Difficulty: Easy Description: A old and wise Namekian has grown ill and cannot fish for his family. His family will starve without him. He will pay you for the fish if you fish for one week for him. Reward: +400 zeni, +2 DP, +10 all stats, +2 Rp Credits Bonus: +100 zeni, +1 Alignment Available: Always ----- Kylar was meditating in his chambers underneath Guru’s palace. Encountering his double was a disconcerting experience, and one that he really wished he could just forget. But he knew that history, if unknown, was doomed to repeat itself, he could never forget just what it is he could become; a destructive force that just wanted to kill. But he wasn’t going to be like that, not with both himself and Aethos steering him down the moral path. It was a comforting thought that he could count on a friend that was always with him to try to stay on the right path. Plus, having Guru as his master has helped him quite a bit, giving him the advice and guidance he needed to become the best person he could. A knock at the open doorframe to his small living area drew Kylar from the calmness of his mind, back into the real world. One of Guru’s guards, Piral, was standing at the door, looking down on the Hybrid sitting cross-legged on the floor. “Guru wishes to speak with you, pale one. I suggest you finish up and head upstairs.” The Namekian left curtly. Kylar couldn’t help but feel like he was unwanted by everyone he met on this world, everyone but Guru at least. As he walked up the stairs, Kylar heard nothing from Guru’s throne room. Usually when he was called to an audience, there was someone else in the chamber, and he was sent to deal with that problem. Maybe he was going to be sent on some other kind of mission, a more important one? Excited, Kylar breached the chamber doors, entering and standing silently off to the side, in Guru’s line of sight for whenever his great master was ready to speak to him. “Ah, Kylar, glad you’re finally here. I have a new mission for you.” Guru said loudly, his deep voice bringing Kylar to attention as fast as an electric shock. “We’re ready sir, for anything.” The Hybrid said, smiling and eager to prove himself. |

Guru smiled at his eager young apprentice. “I know this is not the most exciting sounding thing for you to do, but you are here to learn and grow, as a fighter and a person.” Guru began, causing Kylar’s heart to drop, he had been hoping that it would be a more exciting job than his last ones, not less. But Guru pressed on, “The fisherman for a very small village has fallen ill, and cannot complete his duties. No one else in town can drop what they are doing in order to take over his fishing duties, but they requested that I send someone to do so for them.” Kylar frowned, looking from his master, to the smirking bodyguards off to the side, then back up to Guru. “Sir, can they not get a nearby village to aid them?” He asked, hoping that Guru would not take offense to the fact that he did not really wish to participate in a mere... fishing event. Guru shook his head slowly, “They are further north than most villages, fairly isolated. It is very hard to transport goods up there, and even if it were not, you know how hard pressed some villages can be to feed themselves? It would mean a lot to the Namekian community for you to do this, Kylar. I realize your potential is greater than this, but we can call this a lesson in humility.” Guru stopped, but continued on after a moment upon seeing Kylar’s face. “You have been blessed with a gift, not everyone is as powerful as you, and not everyone of some races can even access their Ki. You should consider yourself lucky, and see this as working for a few days in a job that is different than one you chose. Walking a mile in someone else’s shoes can be an uplifting experience.” Kylar knew what Guru said was true, so he nodded, trying hard to keep the disappointment from his face. “Yes, Master.” He said, loud enough to be heard. “So, where exactly is this village we are heading to?” |

Kylar shook his head ruefully as he readjusted the borrowed heavy hide clothing once more. At the northern peaks of Namek it may not be as icy as some planets he had visited, but it was cold compared to the rest of it, the heat from the stars not warming it near as much as towards the center of the planet. Flying in this windy weather was no treat at all, either. Alright, let’s find this village and catch us some fish fast, we should be able to get out of here in a day or two, rather than some weeks. Kylar thought to himself as he approached the village cautiously. Word may not have arrived yet that Guru was sending one of his off-world wards, rather than a familiar Namekian face, and he did not wish to be attacked, or to scare anyone. Oh calm down, you’re not that scary looking. Aethos’ voice echoed inside his head, causing him to smile. You’ll be lucky if they even think you have the capacity to fish, the way some of these natives have treated us. Kylar laughed aloud at the idea, but it was very true, these green-skinned aliens did not seem very trusting of him, even though Guru was the one sending him. Oh well, another village another test of his patience. As he walked towards the center of the village, Kylar noticed that the town seemed positively bustling from the noise, yet no one was to be seen. As he passed an open blacksmith, the strong Namekian who was pounding out a set of armour raised his eyebrows, looking at the stranger. “Guru send you?” Was the simple question, quick and to the point. Kylar nodded, “Yes, we were sent to gather up some fish for your village?” He answered, somewhat uncertain. The Namekian nodded, and gestured for him to follow, walking briskly out of the hot workshop, and towards a small pond just outside the village. |

“Alright, so I guess you can fish? Good, all you have to do is catch some fish and transfer them to here.” The Namekian looked at the outsider with a shrug. “Easier for us to get the food we need out of here than fish in the ocean, I’m sure you understand.” Kylar nodded, it made sense, this way they could catch as many fish as they could, rather than simply fishing enough for a day or two’s requirements. With a quick look at the village, Kylar calculated. “There’s about... seven houses here?” He asked, wondering how many fish to catch. As his supervisor nodded, Kylar smiled and lifted himself off the ground, floating and looking around. “That’s the boat I can take, right?” The Namekian nodded, and after making sure that Kylar didn’t need any more help, he went back to his work in the forge. Now it was all up to Kylar, though the Hybrid already felt bored with the task. As he climbed in the boat, drifting out into the ocean, he mindlessly began to paddle away from shore, heading towards a small island that he could see off in the distance. Throughout the boat were supplies to fish: multiple rods, buckets and nets, and chains to hook the live fish on to transport them back to the pond on the main-land. As the small boat ran aground on the island, Kylar stepped out, grabbing a net and pole and walking to the edge of a rocky outcropping. Casting the line in, Kylar began to slowly reel the lure back, watching the water like a hawk for any movement that would indicate a fish. The minutes blended together, and the next thing he knew, a few hours had passed, and Kylar had only managed to catch a dozen food-sized fish. This is ridiculously relaxing, you know. But looks like we’re going to be at it for a while. He could feel Aethos agreeing with him, and continued casting his lines out. |

His first day, Kylar manage to catch enough fish to feed the village for the next couple days. As he was preparing in the morning to head out again, the Hybrid knocked softly on the door of the fisherman that he was temporarily replacing. A weak voice called for him to come in, and he did so, easily fitting into the comfortable Namekian home. “Ah, hello. I assume you are the one Guru has sent to replace me for this week?” Asked the frail looking Namekian laying in bed. Kylar nodded, smiling at the quaint house. “We just wanted to meet you. We must say, fishing is much more enjoyable than we had guessed at first. It is very... relaxing.” He admitted to the sick Namekian. The Namekian laughed, coughing. “Oh yeah, I love my job, always time to reflect.” He finally got out, after clearing his throat. The two of them spoke, joked, and enjoyed each other’s company for just under an hour, before the Namekian fell asleep on his comfortable bed. Kylar took this as his time to leave, and exited the dwelling. We’ve been doing this very... Normally. How about we show this village how someone with our power fishes? Aethos thought, bored. Kylar agreed, as much as he appreciated the time it took to fish, and the time he got to reflect on his training, he could not help but feel like it was... incredibly boring after a while. Zooming through the air to the boat, he picked it up, placing everything inside it on the ground, and dragging it behind him with one hand, through the air. This is going to be interesting. Kylar thought to himself as he dipped the boat in the water, filling it almost the entire way, leaving six inches at the top so that the fish would not be able to simply flop out easily. Diving headfirst into the water, the Hybrid propelled himself through with incredible speed, snatching the largest fish from schools, literally shoving them into his coat in order to tangle them and ensure they could not get away. |

Every three or four minutes, Kylar surfaced, emptying his pockets, sleeves, and even pant legs into the boat. Eels, clams, fish, snakes and prawns fell into the boat, swimming around in circles trying to escape their new home. This went on for hours, until the boat was so full that Kylar could barely lift it. Summoning his ki-enhanced strength, the Hybrid hoisted the small craft above his head, and set off for the village. After he dumped the contents into the small pond, Kylar flipped the little boat over onto the forge, forming a little tent for himself. He collapsed, exhausted with his days work, and fell asleep instantly. Kylar awoke some time later to the sound of amazement outside his makeshift dwelling. “It... it’s full?” “That’s impossible!” “He’s only been fishing for a couple days!” The voices brought a smile to the young warriors face. As he stepped outside into the morning sunlight, he could see the village preparing breakfast of the fish he caught. The blacksmith Namekian stepped up to Kylar, clapping him on the shoulder with a huge smile on his face. “You’ve filled the pond for the first time in years. We cannot thank you enough.” He began, when Kylar cut him off. “I was just doing what I know the other fisherman would, if he could.” Kylar said honestly. “We all have gifts. I may not be able to actually fish very well, or shape things with my hands like you. But Guru has taught me to adapt my strengths to cover my weaknesses. To do anything less than my best would be an insult.” The blacksmith nodded, understanding the mindset of this stranger. He gestured towards the crackling fire that the food was cooking over. “Come then. We will show you a true feast, since you have helped us so much, before you head back down south. Then you can tell those southerners how real Namekian’s eat!” He said with a laugh, as the two walked towards the group. 2043/1800 words |
