Oboe stood outside of the Great Elder’s house, once again looking into the eyes of the Namekian that spent his time guarding it. This time however, the guardian stepped aside without having any sort of argument. Oboe thought he heard the man utter something under his breath, but it was too faint to make out any of the words. The door opened and Oboe walked inside of the building’s ground floor. He then stared up at the hole that was in the ceiling and hover up it, touching down on the second floor. Coming here was beginning to become a sort of routine, as he had done so every day for more than a month.

Unlike most who came here, Oboe didn’t bow before the Great Elder. He merely stood quietly for a moment, arms at his sides, fists clenched and ready for whatever orders he was to be given today. However, the Great Elder didn’t seem to acknowledge his presence. As a minute or two ticked by, the reason became apparent. The Great Elder was sound asleep, and even snoring a bit.

“Hey, wake up,” Oboe said in a somewhat rude tone of voice.

The Great Elder twitched a bit before saying, “Who’s there?”

“It’s Oboe,” Oboe said. “You told me yesterday to come see you. You said something about having some special task for me.”

“Ah, yes, now I remember.” Oboe honestly wondered whether or not the elderly Namekian really remembered, or was simply going to make something up. “You’re a warrior-type Namekian, aren’t you?”

The Great Elder once made a mistake regarding this, but Oboe was glad he got it right this time. “Yes,” Oboe replied.

“You’re very strong for being only four years old,” the Great Elder said.

“Three,” Oboe corrected him.

“I figured I’d give you a little test of your strength,” the Great Elder said.

Oboe’s interest was piqued by what he just said. “What exactly is this going to involve?” he asked.

“I want you to fight against my strongest warriors. They’re scattered throughout the villages on the planet. Defeat all four of them, and then return here. If you do so, I’ll teach you a powerful technique.”

A powerful technique,” Oboe thought. “This would probably be worth my time.

“Where are they?” Oboe asked.

“Defeat one and they’ll tell you the location of the next one. You can start with Kizu. He’s probably outside the door waiting,” The Great Elder said.

Oboe turned around, ready to jump down the hole he came in from, but the Great Elder stopped him.

“But there’s one more condition,” he said. “Neither one of you are allowed to use any ki attacks, and that includes bukujutsu.”

“What!?” Oboe shouted. “Then what did you teach me these attacks for if I can’t use them?”

“This is a test of your skill and ingenuity, not how strong your ki attacks are. If I find out that you end up using them, there isn’t going to be any reward for completing this task,” the Great Elder replied.

Oboe was somewhat irritated by the conditions, but still took his leave as he was going to before. There wasn’t any point in arguing. He jumped down the hole in the floor and landed in the entrance room. He walked out the door to find the Namekian who had been guarding it, Kizu was stretching. As soon as he saw Oboe, he stood up straight and cracked his knuckles.

“I guess you know we’re supposed to fight,” Oboe said.

“Of course,” Kizu replied. “I’ve wanted to punch your face in since the day we met. This is just my way of getting to do so.”

“You think you can beat me?”

“This shouldn’t even take a minute,” Kizu said. With that, he seemed to disappear into thin air.

Oboe immediately thought to look behind him. He had fought opponents before that would use similar tricks to slip behind him without his noticing, but to his surprise, Kizu came from the side and elbowed him in the jaw. Oboe was sent flying back, and off the edge of the rock spire they were on. As Oboe fell, he extended his arm and barely managed to catch onto Kizu’s leg, but took a light grip and pulled him towards him. The two were now falling off the side of side of the cliff. Though they were probably at terminal velocity, it seemed to take forever to actually fall. Oboe knew that he couldn’t do anything to stop it. If he used bukujutsu now, he’d be considered disqualified. But Kizu couldn’t do anything about it either.

As the two descended, Oboe caught onto the face of the cliff and slowed his descent. He then bounced off the wall in a downward direction headed straight for Kizu. He used the momentum to head butt the Namekian in the chest, making the pair fall even faster than they had before. As the pair hit the ground, Kizu took the brunt of the fall where as Oboe suffered minimal damage. Oboe got up, flipped back and looked over at his opponent. It seemed that he had been knocked out by the combination of his head butt and hitting the ground. He patted a bit of the dirt off of his pants before walking back over to Kizu. He crouched down and said, “Hey, are you alright? Get up.”

Kizu began to stir and opened an eyelid. He picked his body up off the ground and looked over at Oboe. “What just happened?” he asked.

“Not much,” Oboe replied. “You fell.”

“Well then, I admit defeat,” Kizu said. “The next village is far to the west of here.” He pointed over to his right.”

“Am I allowed to fly to the next village? Or do I have to walk?” Oboe asked.

“The rules only apply to fighting. It shouldn’t be a problem for you to simply fly to the next village,” Kizu told him.

“Alright then, tell the Great Elder that when I come back I’ll be ready for what ever it is he has to teach me,” Oboe said. He lifted into the air and headed off in a westward direction.

The heat of two suns was beating down on Oboe’s back as he flew westward, his eyes pealed, scanning the ground the ground for the village he was looking for. The heat was becoming far too much for him to bear. Paired with the fact he hadn’t had a drink since he woke up, he decided to stop for a moment next to a nearby river.

He touched down on the muddy bank underneath an ajissa tree and knelt down, scooping a bit of the water up with his hands and drawing it to his mouth. After a few sips, he sat back with his arms laid out behind him. The tree he was sitting under provided him a bit of shelter from the smoldering sun. He put his arms behind his head, sat back against it, and closed his eyes. Just as he was about to drift off to sleep, he heard a voice from behind him say, “Hey!”

Oboe grunted and opened his eyes. There was no one directly in front of him, but he thought he could see someone’s figure from his peripherals. He stood up and turned around to see a somewhat familiar looking Namekian with a scar across the bridge of his nose.

“It’s been a while since I’ve seen you,” the Namekian said.

“I remember you. You tried to kill me a while back,” Oboe told him.

“I hope there aren’t any hard feelings about that. We’re supposed to fight again you know,” the Namekian replied.

“Again? Why’s that?” Oboe asked.

“As a part of the task the Great Elder assigned you,” he replied.

“So you’re the warrior I have to fight, hunh?” Oboe said.

“So it seems,” the Namekian said. “I don’t believe I’ve ever introduced myself. My name is Bosa. And you?”

“Oboe.”

“Alright then, let’s get started,” Bosa said.

Bosa rushed forward and tackled Oboe pushing him back and sending the both of them plunging into the water. The two descended a few feet down before Bosa pushed off of him and floated a ways back. With the weighted clothing Oboe was wearing, he sunk like a lead weight down to the bottom and touched down on a surface that he found to be surprisingly soft. Suddenly, it started moving, rising up shaking, almost as if it were trying to get Oboe off. He looked down to see that it wasn’t the bottom of the river, but an enormous fish. The fish shook him off of its head and started to look around to find whatever had been on top of it. What it saw however was not Oboe, but Bosa. It swam toward him like a torpedo and swallowed him whole.

Oboe flung off his weighted clothing and touched off of the ground, speeding toward the fish and ramming it with his head. Though it didn’t seem to bother the fish much, it seemed to notice and now turned its attention to him. Without him being able to do anything about it, it also engulfed him.

He found himself inside what appeared to be the creature’s stomach, floating on some sort of rock that it had presumably swallowed earlier. All around him was a sea of the beast’s digestive juices. At least this place has air, he thought. He heard a weak moan over to his right and quickly looked over in that direction. In the acid Bosa near the edge of the rock, looking rather drained. Oboe extended his hand and helped his opponent out of the water. He flipped him onto his back and touched off the rock and jumped up the creature’s esophagus. Once inside its mouth, he landed on its tongue and forced open its jaw a bit. A sudden burst of water poured in, but he stood his ground and swam against the current out of the fish, soon arriving at the surface. He swam over to a nearby shore and took Bosa off of his back and placed him on the ground.

Bosa had apparently lost consciousness. No matter how much Oboe shook him, he wouldn’t come to. However, it was clear that he wasn’t dead, as he still breathed, albeit very slowly. His body had light burns on it from the fish’s stomach acid, and it was likely that as soon as he awoke, he would be in pain from that too.

Oboe took a bit of water out of river and poured it on his Bosa’s head. His eyes twitched a bit and slowly opened up. He winced in pain a bit, but brought himself to a sitting position.

“What just happened?” he asked.

“Would you believe me if I said you were eaten alive?” Oboe replied.

“Oh, the fish,” Bosa said. “Either way, it’s not like I can really fight you now. I’d love to continue, but I’m not really in any condition to do so. I’m going to have to forfeit this match to you.”

“That’s alright,” Oboe said. “One of these days, we’ll get our rematch. So, where’s the next village at anyway?

“It’s a ways to the east,” Bosa said. “You should be able to reach it after a few hours if you fly.”

“Alright, but I’m taking you with me to that village. I’m not going to let you stay like this out in the middle of nowhere,” Oboe told him.

“Well, I guess there’s nothing I can do to resist you,” Bosa replied. “Do what you want.”

Oboe picked Bosa up again and put him on his back. He was far from light, but it was nothing that Oboe couldn’t manage. He had a bit of trouble getting off of the ground, but once flying, supporting Bosa’s weight became easier.

“By the way,” Oboe started. “Which way’s west?”

Oboe had been taught to navigate by the rising and setting sun, but it was virtually impossible due to the fact there was always more than one in the sky on this planet.

“That way,” Bosa said pointing in front of him.

Oboe started to fly in that direction, but somewhat slowly as to not disturb his injured companion.

The sun’s heat had dried Oboe off, but it seemed to do nothing but irritate Bosa. Every now and then he would groan quietly or complain about it. Oboe wanted to tell him to shut up, but for once, he didn’t want to be rude and simply ignored it.

After several hours of flying, a small Namekian village appeared on the horizon. Bosa had fallen asleep since then, but Oboe shook him a bit.

“Hey, wake up,” he said. “We’re here.”

Oboe landed in front of the closest house in the village and knocked on the door. He stepped back a bit as he did so, since he knew that this sort of door would swing forward. Sure enough, the door opened and a rather young Namekian stepped out. His arms were crossed in front of his chest and had a somewhat annoyed look on his face.

“What the hell do you want?” he asked. “I’m kind of waiting for someone else right now.”

“I’m the one who should be asking that you little brat!” Oboe yelled. “My friend just got eaten alive by a giant fish! Can’t you see he’s hurt?”

“Whatever,” the boy said in a rude tone. “Bring him inside. There’s a bed where he can lay down.”

Oboe walked inside. The house’s interior was rather spacious, but a few pieces of furniture were scattered about it. In one corner was a large bed. He walked over to it and put Bosa down. He was somewhat relieved that he would no longer have to carry him.

Oboe turned his attention over to the boy. “I’m here because I’m looking for this village’s strongest warrior. I was told by the Great Elder that I needed to defeat him in a fight.”

“What!?” the boy said with an astonished look on his face. “You’re the one I have to fight?”

Oboe thought he had misheard the boy. “You’re the strongest warrior in this village?” he said.

“You bet,” the kid replied. “A hell of a lot stronger than you. So, did you want to fight, or what?”

“If I have to,” Oboe said. “I mean, I don’t want you to get hurt or anything.”

“That should be the other way around,” the boy said.

“Oh, you’re that sure of yourself, hunh? Well, I guess I’d better put you in your place you little bastard.”

“You wish,” the kid said with a sneer. “I’ll take you out to where I train. We can fight there.”

The kid walked out the door and Oboe followed behind him. The boy led him to the outskirts of town near a small cluster of mountains. He looked around and saw a handful of the mountains had crater like indentations in their sides, some in the rough shape of fists. Perhaps this kid wasn’t entirely bluffing after all.

The kid turned around and looked him the eye. “Now let’s fight,” he said.

He charged at Oboe with a powerful, but slow kick. Oboe caught it in his hand and used the opening to get a solid punch in to the boy’s face. “Your technique needs work,” he said.

The boy stepped back and drew his arm back, then quickly thrust it out in front of him. The arm expanded and clenched into a tight fist. Oboe caught it and spun him around, sending him crashing into one of the mountains. “You aren’t all you’re cracked up to be,” Oboe said.

Though the mountain wasn’t completely torn down, there was a large pile of rubble underneath of it. The kid emerged from it with an annoyed look on his face. He stepped out and pulled his shirt over his head, then let it fall to the ground where it fell with a thud. It was clearly heavy; it even broke the rock it landed on. “That’s better,” he said.

“What the?” Oboe said with an astonished expression. Apparently, this kid trained using weight clothing like he did. However, Oboe had already taken his off a while back when he was in the water.

The kid suddenly disappeared in the same manner as Kizu had done earlier. Though part of him had suspected that he might come up from the side like Kizu had, he elbowed behind him, and, by sheer luck, he managed to hit the boy in the face. However, when he looked behind him, the kid was no longer there. He then took a double fisted blow to the head from above. The boy, however, was abiding by the rules, and couldn’t fly, so he landed on top of Oboe. He naturally took the opportunity to land a few quick punches, but the kid latched onto his arm in the middle of one and bit him. The boy drove his fangs deep into his skin, enough to make him bleed. Oboe winced in pain, but punched the kid in the face hard enough to get him off. Oboe tore a piece of his shirt loose and wrapped it around his arm. The kid was knocked back a bit by his punch, but he skidded to a stop before once again charging forward at Oboe.

Oboe didn’t have enough time to block his punch, but he countered it with a knee to the kid’s stomach, knocking the wind out of him and stunning him momentarily. He then followed it up with two more heavy hits to his solar plexus. The kid clutched his stomach before collapsing on the ground. “Damn it,” he moaned. He staggered a bit and tried to get up, but fell over once again.

“Sorry kid, but it looks like I win,” Oboe said.

“But how did I lose?” the boy asked.

“It’s simple. You’ve got all that speed and power, but no technique behind it. That’s what real fights like this one teach you. You have to go out there and battle other people, and not be too smug to do so,” Oboe lectured. “But that’s not my issue. My issue is finding the last warrior I’m supposed to fight. Do you know where his village is?”

“He’s far to the south east, a little to the left of the direction you’re facing right now,” the boy said.

“I’d love to leave right now for it, but Bosa’s still in pain. I’ll stay in the village until he gets better,” Oboe replied.

“Don’t worry about your friend. There are healers here in the village. I’m sure they’ll be able to fix him up. In fact, they might have already done so. Now don’t keep the last warrior waiting, go.”

“Alright,” Oboe said with a concerned look. He didn’t want to abandon his friend, but he knew he still had to complete his test. Oboe jumped off the ground to get a head start in flying, waving good-bye to the boy as he did.

How long had Oboe been flying now? A few hours? Almost a day? At this point, he didn’t really think that it mattered. It seemed like he had been going on forever. As the eternity-like minutes passed by, he saw a familiar site near the vanishing point of his view: a small field of ajissa plants and a few young Namekians sitting at an arrangement of tables. Seeing this, Oboe flew faster than he had before and swooped down near the field. The children were just getting up now, apparently about to leave for home. In the small crowd, he could easily spot a young child named Kuji that he had befriended not too long ago. He walked up to him and placed his hand on his shoulder.

“Hey,” Oboe said. “What’s going on?”

“Oboe! “ Kuji shouted. “School just let out. I was going to go home to see my dad.”

“That’s fine. But I need you to help me with something first. I’m supposed to find the strongest warrior in this village and fight him. Do you know anyone like that?” Oboe asked.

“I’m not really sure, but I bet my dad would know. Why don’t ‘cha come with me? Kuji replied.

“Alright then,” Oboe agreed.

Kuji walked off into the village, Oboe following behind him. They soon came up in front of a rather plain looking house.

“Daddy! There’s someone who wants to see you!” Kuji yelled. To both of their surprise, Kuji’s father came from not inside the house, but rather from around the back.

He was a rather large and muscular man, a bit taller than Oboe. He wore what seemed to be some sort of robe, almost like a jacket that went down to his waist that was open in the front, revealing a muscular, yellow patch of skin on his stomach. He stood in a somewhat dignified manner.

“Who’s this?” he asked looking at Kuji.

“This is my friend,” Kuji said. “He helped out with the monster eating the ajissa, remember? He went to school with me for a little while, but then he got kicked out by the teacher.”

“Ah,” Kuji’s father said. “My son kind of idolizes you in case you haven’t noticed.”

“I think I’ve noticed,” Oboe said with a drop of sweat falling from his forehead. “Either way, I’m here to ask you something. The Great Elder told me that I’m supposed to fight the strongest warrior in this village and defeat him. Do you know where his is?”

“You want to fight me?” Kuji’s father asked. “No problem, I just finished a bit of training myself, so I’ve had time to warm up.” He cracked his neck and then his knuckles.

“You’re the one I’m supposed to fight?” Oboe asked.

“Well, not if you don’t want to,” Kuji’s father replied. “By the way kid, what’s your name?”

“Oboe.”

“Great to meet you. I’m Hammer,” he said with a smile. “Now let’s get started. You can go first if you want.”

“Gladly,” Oboe said. He rushed forward with a punch that Hammer caught in his fist.

“You’re pretty strong, aren’t you?” he said.

Hammer attacked with a knee, but Oboe blocked it with his own knee. The two attempted to punch each other, but they ended up colliding as well. Then Oboe crouched down and swept Hammer’s leg, causing him to fall over. However, Hammer flipped backwards and caught himself, doing a handstand as he did. He used is freed legs to try and kick Oboe, but he latched onto it and threw Hammer over his shoulder and onto the ground behind him.

Hammer got up and brushed his pants off. “Not bad,” he said. “You know, it’s been a long time since I last met someone of your skill. I want to show you a technique of mine, but I’m not sure if you’ll have much of a chance of beating me after I use it, even if I keep my power suppressed like this. Do you still want to see it?”

“Well, there’s no point in telling me that if you aren’t going to use it,” Oboe said. “So why don’t you use it?”

“You’re pretty confident, aren’t you?” Hammer asked.

“Not really. I guess I just don’t know when quit,” Oboe replied.

“Alright then, this’ll be the first time in a while I’ve had the opportunity to use this.” Hammer crouched down in a position similar to one that Oboe would take while charging his ki. A vein inside of his head seemed to poke through his skin and his body began to shudder. Suddenly, his entire body seemed to bulge, but it became apparent that it wasn’t simply a bulge. His entire body was slowly and steadily growing larger. His enormous shadow loomed over Oboe, who craned his neck back in order to keep eye contact. After a while, he stood up straight, around ten times taller than he had been before.

“What do you think?” Hammer asked.

“Sheesh,” Oboe said. “But it’s not going to stop me from beating you.”

Hammer drew his enormous fist back and almost punched Oboe, who narrowly managed to sidestep it. He then stamped his foot on the ground, causing it to tremble slightly. Oboe lost his balance and fell over. Hammer brought his foot down on Oboe, who put his hands above his head in attempt to block it.

“Daddy!” Kuji yelled. “Don’t hurt him!”

“He’ll be fine,” Hammer replied.

Oboe managed to shove Hammer’s foot off of him, who was somewhat surprised by Oboe’s strength. Hammer stumbled back a little bit and Oboe grabbed hold of his foot.

“What are you going to-“ Hammer started.

Oboe flung him over Hammer shoulder and sent him crashing into his house, destroying most of one of its walls.

Hammer stood up and examined the damage.

“It looks like I’ll have to fix that,” he said quietly to himself.

Taking the opportunity, Oboe jumped up to his face and punched him in the eye. Hammer slapped Oboe away, who landed in a small crater in the ground. Hammer moaned a bit and slowly shrunk down to his normal size.

Clutching his eye, Hammer walked over to the crater where Oboe was laying. He wasn’t moving and apparently unconscious. Hammer crouched down and tried to shake him awake. Oboe opened his eyes and blinked, trying to clear his hazy vision. He could barely make out Hammer’s outline.

“Are you okay?” Hammer asked. “You look pretty beat.”

“Of course I’m beat,” Oboe replied. “You just beat me, didn’t you?”

“It’s not like it’s a big deal. Fighting against a friend isn’t about winning or losing, it’s about enjoying yourself,” Hammer said. He grabbed Oboe and helped him up.

“I guess this means I can’t learn that technique,” Oboe said with a hint of a depressed look on his face.

“Not necessarily,” Hammer replied. “It’s not like the Great Elder actually saw our fight. I could always just tell him that you won.”

“You would?” Oboe asked.

“Of course. It’s not a problem. You probably would have won if you hadn’t been so headstrong anyway,” Hammer said chuckling.

Oboe stood up straight and looked Hammer in the eye. “When I’ve gotten stronger, will you fight me again?” he asked.

“Of course,” Hammer told him. “Whenever you’re ready.”

“Thanks,” Oboe said. “And one more thing. How did you do that?”

“Do what?” Hammer asked.

“I mean, how did you grow bigger like that?” Oboe replied.

“That’s a secret,” Hammer told him. “I can’t teach you how to do that yet. You’re too young and inexperienced to learn it. However, if you get stronger and a little older, the God of Earth might be able to help you with it.”

Oboe carefully memorized his words, doing his best to ingrain them into his memory.

“Alright then,” Oboe said. “I’ll come back one of these days, and when I do, I’ll beat you.”

Oboe leapt into the air and flew off to the Great Elder’s house, expecting to be taught some new technique.

“Daddy, do you really think he’s going to get that much stronger?” Kuji asked.

“He’s either going to get stronger or get himself killed.”
