The people he met in the northern reaches of Namek were much friendlier, though compared to how some of the southern Namekian’s treated him that wasn’t hard. At worst, they started out treating him with indifference, and by the end of it, they were all acting as if he had been a part of their village for much longer than his short stay. The harder climate up there seemed to draw people together much more readily than the more populated regions. But that was another day, now Kylar was stressed with the fact that Guru was calling on him yet again, for some task that he had no idea of. Waiting outside the Elder’s palace, he had all the time in the world to worry about what hardships he might be forced to endure, or even what boring tasks he might have to participate in, he had no real idea of what to expect. Trainee after trainee were receiving their assignments ahead of him, and a half dozen or so were waiting outside the entrance with him, just talking and anticipating when their name would be called by the bodyguards. “Some of these things that Guru has gotten me to do have seemed like... bullshit, to say the least.” One of the younger pupils complained, and a couple of the people around him shrugged. “Come on, other than strength, what’s plowing a field going to get me? Nothing!” Kylar smiled up from his shady spot. “Maybe a job, you don’t sound like you’re cut out to be an elite warrior, with an attitude like that.” He said lazily, to a chorus of laughter from the other, less impatient pupils. A look of rage came over the Namekian warriors face and he opened his mouth to retort. “Calm down, I’m sure you’re a top notch fighter. I’m just saying it takes more than fighting, more than physical strength to be a warrior. And even more to be a leader. Guru’s not teaching us to fight, kiddo, he’s teaching us how to act.” Agreement came from some of the surrounding people, though laughter rang in his own head. Just can’t help but try to play the philosopher eh? Asked the silent demon inside him. A smile spread across Kylar’s face, he did indeed like just sitting around and talking with people. And Guru was giving him ample time to do that while he recovered from some of the more dangerous missions he was sent on. The Namekian scoffed at him, and sat back down, looking sullen. “But we do not know you, maybe Guru just thinks you are too weak to be trusted with his real tasks. We have personally had our fair share of dangerous exploits under Master Guru.” The Namekian shot to his feet, angry and stalking towards his fellow pupil. Just as he did, as Kylar looked on with a bored expression, not willing to fight a fellow trainee, one of the bodyguards stepped out of the palace, alongside another pupil who shot into the air off on his own journey. As he called his name, Kylar sighed, “Well thank goodness for that, we were afraid we might have to deal with your anger.” He said in a sarcastic stage whisper. To the anger of the Namekian, but amusement of the rest of the pupils, Kylar got up and jogged over to the bodyguard. Nodding to the man, recognizing him as one who often wakes the Hybrid up in the morning, Kylar proceeded into the palace and stopped a respectful distance from Master Guru. “Kylar, you have trained with me for some weeks now, carrying out my requests and commands without complaint.” Guru began, and Kylar could tell that this was the start of something important. “There’s a task that I set upon my students every so often, and that is what I am doing to the worthy ones today. I charge you with going to the four largest villages on Namek, and competing in an honourable duel with the village guardian. If you can do this, you will show that you are worthy for the next level of training, and we can begin shaping you into the warrior that you wish to become.” Kylar’s face gave away his excitement, and Guru smiled, “I trust you accept this challenge?” Kylar beamed, “Of course sir. I am willing and able to do anything you set before me.” The Hybrid was astounded by his good luck, to have a Master like Guru who believed he was worthy to take into more intensive training was a great honor. “Excellent, I thought you would do that. Speak with one of my guards and they will direct you towards the first village. Oh, and Kylar?” Guru said as Kylar was bowing and turning to leave. “Try not to antagonize my other pupils, I believe you remember when you were in their shoes?” And Kylar blushed, mumbling apologies as he took his leave of the chuckling Elder. |

The village wasn’t far, and Kylar could still see the large spire that was Guru’s palace as he landed outside the village, making his way into it on foot. It seemed that Guru had told the Guardians that his students would be coming by, as there was a burly Namekian waiting for the Hybrid. “Saw you approaching. Follow me.” He said softly, turning on his heel and marching into the heart of the village, leaving Kylar to chase after him. The Namekian led Kylar to a gym, of all things, that was nearly the size of the palace Guru and his students lived in. Training inside were eight or nine Namekian’s, all dressed in a similar manner to Guru’s bodyguards. It struck Kylar eventually that he was standing where the Guardians were trained for combat. “Whoa...” He muttered to himself, as he looked around at the bare training facility, and the sweating, exhausted looking Namekians. Standing in the corner of the gym was a shorter than average Namekian, covered in sweat but still training hard, clearly in better shape than the others who were there. He then clapped his hands, eyes darting over to Kylar and his escort, and all activity came to an abrupt end, each of the students snapping to attention and facing the shorter man. “Alright, that’s all for the day. Practice in your off-time.” He said simply, and the group bowed as one, exiting the building in a quick and efficient manner. Kylar stood still, waiting for someone to tell him what was happening. He did not have to wait long, however, as after a short drink and wiping himself down with a nearby towel, the short Namekian walked right up to the Hybrid, extending his hand. “Kylar, yes?” He asked as the two shook hands. “Master Guru has told me to expect you. I am Ione, Guardian of this section of Namek. It would appear that I am supposed to test your mettle?” The Namekian said with a grin, and Kylar realized that the Guardian was looking forward to this just as much as he was. “So, now is as good a time as any, right?” And with those simple words, the Guardian stepped backwards, and Kylar noticed an outline on the dirt floor. A circle that was about twenty feet across was at one end of the gym, and Ione stopped on one side of it, as Kylar made his way to the opposite side. “No ki, just us.” Kylar muttered to himself, hoping that this fight would go his way. The burly Namekian that Kylar had initially taken for the Guardian was standing referee, and called for the match to begin in Namekian, and all thought was pushed from Kylar’s head as he sank into the fight. |

One thing that training had prepared Kylar for was fighting someone who was faster than himself. Guru had taught him to trust his instincts, and over the weeks that he had been training, Kylar was much better at taking advantage of split second openings that he saw. This proved to be an advantage, due to Ione’s blinding speed. The Namekian seemed to be everywhere at once, changing levels with his attacks and firing punches and kicks targeting the Hybrid’s legs up to his head. The flurry of movement caused Kylar to dance backwards, circling away from his opponent, unable to stop blocking to mount any offensive moves of his own. Ione was silent in the exchange, his breathing being obviously controlled, though his forehead was furrowed with concentration and exertion. Weaving his torso down low, Kylar dodged a punch and did exactly what he was hoping. Ione fired a kick at the ducking warrior, but since it was such an obvious move, Kylar was prepared. Catching it, the Hybrid latched onto it with an iron grip; if he could maintain contact like this he would negate the speed advantage that his opponent had. Though he sacrificed one arm for this effort, Ione now only had one leg to stand on, and Kylar could push and pull it, giving himself another defensive mechanism. The fight changed dramatically, since the Guardian was now limited to only hand techniques, as kicking with his other leg was incredibly risky, especially without the use of Ki to fall back on. Kylar was using the leg to jerk the punches around, and hammer into the Namekian with his own blows, slowly but surely causing damage to Ione, both physically and mentally. Kylar read in his face the frustration building, and he continued to kick and punch at the torso and head of the Namekian, driving into him all the while, forcing the one-legged Guardian to hop further from the center of the ring. As he threw out a vicious leg kick, Kylar pulled on the leg that he was holding on to. The result was the Namekian’s feet leaving the ground as he went perpendicular. Even as he extended his arms to brace his fall, Kylar released the leg, throwing a devastating hook from the previously tied up arm, and following it with a straight left hand that bore the airborne Namekian into the ground. Not one to waste an opportunity, Kylar dove forward, landing heavily with a knee in the Guardian’s stomach, and sliding on top of him, pinning him to the floor and preparing to rain blows down from his dominant position. As he raised his hand for the first punch he heard the harsh bark of a command in Namekian: the burly judge was stopping the bout. As he got off his opponent, the pain that always came after fighting flooded into Kylar’s senses. His forearms were already bruising, and he could feel a solid welt on his left thigh, but he had won. Ione, on the other hand, was bleeding from various cuts on his face, and the leg that had been his sole support looked like it was on the verge of breaking, from the way he was limping. But the bright look in his eyes, and huge smile on his face told Kylar that Ione would have willingly gone all the way, fighting until unconsciousness. “Ah, Kylar, you are a true warrior. I’ll pay attention next time, not let you catch that leg quite so easily!” The Namekian said, amazingly he didn’t even sound out of breath. Kylar smiled, and shook hands with the Guardian. “So, how about after your little test, you come back to train with me, you could definitely use an increase in your speed, and I think I could help.” Kylar was taken aback. He, an off-worlder, had just defeated a Guardian in an honourable duel, and the humble Namekian was simply eager to have a worthy training partner around. Blushing slightly, Kylar nodded eagerly. “Once we’re done here, you can bet you’ll see us again!” He said excitedly. As it was still early in the day, Kylar was invited back to Ione’s house for some lunch and conversation, and he eagerly accepted, hoping to be able to pick the brain of the lightning-fast Namekian on how he could improve his technique. |

Mid-afternoon, and already feeling beaten, Kylar had the directions to the next village that housed a Guardian. Though they weren’t so much directions as a heading, they were easy enough to follow, as he rocketed through the sky towards the village. This one was slightly different, and seemed to be situated on the edge of a forest, with a fast moving river cutting down one side of it. Again he was greeted by a large Namekian, though this one wore similar clothes to the last Guardian, so Kylar assumed that he was the one that he would have to fight. “Looks like you’ve had your first test already.” Said the gravelly-voiced Guardian, smiling, “Seem to be coming out of it alright. You’ve eaten right?” He paused and Kylar nodded his head, opening his mouth to reply but he was cut off as the warrior continued. “Excellent, wouldn’t want you to be at a disadvantage for this one, follow me.” Kylar followed the Guardian to the river, and though there were no rapids directly around the town, he could hear the churning water that was a dead giveaway, this river was swift and relentless. Towards the forest there were many of the green-skinned people cutting down trees with only their fists and feet, carrying the heavy loads towards one building that Kylar presumed was where said wood would be used. The Namek Guardian stopped on the village side of the river and nodded towards the group. “My students, I am Guardian Holow. As a first stage in your test, I need you to cut down one of those logs, and bring it over here. Don’t worry, the fun part starts after.” He nodded towards the students who were doing so. “Remember, don’t use your Ki for this either, physical tests.” So Kylar nodded, and with a running leap, landed on the far side of the twenty foot river with a roll, popping up to his feet and jogging towards the forest. The Namekian’s were choosing the trees that they cut carefully, and after moments, Kylar could see that they were picking only ones that were over three feet in diameter, ensuring that the forest would have healthy young trees, and they were not simply clear-cutting it. So, taking note of that, the Hybrid warrior weaved through the forest, looking for the tree that would be the result of this test. It took only minutes before he found one he liked, but Kylar was excited for it. Almost four feet thick, this tree was quite hefty indeed. Squaring his shoulders to it, he sunk into a fighting stance, firing a kick, then another, then another, into the trunk of the tree. Conditioned though his legs were, the earlier sparring match was combining with his to give him quite the pains. He switched legs, hammering at the same part of a tree, denting the mighty trunk, and chipping away wood with the force. When he had a sizeable notch out of it, he moved to the other side. Taking deep cleansing breaths, with every exhale he slammed his elbow, or fist, or palm into the tree, pushing it and causing it to lean. Suddenly, it started to fall. “Oh shi-“ He said as he realized that he was knocking a tree towards people. “Um, TIMBER!” He yelled, and he could hear some people moving through the trees as the stepped out of the way of his falling target. Luckily for him, the trees in this part of Namek were thick, but not tall, with the forest staying uniform thirty or so feet high. As he wrapped his arms around the huge trunk, he began hauling it, feeling the strain in his back and legs as he dragged hundreds of pounds of tree to the river bank. When he got to the shore, Holow was waiting for him on the same side of the river as him. With a smile on his face, the Guardian grabbed the other end of the large tree trunk, and the two of them hoisted it onto their shoulders. “Alright, bring it up that hill, that’s where my students are set up.” The Guardian said as the two of them carried the tree to where there were students sitting on either side of the river. With some quick words in Namekian, two of the students set to the task of sheering off the branches, but leaving the bark on, making for a perfectly straight tree. After the branches were gone, the tree was cut down to size, just over twelve feet long, they slipped it into the water and joined their fellows in seated positions. Holow beamed at his charges, then turned back to Kylar. “Alright, they will be holding the tree in place with telekinesis, but the water is still going to rotate it. I’ll give you a couple hours to get used to this.” And he set off back down the hill leaving Kylar confused. “Get used to it? Used to what, Guardian?” He asked, which solicited laughter from both Holow and his students. “Standing on it, of course. At sundown you and I will be fighting on top of that log in the river. First one to fall off it, into the water or onto the shore, loses.” Kylar’s eyes shot wide in amazement, which brought forth even more guffaw’s from the audience. “Don’t worry, Kylar, you’ve got a few hours to practice, I’ll be back.” And he left, leaving the Hybrid to wonder what he did to deserve an odd fight like this. Balancing on a log in a turbulent river, while it spun underneath him, nature and his opponent trying to throw him off... The more he thought of it, the more fun it sounded like it would end up being, actually. Not one to waste time, he quickly hopped onto the log, and just as quickly found himself in the river, fighting the current to get back to the shore. “Of course it can’t be that easy...” He muttered to himself as he dragged himself out of the water, ready to attempt more. |

The sun was setting, and lucky for him, Kylar had gotten a hang of the log rolling techniques enough that the students were no longer laughing at him, or fishing him out of the river. With the sun setting, there was a peaceful air around the village as Holow climbed back up the hill to confront Kylar. “See, it’s not so bad.” The cheerful Namekian said as he saw Kylar practicing kicks and punches along the spinning log. A smile on his face, though his hair was completely messed up by the water, the Hybrid nodded his head. “We think that we have figured this out.” Kylar said, nodding to the Guardian. Silent, but beaming, Holow leapt lightly onto the opposite side of the log as Kylar and raised an eyebrow at him. “Ready.” The warrior said, looking at the Guardian. Holow nodded, and the two combatants stepped forward carefully, each of them taking small steps to counteract the log as it tried to spin, but their slight movements stopped it’s rotation. As they met in the middle, Holow threw out a kick at Kylar’s head, causing the challenger to duck it, and give a little hop as the momentum of the kick got the log to spin a little. Holow put his foot back down and leapt backwards easily, it was clear that the Guardian was at ease on these, he had been a lumberjack for years in addition to training his balance on them daily. Holow managed to adapt his fighting to the moving, spinning log without relying on his inner power, but Kylar had to keep reminding himself not to tap into his Ki to steady himself the easy way. You can do this... He thought to himself as he came forward, inching past the center of the log, and causing it to tip a bit more and more as he walked. His left hand out straight towards Holow, he was using it to judge range. As the Guardian swatted his hand down, and spinning the Hybrid slightly, Kylar lashed out with a kick, catching the Namekian above the knee. A solid THWACK sounded and the students gasped as their instructor began to teeter backwards. However, the experienced Guardian was too adept at maintaining his balance to be caught by such a trick, but Kylar wasn’t done yet. As he closed the gap so that the two were right beside each other, the Hybrid threw a series of punches and elbows, all while sinking lowing, keeping his center of gravity low. The pairs feet were getting wet now, the log was so lopsided, and both were constantly shuffling their feet as the log began to spin and pick up speed. Laughing, Holow leapt up and over Kylar, coming down for a light landing on the log. But Kylar was having none of that, and began to spin the log the opposite way, as fast as possible, as he shuffled towards where the Guardian would land. Holow landed, and was off balance for a second before he regained his balance, but Kylar again was right in his face, pushing him towards the edge of the log with attacks. As the Namekian neared the edge he grabbed onto one of Kylar’s punches, throwing him behind him, towards the water, and spinning back towards the center of the log. Kylar fell forwards, grabbing onto the edge of the log and stopping himself, for a split second looking like a flag in the wind as he pulled himself back from almost parallel to the water. Holow raised an eyebrow, “Impressive.” was all he said before closing the gap and trying to pressure Kylar off balance. It worked, and Kylar moved towards the edge slowly, then suddenly lunged forward, taking a pair of strikes square in the face. The tackle looked ridiculous, as both would lose if they both went in the water. Kylar hit Holow with his fists in his shoulders, grabbing on, then with his knees into his stomach. The Namekian fell backwards winded, towards the water. Just as Holow’s back touched the water, Kylar sprang up, shooting the Guardian down to the bottom of the river, and flipping himself backwards onto the log. He misjudged and couldn’t correct without using his Ki and forfeiting, so he slammed back first into the log. He managed to flail out, and somehow wrap his arms around it, though the spinning dragged him under once... twice... three times before he was able to get back on top of the log, walking to counteract the spin. Holow burst out of the water, floating above the river, laughing. The students who were holding onto the log with telekinesis began to laugh as well, and let go of the log without warning. Suddenly Kylar was headed down river, underneath Holow. Slipping as the log spun, it entered rapids and Kylar began to frantically try to stabilize himself before he heard Holow. “You’ve won, no need to not use Ki anymore!” The Guardian said between laughs, watching Kylar struggle to stay on top. Kylar had forgotten all about that, and simply lifted off the log as it crashed down the river. “Oh yeah...” He said, soliciting yet more riotous laughter from the crowd. As he joined Holow and his students at the side of the river, the two dripping wet warriors clasped hands. “Well that’s something I hadn’t encountered before.” The Guardian said, as Kylar smiled appreciatively. “Now come, we’ll eat, get you into some warm, dry clothes, and you can sleep here tonight. They’ll expect you tomorrow at the next village, just after breakfast.” And Kylar agreed. This was a life that he could really get used to, going around, competing and eating and making merry. If only life could always be this much fun, he couldn’t help but feel like Holow’s laughter was infectious as he started to laugh to, as the students talked of the match they just witnessed. |

Kylar awoke feeling rested and, thanks to his quick healing biology, even stronger and more able than before the trials of the day before. He was halfway done Guru’s task, and all he had to do was defeat the next two Guardians, and Guru would be willing to give him even more exciting and interesting tasks. Holow gave him directions to the next testing ground, which was simply to follow the river until it turned into a water fall. Apparently from there, it would be easy to find the village the next Guardian resided in. So, leaving with some bread and smoked meat, Kylar started off on his journey. The trip took several hours, but luckily he was blessed with Aethos inside his head as well, and the two managed to keep each other company, even though Aethos was a travelling being by nature and was already growing weary of Namek after only a month on it. The trip went by quick enough, with conversation, and Kylar found himself floating over the top of a waterfall, scanning all directions trying to find the Namekian village. Having previously encountered a hidden village, he guessed that this one was too. Knowing a village was around, however, was a great boon in finding it, and he guessed that it was behind the waterfall, as that would provide some measure of security for them with little work. Floating down, he found he was right. Through the cascading water, Kylar found a bustling village, and as he landed, he could see the villagers waving goodbye to another of Guru’s students, this one looking much less happy than Kylar. Suddenly the realization that he could fail this test struck him, and the Hybrid redoubled his resolve to exceed expectations. Standing at the head of the crowd was the Guardian that Kylar was to face next, arms crossed and looking disapprovingly at the approaching apparent Saiyan. “Hm, Saiyan.” The Guardian said, spitting the word out like a bad taste. “I’m surprised Guru would allow one of your bloodthirsty race to take this trial. I am Menai, and your journey ends at this stop.” A quick enough introduction, and Kylar could tell that the rest of the villagers were no bigger fans of his race than the Guardian. The whole crowd walked off to the side as Kylar settled to the ground in front of the Namekian. “Well, we’ll just have to prove you wrong.” He said calmly, not wanting to give the Guardian a reason to attack him in truth. Menai walked towards the water pouring down from the cliffs above, ignoring Kylar’s words. “We fight under the falls, on the rocks. Step onto dry land, or fall to the lake below, and you lose. Easy enough for your monkey brain to understand, right?” Kylar responded by shedding his shirt, stepping onto the rocks first. The icy water hit hard, but his mental resolve was tough enough to block out even the most painful tortures, let alone this simple shower. “Right.” He said, locking eyes with the Guardian. He didn’t want to make an enemy, but this man was making it difficult to see him as anything but that. The Namekian rubbed his hands together, eagerly stepping into the chilling downpour as the village watched on. “I’m going to enjoy throwing you down the falls.” He growled savagely, throwing himself towards Kylar recklessly. |

Menai seemed to be a much more straight forward fighter than the other Namekian’s, who seemed like they were teaching Kylar aspects of his own skills while they tested him. Menai simply wanted to hurt the Hybrid. With a rush of attacks, the fury that Kylar felt in the assault was one that the Guardian must have been harbouring towards his race for some time. Kylar could not blame the Namekian for his rage at being given the task of testing a Saiyan, the others of his race had attacked pretty much everyone else in the known universe, hell, even in the Next Dimension in some cases. So Kylar weathered the attacks, blocking with forearms and shins as he balanced himself on the slick rocks, moving around quite a bit so that Menai was not pushing him back out of the waterfall. The lack of an offense seemed to infuriate the Namekian, his face growing angrier and angrier as Kylar patiently absorbed attacks, waiting for the proper time to strike. As Kylar caught a right on his bicep, he ducked low, shooting in for a takedown and bearing the Namekian to the rocks with his weight. Slowly, the Hybrid used short punches and elbows to sneak past the defence of the Guardian, climbing up to his knees. Raining fists down, the Namekian tried to cover his head but Kylar simply began to hit his unprotected torso, switching from chest to side to face shots seemingly at random, but always able to pinpoint the spot that was not defended. Anger welled in Menai’s face as welts and cuts blossomed, but still the Namekian would not give up. Bucking and turning, he finally managed to throw Kylar off balance enough to scramble out from under him. As Kylar was climbing to his feet the Guardian mule kicked backwards, catching Kylar in the jaw and sending him sprawling and sliding to the edge of the waterfall. Taking this advantage, Menai sprinted to him, sliding foot first into the injured Saiyan’s face. The onlookers gasped at these dirty tactics, but the fight went on. It seemed that this would not be such an honourable duel after all. Menai continued to rain kicks down on the prone Kylar, cracking ribs and knocking teeth loose. The Hybrid curled up and did the only thing he could, lashed out at the ankles of his assailant. With a sickening snap, the Namekian fell to the floor, shouting in rage. Kylar opened his mouth to say something about how this was supposed to be a duel, not a dirty street fight, when suddenly his vision flashed white. A ki blast shot from Menai’s mouth, slamming into his eyes and blinding him. He felt himself being picked up and hurled to the side of the cave. Unaware of his surroundings, Kylar couldn’t even properly brace for the impact, hitting the waterfall’s wall shoulder first. He could feel it break as he fell to the floor face first. He groaned, and that was all the noise he could muster. “Menai, enough.” Came a raspy voice from within the village. Kylar raised his head to see, to his astonishment, a female human walking towards him. “You aren’t above the rules. Ki was forbidden, and arguable so were half your tactics for this so-called duel.” Kylar could hear the sneer on Menai’s face. “I figured he would like a taste of home, his ruthless people would expect no less than that in a fight.” Managing to struggle to a seated position, Kylar could see Namekian’s rushing towards him, eager to throw aside the animosity they originally felt in order to try to help him. The woman waved them away, placing a hand on Kylar’s broken shoulder causing him to wince. “I will take care of him. Menai, you lose. Go home.” She said with a firm voice that gave no room for argument. Suddenly, Kylar could feel a warmth rush from the woman to him, his bones resetting themselves and his cuts pinching closed before the onlookers eyes. This woman was clearly someone of power who had previously trained with Guru. “When you are strong enough, I will take you to the next test, Kylar.” She said kindly, handing to him a skin full of water that he eagerly drank from. “Who are you?” He gasped out, wiping water from his mouth. She was beautiful, even with her white hair. Her eyes foretold wisdom that surpassed her already numerous years. He was answered with a smile, “If you can talk, you’re good enough for the next test.” And with those words, lifted off and began flying away, not looking back to see if he was following her. In a rush, Kylar shot out of the opening, chasing the mystery woman through the skies towards whatever destination she had in mind. |

Disoriented as he was from the fight, and a Guardian cheating in it no less, Kylar had no idea where this mystery woman was taking him. The way that the Guardian simply stood down from her command, and the villagers did as she told them, showed the Hybrid that she was someone to listen to, perhaps someone of importance. And so they flew in silence. Kylar began to grow bored of this little game of follow the leader, until he saw just where they were headed. Off in the distance, he could see a spire coming up from the ground, with a large white building perched on the top of it. “Guru’s place?” He asked incredulously as they landed. For a split second he was afraid that Guru might actually be the final test that he had to fight. He knew that Guru’s expertise of fighting was astounding, people travelled from other worlds to train with the Master, like he did. The woman laughed at the worried look on his face. “Don’t worry. Your next test is me. I just prefer to complete the final test on Guru’s front doorstep.” And Kylar breathed a sigh of relief. As he watched, the woman stripped off her gloves, boots, and a cape, dropping the heavily weighted articles in a neat pile. “The name is Sandesa, by the way. Most people just call me Sand.” The Hybrid had barely had the shoes clear of his feet when he caught a flash of movement in his peripherals. Sand was right on him in a split second, doubling him over with a kick to the side, and following it up with a savage knee to his face that sent him flying to his back. “So, no special rules for this one I take it.” Kylar muttered as he climbed to his feet. Sand’s smile grew grim. “No. We just go until Guru says stop.” And with a look of determination in his eyes, Kylar steeled himself for what would become one of the most gruelling fights that he had participated in during his young life. Sand was relentless in her attacks, fast enough to give him barely any time to react, and strong enough that even blocking them seemed like he was taking the full force of the attack. The woman was deceptively strong, and Kylar knew that he couldn’t continue to just play defensive. Dropping his guard and eating an attack, Kylar threw a counter leg-kick. With a thwack the attack buckled the woman’s leg sideways, giving Kylar enough time to recover from her punch and continue. His feet left the ground with the force of the knee he threw, catching Sand in the breastbone and bearing the woman to the ground. Standing over his opponent menacingly, Kylar took a deep breath, calming himself, and stepping back to allow her to get back to her feet. The two locked eyes, a knowing respect crossing the barrier between them, and Sand gave a curt nod. She was ready, and Kylar re-engaged. With a fury that burned inside him, Kylar’s hands began moving faster and faster, Sand was being driven backwards towards Guru’s palace. Sand was looking on astonished, Kylar’s hands and legs moving in a blur as he threw out the merciless attacks, while the Hybrid was visibly restraining himself, trying his hardest not to let his inner demons out and accidentally finish the woman off. Sand was being beaten and pressed backwards into Guru’s palace, each time she raised a block, she was struck by an attack that she didn’t even see. Kylar’s eyes began to flicker between their regular state, and their transformed versions as he growled and gritted his teeth, trying to suppress the urge to burst into his new form. A kick slipped through her guard again, doubling the woman over, and the following overhand right launched Sand’s body to the ground like a ragdoll. As Kylar paused, ready for more attacks but waiting for his opponent to stand once more. “Enough, my students.” Came the raspy-voiced Guru from the back of the room that they had now fought into. “Sandesa, that was an impressive display of your fighting skills. Kylar, I truly did not believe you had the self discipline to use only your natural, unenhanced abilities. Guru beckoned the Hybrid close, and Kylar obliged as Sand walked to the back of the room, joining the bodyguards there. “Kylar as you have surpassed my greatest test, I will grant you access to the writings of any one technique you so choose, and I shall teach it to you. After that, I just ask that you take some time off training with me, a week or two, and reflect on your time here, and your life path. After that we can continue your training, double-hard.” Kylar’s face split into a huge grin, and the unseen guards and students around the room began to applaud the Saiyan-Demon warrior. “Thank you, sir. I cannot tell you how excited I am for this. Thank you!” His excitement and energy carried him for the next twelve hours, time he spent pouring over the lists of descriptions of techniques Guru was now offering to him, ancient tomes that seemed like no one had opened them for years. All this knowledge was overwhelming as the Hybrid blindly searched for what would become his most powerful technique to date. Half a day after going down to the annals of Guru’s private library, Kylar returned once more. “So, my student, I trust you have chosen your new ability?” Kylar nodded in silence, not trusting his voice to speak. “Well? Out with it then. What is it that has you so tongue tied?” And Kylar raised a book, presenting it to Guru. The Elder regarded the tome, and nodded approvingly. “Masenko... A powerful attack... And one that I trust you will use in great ways that are yet to come.” Guru finished, putting the book to the side, and laying a hand on Kylar’s bent head. “Come, my pupil. Your next steps begin now.” Word Count: 6556 Total |
