Three weeks.

It had been three full weeks today since Bojack had begun to train with Master Roshi. And when he said train, he actually meant “chill out with.” They did nothing but go around and collect new semi-nude and pornographic magazines for Roshi. Bojack excoriated the time he spent with Roshi doing nothing. That wasn’t helping either one of them, nor did it do anything useful – except satisfy Roshi’s libido.

Finally, one day, Roshi expunged the hatred Bojack had for him by offering him to chance to compete in something Roshi titled “Roshi’s Trial.” A bit cliché, but Bojack didn’t care. It was finally time for him to prove himself.

Time for him to prove himself to the man believed to be Earth’s greatest martial-arts master.

Bojack was a paragon of strength, and it was time for the world to realize it. He just needed to be accredited by someone with a bit more fame than himself. It was simple. Roshi would lay out a series of task that he wanted Bojack to complete; and Bojack would go out and complete those tasks. Roshi said there would be no more than five, but most of his students never got past the first two.

What, they was unable to break into a adult bookstore?” He amused himself.

First lesson begins in the morning.” the old man said. Bojack walked behind Roshi into the house, and when they were in, he began to cook dinner for two. That was the routine they had always done. And thankfully, Roshi always trained one student at a time. Bojack had heard rumors that Roshi had trained thousands of warriors in his life.

Eating with Roshi was a soporific event. Neither of them talked, because they had nothing in common. Bojack wasn’t a fan of the old man, but he knew that the master would be a small moiety in Bojack’s success.

Morning came.

Roshi woke Bojack up before the sun had risen. Bojack wasn’t pleased, but the fact that he was going to become even stronger after these trials made up for it. Roshi led Bojack to the northern tip of the island they were on, and pointed north. “Swim that-a-way! Until you see land, no stoppin’! Now tally-ho, young’un!” Roshi needed to stop using lingo back from the ‘80s era.

Bojack laughed. Swim?, he thought, Shit’s gone be easier than a girl drinking aphrodisiac. Bojack dove in head first after taking off most of his clothing, the refreshing water giving him a small boost in adrenaline. He swam, and swam, and swam. He kept swimming until he realized that heading north landed him in an ocean. That fucker Roshi knew what he was doing all along.

But Bojack had no choice to swim and swim. He heard the faint buzzing of a motor engine in the distant. He looked its way, and saw Roshi approaching him on a boat. “Goddamit, you blue alien, I said swim!” Roshi yelled, holding one fist in the air, and the other on the steering wheel. Bojack raised his hand and thought about giving Roshi the finger, but gave him a thumbs-up instead.

Bojack continued to swim at a set rate until he saw the faint outline of a island on the horizon. There wasn’t much longer to go before he heard Roshi say: “Now turn east, Bojack!” Bojack groaned at the top of his voice. He could handle the swimming; the only drawback was that it was boring as mess. Bojack hated being bored. He’d rather be back at the island, rolling blunts behind Roshi’s back and smoking them with his pet turtle.

That was the life. Right now, he had no choice but to swim and swim.

Bojack was laid out on the island, panting for air.

He finally stopped swimming – two days later. It took all the stamina the young alien had to make it this far. He looked over at Roshi who was chilling on his beach chair, getting a tan. He looked at Bojack, and smiled his creepy smile. He was missing a few teeth, and Bojack wanted to knock a few more out. They He had done nothing but swim for the past two days, and all Roshi did was make sure he was swimming by following along with his boat.

Now! Let’s swim back!” Roshi said, standing up, and pointing towards the island. The old man had a good sense of direction, apparently.

Bojack dove into the water, hoping that he would just give out and die. But that would deter him from his goal: knock the crap out of Roshi before he was done here. He swam, and swam some more. This time, it took three days. Bojack had no more in him. He passed out as soon as he stepped foot on the island, right on top of Roshi’s turtle, who was still smoking the blunt that Bojack had rolled for him before he left. That didn’t please Roshi too well.

The next morning, Roshi woke Bojack up just as he had done before – at the break of day. Bojack slumped along, too tired to lift his arms. Thank god he wouldn’t need them. “Now, my young boy, you run around the island until I say stop!” Roshi said, smugly. What a old fuck.

Bojack began to run and run and run. This was just routine training. There were no mind-tricks here. There wasn’t anything Roshi was accomplishing by making Bojack run around and around, except building the alien’s stamina. Other than that, Bojack didn’t feel any different than he would have if he was training at the gym by himself.

Maybe that was the point.

Finally, it seemed like action was about to pick up.

Even though Bojack had to swim to the shore, Roshi informed them that they were going to a tournament in town. Roshi trailed along in his boat, his turtle on deck. When they got on shore, Bojack put his clothes back on, and tried to dry off before the old Hermit began to drag him along. The turtle stayed behind and guarded the boat, a blunt in his small appendage.

Bojack walked along happily. Finally, he was getting to beat on some of the chumps that Roshi found to challenge him. It had to be a set-up. It might have been a legitimate tournament, but Bojack was sure that the contenders would be some of the master’s old pupils. It was time for him to prove that he was the brightest student that Roshi would ever have the pleasure of teaching.

When they got into town, they headed for the tournament first. They offered room and board, so there was no need to spend anymore Zeni to buy a hotel room. The hosts waited no time to get the tournament started when Roshi arrived. Bojack was up first. There was no drawing or a random order of battles. Everything was already set out. Roshi was in the tournament, but he wasn’t scheduled to compete until the final round because, after all, he was the defending champion.

Bojack figured as much. Just before the match started, Roshi told Bojack that he couldn’t use his hands. “No problem, I’mma beat this chump with my ..legs.” Bojack said. He was confident. He had made it to stage three of Roshi’s Trials, so he knew he had reason to feel proud of himself.

Finally, the match started. Bojack had tied his hands behind his back, just so he wouldn’t slip up if the guy pissed him off and would swing a few punches.

Action did pick up.

This opponent of Bojack’s was nothing but speed. He was no thicker than a light pole which somehow contributed to his speed. Bojack would have plucked him out of the air if he was able to use his hands. Since he had a handicap, the alien decided on another course of action. He was going to chase this guy out of the ring. He began to run after the human, who saw what Bojack was trying to do and gave Bojack a good run.

Bojack noticed something particularly odd – he was a hell of a lot faster than he was before. He had done a lot of running before, even more than he did at Roshi’s, but for the first time, it actually made a big difference this time. He was right on the guy’s ass – it wasn’t as if he had anywhere to run anyway. Bojack made quick work of this guy.

He followed him around the edges of the ring, and when he saw his opportunity, he struck. The guy had slipped when he was turning, and Bojack drop-kicked him out of the ring. He hit the stands, crashing into a fan or two on his way out. Bojack had no choice but to laugh. He had won the first round without even laying a finger on the guy. Rather, he used his feet.

But, fair was fair. He won the way Roshi wanted him to.

His next challenge was against a bigger guy, and this time, Bojack wasn’t allowed to use his legs. That was fucked up. Bojack wasn’t capable of sliding around like a snake, so there was no way he was going to be able to put up a decent fight if he was on his ass the entire time.

The guy’s name was Juyto. Bojack wondered when there would ever be an opponent he would face with a normal name, like Bob or Jack, even.

Juyto began to stroll towards a tied-up Bojack.

Bojack couldn’t use his legs, fine. Instead he used his arms for locomotion and began to move around the ring, knowing the guy was all about raw power. He wasn’t about speed. He couldn’t even catch up to a blue alien that was using his arms to move. Bojack heard laughter in the audience. Bastards.

But whatever. Bojack was a entertainer and a damn good fighter. As soon as he saw the opportunity when this guy would make a mistake, he would capitalize on it and become the winner. But Juyto remained spotless. He made sure to stay a few feet behind Bojack in their high-speed chase across the ring. He also made sure not to go too fast so he could turn corners easily without risk of falling out of the ring and getting disqualified like Bojack’s last opponent.

But he came down just as fast.

He was getting tired, much quicker than the other guy. He didn’t have stamina. Meanwhile, Bojack could have run in a marathon with just walking with his hands. It wasn’t that much of a challenge anymore. Bojack couldn’t define it, but there was more to it than just working out. Roshi had done something, something to pump up all of the energy in Bojack’s being.

The guy stopped to take a rest, and after a minute of thinking, he threw in the towel. He walked out of the ring, mumbling a few curse words as he went along. Bojack removed the cloth tied around his legs and stood up. The crowd wasn’t too pleased, but the alien didn’t care about them at that point. It was all about him, after all.

Only two more opponents before Bojack went head-to-head with Roshi.

And that sucker Roshi was about to get it.

Bojack beat the next guy too.

It wasn’t a fair match. His opponent, Jou, was a human. A very weak human. He had only made it that far in the tournament because his last two opponents had other business to attend to so they forfeited. Bojack eliminated him by giving him a swift kick to the side, making him fly out of the ring and into the wall surrounding the crowd.

Bojack couldn’t help but laugh.

He found it humorous, considering his last three opponents had barely put up a fight against him. Maybe he was in the wrong part of the world. The quality of the competition was just incredibly low. He still had Roshi to look forward to, and he knew that with Roshi’s reputation, it would be nothing less than awesome.

He’d try to show the old man pity, that was certain, but the alien was positive he would come out the victory. When push came to shove, it was Bojack and Roshi in the last round of the tournament. They walked to the ring together, keeping their distance just to play to the crowd and make them seem as if they genuinely didn’t like each other. At least it wasn’t a complete lie.

Roshi looked over at Bojack and smiled that same toothy grin as before. What a freak. “You win, you’re by far my best student, alright?!” Roshi said, in that same loud voice. Bojack laughed, and nodded. He then preceded to trash talk the old man, by telling him he needed to change his diaper before stepping into the ring with a warrior of Bojack’s caliber.

Finally, the match began.

Roshi began to power up. His muscles began to bulge, his veins looking like tree trunks. The power level resonating off of the master was incredible.

This definitely was going to be one hell of a match, if not the best one Earth had ever seen.

Then, Roshi attacked.

Bojack didn’t have many options other than to try and block his offense. Roshi threw a punch here, then there. Bojack had trouble keeping up, but it was manageable once Roshi set the pace. It was a very fast pace, too. Roshi was like a bald streak of lightning, his hands faster than anything Bojack had seen before. But for some reason, they never connected with the blue alien. The master must have been holding back.

Bojack tried to land a punch square on the guy’s jaw but to no avail. Even though Roshi had been on the offense, he kept his guard up. He blocked each counterattack Bojack attempted, and then countered that counter with a counter of his own. Once again, Roshi set the pace. Bojack knew he had to switch the match into his favor and the pace as well.

He only had one shot at winning, and that was hoping that Roshi had a heart attack. Hey, the guy was ancient. Finally, Bojack spotted Roshi’s mistakes. Each time he threw a punch, he let his guard down, for just a split second. That was all the time Bojack needed.

Roshi threw a right, and Bojack attempted to jab him square in the ribs. But it didn’t go right. Roshi was much faster than the alien, and his fist connected first. Bojack felt his knuckles touch Roshi’s skin, but without impact. He knew the master didn’t even feel it.

Bojack got back up, and looked at the master. “Bring it, old mothafucka.” Bojack knew he shouldn’t have said that, but maybe he had a chance at winning this. It was obvious Roshi’s age wouldn’t play a factor, so maybe he could make Roshi open up more opportunities for Bojack to capitalize on by getting angry.

It was the only shot Bojack had.

Roshi got mad too.

He wasn’t a fan of disrespect, and Bojack had learned that the hard way. Roshi had always made him pay for whenever Bojack showed a hint of disrespect. But hey, no one liked to be disrespected, least of all Bojack.

So, when he saw that his plan was working, Bojack went on the defensive again. It wasn’t his style, but it was the only thing keeping him alive at the moment. Roshi continued his onslaught of attacks. He didn’t try anything different except the routine punches and kicks that Bojack could keep up with.

Bojack remembered the way that Roshi taught him to harness his ki. He knew that before this match was over, Roshi would put Bojack’s knowledge to the test and test him about that. Bojack was prepared to use his Dodonpa. But he knew that Roshi had something better up his sleeve. He had seen it once before in action, when a guy named ..Goku? had visited. Goku was a cool chap.

But other than that, Bojack couldn’t let his mind stray. He had to watch Roshi and continue to evaluate him and see if he was really as legendary as everyone said.

He lived up to his name and reputation, Roshi did. It didn’t bother Bojack because he knew that one day, he would be even more infamous than the old man. It was something to look forward to. That one day, people from all over the universe would come to where Bojack was living just to ask him to tutor them in the ways of martial arts and everything else.

And Bojack wouldn’t. He would be greedy and not teach anyone else other than himself for the time being. He wanted to be the universe’s strongest warrior, and seeing Roshi in action only made him want that even more.

Roshi slowed down his attacks.

He was allowing Bojack to get on the offensive for the first time. Bojack tried his hardest to connect with Roshi’s face, but it wasn’t possible. The senior was stronger, faster, smarter than Bojack. It was frustrating, seeing his attacks go with so much confidence but being thwarted by an old man who looked like he should have croaked over a few hundred years back.

Finally, Bojack jumped back and got into his Dodonpa stance. “DODONPA!” He said, unleashing the attack at it’s full power.

He didn’t stop feeding it ki either, allowing it to get stronger and stronger. Finally, he saw that Roshi had caught on. The master got into one of his infamous stances, and proceeded to say something along the likes of, “KAMEHAMEHA!” The master unleashed a ki attack much stronger than Bojack’s.

When the two ki beams collided, the arena began to shake underneath the immense pressure the ki was putting on it. Bojack had no choice but to smile; the man did put up a good fight. Well, better than the ones he had seen so far today.

No chance, old man!” Bojack said, before pumping even more ki into his attack. He saw that the majority of the giant ki orb was being fed by him, which only made him more determined. He had to turn the tables. Sure, he was supplying more ki than Roshi’s, but Roshi’s was stronger, and that was working in his favor all along.

Finally, Bojack let go of the hold the ki had on him, and got out of the way of the gigantic ki ball headed his way, filled with the master’s and the alien’s ki. He saw that it was headed towards the crowd, and he couldn’t put people’s lives at risk, so he got in the way of the ki ball, and attempted to kick it in the air.

It didn’t work, Bojack saw.

The ki ball simply deflected Bojack’s leg like it was nothing more than paper. Blue paper. Roshi caught on and ran over to Bojack’s side, who was attempting to slow down the ki ball and hopefully it would disintegrate. It didn’t.

Roshi helped Bojack try to push it back into the middle of the ring, but that wasn’t working either. Bojack pushed Roshi aside, he wasn’t about to let anybody else pay for his foolishness. He knew the ball had to connect with somebody for it to just stop. He was going to sacrifice himself. And he stopped pushing the ball.

He was ready for the ki ball to hit him. He closed his eyes and stretched his arms out, ready as could be. But the ball never hit him. He saw Roshi doing the kamehameha towards the ball, pushing it back even more. It was engulfing most of the energy, but the energy that wasn’t be absorbed was helping to the push the ball into the middle of the ring.

Bojack saw what was happening and rushed to the other side of the ring and did his dodonpa. He was hoping the ball would have an overload of ki and just bust open, like a balloon with too much air. It was simply physics, wasn’t it?

No, it wasn’t. But Bojack knew it would work. He had a feeling about it.

Stuff like this happened in movies all the time. Hell, he even did it in the movie he starred in. The people in the crowd were on the tip of their toes, amazed by what they were seeing. They saw two opponents standing on opposite sides of the rings, trying to save the people. What Bojack saw was a master and his student working together to save the world.

Or a few people. Whatever.

Finally, the ball bust open.

Bojack laughed at the top of his lungs. The attack was successful.

He then fell to one knee. Roshi came over to help him up, and gave him a pat on the back. He began to say a few words of encouragement to Bojack, and when Bojack figured out that Roshi was praising him, a huge smile appeared on his face.

The master had become something like a father to the alien over the three weeks they had been together. And this was going to be their last moment together. Whether or not he passed Roshi’s trial, he could’t stick around any longer. He had someone to meet. Someone by the name of Janemba.

He had to help save the world – his first shot at something this huge. Hopefully Janemba wasn’t full of crap and was just making up something to please the alien and stop his attack. Bojack doubted it. Janemba himself did seem like a good person.

And so did Roshi. But Bojack also knew that the match wasn’t over. So, being as sneaky as a snake, he gently pushed Roshi over the edge of the ring, allowing him to fall on his back. And that secured his victory. Bojack laughed at the top of his voice and began to apologize, knowing it wasn’t a good thing that he did.

He stuck out a hand, offering to the help the master up. Roshi took his hand and pulled himself up and brushed off his shoulders. He then gave Bojack another pat on the back, and told him that he was actually a bright person.

And then it was time to say good-bye. Roshi told Bojack that he was actually one of the most interesting students he had ever had, but he wouldn’t miss him as far as he could throw him.

And then Bojack was off.
