Ken had arrived in Green Ville several days ago, taking up residence with the local government in an assigned apartment that barely qualified as livable. The town had been in an uproar for the past few months, bandits from some unknown location were raiding the homes of innocent citizens, destroying and looting their farms and causing great disorder. The local law enforcement, which as far as Ken could tell was an old man and his two inept sons, could do little to stop the unwanted intrusion and more often than not turned a blind eye in hopes that their own personal land would go unharmed. Ken sat back, leaning on the chair so that its wooden back pushed gently against the wall behind him, and flicked the match off the wooden table next to him. The flame shot up on the end of the small wooden stick and Ken lifted it to his mouth, lighting the cigarette and taking a long drag before blowing the smoke out his nose and mouth.

“Excuse me sir, the mayor he wishes to have a word with you.” The youngest deputy, no older than fifteen, entered the room tentatively and then anxiously looked over at Ken across the room.

“I have not eaten yet today; I think that I should perhaps find some food before I see him. I’ll be sure to stop by his home after though, I promise.” Ken snickered and then turned away, taking another drag of his cigarette. “Shouldn’t take more than three or four hours, depending on how hungry I am.”

“Uh, he has informed me that it is urgent and that you must come immediately.” The boy now spoke with a cracked voice, visibly shaken and uneasy.
“And If I decline?” Ken said, turning back towards the boy, who was now sweating profusely.

“I...I…I have orders to take you by force.” His right arm slowly moving to the revolver on his hip, his hand trembling as it touched the wooden handle.

Ken smiled and took a final puff on his cigarette before turning yet again and grinding the cherry into the table. He then moved to his bed and picked up the top of his gi, throwing it over his large shoulders as he made his way to the door. He reached back and pulled his belt off the doorknob before finally turning back to the young deputy, moving his face to within inches of the boys.

“You know that you shouldn’t play with those things.” He said, tipping his head down in the direction of the revolver which sat idle in its holster. “That’s how people get hurt.”

The walk to the Mayors house, mansion perhaps would be a more fitting description as far as Ken was concerned, was a short one and after only a few awkward minutes of silence Ken and the boy deputy had arrived. The large stone home had a massive steel door which was opened upon their arrival and Ken was ushered in quickly, two more armed me leading him down a long hallway into the main chambers. The mayor had turned his home into a fortress over the past months, obviously putting his own self perseverance above those of his citizens. The mayor was a small, overweight man with a burley mustache and two small eyes that seemed to follow Ken wherever he went.

“Ah, there he is. My boy, how have you been?” The mayor spoke with such a condescending tone that Ken could barely tolerate it. He jumped up from his chair and walked over, putting his arms on Kens shoulders and greeted him with a large smile. “Surely such a champion of the people would join me for a drink, only the finest!”

“Very well, fill them up then.” Ken said, spinning the wooden chair around and taking a seat next to a long table in the center of the room.

The Mayor snapped his fingers and an assistant quickly appeared with two glasses and a bottle of scotch, putting them down in front of the mayor. The stout man took the bottle and lifted it, smiling as he read the label, then he lowered it and poured two glasses worth before capping the bottle and resting it on the table again. He handed the drink to Ken and then took a step back, turning his attention to a folder which rested at the edge of the table.

“My intelligence informs me that they have spotted a band of raiders approaching from the West, we assume they will arrive on the outskirts of town by day’s end and attack sometime tonight or early tomorrow morning. We have called up all able bodied man but they have little to know combat experience and there are almost no weapons here, aside from a few old revolvers that the law enforcement has and even those are more decoration than anything else.” He rifled through the pages, his eyes frantically moving up and down each page as it passed.

"They are strong, stronger than anyone we have residing here anyway. We need your help, we need you to take those guys out!" he slammed his fist against his desk and then looked up at Ken. He blushed a bit and then downed his glass of scotch, filling it quickly again. "I see you have your own weapon, and you appear to be a fit lad; exactly what the guy for the job."

Ken gulped down the scotch and then removed a cigarette from his gi, along with his silver lighter, and took a long drag. "So you've noticed my sword." he replied, smiling as he removed the weapon from his belt and held out outward as to admire it. "To be honest I don't really like you, but for the betterment of the innocent people who are already subjugated to your inept leadership and clear mismanagement of city funds I will do what I can to rid the city of these raiders."

He quickly flicked his wrist and almost in an instant had swung the sword around and sheathed it again. He took another drag of the cigarette before exhaling the smoke into several rings which seemed to dance across the room. Once finished he put it in an ashtray that sat on the Mayor's desk. "So then, I guess I should be going."

"Yes, yes. Hear my boy take this, as a symbol of my personal gratitude." the mayor reached out and took hold of the bottle of the scotch, extending it as a gesture towards Ken.

Ken took the bottle and looked down at the label, smiling before turning and exiting the room. He could hear the mayor talking almost the instant he left, but he didn't care. He wasn't doing this so a corrupt politician could keep his office, he was helping those who were unable to help themselves and that was what mattered. The mayor was a problem which could be dealt with at a more reasonable time.

Time seemed to grind to a halt as Ken waited patiently for the time to come when he would get to see how strong these bandits really were. He sat atop the water tower at the middle of the city, giving himself a great view of not only the entire town but the surrounding areas to a point. It was dark though, making it difficult to see and he was growing tired. 'A few more hours' he thought to himself, 'If they don't arrive soon I'm going to bed.'. The young warrior slid his finger down the blade of his sword, pressing just enough to penetrate the outer layer of his skin but not enough to draw blood. Boredom was an enemy that even he could not seem to overcome.

Then, just as it seemed the night would be wasted, a cloud of dust rose from the Southern part of town. It was fortunate that they had taken as much time as the did, as Ken might have missed the dust clouds had the sun not been starting to rise, and the blond haired warrior took hold the rope at the side of the tower and slide down. He jumped forward and started in a run, getting a block down before he could see the first group. He eyed the from a distance, four in the first party, and they appeared to be human. Their clothing was worn and their faces unshaven, clearly they were not of the civilized sort.

The leader noticed Ken instantly and shouted something which Ken could not make out, then turned to his posse and alerted them of his presence. Ken picked up his pace now, reaching behind his back to unsheathe the blade which he had concealed before his arrival, and jumped forward at the first man. His opponent was slow, probably also drunk, and Ken thrusted downward with his blade sending it into the mans neck just over his right shoulder. As he passed he removed the blade instantly and in a swift and fluid motion cut the throats of the two who were seemingly in shock.

"Whoa AHHHH" the final bandit turned and started to run, attempting to make it back to his friends who Ken could hear approaching.

Ken stopped for a moment and looked down at the weapon, rubbing it against the side of his pant leg as a means to remove the blood. He was unimpressed thus far with the bandits, he had taken out three without even breaking a sweat. 'No matter.' he thought to himself as he took off down the road, following the one who had momentarily escaped.

He caught up to the coward, and the rest of the group for that matter, just outside the general store. There were five total, all now armed with bats, clubs, and what appeared to be a very long knife. They also had two people, Ken assumed them to be the owners of the store, an older couple held hostage.

"Alright so here is how this is going to work, you are going to let those two go and leave this town right now." Ken pointed to the blindfolded couple who seemed to be calm, although they were undoubtedly afraid.

"And if we refuse?" the largest of the group, a dirty looking man with a long beard and the massive knife stepped forward.

"Well, you can ask your buddy what will be coming." Just as Ken spoke two rushed him, each sporting a blunt object (bat and wooden club), attempting to catch him off guard.

Ken leaned back and narrowly avoided the first attack, a wild swing by the shorter one with the bat. Unfortunately for the second by the time he arrived Ken had turned and after easily deflecting his equally wild excuse for an attack Ken drove the tip of the Hero sword deep into his chest. He then turned back and took out the first, this time with a single quick slash which opened a tremendous and gruesome gash in the mans stomach.

Upon witnessing the dispatching of the first two the others seemed shaken. The coward who Ken initially saw along with what appeared to be his friend turned and took off, kicking up dust as they ran. Ken smiled a little, expecting the bigger dude to take off as well. This was not the case.

"Well, if you think you will dispatch me as easily you are mistaken." he grumbled, taking a step forward.

Then, in a move that caught Ken totally by surprise, the man extended his hand and fired a brilliant wave of Ki which slammed into Ken's chest. The young warrior stumbled back and slid to a halt a few feet away, the Hero sword knocked from his grasp. The large challenger then rushed forward and as Ken stood slammed a knee into his stomach, instantly taking the breath from his lungs, and then caught the young hero with a right hook which again sent him to the ground.

While trying to regain himself he noticed that the two hostages had managed to escape, probably during the massacre that those goons thought would be an ambush. With that out of mind Ken focused himself, he knew that he would be able to defeat this man yet worried that those two old folks might be hurt in the process. With them gone all bets were off.

With lightening speed Ken sprung back to his feet, spun towards the oncoming oaf, and cuffed his hands before unleashing a ki wave of his own. His attack hit square and the attacker was sent flying back over a small fence on the side of the road and finally into the wall of the general store. Ken quickly regained his weapon and followed the man, walking around the broken fence and over to the man who had in the meantime gotten back to his feet.

A quick slash opened a wound down his legs, forcing him to a knee, before Ken spun the sword over his head and then came across again. He moved with such speed that he already had the sword sheathed again before the mans head bounced off the ground.

"As I expected, no challenge will be found in this place. It is time to move on." he muttered to himself as he took off into the air.
