hurry up,” barked a man in a sharply pressed suit.

Yajirobe listened and hurried to a nearby tent. He noticed a large hovercraft in the distance. It had the Capsule Corp logo imbedded on the side.

“What now,” he thought.

Inside the tent there were several scientists and a few suits. There was one man centered between the two groups and he waved me over.

‘Welcome Yajirobe,” spoke the man, his eyes shielded behind some black shades.

“Yeah?” asked Yajirobe.

The man smiled, holding a thick envelope. He tossed it to Yajirobe and his smile faded.

“Here is your payment,” he said with a stern voice. “Your work here is done.”

Yajirobe opened the envelope and inside was a stack of bills. It looked like more than he had been originally offered. He looked at the man and cocked his head to the side. Yajirobe was puzzled.

“We appreciate what you did,” started the man, “stopping the two men last night.”

Yajirobe nodded.

“You prevented some classified materials from falling into the wrong hands,” he finished.

“And you destroyed some equipment,” butted one of the scientist.

The suited man held up his hand to hush the abrupt interruption.

“Please excuse them,” he said. “They are stressed and pressed for time.”

Yajirobe still looked puzzled as he was approached by the man.

“To be honest, we’ve reached a point where we need to limit those that are aware of our newest discovery and well,” the man paused. “That means letting you go.”

Yajirobe was still confused but he didn’t argue. He was being paid and told that he was done. He could leave this desert, these annoying scientists and the boring job. Without hesitation, Yajirobe shook the man’s hand and left the tent, the envelope of money was clutched in his hand.
