History Lesson

The vastness of space was complex and beyond comprehension. The humans of Earth have always wanted what was just beyond their reach and space travel & exploration was always at the top of that list. With the discovery of sentient beings, commonly referred to as aliens, the determination to expand their knowledge of space increased. Over time, their technology had mingled with that of alien technology and soon, space travel was as common and easy as taking a trip to visit a grandparent or friend. Everyone was doing it. That is if you had the money to spend. It wasn’t cheap to travel and doing so regularly was a sort of status symbol.

If you weren’t traveling for leisure, to a paradise planet or something, then you were traveling for business. Those that couldn’t afford to vacation in space found work that took them to it. The most common and easily available form of work was colonizing or mining.

Colonizing was a way to start anew. Build a new life, a new beginning. Families applied for the opportunity to be included on such endeavors and those that were accepted knew that they would probably never see earth again. Instead, they’d embark on an adventure that would bring them to a new planet, where they would start over and build a second or third hundredth human civilization. If they were successful, those back on earth would hear of the news. If they weren’t so lucky, nobody would even miss them. They were expendable.

With the ever advancing technology of the races, mining was inevitable. To harness the latest materials to manufacture weapons, housing, ships and more, you’d have to mine for those resources. With earth’s minerals almost depleted, humans sought to the stars in search of opportunities to mine the millions of rocks that floated amongst the dark. Mostly these mining colonies were formed in groupings of asteroids or on some mass that orbited a planet. Many alloys were discovered that surpassed that found on earth. With these discoveries, the alloy-rush followed.

Many companies were started, some failing before reaching the outer atmosphere of earth, others within the year. In a mere eleven years, there stood two companies that dominated and held together the infrastructure that was the alloy-mining business.

At one end of the spectrum there was the Space Metal Company. They were a well funded and very resourceful group of business men. They controlled nearly twenty percent of all alloy mining in the galaxy. Their base of operations was on one of the moons of Arieso, far from the spying eyes of any other entity.

At the other end was an up and coming group of determined space goers. They were comprised mostly of family and friends, their forefathers passing down the family legacy of mining. They were known as the Earth Miners Group. They were based out of Earth, operating mostly in the space that fell under the Avalon Protectorate.

Chapter 1

Our story begins with a small family, a mother and child to be exact. The mother was a member of the EMG. She was a Section Chief at one of the mining stations that monitored the company’s expeditions along the asteroid belt. With here was a small boy, an infant not much older than three years. He had been toted along with her since birth. It was customary for members to have their families along. Most of them were related anyways, with the husbands, dads or brothers working the mines and the mothers, sisters and wives working the stations. This is how they lived. The mother’s name was Iritza and her son had his father’s name, Yajirobe. Iritza called her son Yaj for short. It was his nickname. Everyone in the station called him by that name. Like it was said, they were pretty much all family.

As Section Chief, Iritza’s duties were to monitor the miners at sub-stations three and four. These substations were mining sites on asteroids throughout the belt of floating rock and debris. These substations were usually manned by three or four miners and they reported to their Section Chief of their status and finds.

It had been almost two hours since Iritza had heard from her miners at sub-station three. She glanced at Yaj, making sure he wasn’t getting into any trouble. He wasn’t. Yaj was strapped in a walker, peddling with all his strength to get across the floor. Iritza smiled and turned back to her control panel. The panel was glowing with numerous buttons and monitors. Some of the video displayed views of the mining station an also those of the substations. She checked the angles, controlling the view of the cameras with a joystick. She saw nothing. Iritza grabbed the microphone headset and placed it on her ear. She adjusted the mouthpiece and pressed a button before she spoke. There was a long static before it faded to the soft voice of the woman’s.

“Sub-station three! Do you copy?” Iritza glanced at the monitors again and saw nothing. “Three, this is Section Chief Iritza, DO YOU COPY?” The last three words were louder and with a sense of worry.

There was a long drawn out silence as Iritza’s heart started to beat faster. She began to sweat. She glanced back at her son, who was smiling as he slowly closed the gap between her and himself. His feet just would not grip the cold metal floors of the station. Iritza had pondered the worse, getting ready to alert her superior when all of a sudden there was a break in the silence. It was earth shattering, so to speak. Iritza was relieved.

“Section Chief, This is sub-station three. We copy,” came a man’s voice as a figure filled the monitor viewing screen in front of her. The man was clad in a mining spacesuit. It was bulky, fit to handle the extreme conditions of mining asteroids in space. You couldn’t tell if he was human beneath the mirror reflection of his visor. “Iritza, we copy,” he repeated.

Iritza sighed with relief. She let a smile crease her worried face as she replied. “Three, what is your status?”

There was a small delay and the man responded. “We are undergoing difficulties with the com links.” The man tapped the side of his head, indicating a problem with the communication equipment. “We are going to continue with the excavation and return to base within the hour.” he paused. “Do you copy?”

Iritza was troubled by the failing com link. She rarely ever had issues during her command shifts. She reluctantly nodded though he could not see her. “Alright three. Finish the dig and return immediately” she ordered. “We need to fix those com links.”

The man nodded, the movement barely noticeable in his large suit. He walked off, out of view of the camera.

Iritza stared at the screen where the man was once at and then flipped a switch. The screen went black and she turned back to her son. He had finally reached her. She smiled and picked him up out of his walker. “Now, now,” she cooed. “Your such a good boy. Mommy loves you.” She stood up and walked to the automatic door, which opened upon sensing her presence. Iritza looked at her son , into his dark brown eyes. “It’s dinner time. You must be hungry?” she asked with a smile.

The asteroid belt was home to hundreds of rock formations all grouped together and floating around space. This belt followed a path through the galaxy, almost stretching from one end to the other. Some of these asteroids were smaller than an orange while others were the size of football fields. In these space rocks, imbedded deep within, was the alloy metal that EMG was mining. They had sub stations on several large asteroids. These stations were where the brunt of the work was done. Drilling units were used to extract the allow from the asteroid and then they were loaded onto trans-carriers that delivered them to the command station.

Their command station was posted on one of the flagships of the EMG fleet, Gravity One they called her. The ship was the length of three football fields and as wide as two. There were two types of this ship in the EMG fleet. She resembled two submarines connected together in the middle, forming an “H“. She was a slow mover, but made up for it in the technology department. There were hundreds of rooms that were filled with gizmos and gadgets that processed collected data from asteroids. Other rooms had equipment that refined the alloy into popularly used materials and an entire level that was classified and had restricted access. Gravity One was a small city, floating in space and it’s residents were a part of the EMG family.

Iritza had been stationed on Gravity One for four years, all of them as section chief of mining operations. She had given birth to Yajirobe on the ship, in space. Because the ship and company was from Earth, Yajirobe was considered a citizen of Earth. It wasn’t anything to brag about but something he’d always remember as his years passed by.

“Time to head back,” said one of the miners through his com link to the others with him.

He was wearing his overly large space mining suit. It was difficult to move in them, but they were equipped with propulsion jets which made maneuvering in the easier. He signaled to his two fellow companions, each of them in a similar suit. They had spent the last six hours on an asteroid just within site of Gravity One. They had been excavating hyper alloy, a material that had yet to be developed into anything useful. Analysts had determined the material to be stronger than anything ever developed before but had yet to manufacture it into a sellable item. Everything about the alloy was still being researched. There had been only three discoveries of hyper alloy deposits, two by the Space Metal Company and this one that belonged to EMG.

“We’ve got the last load and the carrier is routing back to Gravity One,” replied another miner.

“Good,” said the first. “Lets go home.” he was referring to their quarters on the ship. It had been awhile since they had slept on real beds. He was looking forward to it.

The third miner was packing up the supplies and he held out his hand to give a thumbs up. He was ready to leave as well. They propelled themselves to a larger carrier that could hold four people. Two of the miners had reached the carrier and they waited for the third.

“Come on, wait up.” he called out as he made his way to the carrier.

The three miners secured themselves and the carrier ignited it’s engine and they left their mining station to return back to Gravity One. Their backs were to the work site they left behind. They would return to finish excavating the hyper alloy, but for now, their work was done.

With their backs to the massive collection of asteroids and their sub-station, neither of the miners were aware of an approaching ship. How could they, the ship resembled one of the asteroids. It was of irregular shape and the armor was as course as the rocks that floated around it. You’d only be able to tell that it was no ordinary asteroid by the way it maneuvered around the real asteroids.

“Detection unnoticed,” alerted the computerized voice from the control panel.

Inside the asteroid ship, there was a brightly lit cockpit and manning the craft were two beings. They were not human. No, their skin color and long tails begged otherwise. Though they could speak the universal English language, they communicated with each other in their native tongue.

[For the sake of the story, their words will be translated]

“Slow the approach,” said the commanding alien. “We are within range.” The being flipped several switches and twisted a few dials. Several monitors dropped from the roof of the cockpit and on their screens were the views of the three miners, the sub-station and the large ship known to them as EMG-G-One. Their mission was about to change to phase two.

“Engines have been idled,” replied the other alien, he too was flipping a set of switches. “The readings are positive, hyper alloy.” he said.

The two aliens were pleased that the information provided to them was correct. Hyper alloy had been detected and these humans had found where the deposits were. There must have been hundreds of asteroids with rich deposits of the alloy. The aliens smiled as they went to work on the control panel before them. A large screen popped up and an image of a tall humanoid man filled the monitor. The aliens saluted the figure and proceeded to give him the information.

“Very well,” spoke the man in the video. You can commence your attack at any time,” his face was emotionless. “Gravity One must be destroyed but it must look like an accident.” he ordered with a stern voice. Space Metal Corp will not be held accountable for your screw ups,” he said.

The aliens were irritated with the last remark. They were more superior than this being and if it weren’t for the money being paid, they’d have left right then and their, disregarding the man’s request.

“Survivors?” asked one of the aliens.

“I don’t want to know about it,” he replied before his image disappeared and the screen faded to black.

Iritza had put Yajirobe to bed. He was already asleep, engulfed by the soft material covering the pillows and mattress of his crib. Iritza sang a song, her voice soft and calming. She did this for almost ten minutes before leaving the room to return to her station. She wanted to make sure her miners had returned. She was still concerned about the failing com links.

Several minutes passed before she reached her station. She sat in her high-back chair and faced the keyboard before her. Iritza’s fingers came to life, tapping on the keys as the image on her viewing screen flickered from that of the substation to a view just outside one of the docking bays. Approaching the docking bay was the carrier and the three miners inside. Iritza’s worry began to fade. Not for long though.

“What is that,” she asked herself out loud. She had noticed a small speck in the background of the screen. It appeared to be getting larger. Her eyes widened as she realized it was an asteroid. “A rogue asteroid,” she asked herself. Panic took over and she slammed her hand onto a large red button. You’d expect to see the word PANIC on thing the way she had reacted. Immediately after hitting the button and alarm could be heard through the pa system of the ship.

ALERT! ALERT! READY FOR IMPACT! ALERT! ALERT!

Iritza turned back to the screen as the message repeated itself. She was right, it was an asteroid and it had already covered much distance between the asteroid belt and Gravity One. The miners were just finishing with securing the carrier to it’s docking pad. Iritza tried communicating to them but the damn things weren’t working again.

“Oh for heaven’s sake,” she called out.

The miners were laughing, removing the helmets of their suits as they finished the docking sequence. Upon removal of the helmets, they could hear the alarm. They looked back and saw the asteroid approaching.

“It’s coming right for us,” cried out one of the miners.

The other two men ran for cover. It was a silly thing to do, there was no place to hide. The asteroid was heading for the docking bay, the one they had just entered and secured their carrier in.

The two aliens made their approach. Their ship still resembled an asteroid and that was the affect they were going for. The armor on the ship was impenetrable. It was made from the coveted Hyper Alloy. The aliens were going to mimic a rogue asteroid and collide with the ship, Gravity One. They were hoping to pierce her. “Ready for impact,” called out the alien.

“Firing K-Ion Blasts,” alerted the other alien.

Two small ports on the front of the ship opened up and from within the opening, emerged several balls of energy. They were fired into the docking bay of Gravity One, exploding upon impact and making a path for their ship to follow.

“Blasts fired,” said the alien.

Inside the docking bay, the miners were frantic. The asteroid was approaching with great speed and they noticed a flash of light before being engulfed in flames, their own screams could not be heard.

Iritza watched as the asteroid approached. She saw the miners moving about. They were scared. She was scared. She had noticed a strange light source fire from the asteroid. She thought it weird but her thoughts shattered as the explosion rocked their command ship. The screen flickered and before it went out, she saw the asteroid just before impact. Something about it struck her as strange but she was thrown from her chair by the explosion that resonated throughout the ship.

The aliens braced for impact. The felt the surge of the blasts and explosions of their K-Ion Blasts and then the sound of metal against metal as their ship pierced the innards of Gravity One. It was moments later when the small alien ship emerged from the larger ship. The damage was devastating as the asteroid-looking ship prepared for another collision.

“Fire!” ordered the alien again as he signaled for another blast of their guns. They performed the maneuver three more times before shooting off back into the asteroid belt.

Gravity One was in critical condition. Reports of destruction came in from all sections. People had died. Iritza was hobbling back to her quarters. She had an injured lag and a laceration across her left arm. She was looking for her son.

EMERGENCY STATIONS! EMERGENCY STATIONS!

The alarming voice was high-pitched, malfunctioning from the damage of the impacts. Iritza ignored the alert as she approached the door to her room. It was still in one piece. Inside, Yajirobe was crying. Safely in his crib, he had not been injured. He was woken by the blasts and looked to have been crying for a long time.

Iritza cooed him, trying to calm the child. “It’s alright, mommy is here” she whispered.

The alert repeated itself again.

EMERGENCY STATIONS! EMERGENCY STATIONS!

“I need to get out of here,” she thought as she tried to remember the evac plan. She left the room with her son tightly held against her chest. She could see people running about, hysterical with fear and worry. She wanted to help them, but she had her child to worry about. He was all she had. She rushed to the evac suite and prepped an escape pod for her and her son. She placed her son into the pod and strapped him in. Iritza looked around, she was starting to cry. “I can’t believe this,” she thought as she readied herself.

Panic had filled the entire belly of Gravity One. All crew members were rushing to the evac sites, prepping escape pods and jettisoning themselves into space. They were abandoning ship. Even the captain had been one of the first to cut his ties. Small pods, some with one person, others crammed full shot from Gravity One, they emerged from all directions.

It seemed like everything was trying to get away from the ship but there was one object that appeared to be approaching. It was the alien asteroid ship.

“We can’t allow too many survivors,” smirked one of the aliens as he targeted the ship for another attack. He fired his K-Ion blasts again, this time with full power. The guns fired balls of energy into the hull of Gravity One and she expanded upon impact before bursting into a ball of fire a debris.

Iritza had not expected the explosion.

There is so much that Iritza wanted to accomplish in her life. She wanted to raise her son into a fine young man. Maybe even fall in love again. Who knows, another kid or two. If she had known that her life was going to end today, maybe she would have told her son that she loved him more than once. Maybe she would have prayed for forgiveness of all her sins, though not many, she still would have prayed.

There was no time.

She had secured Yajirobe into the escape pod and entered the coordinates. This could be done from inside the pod, but she didn’t have time. The room began to shake as she pushed the large red button that began the sequence for departure. There was a blast and the escape pod was ejected into space with Yajirobe inside, leaving behind Gravity One and his mother.

In moments, she was engulfed in flames as the explosion filled the room. She barely let our a cry as her body disintegrated. Her final thoughts were of her son and what would become of him and his future.

The alien ship had cleared the blast radius and watched as the EMG flagship exploded. The two aliens inside were quiet and their computers tracked the many escape pods that had been jettisoned. They were sure that they had not been detected. The survivors would explain that the ship was hit by an asteroid and the damage left no evidence to prove otherwise.

The mission was complete. They had delivered a crippling blow to EMG. Their employer will be impressed with what they accomplished. SMC will never be implicated in the destruction of Gravity One and the lives lost. The two aliens entered a new set of coordinates into their computer and the ship blasted it’s engines. They left the scene of the diminishing destruction. They had no remorse as they set the ship into auto-pilot and readied for their trip back to their home planet.

Chapter 2

The stars twinkled through the viewing window of the escape pod. Hundreds of them blended with the night of space and created a magical landscape for young Yajirobe to take in. He was on a course to an unknown destination, the coordinates were entered by his mother who was no longer apart of this world. Behind the craft, debris from the wreckage faded to nothing. He was alone.

Ahead of the small craft, off in the distance, a planet came into view. In the darkness of space, the planet was like a beacon calling to wayward space travelers. The computer guided the escape craft towards the planet. The boy inside was restless. He missed his mother and as the planet filled the viewing window, he stopped to gaze at the massive shape.

The craft entered the atmosphere, the planet’s gravity pulling it into it’s clutches. Yajirobe began to cry as the craft shook violently from the turbulence. A thick panel spanned across the window to shield from the flames that engulfed the craft as it made it’s decent onto the planet.

Within minutes, the escape craft became very still. It was still falling to the surface, but the turbulence had subsided. There were hissing sounds as small jets fired to slow the craft as it approached the ground. A large bang sounded, scaring the boy inside as a set of parachutes were released from the rear of the craft. With a thud the craft hit the ground, Everything went silent except for Yajirobe’s cries.

Moments later, there was a clanking on the shell of the escape craft. It alerted Yajirobe and all the boy could here was a muffled voice through the thick metal skin that protected him. There was more clanking and then a hissing noise. The seal of the craft was being broken as fresh air began to seep into where Yajirobe was secured. He watched as a set of hands reached in and pried the craft open. Yajirobe’s eyes closed shut as the bright sunlight filled the darkness almost blinding him. He cried some more. The hands grabbed the boy and pulled him from the craft into the new world that awaited.

“Now there, lil’ thing,” said a calming voice. “Where did you drop from?”

Yajirobe eased up on the waterworks as he opened his eyes to see the source of the voice. The sunlight was still bright, washing out the figure but as his eyes adjusted, he started to make out the figure that held him.

“There you go,” said the man. “That’s better.”

The man resembled Yajirobe’s father. It must have been what helped to calm the boy down. It couldn’t have been his father because he had passed away, but what did a three year old care.

The man was Avalonian, he had long white hair that almost touched the ground. He was clad in jeweled armor that suggested he was a high ranking officer. His face was tan, wrinkled from many years in the elements. His voice was calm despite his dominating presence.

Behind the Avalonian warrior were a contingent of his finest men. They were members of the Avalonian guard, practically royalty and they had been on patrol following a beacon that pinpointed the craft’s whereabouts. They had followed their commander to investigate the ship that had entered their airspace. They did not expect to come across this boy.

“Commander Dragus,” called one of the soldiers who rushed up and knelt down onto the ground. He awaited permission to speak.

“Go ahead,” responded Dragus. He was holding the child close to his chest as another group of soldiers arrived to dismantle the ship to transport to their base of operations.

“I believe this child is a survivor of the Human ship, Gravity One.” said the man who got up from off his knees. “It was a mining ship in the Belt,” he finished.

Dragus was aware of the companies that frequented their part of the galaxy to mine and trade and colonize. He wasn’t a fan of the expansion of the humans but curbed his tongue for fear of reprimand from his superiors.

“I am aware of the situation,” he answered as he began to walk back to his contingent. “We leave in three minutes.”

“Yes sir!” the man saluted.

Dragus Huntarion was a proud Avalonian, serving as a highly ranked commander of the largest contingent in the Avalonian Guard, he knew everything that occurred in the realm that was the Avalonian Protectorate. He had served the council for as long as he could remember. He clutched the boy in his arms as he mounted his stead, a variation of the horses found on Earth but much larger.

“We leave,” he commanded and the entire force of Avalonians fell behind him, kicking up a blanket of dust as they trampled the ground and headed back to base.

Yajirobe hadn’t cried since being pulled from the escape craft. The comfort in being in someone’s care had brought a sense of ease to the boy and he practically fell asleep on the ride.

Dragus had a wife and one child. His wife tended to their home as was customary of Avalonian women. Their son was seven, strong a smart. He was the image of his mother but possessed the charisma of his father. Everyone liked him and feared him. Dragus knew that his son would become an amazing leader in the army. They had planned to have more children but time got the best of them and they gave up on that dream.

“We must send the boy back,” said the cranky voice of a high elder. He was pointing to Yajirobe who was cradled on a pedestal before the group of elders.

Dragus stood beside the boy, his back erect and his crisp hair, straight and motionless. He awaited further comments of the high elder before him.

“This boy fell into our hands,” chimed another elder.

Dragus kept quiet, his body as still as the building they were inside, unmovable.

“This boy needs care, needs a home,” said the second elder. “So he is human. Let us Avalonians raise him, train him.” There was a pause. “Imagine having this young boy as our ambassador to Earth on behalf of our great planet and it’s civilization.”

The remaining elders pondered the idea, muttering to one another. Minutes passed and still they had not reached a decision on the fate of Yajirobe.

“If I may,” spoke Dragus for the first time since being summoned by the elders. “My wife and I will look after the boy,” he said with a firm tone. “I will raise him, ready him for the trials and then we’ll see.”

The elders were surprised that Dragus would volunteer. They turned to each other and another round of debating began.

Dragus remained still, his mind replaying what he just said. He knew the elders would agree to him caring for the boy. He knew that his wife would be ecstatic to have another child. It was what they had wanted so long ago. Here was his opportunity for a new meaning in life. This boy was to be his newly adopted son.

“Here we go,” he thought.

Avalon was a mountainous planet that, despite the rough sculpture of her surface, appeared as a majestic portrait of tranquil beauty that warranted admiration. Across the sky, wisps of clouds raced towards the horizon. The wind was strong as it glided down the face of the mountain that shadowed the large estate at it’s base.

It was midday, the grassy fields that surrounded the estate shone bright as rays of sunlight beamed across the sea of green. Trees dotted the field, providing a quiet place to rest up and contemplate. Two boys ran across the field, they appeared to be racing one another. They’d rush from one tree to the next and do it over again.

“Come’on Lizarno,” called out the younger boy. He was out of breath, trying to keep up with his older brother. “Let me win one,” he pleaded as they set themselves up for another race.

Lizarno was sixteen and his build was muscular. His hair was silver, contrasting against his tanned skin and it was pulled back into a tail that swayed against his back. “Oh, Yaji,” he taunted. “Can’t you see that only if you beat me to the next tree,” he stopped to point at their make-believe finish line. “That if you reach it before I do, then you can call yourself a winner?” He stared at his younger brother and smiled. “Ready?”

Yaji was twelve and though he was strong, his stockier body hid the muscles that powered each movement. His skin was also tanned by the sun and because he was human, his hair was not the traditional white like his Avalonian brother. The black strands of hair were darker than coal and tied into a tail that laid flat against his back.

“On your mark,” shouted Yaji.

Lizarno lurched forward. “GO!”

The two boys exploded from their starting spots, speeding forward towards the tree. They cut across the field, Lizarno was already leading. Yaji was fast, but his shorter legs meant that he had to work twice as hard to keep up with his brother. Lizarno looked back, smiling.

“Not this time,” he smirked as he reached the tree before Yaji did.

“I was close,” responded the younger brother.

“Maybe next time,” answered Lizarno, “We’ll keep practicing.”

Across the fields, the sound of a woman’s voice called to the boys. It was their mother’s. Her heavenly voice soothed every ailment and her beauty was unrivaled. Though she had aged over the years, her skin was smooth as glass and her muscularly toned body could handle itself. She called to the boys again, letting them know that it was time to come home. Their father would be arriving soon.

Lizarno and Yaji raced once more, this time to the mansion that they called home. It stood three stories high and it’s dark stone exterior exuberated a strong masculine feel to those visiting. The boys had made this place their palace. They knew every nook and cranny and played endlessly throughout the day. The boys reached the house, Lizarno won of course. They skipped up the stone steps and hugged their mother upon entering the home.

Adaline was a lucky woman. She had two healthy fine young boys. One that was her and Dragus’ biological son and the other, they had adopted merely nine years ago. Regardless of the facts, they were family and she loved them both. Adaline instructed them to wash up for supper and went back to finishing the meal.

Dragus would arrive home and they would, as one, enjoy supper and spend the evening together. Everyday was like this. The boys were in private schooling. They would come home from their teachings and play endlessly on the land. Their mother would watch from the house and when their father came home, they would spend the rest of the evening together. It was perfect.

Years past and soon Lizarno was turning twenty one. It was time for him to take the next step in his life. He was to enter into the Avalonian Guard. It was a dream come true. More for his father than himself, but he was honored to have the opportunity to protect and serve his home planet. His mother was proud too, though she would miss him while away.

Yajirobe was turning nineteen. He was too young to enter the guard and he was human. The elders frowned upon non-Avalonians serving in their army.

Yajirobe had discovered that he was not Avalonian a few years earlier. His father, Dragus had told him the story of how he came to be on the planet and how he was human and that his home planet was protected by them. Yajirobe took it all in and though he had no feelings about the matter, his curiosity had gotten the better of him. He asked many questions about space, other planets, the humans and it all interested him. Dragus could see the sparkle in his son’s eyes when he explained it all to him. Both Dragus and Yajirobe knew that the boys time on Avalon was limited. Dragus would have to cut the cord and let the boy discover on his own, that missing something. The only problem would be telling his mother, Adaline.

For the most part it went over well. Adaline was emotional but she understood. After all, she could not keep her boys under her wings their entire life. She knew that they would be reunited in the future. Adaline left it to Dragus to see Yajirobe off.

“Well son,” said his father. “Your older brother will be joining the army and though I know you could have made a fine soldier, it’s best if you embark on a journey to find yourself.” Dragus paused, thinking of his own journey so long ago. “You will be nineteen and already you’ve grown into a fine young man.”

“But father,” questioned Yajirobe. “Though I want to explore the galaxies, I don’t want to leave you and mother.” He was beginning to show emotion.

“Yajirobe, my son.” Dragus comforted. Promise me you’ll return, come back to us here on Avalon. Mother will miss you, I will miss you and you know you this will always be your home.”

Yajirobe hugged his father. They held each other tightly and upon letting go, Dragus smiled at Yajirobe. “You’ll make me proud. I know it” he said and turned to walk away.

Yajirobe was left theft there, watching his father leave. Behind Yajirobe was the galactic transit station. He was to board the next shuttle, it’s destination; Earth. Dragus had purchased a ticket for the young man. Adaline and Dragus had agreed that it was best for Yajirobe to visit the planet. There was much for him to learn. Without further hesitation, Yajirobe grabbed his bag and got in line to board the shuttle. He looked back at the mountains that provided a scenic backdrop for the capitol of Avalon. He will miss this place.

“ALL ABOARD!” yelled the boarding clerk.

The galactic Transit System was a public space transportation system. It provided travel throughout space to planets that were advanced enough to support the program. The beings you found traveling from point A to point B were diverse in everyway. No voyage was the same.

Yajirobe was overwhelmed by the hundreds of beings that packed into the shuttle. There were people standing, aliens sitting and everything else in between. Yajirobe found an empty seat next to the window. He wanted to watch the departure. He kept quiet and to himself.

The shuttle lifted off the ground, it’s powerful thrusters pushing it into space. The city below dwindled as Yajirobe watched his home disappear. The shuttle was schedule to make two stops before it’s final destination. Earth was the second stop. This is where Yajirobe would get off. He expected the travel to be about two weeks. Yajirobe wasn’t sure if he could remain confined in this metal prison in the emptiness of space.

“Where you headed man?” grunted a young man next to Yajirobe.

Yajirobe looked at the guy and ignored him.

The man’s face was hairy. He hadn’t shaved for a couple of weeks and all you could see were his dark eyes and the whites of his teeth when he spoke. He repeated himself. “Hey, I said where you headed?”

Yajirobe had to respond. He didn’t want to keep getting interrupted. Yajirobe was trying to take in the scenery. He had never in outer space. Not that he could remember.

“Earth,” he responded. “I think it is the second stop.”

The man nodded. “Name’s Targos,” he said, sticking his fist out.

Yajirobe butted his fist against the man. “My name is Yajirobe.”

The man laughed, “That’s a mouthful. I’m gonna call you Guy.”

Yajirobe shook his head, “If you are going to call me anything, then Yaj will be fine.”

Targos nodded again. “Yaj it is”

The Galactic Transit Shuttle or GTS spent seven days in space. It traveled from Avalon to it’s first stop. It was to dock for three days before heading off to Earth. Targos and Yaj befriended one another on the trip. They seemed to have a lot in common. They both wanted to be adventurers. Targos, also a human, had wandered away from his home planet and here they were.

“So Taj,” Targos asked while munching on a snack. Bits of food fell into his beard. He didn’t notice and kept talking between bites. “Meant to ask earlier. Why your hair so damn long? It’s like a girls.” Targos took another bite.

Yajirobe had almost forgotten about his longer hair. It was something he had grown up with, customary with Avalonians. He would’ve explained but didn’t want to get all emotional thinking about his family. “It was a phase and I’ve been meaning to cut it,” he answered.

Targos laughed, finishing his food. “Well, we should be making our first stop soon.” Targos looked at his digital watch that was strapped to his wrist. The leather band was faded, it looked old. “Will you be getting off to take a look see?”

“I might,” replied Yajirobe. He was getting cramped in the shuttle. He had been confined for too long and could use a stretch of the legs. “Yeah, I think I will,” he chuckled.

“That’s what I am talking about man,” laughed Targos as he grabbed another plate of food from the passing cart. “Eat up!”

The shuttle’s first stop was a floating city in the middle of space. It was a trading post, a home to many and a destination for many more. It was known as Galactic Haven. It was the size of a small moon, home to three million. That was nothing compared to the billions that passed through each week. Galactic Haven floated in the Avalon Protectorate realm, but it was a neutral zone. It had no affiliations with any government or racial entity. The entire city was managed by androids. They answered to no one.

The GTS made her approach, slowly connecting with the docking arm that retracted once it grabbed onto the shuttle. There was a loud clank and a hiss of noise as the passage doorway connected to the shuttle hatch. The air pressurized and the hatch opened. For those that Galactic Haven was their last stop, a stewardess let them off first. Shortly following, she let the rest of the passengers go.

“Remember that we depart for Earth in seventy-two hours,” she yelled. “Miss this flight and your stuck here for weeks.”

Yajirobe and Targos got up, they had no belongings except a backpack for each. They followed the crowd through the doorway and into the receiving area of the docking station on Galactic Haven. Yajirobe was overwhelmed with the amount of people that filled the area. There were so many different beings of shapes, colors and smells.

“Come on man,” yelled targos who had found the exit and was waving Yaj to follow.

“Wait up,” Yaj yelled back.

The two young men left the building and entered the street. If Yajirobe thought the cities of Avalon were busy, he was mistaken. Galactice Haven, already had proven to be the busiest, noisiest place he had ever visited. Upon entering the street, Yajirobe’s eyes were wildly adjusting to the rows of road cars and hover cars that dotted the street and airspace within the station. He looked at Targos in disbelief.

“Pretty rad, huh?” asked Targos as he waved down a cab.

Yajirobe just shook his head and hopped into the cab with Targos.

“Take us to the nearest bar,” shouted Targos to the alien behind the wheel. The alien spoke in a language that neither of the men understood. A metallic voice from an overhead speaker translated. Yajirobe handed the alien some money and the car sped off.

The Rusted Can was the closest bar and the alien cab dropped Yajirobe and Targos off at the entrance before speeding off to cut into the streaming traffic. The street was crowded and smelled of old meat. The exhaust from the passing cars filled the air with toxins and made it uncomfortable to breath. It didn’t seem to bother Targos.

“Let’s go,” said Targos as he opened the door and went inside.

“Yajirobe studied the sign of the bar, Rusted Can. “What kind of name that?” he thought as he entered the building.

Inside the Can, the lights were dim. Their eyes took a while to adjust to the darkness compared to the plethora of lights outside. They found a free table and ordered a couple of drinks, Targos ordered two for himself. There was no age requirement to drink on Galactic Haven, so Yajirobe ordered one for himself too.

While in the bar, Yajirobe studied the other beings inside. They seemed boisterous and rude. It was hard for him to concentrate on the conversation with Targos. If he remembered, Targos was saying something about dragon balls and how your wildest dreams would come true if you collected all of them.

“Whatever man,” laughed Yajirobe as he finished his third glass.

There were four empty glasses in front of Targos as he downed a fifth. “It’s true man. I swear.”

Yajirobe laughed at the wild claim of magical balls that granted the finder any wish. The two young men continued to talk, ignoring the rest of the ruffians in the bar.

In a dark corner, there was a group of aliens. They had been watching Yajirobe and Targos since they entered the bar. The aliens could tell that they were human. Young and naïve, the humans looked. The aliens would continue to watch, waiting for the right moment to jump them and steal their belongings.

Hours passed and while the bar remained busy, Yajirobe and Targos were growing tired. They needed a place to rest up. They could have gone back to the shuttle. It would have been free to sleep in the uncomfortable chairs with only a small pillow to prop your head on or they could check into a local hotel and sleep on real beds.

“What’s the damage?” asked Targos. The waitress presented him with a bill. “I got it Yaj,” he said, pulling out a wad of cash and handing a portion of it to the waitress. “Keep the change darling.”

“Thanks, I’ll get the next round.” replied Yajrobe.

They both got up and left the bar, their steps were a little wobbly but they managed to stay on their feet. In the corner, the group of aliens also got up, leaving their half-emptied drinks on the table and followed the two onto the streets.

“So where are we stayin,” asked Targos as he burped.

“That place looks good enough,” pointed Yajirobe.

There was a small motel down an alleyway. It had a sign that read “rooms available” It rested under the glow of a yellow neon sign that advertised the Galactic Princess Pageant. They both smiled as images of beautiful women flashed by on the sign and they agreed that this would be a good place for the night. Yajirobe and Targos headed down the alley towards the motel.

The aliens followed the two into the alleyway. They smiled at one another as they thought this was going to be too easy. There were three aliens, each of them were muscular but their build was hidden beneath baggy shirts and pants. They each wore red bandanas and their faces looked mean. Not many people bothered this crowd. Mostly they did the bothering.

For most brawlers and thieves, the art of fighting was a joke. They main concern was busting heads as quickly as possible with as little fuss and getting away with whatever loot they snatched. These aliens were no different. They didn’t sneak up on the two humans, instead they made their presence known.

“Hey you.” shouted one of the aliens. “I think you have my money.”

The other two aliens continued to close the gap between them and the young men, Yajirobe and Targos.

Targos stopped, looking back at the alien who taunted them. Yajirobe also stopped. He placed his bag onto the ground reluctantly as the ground was pretty dirty. Targos cocked an eyebrow.

“Don’t think so bud,” replied Targos. “You got the wrong guy.”

The aliens approached the two, they were now standing within arms length of each other. “No I am not mistaken. I saw you take out my wad of cash in the bar awhile back,” repeated the alien. He was rolling up his sleeves to reveal massive forearms. The other two aliens circled around the young men, they too were clenching their fists.

Yajirobe had been trained to fight by his father, Dragus. He was skilled but had also been instructed to not use it except in defense. Yajriobe felt that the time to put his skills to use would be soon. He kept an eye on the alien that circled around and was coming up on his back.

The other alien was coming up on Targos’ back and the one that did the talking remained in front of them.

“Hand it over and we won’t hurt you,” ordered the alien. The other two aliens began to laugh.

Targos smirked. “Try to hurt us and maybe we’ll think about it,” he said with a cocky attitude.

Yajirobe knew that the moment was coming and it did within seconds.

The attack came quickly. The alien behind Yajirobe snapped out his fist and jabbed at the back of the human’s head. He followed it with a knee to Yajirobe’s back. The other two aliens jumped Targos, both of them throwing punches at the cocky human.

Yajirobe had anticipated the attack and dodged the punch but was caught in the small of his back by the alien’s knee. He fell forward, collapsing onto his knees from the blow. Yajirobe reached back and pulled the alien’s foot from under him, causing the alien to fall.

Targos was caught by the two aliens and their barrage of punches. Most of them connected which only enraged Targos as he wrapped his arm around one of them and began to pound his fist into the aliens side while the other one continued to assault Targos’ back.

Yajirobe saw what Targos was dealing with and rushed over and rammed into the alien that was punching Targos. The swift blow knocked the wind from the alien and he fell to the ground with a thud. Yajirobe had fallen onto him and upon landing, the two began to wrestle on the filthy alleyway street.

Targos had an alien in his grasp, he was going nowhere. Targos practically drilled a hole into the alien’s side with repetitive punches. The alien collapsed to the ground, groaning as he grabbed as his wounded torso.

The alien that Yajriobe had tripped was on his feet and rushing to Targos. He threw a punch, followed by a reverse punch and then an uppercut. Targos dodged the first and was clipped by the second which provided enough of a distraction for the third to connect with the underside of Targos’ chin. The blow lifted the human off his feet and onto his back. The alien laughed as he raised his leg to stomp onto the fallen human.

Yajirobe had broken free from the alien that he was wrestling with. The alien was moaning, his arm broken. Yajirobe rushed to his friends rescue, his anger and determination ignited a hidden energy inside. His fists glowed with an aura that pulsated with each beat of his heart. Yajirobe was unaware of his actions, he was like a different person. He threw his hand out, the glowing aura focused into a ball of energy and shot forward towards the alien. The energy blast connected with the alien’s chest, exploding on contact.

Targos below, could smell burning flesh as bits of clothing and burnt alien fell onto him. As the smoke cleared, the alien stood there stunned. He was alive, barely and he didn’t know what to do. Targos grabbed the alien’s foot as Yajirobe delivered a right hook which knocked the alien unconscious. Targos immediately go to his feet.

There were two aliens left, one with a broken arm and the other was still on the ground holding his wounded side. Yajirobe’s hands began to glow again and the aliens mustered their remaining strength to round up their unconscious friend and took off like scared puppies.

“Well, that went better than I thought,” huffed Targos, his face was bruised. “What the hell was that move with the bomb thingy?” he asked.

Yajirobe was breathing heavily, mostly because of the exhilaration from the fight but he just shook his head. “I’m not sure. It just happened and I don’t know how,” he replied.

The two men gathered their bags and called it a night as they entered the motel and got a room. They decided to stay away from the bars while they were on Galactic Haven. Things would be easier from this point on.

The week went by fast and it was now time for the GTS to depart from the space city known as Galactic Haven. The hundreds of people that boarded the shuttle were filtered through the check-in stations. They had to show their boarding pass to get on. Two young men were in line, their boarding passes in hand. The clerk checked their passes and let them board. The shuttle quickly prepped for departure upon boarding the last passenger.

Targos and Yajirobe strapped in just in time as the shuttle rocked. The GTS unhooked from the docking bay and floated away from the city before igniting it’s engines and blasting off towards Earth.

“Good day everyone,” announced a stewardess. “We have departed for Earth and should arrive within the week.”

Yajirobe moaned as he prepped for the long boring ride. He pulled out a small pillow and rested his head onto the thin material that filled the wool fabric. He closed his eyes and soon his dreams began to take over. He first dreamt of his mother and father back on Avalon. He missed them dearly. Yajirobe wondered how his brother, Lizarno was doing. Yajirobe had faith that his brother was doing fine. Then Yajirobe dreamt of the mysterious force that he unleashed onto the bullying aliens back at Galactic Haven. It perplexed his mind and hopefully he would find the answers on earth.

The ride to earth seemed quicker than the first leg of the journey. Four days had passed and the two young men were in the middle of a conversation. There was a crowd around them, everyone was throwing out their opinion on the matter being discussed. Targos was talking about the dragon balls again and Yajirobe was denying they existed. Most of the onlookers agreed with Targos that they had heard of the magical items while the rest laughed and ridiculed the claim.

“Whatever man,” laughed Yajirobe as he turned back in his seat to catch some more rest.

“Trust me bro, they are real.” said Targos. “When we get to earth, I’ll show you. We’ll find one”

“Fine,” said Yajirobe. “Until then, let’s not talk about it.” Yajirobe closed his eyes and found comfort in his dreams again.

Targos shrugged his shoulders and went back to talking about the dragon balls with the passengers aboard the shuttle.

“Hey, wake up Yaji,” said Targos as he nudged his friend. “Look out the window. Earth”

Yajirobe was asleep, kind of. His eyes lazily opened as Targos poked at him with his fist. His mouth was dry and he yawned as he looked out the viewing window of the shuttle. In the darkness of space there was a giant blue and green planet. It was speckled with white. “Earth,” thought Yajirobe as he finally woke up.

The planet was similar to that of Avalon, except that there was more water covering the surface. The shuttle made it’s approach. The passengers were growing antsy as they grabbed their belongings and prepared for entry into the earth’s atmosphere.

The shuttle exploded through the ceiling of clouds that blocked most of the sunlight that warmed the planet. The turbulence was almost nonexistent as the shuttle adjusted flight and headed off towards the city where it was supposed to dock.

“We’re here,” shouted Targos. He stared out the window at the land that passed by. He was excited to be home.

Yajirobe was curious as to how the planet and the humans on it would be compared to Avalon. He wasn’t as excited as his friend, but he also missed his family which got in the way of any excitement of being here.

‘So where you headed when we land?” asked Yajirobe.

Targos settled in his seat. He looked at Yajirobe with a blank stare. “I’m not sure,” he replied. He really didn’t know what to do now that he was here.

“Don’t worry,” said Yajirobe. “You can join me. I found a flyer back at Galactic Haven for a martial arts trainer here.” Yajirobe pulled out a flyer from his shirt. It was damp and wrinkled but the information was legible. “See?” he asked.

Targos took the flyer and read it. “Interesting,” he said as he handed it back. “I think I’ll pass,” he said to Yajirobe’s and his own amazement. “Talking about the dragon balls have gotten me all excited that I think I’ll look them up.” Targos looked back out the window. “There has got to be some truth to it right?”

Yajirobe shrugged. “Go for it man,” he said, encouraging his friend to go after his dream. “We’ll meet up some time and when we do, let’s test our skills against each other.” Yajirobe smiled.

Targos turned back to his friend, his face lit with a smile too. “That sounds good,” he said.

Minutes later, the shuttle halted with a clank and everyone rocked back and forth. The shuttle had stopped. It was docked and the doors were being opened. Everyone in the shuttle got off, including Yajirobe and Targos. The headed through the building with their few belongings. The terminal was busy with people, most of them human. Both Targos and Yajirobe blended in with the crowd as the said their goodbyes to one another and parted ways.
