Enzeru sat in Master Roshi's living room drinking a glass of lemonade with her feet propped up and the television on. She had completed her training for the day and was in no hurry to go back to the desert. After all, the sand and rocks would stay there for a while longer.

Master Roshi was outside training another student. The old man never seemed to stop going. However, Enzeru enjoyed a rest once in a while. Perhaps her age would catch her faster that his would. Then again, perhaps not. She still didn’t know anything about where her father came from after all.

She stopped flipping channels when she found the news. Once again the girl with the blond hair and Mcgruff the stuffy were hosting. Why couldn’t they get some more pleasant personalities?

The dog man news reporter looked particularly grumpy as he tapped his note cards firmly on the desk in front of him. “And more sad news from the water front, the city of Veltin continues to be under attack from undead. Sources say that black magic is involved. Bah, superstitious nonsense if you ask me.”

The human woman next to him smiled and giggled, “I don’t know about that, Harmen, stranger things have happened.”

“Speaking of which, where are all these so called heroes when you need them?”

“I don’t know but they better act fast or the city will be lost for good.”

Enzeru jumped up out of her seat and ran outside. “Master, we have a problem.”

“Good job on your kicks kid,” Roshi told his student before he walked over to Enzeru. “What’s wrong?”

“Veltin is over run with undead. They’re saying black magic is to blame.” Enzeru replied.

“Do you believe everything you see on television?” Roshi laughed.

“This was on the news. Who do you think should go?” Enzeru asked, trying to remain calm.

“Who else can I send but you? Everyone else is hard to reach or not ready for something like this,” Master Roshi frowned and looked out across the water. “Don’t rush in head first, use stealth and try to avoid the undead. Go straight to the people who started all this mess and take them down.”

Enzeru nodded, “Naturally I’ll spare lives and hopefully save a few while I’m at it. Got any more advice?”

“No. Just fly fast, I’ve got to get back to training this youngster. I’ll turn on the news as soon as I’m done.” Master Roshi returned to the young man he was teaching.

The water was calm and the sun was setting. Soon it would be dark. It would be the perfect time for both black magic and stealthy operations. It would certainly be a tough mission. Enzeru has never fought against magic before.

She stared out across the water, it was time to leave. Enzeru took to the air and rose up high. She would need a good vantage point to spot a good place to land and begin her search.

The dark ocean seemed to be a little lazy today, the waves were not quite as high or as strong as they had been a few days earlier. Perhaps this would be beneficial some how.

Enzeru came to the mainland when the sun was just barely peeking out over the water. Soon darkness would set in and there would be nothing but starlight to guide her.

She found a place near the docks to hide out until it got a little darker. Enzeru watched the undead minions patrol the docks. They were clearly expecting something to happen. Well, something was going to happen, but on Enzeru’s terms; which included creeping quietly past the guards and up to the fire starters themselves.

The silent thud thud of undead boots fell on the docks to break the eerie silence. Not even a cricket could be heard chirping here. Just the walking of the guards.

Enzeru crept closer to the docks for a better look. What she got was a stronger whiff and began to think being downwind was a bad idea. These corpses were still rotting. She watched as another undead joined the one guarding the docks.

It appeared they were stepping up the guard here, perhaps she was expected. No use making her hosts wait, that would make her a lousy guest. Enzeru smirked and began to creep up the hill under the walkway.

Perhaps it would have been better to take a higher road. She thought as she began to duck lower and lower until she was practically crawling.

When Enzeru came to the end of her crawl space she looked around for guards. She waited for two undead to make their way on their patrol. The smell of this place was really beginning to get to her at this point. She gagged a little but held back, trying her best to remain silent.

Once the two undead had moved on Enzeru crouched just outside of the crawl space. There was no one in sight but that didn’t mean they would not be able to spot her. She slowly moved through the shadows, creeping silently along until she reached the entrance to the docks.

There were two guards by the gate. It seemed the guy running this operation liked to do things in twos.

Enzeru avoided the gate and made her way along the fence line until she came to an opening perhaps tore by some kids looking to explore or a thief that was looking for goods. She slipped through with little effort and hurried off into the shadows.

Enzeru continued to make her way through the dark streets. There was no sound to be heard. No people hurrying home, no animals rummaging through the garbage for an evening meal, nothing. The silence was almost deafening. She wouldn’t mind so much if the whole town did not stink of rotting meat.

That was somewhat a good thing. After all, if you could smell someone coming you could hide much more quickly.

It seemed there were no living people left here. Were they killed by the dead to join them; or perhaps killed by dark magic to create this forsaken army of decay? There was no way of knowing unless she interrogated someone. Were the dead smart enough to answer to questions from someone threatening to send them back to the after life? Did they even enjoy being back?

There were so many questions and so few answers. One question she was pretty sure she knew the answer to was the one that asked where the leadership of this mess was hiding. The middle of the city, the city hall building near the top, was the best place for it.

Enzeru was no stranger to this little seaside fishing town, well, little being the understatement. She often came here on errand for her master. The old man seemed to constantly want some kind of magazine or food stuffs.

She ducked in a doorway when she smelled something foul and waited for the stench to pass. Once it had she continued creeping in the direction of city hall. Soon this town would be free, Enzeru only hoped that there was still someone left to free.

There was someone talking up ahead but Enzeru couldn’t make out what they were saying but there was less stench here, perhaps they were resistance to this terrible tragedy. She watched them carefully and began to creep closer in hopes of hearing what they had to say.

Enzeru got close enough to listen in on the conversation. It seemed to be a man talking to someone, perhaps giving orders.

“Alright you lot, listen up. We got one shot at winnin this thing and one shot only. Our sniper will work his way onto the roof. The rest of us will distract the guys inside. It’s likely he his more than a dozen guards in that place so we will quickly be over run. Do not hesitate to shoot, I don’t care if you hit us and him just make sure and hit him.”

“Understood,” Another man replied.

“Remember, we sacrifice ourselves today for the good of our familys’ futures. Are we ready?” The first man asked.

These idiots are going to all get themselves killed. If they are dealing with black magic then there is no way even the sniper will survive. That’s it, I’m taking control of this.

Enzeru stepped out of the shadows, “Looks like you guys need some help and I’m the lady for the job.”

The terrified men jumped and looked horror struck.

“Is, is it a ghost?” One man asked.

“No, and it’s not an undead, smells too nice.”

“Yeah, and it talked.”

“Ghosts can talk.”

“Yeah, but she’s solid.”

“Some ghosts can appear solid.”

“Then touch her.”

“I’m not going to do it, you do it.”

These men are acting like children, what in the world is wrong with them?

Enzeru walked up to the men, “I’m not a ghost or one of those foul minions of death. I am a human, well, half human, and I’m here to help you. All I ask is that you give up this foolish talk of rushing in unprepared.”

“Unprepared? I have you know Joe is an excellent marksman.” The leader growled.

“Do you really think a bullet will do much against magic? No. you have to out wit him.” Enzeru smirked as she gained the attention of everyone in the group.

“Now that I have your attention, I think I can come up with a better plan.” Enzeru said before leading then men into an abandoned house.

“Good, what is it?” The leader asked.

“You all stay here while I kick this loser’s butt,” Enzeru smiled and began walking to the door.

“No, it’s not going to happen. If you think the lot of us don’t stand a chance what chance do you have?”

“I am a very strong martial artist. I have already beat the odds many times before,. My master trained me so well that there is no way I could loose.” Enzeru’s voice was calm and confident.

“You sound a little over confident. Other’s have tried and failed.”

“I’m different. That is all you need to know.” Enzeru smiled, he had the look of a worried child on his face, the poor man.

‘Perhaps I should try to come back when I defeat the necromancer. If nothing else but to let these people know I’m okay.’

“Mark my words, shela, you will need our help before it’s all said and done.”

“Maybe so, maybe no. There are many possibilities but only one outcome.” Enzeru sighed and looked out the broken window at city hall. A flag flew over the building, one with a skill and cross bones.

“I’ll tell you guys what, when that flag no longer flies that will mean the necromancer is defeated.” Enzeru nodded to the building, “I’ll be taking it as a souvenir.”

“What are you, woman?” The leader man asked.

“I am many things. An archeologist, a woman, a fighter, but above all I am a future hero.” Enzeru stood proud and strong before the men who almost seemed in awe.

“Well, if you’re that strong than you wouldn’t mind a quick arm wrestling match.” The leader man said as he sent his strongest muscle man forward.

“Do we really have time for games?” Enzeru sighed and waved the man forward.

Enzeru and the man sat down on the ground across from each other. The leader of the group came over and kneeled down beside them.

“Clasp hands.” The leader man said.

Enzeru and the strong looking man clasped hands.

“Ready?” The leader man put his hand over the other two’s. “Keep your elbows down. Go!”

Enzeru held her arm still as the man attempted to move it. The man was breaking a sweat and looking like he was about to strain himself. Enzeru laughed, “Don’t hurt yourself.”

The man with muscles looked like he was about to hurt himself for real. Enzeru acted fast by simply putting her hand down for the win.

“Sorry I had to beat you. Probably should have done it sooner, did you pull anything?” Her concerned eyes leveled with his and stared.

“Nah, just a little sore. You’re somethin else, lady.” The muscle man replied.

“Then it’s settled, you all wait here and watch the flag. I’ll be back when the mission is successfully completed.”

The men frowned and the leader stepped forward, “Look, it’s going to be dangerous even for you. Most of our strongest men have been turned already. And like you said, magic is dangerous. It is real magic, I saw the first man turned with my own eyes.”

Enzeru frowned, “So what happened? Did the necromancer kill someone and then raise them back to server him?”

“That is exactly what happened.” The leader replied.

“Then I have no choice but to keep my wits about me. That’s good, though, I’ve been looking for a good challenge and this might just be it.”

“Oh, one more thing, don’t kill the necromancer, just take his book. The guy holding the book is my brother.” The muscle man added.

The leader shot the muscle man a dirty look.

Enzeru raised an eyebrow curiously. This was a bit more complicated than she expected. “Care you explain your reasoning?”

“I think the book is possessing him.” The muscle man said pointedly.

“The book, huh? So if one of us takes it from him it will possess us as well, am I correct?” Enzeru crossed her arms and stared.

“Yeah, but it will take time. My brother had the book for about a week before this happened.”

“Good, then I have more than a week to destroy it. Never the less, I’ll be doing it right away. Anyone got a match?”

“I got a lighter,” the leader of the group said.

“Perfect. I’ll take it with me,” Enzeru held out her hand for the lighter.

The man hesitated.

“What’s wrong?”

“It’s been our link to survival and if you fail we will loose it.”

“I will not fail. Trust me.”

The man handed over the lighter, “Be careful.”

“You’re too worried. Relax a while, I’ll take that flag as soon as I can.” Enzeru smiled and nodded to the group before sneaking out the door and into the darkness.

‘Those guys were really messed up. Is this what happens to people when they are traumatized and scared for life?’

She continued up the hill to the city hall building. It was big and made of red bricks. There were many windows all over the building, perhaps a weakness she could exploit.

Enzeru approached the building just in time to hide behind a statue before being seen by an undead leaving the building.

‘Close calls are not good. Stay focused.’

She waited for the undead to move on before climbing into a window.

‘Now to find the stairs.’

The room she had fallen into seemed to be an office of sorts. Paper had been scattered through the room as if someone had been in a hurry to leave, opened a window, and the typical messes between the two circumstances created a whirlwind of paper.

Enzeru peeked out the cracked open door. The way was clear.

‘As if they are inviting trouble. Is this a trap?’ Enzeru thought to herself as she slowly entered the hallway.

This place reminded her of an elaborate school building. The floors were polished marble, slightly dirtied from not being cleaned and from the undead dragging their muddy feet all over the place.

‘Some place you have here necromancer, letting the minions dirty it up and everything.’

The halls were dark and silent, seemingly deserted. There were no faces in the doorways, no sign of human life, or after life. This made Enzeru relax a little and that was a bad thing.

A warrior relaxed is a warrior that can easily be caught off their guard by surprises. When in a hostile environment, no matter how quiet, one must always keep their wits about them and their senses tuned to everything around them.

Enzeru continued through the hall until she came to the stairs. The marble staircase was adorned with black metal rails. Along the climb there were photos of the ex mayors who had once seen to this city, many of these photos were partnered with broken glass. Someone had done this on purpose.

She began to climb these stairs, carefully keeping low to the ground where the largest amount of shadow still was. The windows that seemed carefully positioned between every few framed photos so it could illuminate them all with daylight.

The top of the stairs did not take long to reach. This was only a three story building, after all.

‘Where oh where has that little book gone?’ Enzeru thought to herself as she scanned the corridor ahead.

As she continued forward she began to hear voices of men talking. Enzeru approached cautiously, trying to keep to the darkest places of the hall.

“No no no, that’s all wrong,” An airy male voice spoke just out of Enzeru’s vision. “I want you to toss that away and redo it. Honestly, they call you the best artist in town and you can’t seem to get a simple portrait right.”

Enzeru rolled her eyes, it sounded like someone fancied himself a king among the dead.

“Yes master, right away,” The frightened artist replied.

“Good man, at least you’re smart enough to know your place unlike the lady hiding in the shadows. Don’t be afraid, dear woman, come join us.”

Enzeru sighed, seems she had been discovered. She came into view and smiled, hoping he could not see through her exterior and into the warrior’s heart that was now beating more swiftly.

“I’m sorry, I’m from a neighboring town and heard on the news something had happened here. I thought I’d come see for myself. I hope I’m not intruding.” Enzeru often managed to weasel her way out of tight spaces by simply being nice.

“Oh not at all, in fact, I was thinking about fetching a woman from the next town to take a special place in my court.”

“Really? What did you have in mind?”

“Well, every king needs a queen and the women around here are all dead. Well, you’ve seen them walking around, the lot of them rotting corpses barely hanging together.”

“Yes, you have a point.”

“Splendid. Just answer me one question. How did you get here with no one seeing you?”

Enzeru laughed, “Do you really want to hear such a dull story?”

“Yes, certainly.”

“I can fly and I have a special ribbon that makes me turn invisible whenever I want.”

“Really? Then, my dear wife to be, please allow me to see this ribbon.”

“I’m not really sure if it will work for you or not. I have not known you long enough to tell if you have the wisdom to operate such a device.”

“How dare you. I am a necromancer and I have a degree in robotics. Let me see it.” The necromancer replied.

“As you wish,” Enzeru smiled and pulled out her hair ribbon. She reluctantly passed it to the necromancer who greedily took it.

The necromancer tied the ribbon on his arm and examined it. “Looks like a normal ribbon.”

“Yes, but if you speak the correct words it will make you invisible.” Enzeru smiled and watched the necromancer with her arms crossed.

‘This shall be interesting.’

The necromancer thought a moment, “Abra Kadabra.” He waited moment, “Did it work?”

“No, those were not the words.”

“Vini vedi vici. Open Sesame. Disappear.”

“Where’d you go?” Enzeru gasped and looked around. Oh course she could still see him, it was a normal hair ribbon after all.

“Remarkable.”

“Wait, I found you. The book doesn’t seem to be invisible. I think the magic might be protecting the book from other magic.”

“Yes, I see. Since you are to be my queen I should be able to trust you with it. Hold this so I can properly try it out.” The necromancer handed Enzeru the book.

She took the book reluctantly, or so it seemed. Enzeru slowly slipped her hand into her pocket and sat down on one of the thrones. “So, are you impressed with it my dear?”

“This is amazing, I’ve never seen anything like it,” The artist added.

“Oh, you’re still here? Get out of here little man,” The necromancer growled at the artist.

“If you like the ribbon that much then you can have it. Think of it as an engagement gift.” Enzeru smiled and slowly slid the lighter out of her pocket and folded her hands over the book as if she were keeping it safe. This was it, the last leg of the journey.

“Why don’t we celebrate, I’ll have the undead go to the next town for wine. They broke all the wine in this town turning the store keepers.” The necromancer smirked.

“So how did you come upon this book?”

“I was searching though the library and found a map in another book. I followed the map to a cave. The book was just sitting on a rock waiting for me.”

“That is, quite convenient. Tell me more about your family.”

“What’s to tell? My father was the mayor, he lost the last election and died soon after. My loose brother didn’t bother doing anything but I brought my father back and he’s currently sitting in his office and happy again.”

“Are you sure he’s happy? The undead in town didn’t seem too happy. I mean, they’re rotting to pieces. What would it be like to be alive and falling apart?”

“Maybe you’re right, but I’ll loose all my power if I loose my army.”

“That may be true. But why be in power and have people looking to you for guidance all the time? Wouldn’t you rather live a normal quiet life?”

“What would you know about power?”

“Well, I lead a huge expedition in the desert. Remember the pyramids? People still want to blame me for that when me and most of my people were in town.”

“That is harsh. Maybe power isn’t everything it’s cracked up to be.”

“Well, this town has turned into a ghost town. It would be alight if the undead went about like normal people but they mope about and hide in corners until they are ordered to do something.”

“Then I shall order it!”

“No, please. Just end it. Give up your power and have a normal quiet life.” Enzeru settled her thumb on the lighter.

“No, I must have this power, I must keep it!” The necromancer yelled.

Enzeru flipped the button on the lighter and the book caught fire. She stood up and let it fall to the ground.

“No!” The necromancer made a dive for the book.

Enzeru stepped in front of him and he hit her legs. The necromancer grabbed for the book frantically, tears in his eyes.

“I’m sorry I had to lie to you like I did but it was the only way to save what was left of the people of this town.”

“Can we still get married?”

“I am sorry, but I never wanted to marry you. I have other obligations and my heart isn’t in it. However, we can be friends.”

“Then let’s start over. I’m Josh, ex mayor’s son and what some people call a nerd.” He extended his hand.

“I’m Enzeru, archeologist and martial arts student.” She shook his hand and laughed.

“What’s so funny?”

“I thought you’d be tougher to beat.”

“Well, that book did have a bit of pull over me.”

“It’s only ashes now. You’re free. Now, as for me, I should get back to my master and see that he knows I’m well. Before I left I was at his place watching the news.”

“I made the news?”

“Yeah, a lot of people are pretty upset.”

“I wish I could undo all of this.”

“Then hunt dragon balls.”

“Dragon balls?”

“Yeah, they’re magical spheres with stars, there’s seven of them, and once all are gathered you can summon the dragon of this planet to grant a single wish. You can wish that the evil you caused thanks to that book was undone.”

“I’ll do it.”

“Then I’ll be leaving you to it. If you’re ever in the desert look me up and we’ll have tea.” Enzeru smiled and walked to the nearest window. She could see the bodies of the dead in the streets. Such a mess, and she didn’t have the stomach to help clean it up.

Enzeru exited through the window and flew up to where the flag was. She took it down and tied it around her neck like a scarf. She then flew down to the little building where the men were hiding.

“It’s over, go collect your dead and bury them properly. I’m going back to my master’s house.”

“And my brother?”

“Alive and you were right. The book was to blame.” Enzeru tossed him the lighter. “Bye guys.”

The men waved goodbye as their hero flew off. They never expected a woman to come and free them all, but she did.
