Enzeru landed gracefully on Roshi’s island. He often called her here to go on errands for him while she was not training or working. Usually it was to pick up a certain publication or a strange unmarked package. She was prepared for whatever she needed to do, despite the fact she was not an errand girl. The island was quiet, serene, and beautiful. The old man had plenty of students to keep it up for him apparently. After all, she was never asked to do any yard work or housework for that matter. He saw her for what she was, a warrior. Well, after she put down his advances rather violently the first and only time he tried anything. It was the old master who first suggested her father might not be from an earthly origin but rather one far away on another world. He was speaking, of course, of sayians. He told her that they were a warrior race content to fight and feast and drink. This reminded Enzeru of the Vikings of legend except in place of sailing the vast waters of Earth they sailed through space. Enzeru thought the idea of it was silly at first but was not beginning to think it was true. With every fight she became stronger and with every bit of strength came a bit of hope her father might be out there in space flying around in a space ship battling evil. “Ah, there you are young lady. Right on time, that means you’re late since you’re usually early.” An old voice spoke from inside the little house. “Sorry master, I was held up by my assistant again. She hates doing the book keeping.” Enzeru explained. “All the same, I have an important task for you.” As he spoke the squat old man exited his home, grinning. (Word Count: 306) |

“Oh, no, not another literature shopping run,” Enzeru sighed and shook her head. “Actually it’s not anything of the sort. I can’t be a pervert all the time, sometimes I have to be a martial arts master.” Master Roshi began as entered the door way, “I want to show you something that washed up on the beach a few days ago.” Enzeru was skeptical to say the least. She had not fully trusted the man not to try anything funny since their first encounter, despite her putting him in his place. She followed him anyway, after all a good pupil must trust their master enough to learn, and this sounded like an opportunity to do so. Inside the hut was a rather large rust colored egg. The texture resembled a polished rock and it resonated a warmth that was unfamiliar. “This is the egg of a giant golden falcon known to roost about fifty miles from here. I’m sure the mother bird is worried and missing the egg. I do not know how it came to be washed up on my island but this is indeed your greatest trial yet.” The old man was still a moment and suddenly very serious, “I want you to return this egg no matter what happens.” Enzeru’s curious look was seemingly unnoticed as the old master continued. “You must swim across the water, scale a plateau, and then climb a mountain to reach the nest. It will be a dangerous journey and will likely take you more than a full day.” “Why can I not just fly there?” Enzeru asked, “Surely the egg isn’t that heavy.” “I do not want to take the risk of loosing the egg. The bird that lays it is endangered from poachers and country folk hunting it for its feathers and meat. Likely your delivering this egg to its nest will save the species.” “If it’s that dire a quest then I shall accept it.” Enzeru was certain this particular journey would be hard. She had not gone anywhere without flying since she learned how. (Word Count: 346) |

“Then let’s get this big egg strapped to your back. The sooner you leave the better,” Master Roshi said before grabbing a bunch of rope and cloth. The old man carefully fastened the egg onto Enzeru’s back. “That should do it. Remember, the fate of a species rests on your back.” He opened his front door while Enzeru exited. A sly smirk formed on his face as he watched the young woman walk to the edge of the water. Training her was easier than he thought it would be. Roshi went back inside his house to read the latest ‘literature’ he had one of his other students bring him. Enzeru would be fine. She looked out over the waves. It was a long swim to the next shore. I can do this, deep breaths. I was a great swimmer in college. She thought to herself as she got ready to walk out into the salty sea. Enzeru tightened her fist and ran headlong into the next crashing wave. She began swimming as quickly as she could, hoping the egg was able to take the pressure. It weighed her down as if she had a stone tied to her back. She continued her swim, left arm right arm kicking as fast as she could and moving forward quickly. Enzeru looked down into the ocean. It really was beautiful the way the sun reflected off the shallow parts of the ocean floor. She listened to the songs of the gulls that flew about diving in and out of the water. No wonder the old man lived all the way out here, it was down right peaceful. The sea creatures did not seem to mind her being there. They seem to accept her and allow her to move along on her way as they went on theirs. Even the waves seemed to be calmed out in the middle of the sea. However, she was not the only person out on the sea, she was being watched. (Word Count: 329) |

Enzeru reached the other shore drenched and out of breath. She forgot how physically challenging swimming could be when you really pushed yourself. She looked around for a pathway and found one hidden in the trees. This should lead to the plateau she was supposed to scale. Before she could set foot on the path Enzeru heard the sound of a jet ski behind her. She quickly turned around to see a man in a mask. “Isn’t it a little early for Halloween?” She jested as the man began walking in her direction. “Spare me. Give me the egg, it’s worth a fortune and I want that money,” He growled. “A simple poacher, I see. Well, if you tangle with me your goose will be cooked.” Enzeru laughed a little at her own joke. The man drew a knife. And came at her. Enzeru simply punched the man in the gut and ax kicked him in the back. He fell to the ground unconscious. “And you thought you could take me on? Sad.” She began her trek down the pathway. It was overgrown with vines and leaves and hard to trek on foot with a big egg on your back. Enzeru stumbled a few times on some exposed roots before she reached the plateau. It was a huge flat rock to say the least. It had to of been at least twenty five feet above Enzeru’s head. This would certainly be a challenge. Good thing she brought some of her excavation gear. Enzeru dug through her messenger bag a little before finding her expandable pick axe in the bottom of the bag. Always at the bottom, everything I need is always at the bottom. She thought to herself as she rolled her eyes. She had to start finding a better way to organize her pack. Maybe more capsules would help. (Word Count: 310) |

This wasn’t as hard as the old man made it sound. She swam the sea, thwarted a poacher, and was about to climb a plateau. This was more like normal life than it was a mission for her, the only thing different is the precious egg she carried on her back. Enzeru took out a second pick from her bag. This was easy, just like scaling a pyramid only it’s not on any kind of an incline. She gripped her picks firmly and began the arduous task of climbing the massive wall. Left pick, right pick, she carefully attached her tools to the wall and then pulled them free again. She would be at the top in no time. After all, it was just another exploratory expedition for her. She began whistling a tune about halfway up. Such a lovely day for this as well. The fair weather made it easier for certain. For a moment Enzeru thought she heard a bird on the plateau above her but the sound never came again so she thought it was her own song echoing. Hours later Enzeru reached the top. There was grassland as far as she could see, open fields. Way in the distance she saw what might be a jagged mountain, but that was silly, a mountain on a plateau. Enzeru stretched her legs. Master Roshi did say this part is better off run rather than walked. He must have had a good reason for that or he wouldn’t have said that. She wasn’t on the track team in school or anything but as a kid, and adult, she had found herself running for her life from traps and bad guys. Certainly a little run through the flowers wasn’t going to be any trouble. A thought crossed her mind, this would be a really fun game if she tried to race her shadow. It sounded silly but kids used to do it all the time when they were stuck in the jungle or desert with the scientist parents. (Word Count: 338) |

Enzeru readied herself, this was going to be quite a ways to run and she was no professional runner. She was barely an amateur fighter. “Three,” She began counting, “Two.” Enzeru dug her right foot back into the dirt. “One.” She pushed off with all her strength. Here on the plateau it was not as dry as the desert, in fact it was rather lush here. There was no dust to kick up only plant material. Enzeru hadn’t thought about it before but there might be animals up here. She certainly did not want to step on a snake. Sure she stood a decent chance of dodging it but the poor snake would be hurt. The grass was taller here than most of the places she had been. It came nearly up to her hips. As she trampled the grass she made a pathway. This was bothersome seeing as how some idiot was clearly following her now. Who in the world was that guy and who was he working for? Likely just a freelance nobody. She thought to herself as she speed through the grassy plains. After about thirty minutes she looked at her goal. It seemed no closer than it had when she began despite her quickness. Enzeru stopped a moment and sighed. She was thirsty and needed a drink. She opened her pack and took out a bottle of water. Enzeru drank deeply from it before returning it to her pack. She stretched her legs again. “Alright, breaks over, back to running,” Enzeru once again took her position and counted down a start off. She was off once again, running through the grass. The egg on her back certainly slowed her down. That and combination with the training equipment she decided to wear. After all this was just like training for her. (Word Count: 304) |

Enzeru stopped again for some more water. It was a fairly warm day and she didn’t want to get dehydrated. She removed the bottled from her pack and finished it. Next time she stopped she would have to refill it either in a stream or get the water distiller from her capsule collection. After she placed it safely back in her pack, she didn’t believe in littering nature, she heard a growling sound from behind her. Enzeru slowly turned around to find herself face to face with a lion. “Nice kitty, good kitty,” She whispered as she slowly began to back away. The lion roared and took a swipe at her with his paw. Enzeru dodged it and began running for her life. She couldn’t fight the thing with a big egg on her back and besides she might hurt the poor guy. She didn’t remember seeing any female lions around, not any other lions for that matter, so she concluded that he must be a lone male. Likely very young or else he would have a female or two with him at least. Enzeru continued running, not caring to look back to see if he was still there. She wanted to get as much distance between her and Mr. Big Kitty as possible. The mountain looked closer now and seemed to be getting closer faster finally. Enzeru continued to run, hoping to close in on the mountain before nightfall. I do not want to be out here after dark with big cats and tall grass. No thank you. She thought to herself as she came into sight of a car of some sort. There appeared to be someone sitting inside it. She turned around and ran backwards long enough to be sure the lion was not following her. The way was clear. The lion had tired out long before she turned. Enzeru faced forward again and approached the car. (Word Count: 320) |

Enzeru stopped beside the car, “Hi there, what are you doing all the way out here?” Her voice was calm and friendly. The man stood up out of the car and pointed a small gun at her, “So the lion didn’t eat you or rip you to shreds. Now I’m going to have to recapture the beast.” “Why not leave him here? It would be much more pleasant than a cage,” Enzeru replied, keeping an eye on the gun. She frowned, “Why in the world would you do something like this anyway?” “I’m a poacher, it’s what I do,” The man replied, still pointing the gun. “Well, haven’t you ever thought of being something else? Something nonviolent?” Enzeru asked and sat down on the ground. The man frowned, “Get up.” “I’m tired, I have been running all day, I’m going to sit down. Now don’t change the subject, answer my question.” Enzeru’s stern eyes had the effect she wanted, well, almost. “I wanted to be an actor, but what business is it of yours?” “Really? That would be so fun, what stopped you?” Enzeru pretended to be truly interested. It was working, the man we starting to let his guard down. “Mother. She said I should do something with money in it. When I became a poacher she disowned me anyway,” the man replied, still aiming the gun at Enzeru. “Then what use is it remaining in this profession. Go out there and follow your dream!” Enzeru stood up and tried to act inspiring. Surely this would work. The man let the gun drop and he formed a fist and punched straight in the air. “Yeah! I’m gonna do it!” He put the gun away, “Sorry about all this mess.” “No problem. Just get out of here,” Enzeru told him as she stretched for the last bit of her journey. The man jumped into his car, “Hey wait a minute, this is a trick.” He jumped back out and went to pull his gun. Enzeru was quicker and punched him hard. The man fell to the ground, unconscious but alive. “Nope, it’s the truth. Never give up a dream.” (Word Count: 359) |

Enzeru put the man back in his car. He was a pain in the butt but he didn’t need to be eaten by the lion. That would certainly serve no justice. She stretched and got ready to run the last bit of her journey to the mountain. It seemed this egg thing was getting heavier, but she was probably just getting more tired. Enzeru had rarely tested her limits quite like this. It was almost as if all her training and hard work was being put to the test right here and now. Without even giving herself a proper count down Enzeru was off again. She couldn’t wait to get this thing off her back and fly again. Running was tiring. It was after noon before she reached the jagged mountain and stopped running again. She looked up into the clouds hoping to see the top. She thought she saw a nest far up in the clouds but decided it was her imagination. There should be a place where it flattens out near the top. Enzeru thought to herself. Where else would an egg go if not a nest? She rested a moment and drank some water from the capsule-ized distiller in her pack. Enzeru stayed there for a good ten minutes before packing up and looking once again at the mountain. Somehow she had to climb this thing. Enzeru looked for good foot and hand holds. She was lucky enough to find some. Slowly she began climbing the steep mountain. Little did she knew she was following in the footsteps of some of the greatest fighters Earth had ever known. Thankfully she was alone now. There was no one here to interrupt her or disturb her climb. There was no man, no lion. It was just Enzeru, the mountain, and soon the clouds. (Word Count: 304) |

Enzeru climbed higher and higher, nearly escaping falling a few times thinks to her favorite ability, the ability to fly. The egg now weighed down on her like a ton of bricks. It was getting more and more difficult to keep her balance. The top was coming nearer as Enzeru began the last bit of her journey. Within minutes she was pulling herself onto a ledge and standing up for the first time in nearly two hours. All around her were these same eggs, all of them were different colors but all of them seemed to be the same shape and size. She walked over to the great pile and set her own egg down here. It was finally done. She looked around at the other eggs and it seemed peculiar that there were this many un-hatched eggs. Then it hit her, these were actually rocks. They may have been polished and honed to the shape of eggs but they were all rocks. Silly old man and his silly old tricks. He just wanted to test me. Enzeru laughed out loud and smirked. Before taking off Enzeru sat down on the ledge and looked out over the land. The sun was beginning to set and everything seemed to resonate a different color than it usually was. It was beautiful. Enzeru drank a little water and then returned to the rocks to examine them further. It seemed the old man had been tricking people like this for years unless they were all part of the show as well. When she got back to the island she was certainly going to give him a stern talking to. Why in the world did he not tell her the truth from the beginning? She would have still done it for the training experience. Perhaps others had not been as dedicated as she was. (Word Count: 309) |

Enzeru once again packed up her belongings and prepared to take the true final leg of her journey, the fly back to the island. The journey she had just completed had certainly left her feeling stronger yet exhausted and hungry. She had already finished off the emergency rations in her pack but they didn’t come near enough to satisfying her sayian like hunger. She flew off the ledge and tried to keep low in hopes of finding a fruit tree or vegetable field or even a berry bush somewhere. There had to be something nearby. It wasn’t until she reached the beach that she found a banana tree with a full ripe bushel ready for picking. Naturally she picked it and ate the whole thing, one banana at a time since the peels were nasty both in taste and dirt content since she had dropped it on the sand. This was still not enough to tide her hunger. Enzeru decided she was just going to have to deal with it until she made it to Master Roshi’s house. She began her fly over the ocean, the salty sea air was always a pleasant and welcoming change from the dry sands of the desert. For a while Enzeru contented herself with the thought of exploring sea ruins for a while and leaving the pyramids to capsule corp. She laughed as such a silly prospect and allowed her hand to dip into the water for a handful of water. I should clean up a little before I get there. Enzeru used the water to wash her face and arms. She was certainly dirtier than she thought. The island was in sight now and growing closer quickly. How was she going to tell him about it and how was she going to explain the man following her. The island was just as she left it. Calm and quiet with the exception of a young student doing yard work. Master Roshi wasn’t outside so Enzeru concluded he must be inside. “Master, I’m back,” Enzeru called out as she approached the door. “Come in there is someone I want you to meet,” Master Roshi’s voice replied from behind the door to the little island home. Enzeru opened the door, the hinges creaked a bit. She was caught off guard by what she saw. The man that had been following her was here, sitting down, and drinking tea. “What’s going on here? Am I being punked? Am I on television?” Enzeru growled. “Not anything of the sort. I asked this young man to try and stop you on your quest.” The old master replied from his seat across from the man. “You sure gave me a run for my money, miss.” The man said as he rubbed the bump on the back of his head. “Sorry about that, didn’t know or I would have gone easier on you.” Enzeru turned to Master Roshi and glare, “And it was a bloody rock. If you had told me I would have still went through with it for the journey.” “I am glad to hear that. After all it’s about the journey, not the destination. Just like your training.” The old man replied. Enzeru nodded and smirked, “So did I pass whatever test you hoped I would pass?” Master Roshi stood up and laughed, “With flying colors. The story I got from my friend here seems to tell quite a tale.” She shot a look at the man before continuing, “So what now? Was that the end?” “No my dear, only the beginning. You have proved your speed, strength, resilience, and conscience are all in the right places. Now you must choose a new technique to learn and practice.” The old man walked over to Enzeru, “So what will it be?” “No less than the legendary kamehameha attack.” “Then kamehameha it is.” Enzeru and her master left the house for more training. After all, training is only the journey with the battle the destination. (Word Count: 361) |
