Silence. Everything was absolutely silent.

Oboe had been training under God for some two weeks now, though most of the training he found to be extremely boring. He said he was trying to teach him more than how to become stronger, to teach him to be calm and one with himself and his surroundings. The young Namekian barely grasped at the threads of the concepts he was being taught. He didn’t understand its greater meaning, and quite honestly, he didn’t care. All he knew that was so long as he trained under his newly found uncle he’d have a rather comfortable bed to sleep in at night. And that meant following every last one of his instructions.

As such, his training thus far had been rather tedious and boring. Earlier the other day, he was told to water the plants in Mr. Popo’s stead. He of course complained at first, but eventually found himself with a watering can in hand, tending to the shrubbery. Now he was doing something he found to be even more bothersome: meditating.

He’d always been told that it was excellent training, but he never understood why. After all, it didn’t involve any sort of physical activity. It seemed to him almost like taking a nap, but still being conscious while doing it. Amazingly, he’d managed to keep his mind as clear and calm as it is possible for someone with his youth for nearly five hours. But in the back of his mind, his patients were wearing thin. He was bored beyond what he could fathom, and it felt like he’d been doing this for days with no end in sight.

Suddenly, the silence was shattered by the familiar voice of Mr. Popo coming from perhaps a foot behind him. He had his head next to Oboe’s ear and said, “Kami-sama wishes to see you now.”

Oboe’s eyes shot open and he immediately sprang to life. “Well, it’s about time,” he announced.

Mr. Popo led Oboe to the arched doorway where God stood. He had one hand on the arch and had a small, transparent bottle in the other. Within it was a strange, dark colored liquid, almost like oil, but not nearly as thick. It sloshed around in the bottle as fluidly as normal water.

Oboe was just about to open his mouth and ask what it was, but God beat him to it. “I’m honestly amazed that you managed to stay calm and meditate for so long. You see, it was part of a test; to see if you’re ready for this,” he said, holding out the bottle. “Inside of this is a concoction I devised. It’s extremely bitter, and upon drinking it, you’ll be in extreme pain for around half a day or so. If you manage to make it through that, you’ll be able to use a powerful technique to Namekians like us.

“But I need to warn you before you decide to drink this, which I’m sure you will. You need to keep your mind as clear as possible after drinking it. Learning the technique from this elixir could make you as mindless and destructive as a Saiyan in their Ozaru form. However, if you concentrate and keep your mind and body together, even someone as unruly as you should be able to handle it.”

Oboe took a moment to take in what he was being told. He’d never heard his uncle speak so sternly before, and he knew him to be a very serious person.

“If this is so dangerous,” he started. “Why are you trusting me with it?”

“Because there’s no else to trust,” the old god replied. “Tell me, how many other Namekians have you seen on Earth? It’s just the two of us. Besides that, I feel I can have confidence in you. My blood runs through your veins you know. If that’s a good enough reason for me to let you stay in my palace, then it’s a good enough reason for me to let you drink this.”

God handed him the vial containing the concoction. He held it up to his eye, closely examining it. It looked almost sinister, a deep color like coffee. He was somewhat nervous, but tried to put any fears out of his mind. After all, if his uncle had faith in him, he had to have faith in himself.

“So, should I drink this now?” Oboe asked.

“Whether or not you want to is your decision. If you wish to do so now, I’m not stopping you. Or you could hold it off for a later day,” God replied.

Oboe had a look of determination on his face. “Nah, I was just wondering, that’s all. Don’t worry about me. I can take it!” He gripped the cork of the bottle with his claws and pulled it out. Then he pressed it up to his lips and let it flow into his mouth. The taste was bitter, incredibly so. It death itself had a taste this would probably be it. Still, he swallowed the bottle’s contents with a bit of gagging.

As soon as it went down, a wave of pain shot through him. His limbs began to feel numb, then almost as if they were on fire, and he collapsed to the ground, clutching his stomach. There he lay, occasionally wincing or twitching in pain, doing his best to withstand the harm done to him by the elixir. But in concentrating on the pain, he’d forgotten to do what his uncle had told him earlier, to keep his mind clear. He was too focused on the negative effects of the potion he’d drunk to think of anything else. His mind wandered little elsewhere, though occasionally, he thought of perhaps dying from the elixir, and once or twice about just what sort of powers it would unlock.

Time came and passed. The sun was now far below the horizon, and the moon now dominated the sky. A few stars twinkled above, giving the evening a calming feeling. However, it was easily upset by Oboe’s constant groaning. He’d been at it for 14 hours now, and hadn’t gotten a lick of rest or comfort since he’d drunk the elixir.

All of it was rather troubling to God, as he stood looking at him with his chin in his hand. He did his best to hide his concern, but it still showed ever so slightly. Mr. Popo seemed to be able to sense his distressed mood, but made no comment. Perhaps, he thought, it would be better to leave him to his own business.

As the night grew darker, God grew more worried. Oboe’s ki was faint now and he hardly ever made any twitching movements. It seemed to him that his nephew was on the very verge of death. Perhaps the elixir had been too much for him. He slowly walked over to Oboe’s nearly unconscious body, his still lying face flat on the floor, and knelt down beside him.

“I suppose this was too much for you to bear…” he said quietly. “If it were possible, I’d get you out of this pain now, and prevent you from receiving the potion’s effects. But I’m afraid it’s too late now…”

“I’m… fine,” Oboe struggled to say. “I’m… I’m gonna make it outta this. Just you wait…!”

God sighed and placed a hand on Oboe’s back. “Just don’t give up now, lad. It should only be a little while longer; hopefully before dawn.”

“Hey, what… is this gonna do to me anyway?” Oboe stammered. “I know it’s gonna… make me stronger, but… how?”

“Just have patents and wait. You’ll find out as soon as it takes effect. Now concentrate on clearing your mind for the time being.”

A few more hours passed and the first light of dawn cracked over the distant clouds. Bits of dew condensed on the sanctuary’s many plants and flowers, giving them a bright sheen. But still, Oboe lay on the ground in pain. He almost seemed to be asleep now. His grunts were unusually reminiscent of snores.

God was still bent down over him, keeping a close eye on his every movement. He certainly didn’t want to have to go through the effort of bringing him back to life again, especially considering he’d likely have to do so later anyway. The kid was far too reckless, endangering himself on every given occasion. Of course, he often had good reason to do so. But though he was strong, he certainly wasn’t the strongest out there. Perhaps that would eventually be his downfall.

Oboe’s arm shifted and his fist was clenched tightly now. Beads of sweat rolled down his brow. He appeared to be on more pain than he was a few moments ago. Perhaps, God thought, the elixir was finally taking effect. Veins were beginning to show very clearly in his forehead; the change in their size with each beat of his heart could even be seen. Oboe let out a deep, fierce growl, like one an animal might make when it’s cornered. God placed on hand on him in attempt to calm him down.

His entire body lit up with an aura; though it was merely an outline, it seemed somehow more intense than his usual fiery one. His eyes shot open and he clenched his teeth together. The muscles in his arms began to bulge, then his back, his legs, even his head, all in a sort of rhythm. Got pulled his hand back and looked carefully at him. Oboe seemed bigger now, quite a bit bigger, perhaps even over his own head. He knew his concoction had finally worked, but was still worried.

There wasn’t a rhythm this time, no separate changes on each part of the body, just another, solid bulge, affecting him in his entirety. He’d maybe doubled in size now, and even while lying down it was clear to see he was massive. Then everything just fell into place. Bits of tile floated up around him, then crumbled into dust while in air. Oboe grew steadily and rapidly, not pausing for a break like before. The ground under him cracked beneath his weight, producing a crater in the form of his body. It continued on until he was five, maybe six times his normal height. It was difficult to tell for anyone who was looking up at him. Even lying down he was slightly above God’s antennae now.

Then he calmed down, the aura faded away, his veins became less clearly defined. Oboe panted, tried to catch his breath. The pain from earlier was gone, and the stress of growing to this size was beginning to wear off. He clutched his chest and took heavy breaths in and out.

“So… how do you feel?” God asked calmly.

“Heh, heh…” Oboe chuckled. “Strong. I feel… strong. It’s … amazing. With strength like this, I doubt anyone in the world could take me down.”

“Perhaps… perhaps not,” God answered. “But I’m talking about your mind. As I said earlier, it needs to be free of negative thoughts. Otherwise, this form will be very difficult to control. You’ll be like a wild animal.”

“So?” Oboe snapped. “If I’m like a wild animal, I don’t care. It doesn’t matter as long as no one stands in my way.”

He seemed almost insane now, as if the mazoku within him were coming to the surface after all of these years. The trickle of evil inside him seemed stronger than ever.

To the utter surprise of both God and Mr. Popo, he walked over to, and walked off the side of the sanctuary, taking three bounding steps before doing so.

“Mr. Popo thinks this bad,” the dark skinned assistant said.

“God knows this is bad.”

Oboe was blinded with rage now, thoughts of the pain he’d been through before. It certainly wasn’t much in comparison to the lives of some others, but it was more than enough to bring him to insanity once it all came to the surface.

The trees in the Karin Holy land were just below his eyes. He pushed them apart, tore them down, in search of something to take his madness out on.

Then he saw it. A monkey.

It was sitting on the branch of a pine tree, looking up at him with large, fearful, yet innocent eyes. Oboe’s mind immediately raced off to elsewhere, thinking of nothing but Saiyans when he saw the critter. That’s what he always associated them with, monkeys, animals, beasts. They too, he thought, deserved to die. Five minutes ago, such thoughts wouldn’t have come up. He was normally calm around nature, even the Saiyan-like monkeys he’d come to enjoy over time.

But right now, he was almost like a different person, an insane one with a lust for blood. He plucked it out of the tree and crushed it in one of his enormous hands. He could hear its bones snap, and then opened his palm and let its dead limp body fall to the ground. And for some reason, it pleased him. He trudged off in search of another helpless creature. Though this time, he had the sickening thought of wanting to hear screams of that helplessness. This time, he wanted human blood.

There was smoke on the horizon, a thin, gray smoke rising up from an opening in the trees. He pushed down the pines around him to find a small village, one with the natives of the area. They had small huts up, and children were running around playing while adults were busily working on their day-to-day tasks. All of that harmony was shattered as they looked up to see Oboe’s hulking form.

He sneered with joy and opened his mouth, a blast of ki forming in the back of his throat. Just as he was about to fire it, he could feel a sharp slap on the back of his head.

Oboe growled and scratched the back of his head as he turned around. To his utter shock, it just happened to be God behind him, only much bigger than Oboe usually saw him. God was perhaps a head above him, maybe a little more and had a stern look on his wrinkled face.

“Please, excuse my grand nephew,” he said in a somewhat lighthearted and embarrassed voice to the people below. “He’s just insane now. Of course, none of you probably believe me.”

The people below stared blankly up at him, not really knowing what to think. Most of them had their jaws open, and one was wincing slightly.

Oboe, too, was unsure what was going on. The fact God could use the same technique came to a shock to him, but he was beginning to put two and two together. If he was the one who concocted that elixir in the first place, surely he must have known about its effects, and probably used it on himself at some point in time.

“You just have to ruin my fun, don’t you?” Oboe barked.

“This certainly wouldn’t be fun if your mind was clear like I told you it should have been,” the old Namekian replied. “I’m afraid I may have to knock you unconscious before taking you back. Unless of course you stop this and come back willingly.”

Oboe sucked his teeth in disgust. “You think you can knock me out n-“

God acted quickly, delivering a sharp punch to the face in the middle of what Oboe was saying. He followed up with another, quicker punch, enough to knock him backwards slightly. Oboe stumbled, and nearly fell on the village before catching his balance and standing up straight.

“Oh, so it’s a fight you want, hunh?” Oboe said aggressively. “Well, let’s make it a fight then!”

The two blows God had gotten in previously weren’t too effective, though they’d left their mark. That mark was made perhaps not as much physically as it was mentally. It made Oboe more enraged than before. He looked at him with a vicious look in his eye, as if he had intent to kill. And he probably did.

Oboe slammed up against the old man and grabbed his hands, their fingers now locked. They seemed even, though it became glaringly obvious that God had lost little strength with age. He was pushing back much harder; his teeth were clenched and had a serious look in his eye. Sparks ran across his antennae like miniature bolts of lightning, and then they lit up with a bright flash of ki. Two beams of energy flew out of their tips, almost seeming to electrocute Oboe, leaving him momentarily stunned. It was just enough of an opening for God to give him a good, hard punch to the gut. As soon as the effects from being shocked wore off, Oboe leaned over and clutched his stomach, gagging a bit. His uncle, however, was relentless with his assault. He kneed the young Namekian in the face, and a trickled of purple blood ran down his nose.

Yet, Oboe still kept a smile on his face. For some reason, this made him happy, incredibly so. It had been ages since he’d last had any sort of challenge, and he certainly wasn’t going to give up the opportunity now. Oboe bounded to his left, and then vanished into thin air. How anything that large could move so quickly was beyond the concern of those watching, and participating for that matter. Oboe reappeared behind God and brought his hands down on the top of his head. He’d finally managed to get one attack in, but it was nowhere near enough.

God still looked perfectly calm and was hardly hurt by Oboe’s attack. “You can’t use your full strength in battle if you’re blinded by rage. Surely I thought you’d learned that from those Saiyans?” he commented.

“Shut up!” Oboe cried. He charged as much ki as possible into his fist, sparks of it emanating from his knuckles as he punched. And God, by some miraculous feat of strength, caught it in his hand. Wispy ki surrounded his other fist, clenched and pulled near his chest. As it opened, the ki took the form of a dragon and surged out of his palm, striking him like a flame, not an ordinary blast. Taking the full brunt of it, Oboe was pushed back to the ground, the flames licking him, burning every inch of his flesh they touched. Consciousness quickly faded from his eyes and he fell to the ground, smashing several trees on his way. Unable to handle being transformed any longer, he shrunk down to his typical size and his breathing slowed to virtually nothing.

God looked back at the village, then at his nephew. Luckily, the village was unharmed, save for a few pots that had been stepped on and crushed. He knew the situation could have been much worse. At least the only casualty this time had been a monkey. Any more than that could have been a catastrophe, a repeat of the events his grandfather had caused so long ago. The last thing he wanted was for this boy to follow in his footsteps. He breathed a sigh of relief and reverted back to his normal height as well.

God walked calmly over Oboe. His forehead was in his hand as he quietly said, “Ugh.” He placed one hand on the unconscious Namekian and his image blurred, taking the two of them away and back to God’s Palace.
