Location: Namek Difficulty: Easy (5 post minimum) Reward: +400 zeni, +2 DP, +10 all stats, +2 Rp Credits Bonus: +15 all stats Available: Yes Description: Guru is wanting you to increase your training to its maximum, so he gives you the choice of challenging five different types of nameks on his planet. Each of them have a weakness if you can figure it out then shall be a simple task. ---- Guru had sent the young Hybrid to a village without giving Kylar very many details about it. The only thing he was sure of was the fact that Guru was testing him, said he was completing some challenge. With the knowledge that he had to make his Master proud, Kylar landed in the center of the village which Guru had instructed him to go to. Luckily Kylar was learning some of their language, and could converse with them passably as long as they didn’t talk to fast. Off to one side of the village was a large fire, with the whole village gathered around it. There was some commotion, so Kylar went over to see if maybe he was supposed to be settling a dispute for Guru. When he came into the clearing by the side of the village, the Hybrid saw that it was a sparring contest of sorts. A large Namekian man thew the challenger out of the ring, and the crowd cheered. The champion had won again. “We heard you were coming. Step up, it’s your turn.” The village Elder said, gesturing towards the rope ring that was set down on the ground. “Just have to push him out of the ring. No energy attacks!” He said wary of outsiders who may not know duelling etiquette. “Ok...” Kylar said, unsure. Setting his feet in the sand, Kylar nodded. The Elder rang a bell, and shouted something that Kylar didn’t understand, in his native language. Ignoring it, Kylar looked up to see the Namekian rushing forward, battering into him with his shoulder. Kylar stumbled backwards, catching himself before he fell over and out of the ring. As the Namekian came forward again, Kylar planted his hands on him, flipped over and tried to push the Namekian out himself. With a grunt, the Namekian stopped suddenly. No momentum maintained, just like he had hit a wall. Amazing. There had to be some way to nullify this massive Namekian’s strength and body control. Dodging another push, Kylar rolled up to his feet when he heard the thoughts. Do I really have to walk you through it? This is simple... Kylar shook his head angrily and took to his feet again. What was it that Aethos had told him about Namekian’s? Antenna! That was their weakness! The Namekian came at Kylar again, but the Hybrid was ready for it. Darting forward and diving headfirst through the legs of the Namekian, Kylar came up quicker than the warrior could turn, grabbing onto the two antenna on his foes forehead. “Gotcha!” He said as he dragged the paralyzed man towards the edge, hip throwing the Namekian onto his back and out of the ring. Suddenly, the crowd erupted into cheers again. “Nice work, Kylar. That’s challenge 1 down.” Said the Elder, stepping into the ring to raise the hand of the new winner. After several moments of cheering, Kylar felt the Elder slip something into his hand. Looking at it, it was a map to the next challenge! |

The map was not exactly professionally drawn. Kylar knew that now, due to the fact that he had tried to follow it and got a little lost. For some reason, the little bay area that he was supposed to find the next village in was empty. Standing on the rocky shore cliffs the Hybrid sighed again, looking left and right. Picking up the map, he looked closely at the map that he held. “Gosh, even the line is faint on this city, maybe it’s been moved?” Kylar muttered to himself. Closing his eyes, the Hybrid slowed his breathing, focusing on calming down to see if he could discern some meaning from the map. As he focused himself and cut out outside noise, Kylar noticed that he could... feel something from below him. Oddly intrigued, Kylar realized that it might be a buried, or hidden city. Excited, the warrior began to frantically search all around the shore, trying to find where the rocks were loose, or even gaps. Seeing a two foot high hole, he decided to give it a try and squeeze himself through. As he pulled through, Kylar broke into the light of come fires. The pathway quickly widened up to standing height, and he was able to comfortably trek into the hidden village. He was greeted by a smiling Elder. These Namekian’s have some way of talking over vast distances, obviously, because he was being expected everywhere he showed up. “Seems you have learned the lesson of not giving up, I am glad you found me.” The Elder said, placing his hand on the warriors shoulder like a fond friend. “If you follow me, your third challenge awaits.” Kylar began walking into the torch-lit caves with the Elder, “Wait, so this was a challenge? Against who?” The Elder smiled a wise smile and shook his head. “Sometimes the challenge is not against someone else. It is against ourselves. Perseverance and having trust in your abilities led you here.” The native said fondly. “You would be surprised at the amount of even Namekian’s who give up when the village just isn’t there right away.” Without another word, the two walked shoulder to shoulder into a massive cave, lit by fires all around, that seemed to be having a party held in it, judging from all the commotion, music, and people. |

Led forward, Kylar walked up some steps in the center of the party, pulled to the middle of a sand ring, circled by rope like the first one he encountered. A booming Namekian voice called out, amplified by the races mystic talents. “And arriving finally, another of Guru’s students, this one from OFF WORLD! I present, Kylar!” His announcement was met by a chorus of booing, the crowd apparently all were rooting for two more of Guru’s students, while no one was cheering for Kylar. “Fine by me, I don’t need them...” Kylar muttered as the announcer had them paired off for the first of their competitions. Evidently, they would all compete against each other, with the winner being declared the champion, and raised in status as Guru’s Prime Student. This was something that he wanted, no, he felt like he needed it, as if he were destined to get it. To prove to himself, Guru, and everyone watching here that he could be the best. Kylar’s first opponent was Ciphan, and the two were squared off in the ring first, with the other two moving away. The announcer spoke again, explaining the rules. “These first two matches will be as the first, no energy attacks, whoever steps out of the circle first loses.” And as they stood, the ground immediately outside the circle, what was a raised platform, rose, giving the circle of rope a 6” lower elevation than the surrounding area. “Fighters... BEGIN!” Springing forward, Kylar was slightly disheartened by the crowd, everyone seemed to be Ciphan fans, he looked to be the favourite to win the tournament. And he seemed to know it, looking smug and cockily walking across the ring waving at his adoring fans all over. Time to shut this crowd up... Aethos’ thoughts rang in his ears, and Kylar could not help but agree with them. Taken off guard by the quick attack, Kylar was blindsided by a quick left hook, and it was all he could do to brace himself for the right uppercut to the body that sent him stumbling back. Regaining control of his movement he stopped himself, and looked up to see Ciphan flashing through the air, aiming a spinning kick at the torso of the Hybrid. Crossing his arms, Kylar caught the blow, managing to redirect it so that he spun off to the side, away from Ciphan, instead of out of the ring. The two warriors squared off, circling slightly as they stared into each other’s eyes from across the ring. The already growing welt on his face gave the information he needed; this Namekian was actually faster and stronger than him. He’d have to find some way other than just brute force to beat him. Across the ring, however, Ciphan seemed completely at ease, even smirking a little as he waved to the crowd, making funny gestures at his opponent. |

With Ciphan playing it up to the crowd, Kylar could feel himself get discouraged when he had no one on his side. That’s when he realized that maybe he could get some people on his side, after all, people loved rooting for the underdog sometimes. So he decided to act it up, just like his opponent. Gesturing wildly, Kylar began inching forward, acting like Ciphan was afraid to engage in the fight with him. The crowd noticed in seconds, and within a minute were shouting at him to take out the off-worlder. With a smile, Kylar dodged to the side, avoiding the attack that Ciphan had hazardously launched. Capitalizing on the huge opening, the Hybrid kicked the native hard in the leg, then stepped forward and kneed the warrior in the head, sending him flying back to the edge of the stage. The crowd cheered loudly for Kylar, who stood calmly, flexing his muscles. Dusting off imaginary dust from his shoulders, the crowd erupted into laughter, which only served to anger Ciphan more. The Namekian rushed headfirst towards Kylar. Looking casually away, Kylar did not move until the split second before he would be struck and surely tossed from the ring. Dropping straight down onto his back faster than the eyes of the crowd could follow, he struck a pose, his body catching the toes of his opponent’s feet. Ciphan flew headfirst into the sand, bouncing and landing half outside the circle, disqualified. Kylar raised his hands triumphantly as the crowd began to chant his name. The Elder raised his hand, officially making him the champion and led him to a tent away from the stage. “So, Kylar, what did you learn there?” Kylar dropped the act, and his face turned serious. “Pride can be a beneficial feeling, and a dangerous one. Ciphan was proud, and when I got some people rooting for me, he felt like he had to prove himself, and became more reckless.” He smiled and spread his hands, gesturing at himself. “And I learned that even when people don’t believe in me, as long as I believe in myself, I can win.” He felt silly saying it, but it was the truth, no matter how ‘after-school special’ it sounded. The Elder smiled widely. “Guru has prepared you well, it seems. I shall return for the final match.” Kylar sat, a little physically tired, but bouncing in excitement for the culmination of his task. |

The next fight took longer, though Kylar’s sense of time could be skewed due to him being so excited. Finally he heard movement outside of his tent, the flaps parted by, not the Elder that initially put him here, but another younger Namek native. Without speaking a word, Kylar rose, and followed the silent guardian back towards the ring. Standing atop the circle, waiting for his opponent to join him was a strong, chiselled Namekian staring down. Intimidating, but Kylar knew that he could win this, Guru believed in him. And with the belief of him, Kylar could do anything. Floating into the ring serenely, the Hybrid knew it was time to show what he had learned. The announcer had barely finished the last syllable of “Begin!” when Kylar began his assault. A flurry of fists, feet and elbows flew at the Namekian, the ultimate goal to push the fighter towards the edge of the ring. As soon as the wily Namekian got close to the edge, however, he nimbly danced away, dodging Kylar’s attacks easily as he did so. For minutes the fight went on, with Kylar pressing forward the entire time, eventually beginning to slow down as he began to tire. There was never a mention of rounds or anything of that sort, he was going to fight straight until someone lost, all that exertion for no result is not a smart tactic, he realized, too late. A misstep and that was all the Namekian needed to capitalize on, grabbing onto a thrown punch, stepping forward and hip tossing Kylar off to the side of the ring. The crowd cheered even as Kylar stood up, confused but ready to fight. The referee was reaching for the Namekian’s hand to announce the winner and Kylar did not know how he lost. Looking down, he saw it finally. The heel of his left foot had landed just outside the ring, losing him the match. Feelings of self-doubt and sadness rained down on him. The Elder who brought him here slowly approached. “So, do you understand the lesson here?” He asked, studying the sad Hybrid’s face. Kylar nodded but the Elder did not seem to believe him. “Well, what was it?” He asked patiently. Kylar looked up from his hands, clearly sad at the loss. “Fate? Chance? Luck? Destiny?” He asked, raising his eyebrow. “Whatever you want to call it, happens. And sometimes it’s like no matter what you do, you’re wrong, because that’s just what happens.” The Elder smiled, patting the shoulder of the sad warrior. “It would be easier to know that a stronger warrior, a better warrior beat you. Yes? Of course. But sometimes situations add up and things out of our control must happen. No one can really teach you to roll with what happens, you need to learn by experiencing.” Kylar nodded his head, grasping the Namekian’s hand. As he got to his feet he could not help but think of how good it would feel to win this tournament the next time that it happened. “So, master.” He asked, breaking into a smile. “How long do I have to wait before this tournament rolls around again?” Fin. |
