Tala sat legs crossed and eyes closed, finally finding some peace in what might be considered the late evening on other planets, but really Tala was completely unsure of the time. She didn’t understand how the namekians functioned on a planet with three suns and no obvious evening hours. Somehow, however, they managed, with mostly normal hours of rest.

She had desperately wanted this meditation time. Sometimes the exercise was painful, but she could feel herself growing with each session. She also wanted to get the hang of a certain phenomena that granted her awareness of nearby power levels. Guru had termed this “sensing” when she had explained it to him, and she was immediately intrigued. These mysterious powers were little known on Vegeta, as they were not moves that required force or the highest power level to use.

It was back to business, though. The saiyaness took a few deep breaths, pushing all thoughts from her mind. The abyss came easier and easier each time she meditated. There was peace there. It was as though her thoughts, fears, and distractions were completely separate from her. She was completely connected with her ki: her purest form of self.

This time her mind strayed, however. It was a rare occurrence, but it happened often enough and she knew not to fight it. She continued to watch as planet Vegeta materialized around her. She was somewhere in the wasteland… She assumed she had been training. The girl was very young, it seemed, as her hair covered up most of her face. She had long been grown into it.

As she was trying to grasp the time period, the image of her father appeared. He was looking down at her with his seemingly disinterested midnight eyes.

“All right, Tala. Are you ready to continue?”

Tala knew exactly when this had taken place. It was about six years before her father’s death. She had been 8 or 9 at the time. He had been a strange mesh between a caring parent and a merciless teacher. It had never been an issue for Tala, however, and all-in-all it was the saiyan way to be strict with one’s child, especially regarding her training.

Her father had a medium build on the saiyan scale (wherein a small saiyan was about the size of a toned human). His hair went down to the middle of his back and was rather messy on the top. Her mother had always talked to Tala about what a stud he had been back in the day.

“Not that he was ever old enough to have his day,” Tala thought to herself.

Tala’s parents had been an odd couple. Her mother was the stronger one, with a fighting power whereabouts of 14,000, while her father trailed somewhere above 12,000. They were both amazing warriors, though, and spars were rarely one-sided. Tala smiled, knowing that her fighting style was her father’s, while her temper was her mother’s.

The young Tala had wiped some blood from her nose and nodded, taking a fighting stance. She was clearly tired, but it didn’t matter much to her. She was going to be strong like her mom and dad, no matter what. Even at a young age she had noticed the respect her parents garnered from any public place they entered.

Her father came at her in the same instant that she nodded. He was powered up to about 1,200 to challenge Tala’s almost 900 power level. No one in her family had ever been much of a prodigy; they had worked for their fighting power. Despite her fatigue, Tala was doing rather well. It was somewhat easy for her to dodge thanks ot her size, and she could outrun her father at that age while he was powered down for training, though outfighting was still an issue.

She seemed rather pleased with herself when her ducking and dodging was interrupted by a painful tugging at her rear. Her father had grabbed her tail and was watching her dangle upside down, his eyes neither amused nor angry, but his voice was firm.

“What did I tell you to do with your tail, Tala?”

The saiyaness sniffed and pointed to her waist. Her father cracked a smile and dropped her, adding a few new scrapes to her ever-growing collection.

“Ready, go!”

He was punching at her again and even faster this time. It was all Tala could do to keep up. She gulped and gasped and groaned as she ducked and darted. Training could go on like this for hours, and it often did. These sessions were no doubt the beginnings of Tala’s stamina-building.

The memory faded, leaving Tala with the abyss once more. This time it echoed with a lonesome pain.
