A young Namekian named Oboe was sitting on a rock, staring up at the wide sky. It was always like it was, boring, never changing. Heck, even the sun didn’t set here. But something felt good about it; like being on this planet was the way it was meant to be. He may not have been born on Namek, but he was a Namekian, so perhaps that made it feel right. But he still missed Earth a lot, even if the sky wasn’t green. More than anything, though, he missed his father. It had been silent for a few hours as he was thinking. He should probably have spent the time training, or perhaps repairing the ship he had crashed in, or even sleeping, but he need the time to organize his thoughts. At last the silence was broken by small, shy voice coming from behind him. “Mr. Oboe,” the voice said. Oboe immediately spun around. There was a young Namekian standing behind him. The child’s eyes had a certain shine to them. “It must be nice to be so youthful and optimistic,” he thought. But then he realized that the kid probably wasn’t that much older than he was, he had just grown more quickly for some reason. “What is it?” Oboe asked. “There’s a big monster eating all of the ajissa plants. You’re pretty strong, so I was wondering if you could go and beat it up,” the boy said. “A monster? Is it strong?” Oboe asked. Any kind of excitement was more than welcome to him. Life had been relatively boring for the past year he had lived on Namek. It would be a shame if it turned out that the “monster” was just a small, insignificant animal, like a frog that this kid was just overreacting to. “I don’t know, but it’s really big…” the kid said. “Big hunh? I guess I could go check it out.” |

Oboe spent nearly an hour walking, the suns scorching sun beating down upon his back. It certainly didn’t help that there were two of them. After a time, he decided to take a quick break and rest in the shade of one a nearby ajissa trees. There wasn’t much shade underneath of it, as the tree had an odd, rounded shape to it, unlike the trees he knew on Earth. But still, some shade was better than nothing. He put his arms behind his head and slowly drifted off into a calm, peaceful sleep. As Oboe’s mind was just starting to enter a dream, he was quickly awakened by something that sounded like very large footsteps. He tried to ignore it, but then heard a sound like the crunching of leaves above him. He looked up to see an enormous creature that looked somewhat like a dinosaur. It stared up at it for a second and looked it straight in the eye. He had never seen a dinosaur quite like this one before. Its skin was the same color of green as his own was, and likewise had two slender antennae coming from above each of its eyes. It stood bipedal and its eyes were a golden yellow. The creature stared at him, and bent down and sniffed him. Oboe stood perfectly still, hoping the beast would ignore him and continue on with what it was doing. The dinosaur turned around and returned to its previous activity: eating the leaves off of the ajissa tree. Oboe quickly put two and two together. This must have been the monster that the kid from earlier had mentioned. He had to defeat this beast, or at least somehow stop it from devouring the ajissa trees, not for the kid, but rather to further himself in the process. |

Oboe stood up straight and looked at the dinosaur in a menacing manner. He leaped into the air and delivered a swift quick to its jaw. It didn’t phase the beast, though. It merely attracted its attention. The dinosaur looked over at Oboe and lifted one of its feet up. Oboe took a step back and braced himself. The dinosaur put its foot down on top of Oboe, but he thrust his hands out above his head and caught it. With a great deal of strength, he swung the beast over to the side of himself and sent it crashing head first into the ground. He had a smirk of immense satisfaction on his face for instant, but it quickly disappeared as he realized that the dinosaur was getting up. It had a ferocious look in its eye, like that of a madman about to murder someone. And Oboe was to be that madman’s victim. The dinosaur charged over at Oboe and thrust its head out, jaws agape and lined with teeth like pearl white daggers. Oboe swiftly moved to the left, but it wasn’t enough. The dinosaur took his arm into its mouth and lifted its head up. Oboe was dangling by his arm, trapped in the beast’s mouth. An immense wave of pain went through Oboe’s arm all the way up to shoulder, and prompted him to act rashly. He tried to rip the arm free of the dinosaur’s teeth, but in doing so, severed the arm, causing him to drop several meters and land with a hard thud on the ground below. The dinosaur seemed relatively satisfied with what it had done, and swallowed the arm. It then returned to the ajissa tree. This time however, it was not eating the leaves, but using its mouth to pluck them, and gathered them up in its stubby arms. |

Oboe clutched what remained of his arm. There was hardly any of it left, and what was there was mostly just his shoulder. It bled heavily for a minute, dripping a deep, violet blood into a small pool that was beginning to form on the ground. But the pain quickly subsided, and his arm stopped bleeding. At that moment, he instinctively knew what was going on. His body was starting to heal itself. Oboe focused his ki into the damaged area. The stump of his arm started to tingle. The next thing he knew, a fresh arm shot out of the severed portion. It was covered in a whitish mucus-like substance and he could hardly feel it. It started to twinge as the blood slowly returned to his arm. Oboe clutched onto his new arm and looked back up at the dinosaur. By this point, it had gathered a fair amount of the ajissa leaves in its hands and trudged off into the distance. Oboe, though exhausted from having to regenerate his arm, followed it until he reached a large cave in the side of a cliff. The dinosaur entered it, and Oboe went in behind it. It was dark inside the cave and he could barely see in front of himself. He focused some of his remaining ki into the palm of his hand, and it flared into a bright, whitish blue aura, illuminating the cave’s interior. Being able to see in front of himself, he immediately saw the enormous, hulking body of the dinosaur. It was bending down next to a small arrangement of leaves and stones. Nestled within the arrangement was a cluster of six bright green eggs. At this point it became clear to him just what was going on. The dinosaur was actually just being a good parent, and it was never actually eating the ajissa plants, but collecting materials in order to make its nest. |

What was Oboe to do? He couldn’t bring himself to murder a parent to be, even if that parent was a wild animal. But he couldn’t just the dinosaur continue to decimate the ajissa trees. Perhaps if he could somehow complete the nest, he’d be able to prevent any more harm from coming to the plants. But that would require finding some sort of substitute for the ajissa leaves. It would have to be soft, and able to keep the eggs warm, in the same manner that his own shirt kept him warm. His shirt. Could that work as a viable substitute? It was a possibility. It was actually woven out of the fibers found in ajissa plants, so it could work in the same manner. He pulled his shirt over his head and held it in his free hand. He walked over to the dinosaur and offered the shirt to it. The dinosaur apparently had gotten over their earlier encounter, either that or it had simply forgotten. It slowly bent down until its head was at the same level as Oboe’s height and sniffed the shirt, for a minute before picking it up between its teeth and placed it on top of its clutch of eggs. It then sat down on top of the eggs, similarly to how a bird would incubate their eggs. This concept, however, was foreign to Oboe. Namekian eggs never had a need to be incubated, as they hatched minutes after being spit up. Still, he couldn’t help but smile. He could somehow sense that the dinosaur was happy, and it apparently wouldn’t be building its nest anymore. With a satisfied look on his face, he walked out of the cave’s mouth and back to the field where he was earlier. “Maybe, just maybe,” he thought. “I’ll become a parent someday too…” |
