Standing before Grand Elder Guru, Trumpet wondered why he had been called for in the midst of his daily exercise routine. It was unusual for the Elder to call in anyone without an apparent reason, especially a young, inexperienced apprentice. Never doubting Guru’s decisions, though, he had come in all the same, leaving his exercise for later.

“Trumpet…” said the Grand Elder telepathically. He always spoke in such a fashion with his people, because his voice was laborious to produce at his age. “You are wondering why I have you in here now, aren’t you?”

Unsurprised at his Elder’s ability to read his emotions, Trumpet nodded; not that Guru could see through his closed eyes. “Yes, Elder, I am quite unaware of what you require from me at this time,” he replied respectfully.

A half cough/half wheeze chuckle escaped Guru’s ancient and cracked lips. “You have been in training to become one of my bodyguards for nearly a century, and the only reason you have yet to be given the position is because you keep turning it down saying you aren’t strong enough yet. Already you are beginning to rival Kizu’s own strength despite your young age. As one of the greater namekian students, I feel it is time you entered the final test.”

Taking everything Guru said in stride, Trumpet bowed. “Anything you wish, Elder. I do not agree, but I will respect any decision you make all the same,” he forced himself to say. Although he knew what his Elder said was the truth, it didn’t mean he felt ready to complete his training with Elder Struv any more than he had a century ago.
“I am glad you are able to move on, but don’t do it for my sake. The choice is yours alone. So that you know what you are to do, your final test will be to defeat each of the Village Elders in a contest of their choosing, whether it is a battle, game of riddles, or even a race from one place to another. Do you accept this, Trumpet?” Guru returned, shifting very slightly in his great throne.

Trumpet listened to what Guru said, and it actually spiked a small amount of excitement in him. The chance to defeat the four village elders in their own game was too good to pass up, even if success meant he’d no longer have Elder Struv as a master. “Yes, Grand Elder, I will accept this quest.” With another slight bow, Trumpet turned around and stepped onto the rising platform, which lowered him to the ground level.

Kizu, along with two other body guards, was in this mostly bare room. “Good luck,” commented the head bodyguard, who had so long been the very elite of their race. “Perhaps soon I will give you my own test.”

Trumpet grinned before walking out of the door. “We’ll see about that, Kizu!” he called back to the friendly warrior.

Having met and gotten to know a little about all four of the elders, Trumpet stopped for a moment outside of Guru’s hut, trying to decide which he would go to first. Polik was the most powerful of them, and Narenka the most wise and cunning. Cir was the fastest Elder, and Rodol had high attributes all around, though he excelled in nothing. Trumpet knew that Narenka would put him through some kind of mental gauntlet that would be challenging enough as is, and near impossible if he were physically drained from battling Polik, or racing Cir, so he chose to go to Chazke Village first.

Chazke Village was actually fairly close to Guru’s home, so the flight there was short, even though it felt longer. The entire time all Trumpet could think about was what Elder Narenka would challenge him with. Quiz him on the Namekian Language? Test him on his Namekian History? Knowing Narenka it could be anything, really.

Knowing he would have to take whatever came at him whether he was prepared or not, Trumpet relaxed himself both mentally and physically as he landed just outside of Chazke Village, known both for producing higher than average intelligence, and great plump fish, many of which Trumpet had eaten before.

He found Narenka talking to an even older namekian in the center of the village. Seeing it reminded him that just because the four namekians were called the Elders, they were not at all the oldest of the race, Elder Polik was quite young himself; about three hundred years or so.

Respectfully, Trumpet waited until Narenka and the older fellow were finished talking, and the latter had walked away before addressing the wise old elder. “Elder Narenka,” he said with a quick bow. “Guru has sent me to-“

Waving a hand, Narenka cut him off. “Guru has sent you to be tested by the four elders, and to complete your training in the process. I have already had word from Guru, and your evaluation is set. Follow me.”

Surprised at the Elder’s unusual hurry, Trumpet followed Narenka, wondering what the challenge may be again. Mentally, he reviewed his knowledge of his race’s history, and the namekian language, forcing himself to remember things long forgotten to aid him during his trials.

Narenka chose to walk, but luckily they were only going to the Elder’s hut on the outside of the village. Upon entering, Trumpet noticed a single bodyguard, and actually recognized him as a mischievous child called Putal that he had met many years ago. Gleaming on a pedestal at the back of the hut was a dragonball, one of the seven, and with two stars in this particular case.

“Putol, could you please wait outside?” Narenka called to the silent bodyguard as he sat down in a large chair. The namekian nodded and walked outside to stand by the door. This only made Trumpet even more curious as to what Narenka had planned for him.

“Elder Narenka I-“ Trumpet began, only to be cut off again as his Elder motioned for him to sit down across from him.

“As I know the suspense is killing you, I’ll tell you the object of your test,” Narenka said, making Trumpet sit on the edge of his seat. “You are to defeat me in a game of riddles; something I have not lost since my childhood. If you can do that, I will consider you a pass, and allow you to move on to the other Elders. Are you up to the challenge?”

Not totally surprised by the turn events, although totally unprepared, Trumpet nodded. “Yes, Elder, I take the challenge. Even at my age, I understand that a warrior must be more than brawn to stand up to his enemies and protect those he loves. I shall begin if you’re okay with it,” the young namekian replied. With a smile on his old and wrinkled face, Narenka motioned for his counterpart to continue.

As he had spoken, Trumpet had formed a simple riddle in his head, and although he knew it wouldn’t be good enough to beat his teacher, it would buy him time to think of a better one. “I have holes in my top and bottom, in my left and right, and in my middle, yet I still hold water. What am I?”

Still smiling, Narenka replied, “You’re a sponge, of course. My turn; I am light as a feather, yet the strongest namekian can’t hold me for long; what am I?” The simplicity of the riddle told Trumpet that the Elder was utilizing the same technique that he was; to use simple riddles while you thought of one impossible one. He forced himself to think harder, as he now realized he must think of his riddle before Narenka did.

“You’re air. All around, but cannot be seen, can be captured, cannot be held, no throat, but can be heard, what am I?” Trumpet knew this one was just a play on of Narenka’s last one, but he was really focused on his great riddle now, and didn’t bother to think of even a decent one for this sort of word foreplay.

Narenka shook his head. “Now you’re just being too easy, Trumpet. That’s the wind, of course. Until I am measured, I am not known, but oh you will miss me, once I have flown!” For this one, Trumpet didn’t immediately have an answer, but still he found it pretty quickly, although he realized Narenka had his one riddle completed in his mind, and was now just enjoying the game before using it.

Luckily, Trumpet realized, he too had his great riddle, he just hadn’t understood it right off. Taking in a quick breath, he put his riddle to the test. “I never was, am always to be, no one ever saw me, nor ever will, and yet I am confidence of all, to live an breath on this terrestrial ball, what am I?”

Frowning, Narenka sat against the back of his chair, stroking his chin. The riddle had truly stumped him, and it bothered him so. After a few minutes, he finally gave in. “You have beaten me, I do not know the answer to your riddle. You have completed my test, now go to see Polik, he will give you the next evaluation. Good luck, Trumpet,” Narenka said.

The younger namekian stood up and bowed, then turned and walked out. Just before he was out of the door, he heard Narenka clear his throat behind him. Looking back, he saw the look on his Elder’s face. “The answer was tomorrow, if you were wondering.” For a second Narenka compared the answer to Trumpet’s riddle, then smiled as it came together, and gave the young warrior a nod.

Pleased with his own performance, Trumpet walked outside, gave a nod to Putol, and rose into the air before going forward like a jet towards Ishnuk Village, to the East of Chakze.
