I think we've all had this happen to us once or twice. We walk into the local GameStop or other video game retailer, (or just go buy it online or something) play it for a while, and then talk to our friends about it. Then they respond with a comment like "Really? I've never heard of it." Truly great games are terribly underapprciated by mainstream audiences a lot of the time. What games do you think suffer the worst from this. When I think of a game like this, three words come to mind: Elite Beat Agents. It's the strangest music/rhythm based game you will ever play, involving 3 government agents who save the world with the power of music. And oddly enough, it's one of the best games I've ever played. If you think that's weird, you should take a look at it's Japanese counterpart "Ossu! Takatae! Ouendan!" which involves cheerleaders as opposed to agents. Ouendan was a huge hit over seas and caused a lot of imports (which is probably why we got EBA over here in the first place) and even spawned a sequel. However, we'll likely never see another American Elite Beat Agents due to the low sales. It's such a shame. There are a few other gems out there. Okami is a personal favorite of mine, a Zelda style adventure taking a few leafs out of the pages of Japanese mythology. I belive it recieved a "Game of the Year" award from some magazine. However, it's just so incredibly Japanese that most people don't bother picking it up because they'll look like a Japanophile if they play it. Beneath the surface of an incredibly Asian looking art style lies a grand adventure that's certainly deserving of a Game of the Year title. However, a lot of it could probably only be appreciated if you have a little knowldege of the country's mythology, as there are many references to Japanese mythological texts in it. This game wasn't completely ignored, but it probably should have had better sales. The entire Dragon Quest series is horribly underrated here in America. In Japan it sells just as well as Final Fantasy, but a lot of people here have never heard of it. It's probably my favorite RPG series to be honest. The recent release of Dragon Quest IX and the heavy advertising for it might change that soon enough, especially considering we know they're already working on another DQ game for the 3DS. And lastly, there's always a spot in my heart for a niche little JRPG known as Magical Starsign. As the title suggests, it's an unusual mixture between fantasy and sci-fi, but they blend rather well in this game. How many other times have you seen a robot use magic? What really stood out about this game for me was the ending, though. It was pretty emotional and rather well thought out. Unusually enough, this game happened to be made by Nintendo, yet it still sold rather poorly. So, now that I've gotten through with a few paragraphs of talking about unappreciated video games, what games do you think deserve more attention? |

Hmm, well, I have a few. First, Skies of Arcadia Legends. This remake of the Dreamcast game was incredible, but I've noticed that unless a person was a big Dreamcast fan, they have no idea what this game is. The ship battle mechanics were just amazing and the story even led you on a bit before giving out the real events. Plus, being a bounty-hunting pirate is fun. ![]() Next, Super Robot Taisen. I would love to see this game series hit the American shores. It is seriously fun from the dirty humor of the characters to the awesome mechs displayed in it to the Gundam-esque storyline. This is a Japanese series that I only got to play because I found a ROM of it for the two GBA games that have been translated into English(Original Generation and Original Generation 2). But in all seriousness, it is like taking your favorite tactics game and using mechs instead(giant robot fights, FTW!!!) Another one is the Lufia series. Even at the pinnacle of Super Nintendo's stardom, this series wasn't really looked at because other, more popular, games like Final Fantasy IV and Chrono Trigger had come out. Yet, Lufia was a great series, especially the second one(which is set as a prequel to the original game). I love Lufia and have actually played and beaten Lufia II five or six times because of my love for it. XD Finally, Summon Night. From what I have seen, not many people here in America actually know what this game is, although it is a surprisingly fun series. I have played the two Swordcraft Story games(only beaten the first, though), and I like how the game works. I especially like the humor of them, since in the first one my character had a guardian spirit partner that constanty hit on him and made comments about their impending marriage. Anyways, the story for both games was somewhat complex, since for 70% of the game, you really have no idea what is going on, even though your pops was neck-deep in whatever is causing the problems in the world(this is the same for both games).Anyways, those are the underappreciated games of my lists. I would have added Metroid, but ever since Metroid Prime, it has been receiving a lot of acclaim. In reality, though, before Metroid Prime came out, no one I knew had ever heard of Metroid(save one friend I had who moved away a while back). And yes, I love me some Super Metroid. *still has a working SNES* ^_^; |

Radiata Stories Such a fun game that's really under the radar as far as Square Soft games go. I found the story to be unique and entertaining, and the fighting system was fun. Robotech: Battlecry I'm really unsure how well known this game actually is... but it's simply amazing. The story follows the Macross Saga, and your character flies along side Rick Hunter and Maximillion... all the events that take place are parallel to the events of the Macross Saga and it really made me feel like I was a part of the series. The controls for the mech are THE BEST I've ever experienced. You can use all three forms of the Veritech fighter, and the controls are so precise that it really feels like you're flying the machine. And it's DIFFICULT. One of the few games I've played that I haven't beat on the hardest setting... and I tried... this game didn't leave my PS2 for close to three years. I played it every single day. In fact, I might just fire up the PS2 and start the story over. |

I only ever had one truly underrated game: Alien Hominid for the PS2. It was a side-scrolling arcade shooter made by freelancers from newgrounds.com, and was based off a simple flash game. Good times

Lost Odyssey. It is one of the best JRPGs ever made. It is in my top 5 RPGs of all time and yet it didn't review well, I think it got like a 75 on Metacritic ors omething, and it didn't sell well, I think it sold around 800,000. EVERYBODY with an Xbox 360 needs to play it. |

Legend of Dragoon. A lot of people call it a Final Fantasy rip-off (which I really don't understand). I loved the story, the transformations were awesome, and the characters were cool. |

To be fair Alex, if Lost Odyssey's what I'm thinking of, it's pretty much the exact same game as FFX |

It's nothing like FFX so I guess you are thinking of a different game. FFX was bad. |
