I submit for your approval, two screen-shots of Mr. Radish Head.

This one was taken from Remastered DBZ footage.

My thoughts-

I really like the extra 20% you get in the Dragon Box footage (which was cropped from the top and bottom of the remastered version to make it 16:9... thanks for that info Oboe!).

But I like the colors of the remastered DBZ better... Dragon Box seems a little washed out, ya know? And on my 56" HDTV display (1080p HDMI output from Nvidia graphics card) the grainy appearance is very pronounced in comparison to the Remastered DBZ.

Also... what's up with the Dragon Box set only having the original Japanese score? Don't get me wrong... I like being able to watch the original backing music. But the Remastered set has BOTH the original score and the FUNimation music as audio track options. I've watched both, and while both are good, I prefer to watch DBZ with the FUNimation track (probably because that's how I first experienced it).

Both are great... but I don't think I'll be replacing my Remastered set with Dragon Box.

What do you guys think?

The remastered version the colors are really bright. Some people hate that, I kind of like it. The one HUUUUUUUUUUGE downside is that the image was cropped 20% (10% from the top and 10% from the bottom) so sometimes you actaully lose important parts of the picture. Other times, the picture got messed up like Nappa's teeth coming out of his mouth but you can't really notice it just watching it normally.

So as for image quality, the Dragon Box wins.

But as for audio, it gets owned because it doesn't have Faulconers Americanized music that I have come to know and love for DBZ. Therefore, even with all the image bullshit, I'd rather watch the remastered versions.

Yeah the American music rocks so much harder than the original Jap. It reminds me of when I would come home from school. Every day I would turn that shit on, and that bad ass song "Rock the Dragon" would be playing, and I would be scarfing down white rice like I was Goku.

Ahh, the good old days......

Anyway, I voted that I didn't care........ if any of you care.

FTW! PEACE!

I find that which one you purchase often depends on whether you like the series dubbed or subbed. Most dub fans like the Faulconer track, which is absent from the Dragon Boxes. This doesn't affect me in the slightest since I watch it in Japanese. Also, there's the factor of whether or not you've already purchased the series. Many Dragon Ball fans I've met own some 4 releases of the series in America. (In addition to old fansubs from before FUNimation owned the series sometimes) If you're not willing to shell out some extra cash and already purchased the Orange Bricks, this probably isn't something you'll want to pick up unless you really like it.

I've always preffered the Dragon Boxes' remastering. I've never owned any of the Orange Bricks myself, but I do have the "Blue Bricks" for the original Dragon Ball. The picture quality really does look nicer on the Dragon Boxes in my opinion. It's less oversaturated. A 80's/90's anime should look more like an 80's/90's anime than being oversaturated in an attempt to mimic the brighter colors of more modern series.

The Dragon Box really does cater to fans of the Japanese version, though. The Faulconer score supposedly isn't on there because it would take up disc space and cause the quality of the footage to degrade. (Which is actually true to a degree) Unlike the season sets, the Japanese audio is remastered, which is one of the reasons I really wouldn't take anything else.

On the side, there's just genuinely a lot of nice things about the Dragon Boxes' presentation that I'm fond of. They hold up a lot better than other sets I have for the series. My first Dragon Ball season set has already fallen apart. There's a translation of the Dragon Book found in the Japanese release of the sets as well, which serve as a pretty handy episode guide since I don't always have an internet connection on hand while I'm watching the series.

In all honesty, I actually didn't pick up the Orange Bricks because I knew that I didn't like the picture quality. For the longest time, I was actually planning on picking up the Dragon Box singles released in Japan, which by the way cost a fortune, because I know it's better suited to me. I can watch the series unsubtitled with no problem because I know the series better than the back of my hand by this point in time. The FUNimation just dropped the bomb and said "Okay guys, we're releasing the Dragon Box." On sites that I visit that are heavily into the Japanese version of the series, there was much rejoicing needless to say.

I couldn't be happier with the Dragon Box release. I just wish they had done it instead of the Orange Bricks, though. (possibly with inclusion of the Faulconer track just to make the dubbies happy) Because the season sets are so popular, it makes those of us who are snatching these up like candy wonder of FUNimation will even put out the entire series this way. I mean, they have a habit of milking the series for all it's worth, but if it's not profitable for them, they might not continue it.

Now if only there were something reminscent of a Dragon Box for Yu Yu Hakusho so I'd finally know what to buy for that... <_<
