It was a relatively calm, peaceful afternoon on planet Namek. Or was it morning? Oboe couldn’t tell; there were two suns in the sky. As he was briefly contemplating, he could swear he heard a voice say his name. He quickly turned around, but to his surprise, no one was there.

“I’m not behind you,” the voice said. He could hear it more clearly now and it sounded a bit like an elderly man. “I am speaking to you through your mind.”

“My mind?” Oboe took a second to ponder it. Did that mean that he could hear all of his thoughts? If so how long had this voice been listening?

“Don’t worry, I’ve only just now been talking to you,” the voice said. “My children call me the Great Elder. I need to see you. A few kilometers behind you there’s a rock spire. I’ll be waiting on the house inside of it.”

Oboe was somewhat confused. He had heard people mention this Great Elder before, most recently in his fight with Gero. However, he had never seen him face to face. He didn’t even have any idea what he looked like. Regardless, he decided to trust the stranger who was listening in on his thoughts. He looked behind himself and saw a tall pointed rock a ways in the distance towering over the nearby hills and mountains. He turned around and levitated a ways off the ground before flying a bit faster in the direction of the rock. As he drew nearer, he could see a small house that looked somewhat like a hut on the top of the spire. He touched down and examined his surroundings. There was an oddly shaped door in front of it with a rather large and muscular Namekian in front of it, nearly a head taller than Oboe.

“So, are you just going to stand there all day, or are you going to let me in?” Oboe said defiantly.

The Namekian’s nose wrinkled and he bared a fang at the youngster.

“Are you just going to stand there and be rude all day, or are you going to leave?” he said.

“I’m going to go inside,” Oboe said rudely.

“Do you know who you’re up against?” the Namekian said, raising his voice.

“Do I care?” Oboe yelled.

The pair stared intensely at each for a few seconds, but suddenly, the older Namekian’s face turned into a black stare. He nodded his head silently and said, “You may pass.”

The disgruntled Namekian stepped aside and the door levitated open in the same manner as a drawbridge might, but going up as opposed to down. Oboe stepped inside and looked around the room. It was completely empty, nothing but a void with the exception of two windows positioned on the right and left sides of the room.

“Look up,” the Namekian who had been guarding the door said.

Oboe turned his attention to the ceiling to see a wide circular opening. Oboe floated up through the hole to find another somewhat smaller room. He touched down on the floor and looked up to see a large Namekian seated in a chair. A very large Namekian. Though he was seated, he was more than double Oboe’s size. He also appeared very old and wrinkled, and obese. He had an air of authority about him, but regardless, Oboe stood with his arms folded across his chest in a casual manner with a blank expression on his face.

“I see you met my child,” he said with a wrinkled smile.

Oboe stared at him for a moment before asking, “Are you the Great Elder?”

“I am indeed,” the Great Elder said with a smile.

“So, let’s get the point,” Oboe said impatiently. “What the heck am I here for?”

“You need to learn to be patent. Now tell me, how old are you?” the Great Elder asked.

“I turned three about a month ago,” Oboe said.

“Ah, I thought so,” the Great Elder replied. “You’re right around the age where you should start going to school.”

“School!? You want me to go to a school!?” Oboe shouted. He had heard of schools before, but he had never heard anything but complaints about them. Other than that, he had no idea what a school was.

“Yes. School is an important part of everyone’s life, and it’s important that you attend it. Besides, someone as hotheaded as you are would enjoy sparring with the other students,” the Great Elder said.

All of the sudden, the notion of going to a school didn’t seem like such a bad idea to Oboe. If he were allowed to fight the others he was in school, then perhaps it would be well worth whatever bad things came along with it.

“So, where’s this “school” thing anyway?” Oboe asked.

“There’s a small village not too far from here to the east,” the Great Elder started. “There’s a class that starts in around an hour. You may be able to attend if you fly there.”

“I’ll go then,” Oboe said, a confident smirk on his face. Not stopping to see if the Great Elder had anything else to say, he jumped down from the hole in the floor (or was it the ceiling?) and dashed out the door. Ignoring the Namekian who was still somewhat annoyed by his presence, Oboe dashed off of the cliff’s edge and flew eastward, curious to see what this “school” had in store for him.

After more than an hour of flying, Oboe was beginning to feel exhausted. Though he knew it would reach the village much more quickly if he flew, he was beginning to think it was a bad idea. He slowly descended to the ground, panting as he did. He wiped a bit of sweat from his forehead. As his strength slowly returned, he realized that he was standing in a small field of ajissa saplings. As he further looked around, he could see a few hut-like houses in the area. This had to be the village he had been searching for.

Just outside of the field, there was a small group of tables with a few young Namekians sitting down listening to something an older one was saying. Oboe walked up to the small group and asked, “I’m looking for a school. Do you know where it is?”

“This is the school,” the older Namekian said. “If you’re supposed to be attending, then have a seat.”

Oboe sat down on the bench next to the table. It was unsteady and wobbled a bit, and rose a bit off of its base, causing the boy next to him to be bounced upward like a person on a seesaw.

“Whoa!” the kid said. As he landed back on the seat, he immediately looked over at Oboe. The two took a second to look at each other, and both could have sworn they’d seen the other before. Oboe suddenly realized that this wasn’t the first time he had seen the boy. Around a month ago, he had asked to defeat a monster eating the ajissa that turned out to be a dinosaur. After a brief moment, the boy seemed to recognize him as well.

“Hi! My name is Kuji,” he said.

“I’m Oboe,” Oboe replied. “Just how long is this anyway?”

“School’s all day long,” Kuji told him.

“A-all day?” Oboe said somewhat surprised. He had thought that school was only an hour or two. This was going to turn out to be much more tedious than he thought.

Time passed by more slowly than he thought possible. Seven hours into the lesson, and they were learning about astronomy. Their teacher had begun drawing symbols on a piece of paper he propped up on a stand. He was trying to explain how the planet orbited around a main sun and the other suns also rotated around that sun. The kids, however, had difficulty understanding it. Oboe couldn’t understand it all. It wasn’t that the concept was too complicated for him to understand, but rather that he didn’t care. His mind was busy wandering elsewhere, or at least it was trying to. Every time he had a steady train of thought going, Kuji would whisper something to him that he didn’t care about in the slightest. It started out being about a huge fish he had seen in a nearby lake around a week ago and eventually turned into questioning him about the marking on his forehead.

When is it going to end?" Oboe thought.

Then a short sentence the teacher said piqued his interest: “And we’re going to end today’s lesson with some exercise.”

Finally, something to look forward to” Oboe thought. Not only was he finally going to get up and do something, but also, school was almost over.

Oboe got out of his seat and stretched a bit, his flexible body enabling him to stretch so far back that it bent and nearly a 260-degree angle. He then bent forward far enough that he touched the ground behind his knees. After that, he stood up and cracked his knuckled. “So, what kind of exercise do you have in mind?” Oboe asked.

“Everyone will pair up and engage in a free spar for a few minutes. It’s a good way for you kids to learn how to defend yourselves,” the teacher said.

Kuji immediately ran over to Oboe. “Do you wanna fight me?” he asked.

Oboe could have sworn this was some kind of joke. He had come to this school to fight and his opponent was this kid. He almost laughed at the thought of it.

“Sure I’ll fight you,” Oboe said, trying not to chuckle.

Before he could say anything else, he felt a tugging on his left ear, and was quickly whisked away by it.

“What the hell?” he said.

Spinning around, he could see that it was the teacher who had dragged him aside.

“Go easy on him; he’s younger than you,” the teacher said.

You didn’t have to tell me twice,” Oboe thought. “Alright,” he said.

Oboe walked back over to Kuji. “So, are you ready?” he asked in as serious a manner as he could muster.

“Un-hunh,” Kuji replied.

“Okay then, you go first,” Oboe said.

“Alright then, here I come!” Kuji shouted.

Kuji rushed forward with a quick punch that Oboe easily blocked, but unexpectedly, two bright beams of ki shot out of his eyes and shocked Oboe, but he quickly regained his strength.

“Well, I didn’t-“

But before he could finish his sentence, Kuji delivered a heavy punch to his face.

Oboe stepped back a bit and drew his hand behind his head before flinging it forward and stretching it to beyond its normal size. He grabbed Kuji and pulled him forward, but a beam of ki came out of Kuji’s antennae and once again stunned Oboe. “You little bastard!” he thought. Determined not to let it faze him again, he kept as close an eye on his target as he could. Kuji once again tried to punch him in the face, but Oboe caught his tiny fist. Oboe opened his mouth wide a blast of ki erupted from it. Oboe let go of Kuji’s fist. The boy’s clothes were torn up a bit, and he slumped on the ground exhausted.

“Okay, you win,” Kuji said smiling.

The teacher immediately came up from behind Oboe and struck him with a heavy punch.

“What the hell did you do that for!?” Oboe shouted.

I should be the one asking that! I told you to go easy on him!” the teacher responded.

“I was going easy on him, he’s just good at fighting!” Oboe yelled.

“I am?” Kuji said with wide eyes.

“Well, you’re not half bad,” Oboe said with a smirk.

“Thanks,” Kuji said grinning. He shakily stood up and patted the dirt off of his clothes.

“What do you think you’re doing fighting someone who’s so much younger than you? Come to think of it, why are you here anyway?” the teacher asked.

“How old are you Kuji?” Oboe asked the boy.

Kuji began counting on his fingers. “One… two… three… I’m eight,” he replied.

“See, he’s older than me,” Oboe said. “I’m three.”

“Three?” The teacher took a moment to ponder what he was saying. “You must be a warrior-type then.* But you definitely shouldn’t be going to school at this age. Why did you come?”

“The Great Elder told me to attend,” he told the teacher. “But what do you mean I’m a “warrior-type?”

The teacher chuckled for a moment. “The Great Elder probably just forgot. Three is around the age that dragon clan Namekians start schooling, so he might have just confused you. I’d be willing to bet he can’t see very well, so it’s a simple mistake. But if you really must know, a warrior-type Namekian…” The teacher started rambling on for a minute or two until Oboe finally became bored of hearing it.

“Look, I know you’re a teacher and all, but I’m done with this “school” stuff, remember?” Oboe looked over at Kuji. “And you. Fight a little more often and maybe we’ll be able to spar again once you’re a little older.” He slowly levitated off the ground and put his hand up in a sort of waving position before taking off. What he needed to do was train, not go to a school.

*A/N: This is more fan speculation than anything, but carefully thought out fan speculation. It stems from the fact that Piccolo and Dende have confilcting rates of aging, but it's often explained away as one of two things, either it's because Piccolo's a demon, or warrior-types age faster than dragon clan Namekians. I've accepted the later, because he wasn't physically different from other Namekians, unlike Daimao's other children.
