The room began to shake as a the ceiling split in two. A Kelioux Descender made its way into the dock. It slowly hovered above the ground as it prepared for landing. Meanwhile, the personnel it carried inside finished their preparations for landing and made their way to the exit ramp. A group of 4 armed Kelioux soldiers huddled around Alain Zanze. His chest, usually visible from the gap in his jacket, was now covered with a tattoo showing rank among the Kelioux forces of Cauldron. Just barely an officer among them after his graduation from the academy. He had been shipped to Cauldron, a literal hell-hole of manual labor. Pity could probably be felt for any of the people actually working here.

The Descender finished its landing and one of the soldiers within it pushed the button for the ramp to extend to the ground and the door to open. He stepped out first, rifle lazily held in one hand aimed toward the ground. Behind him stepped Alain who took a moment to look at his surroundings. A simple landing chamber, completely empty. The dome roof had just snapped shut and reminded Alain he was part of a line. He exhaled before following his escort down the steps.

The man ahead opened each door for him to pass and led him through the maze-like hallways leading to the barracks. His right hand was growing a little tired of holding the black bag which held most of his military issued clothing. His eyes darted around the corridors as he walked down them, if he were to be working here he needed to familiarize himself. Finally he had arrived to the officers quarters, he turned and noticed a few of his escort had wandered off and left him by himself with only the leading soldier. No matter, the door ahead required a retinal scan for entry. Alain was motioned to do so.

"You're asked to meet with Major Zalus. Once you drop your things leave immediately." The soldier said, Alain could sense a grin from beneath the man's helmet. He was happy to finish his job and move on. "Oh, and there is an assignment ready for you too." He added with a chuckle.

Alain placed his hand on the screen, a scan was initiated. The door slid open once access was granted. Directly across from the entrance he had just walked through was a man seated behind a desk. He wore a cap and a long coat from what Alain could see, the rest was hidden behind a few neatly stacked papers and other items. Most likely it was Major Zalus, in charge of the mining and ship building operations at this outpost. Alain calmly walked forward, forgetting his salute.

"Your late." Came Zalus' voice, he hadn't even looked up from the paper he was reading. "According to these logs, you were meant to arrive yesterday with three more freshmen." The Major looked up and locked eyes with Alain. The silver-haired Avalonian rolled his eyes.

"I had an assignment ready, what is it?" He asked while crossing his arms. Zalus' attempt at intimidating him would require a lot more then just a simple stare. The Keliouxian looked down again and pulled up another paper.

"Some lady is screaming and crying for help outside the outpost, the guards can't touch her, and it seems like she really wants something. Coincidence you just arrived so your taking the job. Take a man or two if you want."

Alain turned and exited, he hadn't been given more info on it but handling a crazy screaming lady wasn't exactly one of the hardest thing to do. Even if she could dodge lasers. He walked back to his barracks and sat down on his cot. He glared at the bag he had left on the other side of the cot, nothing in there was useful. What he wore already was all he needed.

A group of off-duty cadets joyfully walked into the room, laughing and talking about whatever they had done that day. Alain smirked, the next time they entered...they wouldn't be laughing or smiling. He stood up and pointed at the one in the center. "My name is Alain Zanze, I'm your new commanding officer, and your going to help me restrain some old lady."

Steam radiated from the jeep's roof. It's design meant to absorb heat into the outer layer of the metal plates that surrounded it and use that same heat for energy. Cauldron's abnormally high temperatures and barren wasteland would be a sure death for anyone stranded. Alain was now part of a 4-man team he had set up to collect some "Crystal Ash" for some old annoying hag. Everyone jumped in their seat as they drove over a pothole. The cracked ground and rock formations made the all-terrain jeep they currently rode in the only land vehicle that could be used, it was the safest due to its energy source. Also, it's specialization allowed the inside of it too remain it's coolness while the flying transports did not.

"Hag, what is your problem. Leave!" Yelled Alain as he saw the old Keliouxian woman chanting something in front of a guard. Her wooden staff was being waved in the air, and the bells attached to her purple robes jingled as she moved the staff. Alain's order caught her attention and stopped the chant. She annoying waved the soldier away, which he understood and walked away with a shrug of relief. A bony finger now pointed at Alain from the woman.

"You...curse you too!" She yelled, her eyes widened as she did so. They were almost completely grayed out and were an odd sight to behold as they shone brightly. "You will help me or be cursed like the others!" She added as she jabbed her finger at Alain.

"No. Leave." He countered, he just wanted to rest. Space travel was tiring, even if you did have to sleep for most of it.

"Help...or else you will be cursed as your kin!" She squinted her eyes this time, it implied a hidden meaning. She didn't mean the Keliouxians or the Avalonians.

"What do you need help with so badly that your cursing left and right?" Alain asked, more interested on the question...but he would find out more later.

Finally it came to stop. Alain lifted the mask that was wrapped around his neck and dangled down to his chest. He placed it over his mouth and nose and held it against his face while he tightened the strap with the other hand. The three he had brought with him wore the standard Cauldron-Kelioux armor and wore full helmets to filter the fumes. The back part of the vehicle slid upward, allowing Alain and two others two exit. The driver would remain with the jeep.

A bead of sweat already formed on Alain's face and rolled down casually, stopped by a swipe of his head. He surveyed the area for a moment before turning to one of the soldiers. He was taught about most of Cauldron but wasn't exactly familiar with everything. A nod from his squad-mate assured this to be the northern continent. It was more of an enormous lake of lava with connecting platforms surrounded or impaled by giant protruding rocks. At random the lava would shoot out in an attempt to burn the sky, an impossible task that only proved a threat to him and his team. This struggle of lava and the sky was fought on both sides, dark clouds hovered over the area with a constant discharge of lightning. Alain closed his eyes to let out a sigh and think the plan over.

"Ash. Crystal Ash. I need it. Need it." She repeated while raising her staff above her head. She placed her other hand and grabbed the end for a moment before slowly lowering her hand while moving her fingers. "Ash!"

"Where is that?" Alain asked, clueless on what the Crystal Ash actually was.

"North!" She pointed in the direction with her staff. She grabbed her wrist this time and let go, then quickly formed a fist and opened her hand again. "Fire lives. Fight it and break its bonds. Ash from the flames!"

The team spread out as the began to run down the platforms, the two Keliouxians both ran down with rifles aimed ahead. They reached the end of the first rock formation and began to hop to the next. A wave of fire spewed upward just before they jumped. Fear gripped the team for a moment before Alain hopped across. The platform tilted to the side and lava began to flow into it at an alarming rate. It gathered in the center and returned the platform to a flat state, but doing so separated it from the one Alain had just hopped from. The lava spiraled upward and formed a triangle for just a moment before it spread out in two spots side by side. The lava began to harden just as quick as it had moved toward the center as the triangle began to take shape.

"Alain, get outta there!" Yelled one of the Soldiers, snapping Alain out of his focus. He dove to the side as the ground between him and the living flame raised, ending just at his previous spot. He looked up in amazement as a humanoid figure lay in front of him. A small trail of lava began to flow from the two holes that had been opened before, they were assumed to be the eyes. A flame no longer stood before him, but a molten rock bleeding lava. No introductions or greetings were made before it simply rushed at Alain. It's stiff knees not even bending as it hopped toward him. He right arm raised to the side as he neared Alain and swiped.

The Avalonian was already gone he placed his hand on the ground and threw himself between the rock's legs. He landed on his knee and examined his hand, even for the quick moment he had it down it had already received burns. His shoulders and back also had traces of small flames just recently burning out. The lava had luckily just clipped his back. The rock's torso turned completely around and it seemed to begin running backwards to Alain.

He grunted as he hopped back to his feet, his knee was warm from the ground and his clothes there burnt. Just feeling the ground had burnt a hole where his knee was in his robe as well. If he was to comment, it would be that the ground was getting hotter. Alain rushed forward to meet the elemental. It raised it's arm to the side and swung just as a hop-kick from Alain connected with its chest, just between the trail's of lava. It slowed down only for a moment before quickly twisting it's body, lashing its arm around right into Alain's side. He was tossed to the side into an uncontrolled roll, leaving him laying down a good twenty feet to the side. His daze was quickly ended by the searing pain of the ground.

"Watch out!" Yelled one of the Soldier's again as they began to fire on the Elemental. They were at first stunned at Alain even trying to fight it bare handed, but that ended when they saw him tossed to the side like nothing. Their beams cut through the Elemental's chest as it turned to meet them. It began rushing toward the two Soldiers but wasn't fast or strong enough. They both changed their sights to it's legs and managed to blow off chunk by chunk per volley, eventually breaking them off completely. It began to crawl, determined to kill them. It was no use as they continued firing until it was just a pile of rocks.

Alain stumbled over to the pile, he could barely walk. His body was almost entirely burnt, lava had shot out as the rock turned and landed on his body, the Elemental's arm itself was insanely hot, and then his pleasant roll across the ground also contributed. His vision was blurry but he maintained true to the task he looked at where the arm's had fallen off. They were slowly melting back into lava now that the beast was dead and could no longer sustain his shape.

The lava fell through the cracks in the ground and left a small residue. It shone brightly as did the hag's eyes. Alain ripped off a piece of his robe from his foot and collected some of the residue. He could feel it burning through the clothes and needed a better spot for it. He looked up, in time to see the Jeep jumping onto his platform and opening the back. Everyone was already grouped inside of it waiting for Alain. He rushed in and removed the helmet off of one of them and dropped the ash inside.

Alain nodded to silence the man's complaints as the door closed and the room began to cool. The Avalonian's eyes closed as he succumbed to his wounds and lost consciousness. He awoke to Vela being only inches away from his face staring into his eyes. He raised a brow in confusion.

"I heal. Among many reward for help." She said before he could ask. She winked before poking his stomach with the end of her staff. Alain looked down, first noticing a small pile of zenni on his leg, then his chest bare. The Cauldron officer tattoo removed. He looked up to find Vela but only found the squad he had taken looking at him with a look of jealousy and confusion.
