The future is tainted with blood, tears and constant agony. Pain is constant, physically the warriors will tire and mentally they will break. Love turns to hate and hate brings death. Will the light emerge amongst the darkness? Have the prophesies spoken come to bear? Or is this just another lost cause, another lost battle and more lost souls? Will they succeed where others have failed? Their agonizing deaths are the only reminder of how this life craves balance. There is no vengeance for the fallen warriors and the countless innocent lives lost in this struggle. Speech is useless, this begs for action, fearless and ready for death they will come. They will shed their blood and their tears for those they have never met. Protecting what good remains so that peace my no longer be a noble notion distant, but a reality present.

_

The room was dark, no lights or reflections could enter or escape and Ken rolled feverishly in the small cot. It was hot and the sweat poured down from his long blond hair across his face, dripping downward onto his chest and rolling off onto the cloth which stretched just barely beneath his large frame. He tossed and turned nightly now, demons haunting his dreams and turning his reality into a demented hell which he seemingly could not escape. Each time he lay to rest, closing his eyes in a futile attempt to gain some peace of mind, he could see them. Dozens of them. Women, children, fallen victim creatures so vastly wicked that they inflicted upon the innocent their wrath which was surely the most agonizing demise that Ken had ever imagined.

The dreams seemed so real, so much so that Ken could almost feel their life force draining as the savages dismembered them; pulling in each direction limbs and apparently harvesting organs. He could hear the screams of the children, even for a few moments after he was sure he was awake; yet he saw nothing outside of his dreams. They had to mean something, Ken was certain of this; partially because he reaffirmed that notion daily. It was a way to cope with the terror, a means of releasing some of the guilt and sadness he felt. He had searched for days on end, endlessly wondering across the barren landscapes of Earth in attempts to find those who haunted his dreams yet he found nothing.

After a moment of regaining his composure, of telling himself that it was just a dream and that it wasn’t real, Ken rolled off the cot and quickly dressed himself. He looked about the room, well he called it a room but it was more or less a closet with a makeshift place to sleep; not that he ever got any, and shook his head. ‘Why is this happening to me, what is the meaning of this mental torture.’ He wondered to himself as he opened the door and stepped outside, ready to once again seek out that which had already penetrated his mind.

_

The massive ship entered the Earths atmosphere at a speed which not even the greatest of pilots could control. It spun frantically as it descended, emitting a terrible screeching noise which seemed to disturb even the trees which bent side to side as if they were attempting to escape. It barely avoided smashing into a large rock face which stood at the far end of a massive canyon. The turned over on its back and then once more quickly before it slammed into the Earth, blowing apart massive boulders and tearing deep into the ground as it came to a halt. It sat calm for a moment, resting inside the deep canyon, before a small hatch popped open. The small collection of birds which had gathered to rest on the foreign ship scattered as a large hand emerged from within.

_

Dwight cursed his life as he moved along the side of the vast cornfields, shaking his head as he look upward at the sun which was beating down onto his neck and face. He whipped the sweat from his brow and got back to work, slowly pulling corn from the stalk one by one. It was a slow, painful and tiring process but he had no money for machinery and no sons to help him harvest. It would take at least three days of long hour and devastating exposure to the scorching heat until he would finally be able to rest, something that each year caused Dwight to string together a collection of obscenities and curses upon anything and everything that he routinely told himself that he would find different work. He never did.

The farmer worked for about an hour, gathering several dozen bags full of corn before he noticed a flash in the sky. He stopped a moment and then looked up, using his flattened right hand as protection from the glare of the sun, and noticed what appeared to be a shooting star. Just as he looked away an ear piercing sound nearly brought him to his knees, the farmer barely able to withstand the horrible pain. Just when he thought his head was going to explode it stopped, allowing him to look up again and notice a huge cloud of dust coming from just over the ridge.

“What on Earth was that!” his wife, Eleanor, had stuck her head out through the open window facing the corn fields. “I thought my eardrums were going to bust!”

“I have no idea. I think something crashed over the ridge, somewhere by the canyon.” He replied, making his way back to the porch. “I think Ill go have a look, maybe it was a plane or something.”

“No, don’t! Going out by yourself exploring never works out, haven’t you seen the movies!” she urged, her eyes now starting to tear up. “Please, let’s just go into town and get the police. They can take care of it, it’s their job!”

“Nonsense, it will take an hour to walk to town in this heat and someone might need help.” He retorted, already grabbing his hat from the chair on the porch. He hated wearing it, it made him sweat twice as much, but it was going to be a hike and without water he needed all the protection he could get from the sun. “Ill take the shotgun, just incase its space invaders or vampires!”

“Fine, make fun if you want it wont be my neck on the line out there!” she replied and then slammed the window shut, vanishing into another room.

“Crazy old fool” he thought to himself as he started towards the dust cloud.

It took him about ten minutes to get across the ridge and out onto the cliff which looked down into the canyon, the beaten path leading down in a spiraling manor and ending on the flat base next to what appeared to be some type of metal craft which lay still. It didn’t look like any place Dwight had ever seen, although he hadn’t left his farm in years aside from trips to the market to sell his corn or buy other supplies. He stopped for a moment and pumped the shotgun once before slowly making his way down the winding path, moving cautiously as he approached the large object.

“Hello is anyone in there!” he shouted, looking timidly around at the sides and base of the craft. “Hello?”

Almost seconds after he spoke a small latch seemed to pop open on the side of the ship. He turned and lifted the shotgun, making sure he was at a safe distance before again speaking “Who is there? Are you hurt, what the hell is this thing!” he wondered what kind of person traveled in something like this. ‘Maybe its government related’ he thought to himself.

The words barely escaped his lips before a thin red beam emerged from a hand which crept from the shadows of the ship. He saw in a split second the thin beam connect with his chest and immediately he felt the pressure of it. Dwight scrambled to catch his breath, dropping the shotgun and instead pressing his hands on his chest which was now spitting forth blood at an alarming rate. It wasn’t pain he felt, just a strong pressure as if someone was squeezing his lungs making it impossible to breathe. He knew he was done for yet a smile crept onto his face in his last moments. “Well I’ll be dammed, that old fool was right after all” he thought to himself before collapsing to the ground.

_

After an hour and a half Eleanor was in a panic. She frantically ran about the house, ranting to herself about how she warned him not to go. It was her way of containing the extreme sadness which overcame her, the fear that her husband may never be returning. She quickly gathered some water and put her shoes on, intending to go to town and find someone to help her search. She knew Dwight would not remain gone this long without checking in, something had to be wrong. With haste she made her way out of the house onto the corn fields, slinging her bag over her shoulder before turning towards town. Just as she took her first step she felt the ground shake beneath her feet.

She stopped and turned, sweat pouring off of her, fully expecting to be face to face with whatever got Dwight. There was nothing. Eleanor let out a sigh of relief and then turned again, ready now to go find help. As she continued on her way she felt another massive tremor which nearly knocked her off her feet, followed by what sounded like an explosion. She regained herself and turned to see her home was now engulfed in flames and something had crashed from the sky into the cornfields.

“Oh no, no, no this can’t be happening!” she shouted as she turned away from the crash and started to run, trying frantically to separate herself from whatever was behind her.

She got about twenty yards before she felt a sharp pain in her legs and then collapsed to the ground. Everything was black for moment and then as if God had flicked a light switch she could again see. She scrambled on the ground for a moment and tried to push herself up with her arms, trying to stand and again flee, with no avail. Breathing was becoming more difficult and she was crying, unsure of what to do or what had happened she turned over and sat facing the crash site, a feeling of sheer horror overtaking her as he saw that both her legs had been severed at the knee. She tried to scream but before she could a sharp pain shot through her chest and again there was black, this time she would not wake up.

Ken arrived in the small town only a few moments before the frenzy had started. Dozens of locals, men and women, were scattering in every direction as if the end of days was upon them. The young warrior tried to stop several of them, each time being phyiscally shoved back or simply ignored as if he did not even exist. He debated simply grabbing onto one of the men and forcing him to speak, although it would be risky as that could possibly further the commotion which was already turning into a riot. A moment later Ken understood why there was such a panic.

"There is another one!" yelled a woman who was in the middle of the street, running with her small child wrapped up in her arms.

Ken looked up to see a massive metal object, what appeared to be some type of aircraft, fly over the small town and then drop off into the distance. He estimated that it crashed a few miles away, judging by the arrival of a large dust cloud and the vibrations of the Earth only moments after it passed overhead. 'So this is what everyone is afraid of, I wonder how many of these have crashed around here.' Ken thought to himself as he pushed a small man out of the way in an attempt to get a better look into the distance.

By the time he had turned around again there was a large clearing in the middle of the crowds, as if they were making way for something; and then he saw it. There had to be at least two dozen uniformed soldiers marching forward down the street, the crowds parting to allow their passage. What had once been cries of panic and terror turned into shouts of joy and cheering which Ken found far more comforting.

They moved in lines, armed with small shields and wooden batons, taking no time to speak with those who cheered them so enthusiastically. Their uniforms were a dark crimson with a yellow sash and a silver badge on the chest. Each also wore what appeared to be a battle helmet and the two marching in the front also carried blasters as a sidearm. At the other side of the street a large armored truck arrived, Ken assumed it would carry the soldiers off to inspect the recent crash site, armed with two large machine guns atop the cargo hold.

"Hey there, young man!" an older gentlemen spoke humbly, trying to garner Ken's attention.

"Yes?" he said, turning his attention away from the soldiers to face the old man..

"I can sense a great power in the distance, you would be wise to leave this place whilst you can. I doubt these solders will be able to overcome what awaits them."

Ken stood awestruck for a moment, he had felt the power in the distance as well yet he was assumed it was just him being paranoid. "What do you think will happen, if that power makes its way to this town?"

"Well, many will die." he said, looking calmly down at the street. "Some will fight, but I doubt they will survive and the rest will try to escape. Its far to late for me, in my old age there is no use in trying to flee. You may be able to outrun it if you leave now though."

For some reason Ken couldn't take the situation which the old man was describing seriously. He understood, almost immediately, that whatever was going on with those ships probably wouldn't be good yet he was unsure that he could believe some old man who was preaching what sounded to Ken like the end of days.

"I'm not going to run, I've been training all my life for a chance like this. If there is a battle to be fought I will be there, even if it means my end." he replied, trying to remain calm. He wasn't a coward, surely not, but he was afraid of death in some ways. It wasn't the fact that he feared the unknown but rather that he had such pride that a demise that was anything less than a noble one in the midst of combat would simply not suffice.

"How long until we have enough force ready to move?" the larger, more physically imposing alien who had been known as many names on many planets but currently went by Zor, ask two smaller aliens wearing matching uniforms.

"Six craft have landed, two are missing and one exploded upon entry into this planets atmosphere. All together there are sixteen of us here now, ready to strike with another five possibly to arrive." the one on his left stepped forward and spoke, his voice a mixture of fear and awe.

"What do you mean missing?!" the smile that had previously been decorating Zor's menacing face turned flat. "I will tolerate no failure this time Rolan, the mishap on the previous planet cost me far too much precious time and energy."

"Of course, sir. I will continue to radio them, although it is possible that they met a similar fate as Desith." Tolar now interjected, plugging in a frequency on his radio as he spoke. He wasn't in the least bit upset that Desith's ship had exploded, he hated him for years of abuse and embarrassment; although he was somewhat annoyed that all their heavy battle armor was accompanying him into the great beyond.

"For your sake you should hope that you find out their status within the hour, or else you will be able to ask Desith yourself why he found it necessary to transport all of our valuable armor in one ship!" there was no longer even the slightest inclination of joy in his demeanor, what had seemed as a good start to conquest of a beautiful planet was with each work spoken growing ever more frustrating.

The battle armor was only of use to his soldiers, as he was intelligent or perhaps paranoid enough to always wear his, yet it could provide to be a key flaw should there be any great resistance. He doubted there would be, but he knew from experiences never to say never.

Ken and the old man had managed to avoid the masses and retreat to a small apartment that sat on the top floor of possibly the tallest building the city. There was a great window that provided a wonderful view of the main street, one that currently gave a great image of fear and reckless abandon which overtook the streets below. The small room housed a wooden table at which the old man sat and a large bookshelf which occupied most of the room. The shelves contained dozens of books on different styles of martial arts, philosophy and poetry. Ken assumed that in the old man's heyday he was some sort of fighter, although his frame certainly did not reflect that fact at present time.

"Those are my most valued treasures." he said as he watched Ken examine the bookshelf. "I have lived my life according to the ideals found in those texts, although I do regret that I was never able to use my training for the betterment of others."

"So you were a fighter?" Ken asked, taking a seat across the table. "Actually, I still don't even know your name!"

"My name is Sid, and yes I was at one point in time a martial artist. Many many years ago, although I doubt even in my prime I would be able to stop what is about to happen to all these innocent people."

"You keep speaking of gloom and doom yet there are no signs of such coming forth, why are you so sure that those crafts will spell disaster?"

"About thirty years ago I witnessed a crash landing, much like those we have seen today, in the mountains a few miles away from the city. In those times I was fit and able and I along with some friends decided to check it out." Sid reached off to a side table and lifted his cup of tea and took a sip. "We were attacked by two creatures, aliens of some type, and all my friends perished. I was knocked unconscious and awoke to find the mangled remains of my closest friends scattered about the area. The ship was gone and I returned home, never quite the same."

"So you believe that these aliens from so many years ago are back?" Ken couldn't help but smile at the idea that Earth was possibly in the midst of an alien invasion when it was just yesterday that he was complaining of boredom.

"I believe so, yes. I think that the first group was simply a scouting party, and now this is the bulk of their forces come to take over Earth!" the old man nearly dropped his tea cup as he jumped up and exclaimed his theory to Ken. "For years after my friends died I waited for the return, I trained day and night preparing myself for what was to come. It never did, until now."

Ken thought to himself for a moment, remembering the dreams that had for too long tortured him. He could almost feel a connection between the two things, a feeling that he from experience knew to listen to. If Sid was correct and there was an invasion force landing on Earth then there would be little time left, action would be crucial be it in the form of resistance or retreat. He also wondered who else might answer the call to duty, from what he had seen this town had not a single true warrior in it.

"Well then we will have to make some preparations for their arrival, assuming you are indeed correct and the soldiers dispatched to deal with the situation are overwhelmed."

Just as Sid had turned back and retrieved a large scroll which sat just out of view a large explosion could be heard just outside. Both men rushed to the window just in time to see a mushroom cloud spout upward into the air. The force from blast sent shock waves through the small town, the glass from behind which Sid and Ken looked on exploded into thousands of pieces and sent both warriors reeling back.

By the time both men had gotten back to their feet the screams could be heard. Ken was almost afraid to look over, afraid to take in the carnage which had surely been caused by that massive explosion. He crept over to the window and peeked out, pulling small pieces of glass from his arm as he looked down onto the streets.

"Dear Lord." he said as he turned to Sid, who had formed up along side of him.

The streets were almost totally covered in rubble, buildings across the path and down the main road lay damaged and destroyed. Citizens lay under rubble, bleeding onto the road enough blood to make one think that the a red tide had swept the small town. Mangled survivors and dead bodies littered the area, Ken could see arms and legs which were blown some pour souls floating in pools of blood.

"Its a miracle that this building didn't crumble, as many others did." Ken turned to Sid, able to look no longer at the devastating scene. "How many do you think survived, well survived enough to be useful in a fight?"

"A handful, perhaps five or six, although their power is nothing compared to what is about to descend on this place." his eyes remained locked on the main road. "It will be you and me, and perhaps one other who will have to fight. Hopefully the explosion alerts someone in the adjoining towns, although even if it did I suspect only one or two useful fighters would arrive and it could possibly be too late."

"So what to do now?" Ken asked, pulling yet another piece of glass from his right arm. "We need to reinforce our position I'd assume, although with firepower like that I don't know what we could even do."

"We will arm ourselves and move down the main road, towards town hall, and move survivors there. That will be where we will engage the first wave, where the battle will begin."

As the two men exited the apartment, barely able to exit through the severely damaged front door, the small of rotten and burned flesh nearly made Ken vomit. He choked back and lifted his hand in front of his face, covering his nose and mouth with the leather on the back of his gloves. Sid had put on his armor, which was old leather tightly bound with several small steel plates along the chest and shoulders, which looked as if it had been untouched for some years. It still showed scratches from battles past, a sight which gave Ken a little more reassurance that he might not have to do this all alone.

Ken reached behind his back and drew his sword, a sword of legend, and admired the blade for just a moment. Each time he used the sword he could feel the power within it, power which was matched only by its beauty. He flicked his wrist back and forth, watching the magnificent blade slice through the air.

"That is a beautiful weapon my boy, we will need it!" Sid smiled, stepping over the remains of what appeared to be a man outfitted in the same uniform as the soldiers who had previously went to battle. "We must be ever vigilant, they could come from anywhere at anytime. If they take us off guard, we will surely fall."

"I doubt that will happen, at least as long as I have anything to say about it." Ken grinned, his adrenaline pumping through his veins.

"Regardless we should move now, we must try to find any aid we can and tend to the wounded. Our best chance to survive is to move together and above all never act alone. Even with us and hopefully some others we will still be outnumbered." As the finished speaking Ken instantly felt a great power approach. Both men turned to see a massive warrior land only a few feet from them, holding a massive staff and outfitted with some type of thin armor.

"I guess it starts now!" Ken said, turning fully to face the new warrior.
