In one of several small villages scattered across the green peaceful planet of Namek one who was decidedly not at peace began to stir. Matsuhito Gosai. Self-styled hero was slowly regaining feeling in his limbs. Almost two months ago he'd landed on this planet and battled the changeling tyrant Chill.

Clearly, it had not gone as planned. Wounded, his body broken, his spirit nearly shattered with the destruction the monster had wrought against him he likely would have died in the mud. Thousands of light-years from his home. His family never to learn of his fate.

But no. Gosai is a survivor...

Even when he doesn't wish to be.

---Two Months Ago---

The battered Matsuhito heir lay on the ground, splattered with a combination of mud and blood. His left eye already swollen shut, his right leg turned at an unnatural angle, the fingers of his right hand twisted and bent from the duration of his fight. He coughed, burying his face further into the mud, rain pelting him.

His uninjured hand, if it could really be called that with cracking joints and the ache running through his whole body, reached forward, clawing at the muck as he attempted to pull himself away from the sight of his defeat. Of his near demolition. From his 'good' eye he could watch the twitching of his hand. Even wounded, he was strong enough to pull himself forward inch by inch.

The progress was slow. Painstaking. With many halts and re-starts as he passed out, only to wake up back where he was. He much preferred the dreams of his unconsciousness. In them, he was back on Earth doing what he did best. Well... one of two things he did best.

Slipping off into unconsciousness again he could hear the agitated cries of 'Pervert!' all in various female tones.

In the dream, he was running across the road, grinning to himself while what looked like an entire female sports team were chasing after him. Which makes sense, as he'd just been found out attempting to peek on them while they were changing in the locker rooms.

"Oh come on, girls!" He shouted over his shoulder, jumping over a fence with a grin. "It was a compliment! You're hot!"

"Just get back here and take your lumps!" One of the girls shouted, within the dream it was the familiar face of Azumi. Keeping up with his movements with some difficulty she perched briefly on a fence post before jumping upwards, planting a flying kick on the back of the boy's head. She landed on one foot, watching with a triumphant grin as he crashed into a nearby tree, groaning.

"My noooose..." Gosai groaned, sliding to the ground, looking upwards as his field of vision was engulfed by angry female faces. "...Well, crap." He sighed as the fists and shouts began once more.

Gosai's next glimpse of the waking world came what appeared to be a few hours after his dream had ended. He could only guess at this fact when he realized that the hot Namekian suns were beating down on him, the storm his battle with Chill had called up having long since dissipated. The dirt had dried, and the mud on his cheeks and hands was already in the process of flaking off.

"H-help..." He croaked. Another clue as to how long it had been. His throat was painfully dry. Stretching out with his senses he could feel... nothing. Not the kind of 'nothing' that accompanied a lack of presence, but the kind of 'nothing' that he felt before he could sense ki.

"Too scrambled." The young human mumbled in response to this realization. He couldn't gather the focus needed to scan the area. All he could feel was the aches of bone, and the thirst in his mouth. Wracking his brain, and steeling his resolve he attempted once more to stand up. A sudden pain in his leg immediately caused Gosai to reconsider that option before he collapsed again.

"So... this is how... it ends?" He asked himself, struggling to roll onto his back, staring upwards at the clouds of Namek. "I die out here, alone? No family... no friends around me. Heh, I guess I just... wasn't meant to be a hero, was I?" He continued talking, speaking whatever thoughts he had aloud in an effort to prevent himself from falling asleep. If he was really going to die out here... he wanted to face it with as much awareness as he could manage.

"Help me..." He croaked once more. His body was telling him to give up, but in his mind... he simply wasn't ready to die, even now.

"I want to live..." He mumbled, trailing off as he lost consciousness yet again.

---

"Is that so?" Almost as soon as the human's eyes were shut the voice had invaded his mind. It was one he already knew easily enough. The monster that had caused his injuries. Chill. It was a slow drawling sound and form soon followed noise. "What exactly do you have that's worth living for, human?" The not-quite Chill asked, and Gosai had the sensation of a powerful hand around his throat.

"Still too much... haven't seen." He mumbled. Was it a lame reason? Maybe. But as addled as his mind was he could barely come up with that, let alone anything better.

"Just to see things?" Chill queried, his grip tightening. "You really are pathetic. No goal. No direction. That's why you lost here." In the darkness of the dream world, he felt himself tugged towards Chill's face. Or maybe the figure was simply growing larger. Lacking much of his physical sensation it was hard to tell.

"I have a mission." Chill declared. "A destiny. What do you have? A broken ship, a dead Namek, and a few almost dead humans. I won the most important victory of all. I broke you. Crushed your spirit."

"That's not-" He paused halfway through his protestation. Could he really claim he wasn't 'broken'?

And what did it say about him that it only took a single defeat, granted a devastating one, to 'break' him?

The changeling tyrant seemed to be smirking at him despite the armored appearance of his face. And slowly he began to fade away. Leaving the human martial artist standing alone in the blackness of his mind.
His despair.

-In the land of the living again-

"Mission..." The human mumbled, still lost in his own mind as a new figure entered upon the scene. One who was drawn towards the aftermath of combat between two massive power levels. A Namekian. Older looking. He placed a hand on the human, watching him hiss in pain as he applied pressure.

"How are you alive, my friend?" He whispered to himself, looking back the several dozen yards he had pulled himself from the ship, his body had left a trail leading back to where the changeling had dropped him. Finally, he shook his head. His course of action clear. The wrinkled green face sagged a bit as he realized he couldn't simply allow the boy to die out here. Raising his hand upward he watched the human as he likewise worse into the air.

"Still got it." He mused, regarding his use of telekinesis, observing the boy floating in the air. "But what got you? And were you the hero or the villain?" He asked, shaking his head again before he took upwards to the sky. "Let's get you out of the sun either way."

---

"I gave you a way out." The voice was lilting. Feminine. And like Chill's, intimately familiar to Gosai at this point. Suigentou. "All you had to do was say 'yes' and you could have avoided all of that pain. You might have even gotten the chance to stay a hero."

Unlike Chill, she seemed to manifest no physical form. It was a voice coming from everywhere. Without a point to focus on, the human quickly found out it was harder to try and ignore 'her' words.

"Your friends wouldn't even have been hurt, you know. Lord Chill only attacked them to distract you. If you could simply have... cooperated, everyone would be happy right now. Who knows, we could even have had some fun together."

"Somehow... I doubt that." Gosai mumbled, accepting the hallucinations as they were coming to him now.

"Of all sad words, on tongue or pen... the saddest are these: it might have been." Suigentou's voice took on a sing-song quality as she continued to needle at him. After a moment there was a pause before she spoke again. "Did you actually see them anywhere? Do you think your friends abandoned you when you weren't able to save them?"

"No!" He shouted into the darkness. But once again... the blood had been drawn.

"You couldn't save them." She reminded him. "They had to escape, they could have used you as a distraction. But... injured like that? Who knows if any of them are alive now." The voice was thoughtful, musing. "Ahh, I'm sure you wouldn't want them to see you this way anyhow."

-Among the conscious again-

"Well, you seem to be in quite the situation." The middle-aged Namekian mused, watching the injured human twisting and turning on the small bed he'd laid him out on. "But, we can't have you doing more harm to yourself, can we?" He murmured before holding his hands outward. With a small flex of his ki and even a bit of magic he soon had Gosai bound to the sleeping area, held still with his twisted body immobile.

"Now... how exactly do I work on you, hm? This could take a while..."

Fortunately, the mind can only exert it's own torments upon a man so long. And Gosai found himself eventually receding away from the recollections and conjecture of Chill and the fates of his friends. To the watchful eyes of the Namekian healer, the boy had been pleasantly asleep while he worked on him... largely through trial and error...

Crack!

"Oh dear." The healer sighed, realizing he'd turned the human's leg a bit too far to the left. "The placement of that knee is just one problem after another." He mumbled, looking over Gosai, who 'mysteriously' seemed more injured than when he'd arrived. Particularly around joints that had initially been damaged. "You wouldn't think a Namek-oid species like this would be so hard to patch up." He mused.

---

"Matsuhito Gosai! Prepare to defend yourself!" A shrill shout called to the boy as he looked around. A bright sunny day. He was on Earth, as though none of the past few weeks had happened. Instead, he found himself facing down a somewhat unfamiliar opponent holding a bokken pointed in his direction. "Your actions towards my sister have been inexcusable!" he called out.

"What? A quick peeping?" Gosai queried, jumping over a swipe of the wooden blade. "Or the actual flirting?" He asked, ducking below a second one. Or... it would have been a successful duck if it were a horizontal swipe. Instead, the vertical strike smacked firmly into the top of Gosai's head, dazing the young man as he slumped forward. However, instinct took over and he pitched himself further forward, rolling.

Throwing his feet outward he planted them firmly against his opponent's stomach. "Look, buddy, you can't get mad at something for following their nature. Cats are gonna hunt, perverts are gonna perv." He commented idly.

"Tch... no martial honor!?" The dark haired swordsman called out, lifting up the bokken as though to thrust straight downward with it. A moment later a dust cloud was launched into the air around the two as the wooden blade struck the ground like a jackhammer.

On the ground, Gosai had curled himself, donut like around the impact site of the sword. "Holy crap! Y'know, you could end up hurting someone like this!"

"I know! And I'm hoping it'll be YOU!" He declared.

-Amongst the waking world-

The Namekian healer shook his head, wrapping a bandage around the injured human's own cranium. "Now, what are you smiling about my friend?"

After several nights of restless slumber under the 'careful' hands of the healer, Gosai groaned at last, slowly coming to himself. The Namekian stirred from the seat he'd been in, consulting several anatomy textbooks as he looked at the ever-increasing pile of bandages around Gosai's body. "Oh! You're awake. Ahaha, how nice... How... nice." He commented, shifting his eyes a bit.

Oh, I hope he doesn't remember how bad he was before I found him...

"My name is Dizi. I am the most eminent doctor on Planet Namek. Well... the most eminent one that lacks the power to heal with a touch. Either way, I saved you." He declared making a grand gesture towards Gosai, offering a smile.

Gosai held still for a moment before attempting to shift in his position. All at once the situation hit him. Nerves were on fire. "Gaaaaah!" He screamed as he jerked around, realizing he was secured to the bed he'd been healing in. "What the hell Doc!? I hurt more than when I last passed out!" He called in pain.

"Er... well, you move a lot. You hurt yourself more." Dizi insisted, scratching the back of his head with a nervous smile.

"I'm strapped down." Gosai observed, jerking his 'good' arm in an attempt to test his restraints. "Pretty tightly too."

"Well yes, now you are." Dizi commented lamely. "Still, it's good you're alright. I was getting worried about you. There's only so long you can let someone sleep before you have to figure out what they require to sustain themselves." He added. As if on cue, Gosai's stomach began growling angrily, demanding to be given the chance to 'sustain' Gosai immediately.

"...Well... I suppose I could use some food." he admitted, testing his restraints again. He felt at less than a quarter of his former ability and such found himself unable to break his bonds.

Dizi nodded, standing up. "I'll go and see what I can get you." he assured Gosai before pausing. "Uh... does your species eat too, or just drink?"

Gosai's eyes fell into a somewhat condescending half-lidded form. "Humans eat. Particularly me. I'll eat just about anything."

"Ah, good! Then this wont take long at all." He assured the human before departing from the room, humming some song as he did so.

"It's gonna be a long few weeks, isn't it?" Gosai groaned, trying to get himself comfortable.

It took a while, but Gosai eventually found himself staring down into a bowl of salad. If that salad was made out of grass and leaves pulled from the lawn outside. "...I don't think you quite understand what 'food' is." He mumbled, prodding his meal with a crude fork.

"You said you would eat just about anything." Dizi defended himself, casting an annoyed look at Gosai. "Besides, you're a long way from being able to hunt or gather food for yourself, so you'll have to make due." He pointed out to Gosai, leaning back in his own seat, picking up a glass of water. "So just eat."

With an eyebrow raised, the Matsuhito heir sighed and began attempting to eat the... foliage. It was hard to get down, but hungry as he was... Gosai was just glad to finally be eating anything.

"You're having trouble holding the fork." Dizi finally commented, observing Gosai's shaking hand carefully. "Are you alright?"

"Kinda. It's... tingly. Like my hand fell asleep." Gosai admitted, watching the fork slip out of his hand and onto the table. His annoyance quickly became visible. "Oh come on! Nerve damage!? Really!?" He growled, slamming his hand down on the table, leaving a crack on it, but... despite the pain he felt upon waking up he felt nothing now. Just the usual tingling accompanying a limb that had gone to sleep.

Dizi paused for only a moment before moving closer to Gosai, tapping on a few pressure points. "Odd. Can you feel any of that?" He mumbled, looking at the human gagging in front of him. "Uh... are you okay?" He asked looking down at him.

"Gack!" He groaned, pointing to his mouth, his face slowly turning red. Dizi stared at him uncomprehendingly for a few moments before his eyes shot open and he began to strike points on his back again.

His breathing no longer obstructed by whatever pressure point he'd been afflicted by the human fighter began inhaling air rapidly. Of course, he'd already passed out...

"I really need a better human anatomy book." Dizi sighed.

Once more, the dreamworld beckons our hapless hero...

"Time to wake up." He heard the wizened voice of his grandfather chiding. And then felt the wizened foot of his grandfather kicking him off of his futon.

"Why can't you just wait for me to get up!?" he demanded angrily, looking up at Enoki. The elder Matsuhito's appearance was the same as ever. If he had the insight to realize he was dreaming he'd probably have placed this 'era' for just before he'd sought out Master Roshi. The only odd thing was why so many of his 'mentors' had a habit of kicking him out of his bed for early morning training.

"If I waited for you to get up, you'd be starting your training just before dinner boy." The old man chuckled, moving to the door. "Now, I'll expect you out by the dojo in ten minutes ready to start training."

"Yeah, yeah." He grumbled, rolling over on the floor to stare at the ceiling for a moment before pushing himself back onto his feet. The younger male stretched for a moment, looking around. Once again, he found himself uncertain if he was dreaming now or earlier. Still, he walked forward, leaving the room and the house behind to eventually find his way to the dojo.

"You're rusty!" Enoki shouted as a rabbit punch struck the boy in the cheek, forcing Gosai into a hasty retreat as the elder martial artist pressed his advantage launching a flurry of fast strikes at him.

"You're insane, old man!" Gosai called back, doing his best to ward off the blows but still, far more than he would have liked continued to slip through his guard and strike quite painfully along his body.

"You'll never keep up with me at this rate." The old man laughed, sweeping his legs out with a low roundhouse.

"Just the first round." Gosai protested, already pushing up to his feet, the exhaustion of just 'waking up' already forgotten to him. In stubborn determination he launched himself at his grandfather the all the fervor of youth... only to be quickly shut down as Enoki grabbed hold of his younger assailant's wrist and sent him crashing headlong into a nearby wall.

"So, was that the second round then?" Enoki taunted, beginning to roll up the sleeves of his own gi.

"S-still only round one..." He declared.

Time is a strange and unpredictable thing in the dreamworld. A factor that Gosai had scarcely had time to comprehend before it took it's effect. In the midst of sparring with his grandfather, the young man found himself seated at a small table between the elder Matsuhito and a young woman of similar height to himself. This particular young woman was dressed in a loose fitting shirt and pants, smiling serenely as she moved dark hair from her eyes. It was a relaxing sight, even in a 'hallucination' for Gosai to be able to see his sister again.

"I'm glad Grandpa didn't hurt you too badly, Go-Chan." She offered merrily, as she watched him take his share of the rice... and perhaps a bit of Enoki's share as well.

"Ha, you know me. I'm indestructible." Gosai declared boldly, doing his best to ignore the rather diminutive nickname his sibling had long ago adopted for him.

"Is that a fact?" Enoki ventured, prodding the young man's ribs with his chopsticks. Like lighting the younger Matsuhito fell onto his other side, clutching at the sore bones.

"The hell was that all about, old man!?" He shouted, jumping quickly to his feet as he got eye to eye with his erstwhile mentor. Enoki's response was to the point as he picked up his tea.

"You should never boast about something you are not prepared to back up immediately." He informed Gosai simply, ignoring his grandson's glowering while Megumi simply chuckled to herself in the background.

"One of these days old man, you're going in a home." Gosai threatened before flopping back down to resume his meal.

"And I'll be dragging you there with me." Enoki replied somewhat nonsensically as he picked up his rice bowl again. "Maybe one day you'll be near my ability but it certainly isn't today." He added with a laugh.

Gosai merely grumbled his response looking down into his rice as well. "Maybe I'll go find the Turtle Hermit then." He declared simply, re-enacting his role in this dream... or perhaps at this point it was more of a flashback? Was there really much of a difference?

As much as Gosai would have liked to stay in the land of his dreams cold reality quickly pulled him back as he sputtered awake looking into the only vaguely concerned eyes of the Namekian healer. "What happened...?" He mumbled.

"My, humans are quite a fragile species. Pat their back a couple of times and they pas out." Dizi shook his head, attempting to conceal his use of pressure points on the human. "But, at least you're beginning to recover."

"Why is it I feel a lot worse than I started out then?" Gosai queried, trying to sit back up. His body still felt awkward, the muscles were straining from limited use and probably any amount of damage they'd taken during his battle with Chill...

and his subsequent 'healing' by his self-appointed caretaker.

"That just means the enzymes are working." Dizi declared triumphantly.

"What enzymes?" Gosai blinked, finally managing to stand up, shakily, on his own two feet.

"...Mistranslation." Dizi told him simply, turning away from Gosai. "Now then, why don't you tell me how you got in this condition in the first place?" He suggested, pulling a chair towards his human guest.

Gosai sighed before flopping into the seat, shutting his eyes as he decided to comply with his host's request. "A fight. A big one." He admitted. Thinking back to the visions of Chill in his mind's eye. Declaring he'd broken Gosai.

Was it so far from the truth? He felt a tremor go through his hands. If he found the tyrant again what would he do? Stand and fight? Run and hide? For the first time in his life, Gosai had no idea what his course of action would be. Fight or flight? Be the hero, or the coward?

Quickly though, he shook the question from his mind and began recounting the battle. The tyrant tearing into him. Breaking through the defenses he and all of his allies had valiantly attempted to put up against him... and he froze.

His allies. His friends! Where were they!?

"You didn't find anyone else at the site did you?" He demanded suddenly, almost falling out of the chair in his attempt to reach Dizi.

Excitement and concern receded quickly into fear as he watched the Namekian shake his head. "You were the only one I found." He answered apologetically.

Seven words. Seven words with an unmistakable impact. The human slumped into his chair again, staring blankly ahead. He had brought his grandfather. Brought Azumi, and even made allies with one of Chill's former henchmen. The Namekian warrior that had joined him in battle against the tyrant.

They'd trusted him with their lives and he hadn't been able to follow through. They had died because of his nature. They were dead... and he was alive.

"I guess I am indestructible," Gosai whispered to himself. "even when I don't want to be..."
