“Hah!” Oboe yelled. His cry resounded through the surrounding cliffs on the beach as he drove his fist in a boulder around his own size. The rock shattered into innumerable bits and pieces upon impact and a quiet applause erupted from behind him.

“That was awesome!” Kuji shouted. “Can you teach me how to do that?”

Oboe turned around and walked over to Kuji. He placed his hand on the boy’s head and ruffled his antennae.

“I’ll show you when you get a little older,” he said.

Kuji smiled brightly and looked up at Oboe. He had come all the way from his village to meet Oboe. At first he rejected the kid and continued with his training, but then Kuji started to cry. Not wanting him to continue with his sobs, he decided to show Kuji a few of his techniques. It would not only give him a chance to practice, but it was a lot more motivating to have an audience.

“Can I ask you a favor?” Kuji asked.

“A favor? What is it?” Oboe replied.

“Well, there’s going to be a festival next week in honor of the village’s elder, and I’m supposed to bring some sort of gift. I was swimming in the ocean last week when I saw an enormous pearl in a cave. I really think it would make a great gift. Do you think you could go and get it for me?”

Oboe didn’t want to take a break from his training, but he also didn’t want to upset Kuji. In the end, his kindness gave way and he said, “Alright, I’ll go and get you the pearl. Where exactly did you see it?”

“I’m not really sure,” Kuji said nervously. “The water’s kind of murky and it’s hard to see.”

“Well, don’t worry about it then. I’ll go and try to find the pearl, just wait for me in the village and I’ll come give it to you,” Oboe told him.

Oboe looked out to the ocean below the rocky cliff behind him. It had been a while since he went swimming, and the last time he had been eaten alive by a monstrous fish. Still, he wasn’t nervous, and had an unusually confident look on his face. He pulled his shirt over his head and threw it on the ground beside him.

“I ought to be back in a little while,” Oboe said. He leapt off the cliff, plunging head fist into the water.

Oboe dove deep into the murky green water. The water was clouded and it was difficult to see more than a meter in front of him. The deeper he went, the smaller his field of vision became. Breathing, however, was the least of his problems. He could hold his breath for more than 10 minutes, an adaptation originally meant to help Namekians while spitting up eggs, though it proves just as useful while under water.

Before long, he thought he could see a faint glimmer of light. He steadily swam closer to it, the gleam getting brighter. As he drew nearer, he could make out the outline of what appeared to be a sort of orb, floating in the water. Then a large creature became visible, one with large, dagger-like teeth and luminescent eyes. It lashed out in an attempt to bit Oboe, getting one of his arms in his mouth and slicing it clean off. The water became thick with his violet blood, making it even harder to see. He kicked the beast in the face and used to momentum to return to the surface. He swam over to the shore, grasping what little was left of his arm with his other hand.

He sat down on the beach to catch his breath, panting heavily. The pain in his arm, while not agonizing, was extremely uncomfortable. But already, his arm was beginning to heal itself and blood stopped pouring out of the open wound.

Kuji was over on the other side of the beach, looking at some shells washed up on the shore. Oboe let out a dull moan and immediately attracted the boy’s attention. He quickly ran over to Oboe, and was drawn quickly to his severed arm.

“Oboe, are you okay?” Kuji asked in a kind voice.

Oboe looked at Kuji. Since Oboe was slumped on the sandy ground, the two were practically at eye level.

“I’m fine,” Oboe said. “This isn’t the first time this has happened anyway.”

“Is… is there anything I can do for you?” Kuji questioned.

“No, just give me a second,” Oboe replied.

Oboe focused intensely on the little that was left of his arm, concentrating as much ki as he could in that area. It started to lose its painful feeling, and started turning numb. Suddenly, it gained a tingling sensation and not even a second after that, a new slime covered limb shot out of what little was left of his arm. Oboe felt a sudden wave of exhaustion over come him, and he lay back on the beach panting. This was only the second time he had to regenerate a lost limb, and he was far from used to it. As feeling slowly returned to his arm, he sat up and looked back over at Kuji. He wiped his slime-covered arm on his shirt and then wiped his forehead with it.

“I ought to be just fine now,” Oboe said. “A little tired, but other than that, fine.”

“Just don’t get hurt again, alright?” Kuji said.

“Don’t worry, there’s nothing down there that could be a threat to me. Oboe stood up and waded back into the water. As soon as it reached his belt line, he dove back into the water and continued to swim around through the water, coming back up every few minutes for a breath of air. After returning to the depths for the fifth time, he once again saw a faint light, inside of what was apparently some sort of cave. Next to the light was something that was reflecting the light off of it, an enormous pure white pearl.

The light slowly moved closer to Oboe, apparently trying to stalk him, but forgetting that it was so bright. It moved within a few meters of him when he started to swim around it. The light moved with greater ease, as the creature it was attached to could maneuver more easily than he could. As it slowly approached him, it opened up its enormous jaws. Oboe used his ki in the same way he did to fly to propel him through the water in order to get closer to the object reflecting the fish’s light. As he got close enough to touch it, he swiftly turned around and raised his hands above his head. They began to glow with an intense blue aura before bringing them down in front of his chest.

“Masenko!” Oboe shouted.

An enormous blast of ki erupted from his hands, completely consuming the fish and illuminated the surrounding water for a fraction of a second. Oboe turned around again only to find that he could no longer see the pearl. Instead, he felt around the murky water and felt something smooth and round. At first, he tough it to be some sort of rock, but then realized it was likely too smooth. He grabbed hold of it and placed it under one arm. It was surprisingly heavy for a pearl, but far from being too heavy to lift up. He used the same method of pushing himself with his ki to move quickly through the water and up towards the surface. He took in a deep breath of air before floating above the surface, the water rippling with the force emitted by his ki. On the shore, he could see Kuji waving to him. Oboe sped off toward the boy, staying close to the water. The water seemed to split in two below him and the ocean spray making it difficult to see. He landed in front of Kuji and proudly displayed the pearl.

Kuji stared at the pearl, completely transfixed upon it. His jaw dropped with a loud, “Wow.”

“Well, what do you think?” Oboe asked.

“It’s perfect!” Kuji shouted. “Thanks so much.” Kuji opened his arms wide and gave Oboe an enormous hug. Oboe’s face blushed a pale violet, his face adorned with as disinterested an expression as he could muster.

“It’s no problem,” Oboe said. He handed the pearl over to Kuji and put his hand on his head. “As long as you don’t go looking for it yourself, it’s just fine.”

Kuji placed the pearl on the ground and pulled a few coins out of his pocket. “I-I don’t have very much money, but please take it,” he said. Kuji tried to hand it to Oboe, but he attempted to push it back.

“It’s not my money, I don’t need it,” Oboe said.

“Well, there’s nothing I could really buy with it anyway,” Kuji said. “If anyone needs it, I think you should have it. Maybe you could use it to buy something that’ll help you train better. Think of it as a gift.”

Oboe reluctantly accepted the money. His pants didn’t have any pockets to put it in, however, so he ended up just keeping it in his hands. “You need to stop being so generous, you know?” Oboe said playfully. “Now go take that back to the village and be careful with it. I don’t want you losing it.”

“It’s kind of hard to lose,” Kuji chuckled. “But I’ll take good care of it. What are you planning to do now?”

“I’m going to go back to training,” Oboe said.

“Do you ever do anything else?” Kuji asked. “Why don’t you come to the festival with me? You could use a break too.”

Oboe took a moment to ponder it for a moment. It certainly wouldn’t hurt to take a break. He had just come off of an exhausting fight with a fish twice his size. “All right, but after this, I’m going back to training,” Oboe said.

Kuji smiled and grabbed Oboe by the arm, dragging him off to his village.
