The sun beat down hard on the desert sands. The excavation crews working on recovering artifacts from the destroyed pyramids were taking their lunch breaks. As usual they were all crowded into the largest tent on the grounds, the tent of their leader and friend, Enzeru. The woman had been working hard on the books all morning. It seemed that the numbers were beginning to run together. She welcomed the chance to chat with her comrades and learn what had been happening outside the tent that morning. It didn’t surprise her that there was nothing new to report. Enzeru sat back in her chair behind her desk and munched on a bag of potato chips while she watched the men around her enjoying their break in the cool shade. These were the best of times for her. Lisa, Enzeru’s best friend and stand in while she was away, had been in her own tent doing who knows what. So it was certainly a surprise when the tall blond ran in holding a phone stretched out at arm’s length. Without a work she pushed it at Enzeru. Their eyes met and urgency was exchanged. “Hello, this is Enzeru,” She began and was interrupted by the least likely of people. “Hey sweetie, can you do an old man a favor?” Master Roshi’s voice asked quickly. “Depends on the favor,” Enzeru returned quickly, suspecting this to be another pervy man move. “I just learned a friend of mine who lives near you has been without food or water for several days. I need you to take some to her. I hate to ask a pretty lady to go on such a dangerous mission but I think you’re strong enough to handle it.” “Why is it so dangerous?” “Those stupid gangs are at war again, apparently. You should know, they’re your neighbors. To get there you just travel north west of your camp.” “Probably a war over water rights then. I’ll take supplies to your friend, don’t you worry. I’ll also be over for training same time as last week. Take care old man.” “You too young lady.” Enzeru hung up the phone and stood up quickly. “I’ll be back later guys, I nee to run an errand for my master. Hold things together while I’m gone.” The men gave Enzeru various looks of curiosity and worry. Before she could say a word to Lisa the blond spoke, “I’ll keep it all together. You just go.” Enzeru clapped a hand on her friend’s shoulder and nodded. With a last wave to everyone she grabbed her travel gear as well as food and water to last a couple weeks. She left the tent quickly and began walking. (Word Count: 452) |

Meanwhile in the remains of the town the survivors were left to face the gangs. A particular nasty sort by the name of Perno was currently in control. He stood taller than the former citizens of the town. His purple mohawk and spiked leather jacket made him look kinda goofy but he was so menacing no one would dare tell him that. Perno had ordered his gangsters to line up the surviving citizens that they could find. Most of them were women and children. “Alright now you sorry lot. Whoever is male and old enough is gonna join my gang. Whoever is not old enough will be sent out into the desert until yeh get old enough. As for the women,” He grinned, showing his yellow teeth and stroking his chin. He turned to face his men, “You lot settle these sorry losers into their new quarters. If they try and escape kill em. I want first pick of the women, don’t you dare touch em until I do.” There was a resounding chorus of ‘yes boss’ and then men divided up to handle the different groups. Two of them men began glaring menacingly at the children. The small bodies trembled in fright. They took off running as fast as they could, scrambling in different directions, hoping to find safety in their burned out and shot up homes. Three of the men had decided to turn to the men. They began shouting and yelling orders, which the frightened citizens quickly obeyed. Most of the men were young, in their teens, or old well into their lives. Likely the elderly would not survive this and many of the youth would be killed in the next gang battle. The last three men left began rounding up the frightened women, most of whom just fell to the ground crying or tried to run. There were a couple of tough ladies who tried to fight back and quickly had the fight beaten out of them. These people needed a hero and they needed one fast. (Word Count: 341) |

Enzeru hummed a random tune she had heard while watching television. As she often did, she had just been listening to it and wasn’t sure what show it was from. Her pack was a little larger and heavier than usual. Normally she kept everything in capsules but since this was urgent she didn’t have time for that. The food and water she was bringing for the friend Master Roshi spoke of was mostly barely packed. As she continued on the form of a town could be seen in the distance. Maybe this would be a nice place to rest if it isn’t over run by bandits or gangsters. She thought to herself and began walking a little faster. At this rate she would be there in no time. Sure she could fly but she would not reap the benefits she would from this exercise that she did walking. Enzeru got closer to the town and noticed that the buildings did not look to be in good shape. Her hopes of a rest were quickly shot down, much as these buildings looks. Enzeru slowed down her walk and looked around. “What happened here?” She wondered out loud. Enzeru slowly made her way to the center of town, occasionally passing a body that she would check in hopes of finding a survivor who could shed some light on things. When she reached the center of town she found it littered with graffiti and blood. There had been a great battle in this little town. “You seem to be lost,” A voice spoke from behind her, “Let me help yah find your way.” Enzeru wheeled around and found herself face to face with a tall brutish looking man with a purple mohawk. “No, I’m just wondering what happened here. Care to enlighten me?” The man grinned, his yellow teeth showing. “Well, love, we happened here. Those bastards resisted us and we took control. We are now, thanks to this town the more powerful gang in the region.” The half-sayian raised an eyebrow and laughed a little, “You think gangs and death bring power?” She began, “Discipline and hard work bring power.” “How would you know, you’re just a woman?” The man laughed loudly, bringing the attention of his comrades who came out of various doorways and windows. “Excuse me?” Enzeru clinched her fist and then released it, trying to calm her rage. “You’re just a woman. Tell yeh way though, if yeh come with me I’ll let yeh be my own private house woman. Yeh can cook for me, clean for me, and maybe if you’re good yeh can get a special reward.” (Word Count: 440) |

The man advanced on Enzeru quickly. She jumped up and used her ki to fly. This caused many people to gasp, point, and chatter. However, the gangster boss was just angry. “Come here yeh little birdie,” He growled and tried to grab her leg. Enzeru wasn’t quite fast enough of a flier. The gangster grabbed her by her ankle and slammed her into a wall, causing it to crack. He dropped Enzeru, expecting her to be badly hurt. “Will yeh submit to me now?” The gangster asked amidst the cheers of his men. Enzeru stood up and dusted herself off. “You’re a right violent individual aren’t you?” She asked and prepared to fight. “Oh, you’re a toughie, I like that,” The gangster ran at Enzeru. For a split second Enzeru was reminded of a bear on its hind legs, sure it was big but it was clumsy. She used his momentum against him by simply letting him run into her fist with his gut. The gangster coughed and sputtered while Enzeru waited for him to catch his breath, “If yeh don’t submit I’ll have em shoot yeh,” He managed to get out once he had regained his composure. “I know how these things work and so do they. Give up and leave this town and its people before I loose my temper,” Enzeru replied, trying to remain as civil as possible although she was dealing with a brutish thug. She dropped her pack, hoping nothing had been broken. “You think you can beat me and take over my gang? I don’t think so.” The gangster caught her off guard with a punch to the gut. Enzeru gasped as the large fist hit her. She wasn’t too badly hurt, but she was shocked; so shocked the gangster got another hit or two in before she blocked it. (Word Count: 306) |

Enzeru smirked as a bit of blood trickled down from her lip to her chin. “I have had enough of this. It’s time to end it.” She stood as straight as she could. This guy certainly had a weaker power level than she did. He also seemed to be looking over confident, still. Enzeru removed her wrist weights. They tumbled to the ground and slightly cracked the pavement. She rubbed her wrists. “When ever you are ready you can come at me again. I’ve had enough playing around for one day.” Enzeru waited, she took no battle stance. The gangster was red with anger. How could this woman survive all that she had to be some kind of monster or an alien to do it. “Yeh can consider yourself dead,” The gangster barked. “I’ll not loose to someone with a phony accent,” Enzeru laughed and then flew quickly at the gangster. She sent a blast punch into his gut, being careful not to kill him, just knock him out. The gangster gasped and fell to the ground. The noise the crowd had been making all the time subsided. Apparently they had a new leader, a woman leader. Enzeru turned and addressed them all, “My first order of business and is release our hold over the town and the people who live here. My second will be to disband this gang and order you all to lead normal successful lives. Go get a real job, make something of yourselves.” Everyone stood silent for a moment. Enzeru raised an eyebrow, “Did I stutter? Move it!” She barked. This gained her the response she was looking for. People skittered here and there releasing hostages, freeing slaves, and opening up the locked doors and boxes that held what treasures and food stuffs they ‘found’ here. Enzeru was please as she watched this unfold quickly. It was like watching the end of a movie on fast forward. (Word Count: 322) |

Enzeru watched the progress with a pleased smile on her face. The former gang leader began to stir. It would not do for him to be roaming free until she turned him in to whatever authorities were left here. Enzeru took some rope out of her pack and tied him up. Two citizens approached her cautiously. It was normal for them to be afraid; she just whooped their suppressor senseless. “It’s alright, I won’t hurt you,” Enzeru smiled kindly on these people. They had clearly been through a lot of mental and physical trauma. “Miss, pardon my intrusion, but I want to request your help,” A tall man asked her. “What do you need, good sir?” “My son was sent into the desert with the other children, do you think maybe, possibly, if you have time you can return him to us?” The man cringed as if he was expecting to be hit. Enzeru smiled and nodded, “As soon as you are settled here I shall be on my way. Which way did he go?” The man’s face lit up. “The other side of town, in the direction of the old hermit lady’s home.” He pointed in the opposite direction he came from. Enzeru grinned, “I was going to visit her anyway. My master is friend with her and he was actually the one who told me what was going down here.” “He must be a great man to train a warrior as strong as you,” The man replied. “Just trying to help out where I can.” Enzeru blushed at the flattery. As soon as all the people were freed and the former gang leader caged properly Enzeru said goodbye to the town’s people. She would not be able to help with the rebuilding because she would have to take more time away from work and training than she could spare. She began her walk to the home of the old lady in hopes of also finding the children. (Word Count: 329) |

Enzeru approached what look like a dried up oasis with a small house beside it. This surely was the place; there were no other houses in this area. She approached carefully, after all the bandit trouble whoever lived her would be on guard. She knocked on the door, “Hello, Master Roshi sent me to deliver water and food, is anyone home?” She called out. “No need to be so loud young lady, I may be old but I hear better than most people your age,” And older woman’s voice replied from around the side of the house. Enzeru walked around the side of the house. A young girl clung to the old woman’s skirts and several other children huddled behind her. “So the children came to you,” Enzeru smiled and took her pack off her back. “I got enough water and food for everyone. Oh, and the gangsters have been run out of town so you don’t have to be afraid anymore.” She removed some bottles of water from her pack and passed them out to the children. “Bless you, young woman. However did you get rid of the bandits?” “I defeated their leader, took over, and disbanded them,” Enzeru shrugged, “Nothing really all that grand about that.” “Oh, yes, but there is. You freed an entire town of people from slavery and made it possible for me to buy my supplies again.” “I have supplies here to last you a couple of weeks. That should be good enough until the town gets more shipments of goods in.” “Thank you; I shall see the children home in a couple hours.” “And you might be able to set up a water pump over on the oasis. It would certainly help keep you from running out of water again.” “I will get some of the men from the town to help me, thanks again and tell Roshi I said hello and he should visit some time.” “I will, good bye mam,” Enzeru waved good bye to the old woman and the town’s children. They all seemed in such high spirits. Enzeru returned to her excavation camp. Word had already got out about her saving the town. She was welcomes as not only a friend but a hero. (Word Count: 375) |
