When Ray Worth parked his car on the shoulder of the highway, he could already see the sheriff's deputies stringing tape around the still form on the asphalt. He got out of his car and shuddered as a stiff wind whipped under the collar of his coat and chilled him to the bone. There was a coroner's van parked up the way, amongst the police cars, and Ray felt a sudden chill, deeper than that of the wind. Even with his years as an observer and investigator of violent crimes, first in Memphis as a homicide cop and then back here in his wife's hometown as a detective of sorts (his official title was Chief Investigator for the Oktibbeha County Sheriff's Department), it still turned his insides to ice when he saw a human life snatched before its time by someone who felt they had something to prove or a score to settle. Ray stuck his hands in his pockets and walked on to the boundary made by the tape. Looking over, he saw the sheriff, Charlie Thompson, talking to a pretty young woman, obviously a reporter of some kind, who was scribbling furiously on a notepad. Ray had never had much respect for reporters...when he was in Memphis they always mobbed crime scenes and flung questions and remarks at him and his colleagues as they tried to gather evidence and decide what might have happened. It wasn't much of a problem here, though, which was one thing he actually enjoyed about a smaller town like this one. Born in Memphis, he had always liked the city, with its lights and constant activity, and had not ever intended to leave...until he met his wife. After that he considered it a lot more seriously, especially when she mentioned moving back to be closer to her parents. And honestly, Ray was beginning to feel his age--at forty-three, he wasn't quite as nimble as he once was, and the slower work was a welcome change. He turned his attention to the corpse as he walked up to the tape and stopped. The wind slowed to a breeze and he could feel it gently ruffling his hair. The body--a young woman--lay faceup in an awkward sprawl on the pavement, one leg obviously broken and twisted to the side, the other straight out. Her neck was bent at an awkward angle, probably broken, and there was blood splattered all over the pavement behind her head from what was probably a smashed skull. There was another coroner's van at the opposite end of the taped area from Ray, and as he looked at it a man came around the side and stepped over the tape. Ray ducked under and walked out to meet him. This was Kevin Walsh, a former Jackson medical technician who had been elected coroner the previous year. Ray knew him from college. "Pretty good mess, huh, Kev?" Ray said. "Just great. No skid marks on the pavement around her," Walsh said. "Did you notice that?" "It did cross my mind." "You know what that means." "Well, it could mean a couple of things," Ray said. "Such as?" "The driver of the car," Ray said, "either was doing something and not watching the road, and that's why they didn't slow up, or they simply didn't care." "And just ran her over." "Right." "What do you think, then?" "Right offhand," Ray said, "I'm thinking option number two. I mean, you'd almost have to be blind to not see her car-" --he gestured at the older-model Toyota that stood with its hood up on the side of the road-- "out here. I mean, look at the land. It's flat, this is a good four-lane road. And most drivers, if they see someone pulled over, will get in the other lane...just to be safe. Know what I mean?" "Yeah." "Keep all the others out of here for a few minutes," Ray said, "and let me look this over. That okay?" "Sure." Walsh waved off a couple of deputies who were edging towards the tape. "Anything else?" "Yeah...you can tell one of those deputies to go get a bunch of coffee. It's cold out here. And tell the reporter lady over there--if she asks--that this is officially a homicide." |
