Chapter 2 Cruel Beginnings Blizzard stood on Roshi's Island, looking out over the rolling waves. He watched intently as if waiting for something to happen. Suddenly, he whipped his hand out and fired a finger beam through the water. As the water darkened with blood, Blizzard jumped the forty feet from the shore to where he had shot the fish. He caught himself in midair, hanging above the water, and then plunged his three-toed foot into the sea. with lightning speed, he ripped the twenty five pound mackerel out of the water and began to hover back to shore. As he ate, he thought about all the things he had learned over the past week. Roshi was a clever warrior, Blizzard realized it now. He realized that Roshi's foolish behavior and crooked posture were simply a veil hiding his true power. Today Roshi had shown Blizzard that he too could transform. This new discovery about the old man had struck Blizzard, bringing him almost to a place of respect for his teacher. Blizzard had never thought that a simple human could transform it's ki the way the mighty Changelings did. After finishing off the fish raw, Blizzard took to the air. He worked on the powerful speed boosting techniques Roshi had showed him. The ability enabled Blizzard to get even more propulsion out of his ki, making him even harder to hit and evade. With a blast of purple ki, Blizzard shot skyward. He then pushed his power even harder, causing a blast of green energy to radiate from the edges of his purple aura. Soon, the living missile was nearing the atmosphere, beginning to burn through. Blizzard laughed, seeing these weakling humans made him feel truly reborn. He was a god, at least to these creatures, able to survive in the vacuum of space. A thunderous tearing sound emanated from the jetstream of light as Blizzard shredded his way through the upper atmosphere. Soon he broke into the ionosphere of the Earth, feeling the irradiating warmth of the Sun's particulates passing over his body in waves. Here he folded his legs, rested his wrist's in his knees, and began to meditate. He flowed through his own ki, feeling out with his mind and energy through the terrible blackness of space. Colors, sounds... vague shapes formed from broken tangles of memory, he flew through it all and free'd himself from himself. On an endless figure eight of black canvas, Blizzard dissolved his consciousness and drew himself close to the universal power. He came to the threshold of energy, the place where all space and time emanate from, the heart of the universe. And it was black. Blizzard came back to himself, he realized his body and left that terrible abyss behind. As he adjusted to the return to consciousness, he looked out at the endless vacuum. "All these fools fight for good and justice, believing that the light is the way, when it is clear that the universe is a vast darkness. The light is merely imperfections in the serene blanket of void." wc(509) |

The changeling hung there in space, allowing the Earth's orbit to pull at him. He began to stretch his limbs, his muscles creaking like trees in the wind. He saw a satellite floating by, some kind of telescope. Like a gentle breeze beginning to stir, flame-like streaks of ki began to surf their way's across Blizzard's body. This intensified until he was swirling with power. In a giant, silent blast of light, he rocketed towards the satellite, stopping about three hundred meters from it and unleashed both a mighty yell and a torrent of explosive ki blasts. A few of these blasts went streaming past the satellite, but the rest all struck home. The explosion was bright enough to be seen from earth. "By the light of the black sun, our line will rule once more!" The words raced through his mind. He hadn't thought of that moment for so long... It was night on Frieza. The stars were reflecting off of Glacier Lake, creating the illusion that the sky and it were one, and that space itself was coming arching down to meet you at this gulf between beach and nothingness. Four six-legged reptilian creatures with great mantis like claws sped across the sand. They were Yrkaks, vicious predators who inhabited Frieza's wastes. A small changeling, barely older than a toddler, stood huddled by a rock. The Yrkaks were moving in a circle around the small boy, keeping him tight against the stone. As the circle drew tighter and tighter, the child cried out. It jumped towards the closest of the creatures and began to claw it's way across the monster's back. The child snapped it's long canine teeth deep into the Yrkak's neck, puncturing a major artery and sending spurts of neon blue ichor spraying across the sandy ground. The other three hunters watched as their companion stumbled drunkenly left, then right, before falling over with a mouthful of its life-blood. The child was not hesitating. It leapt into the air, soaring towards another of the beasts. The great lizard opened it's jaw wide, ready to swallow the child whole. But, just as it seemed the little changeling was doomed, he burst with ki, projecting him up and over the beasts maw. As the child went he ripped at the things eye's with his claws. One of the beast's four eyeball's was ripped apart, another sealed shut by a massive cut across the lid. The boy ran on all fours across the creature's back, using his claws to dig in. He ran to the creature's rear and jumped again, flying towards the next closest monster. After a hearty meal of cooked lizard, the little changeling boy assembled his shelter for the night. Out of the skin and bones of an yrkak, and using ligament for stitching, he created a simple lean-to against the rock that had given him cover earlier that night. As this young Blizzard lay on his back, propping his head up with his arms and looking out over the lake, He thought only of revenge for his dead father. wc(514) |

As the dim, blue light of Frieza's distant sun began to creep over the horizon, the young Blizzard awoke. A large figure stood over him, Causing the small changeling to leap to his feet in shock. Relief rushed over him as he recognized the interloper as his master, a changeling warrior named Ice. The old Changeling looked over the young prince's handywork. "Very impressive, your progress continues to amaze me my lord." As he spoke, Master Ice beckoned to a transport vessel resting just a few hundred yards away. "We have been looking for you for a few days, the time has come to get you and your mother off of this rock." Master Ice was a member of The Black Sun, a rebel group which opposed the tyrannical rule of the new King. It was Ice who had saved Blizzard and his mother Aurora from King Cold's mighty assassins. But, due to Blizzard's lineage, King Cold would not stop until he was destroyed. King Cold feared that the power of the ancient changeling line would be reawakened in the young prince, and so would stop at nothing to destroy Blizzard. The Black Sun held loyalty to the old line, deeming the usurping new King an upstart with no foresight. It was to the eternally dark planet of Umbra, a planet so obscure and untravelled even the Changeling Empire had no knowledge of it, that The Black Sun brought Blizzard and his mother to hide. Over many years, Blizzard grew to adulthood. The dangerous black landscape of Umbra forging him into a powerful warrior and a merciless killer. Master Ice worked hard to prepare him, but also tried to give the growing prince the freedom and dreams that he had never had. It wasn't until his twentieth birthday that Blizzard got his first experience of true pain. It was dark, as always. The Umbrowana tread across the blasted landscape, the entire herd keeping a slow plodding pace. Each animal was a twelve foot long giant, covered in long shaggy fur and completely devoid of eyes. Wide, lipless mouths were used to overturn soil, as the creatures grazed on roots, but despite their docile appearance they could be incredibly fierce. Umbrowana were known for one thing, they never backed down. Once engaged in a fight, the great beasts would battle too the death. This was exactly why Blizzard stalked them, Master Ice had decreed that he would not be accepted back into the sanctuary until he returned with the horns of the Umbrowana. wc(422) |

Blizzard crept on hands and knees, moving slowly. He had been stalking the wary Umbrowana for days, and spooking them now would mean he was going to starve to death in the wastes. But he had another problem. If he did manage to get in range, the thirty or so beasts were likely to all attack at once. A great horned head shook, spraying dust and dead skin into the air. The bull Umbrowana had led his tribe for over twenty years, and he had not gotten so far without learning a few things. He was already aware of the small creature creeping up on his herd. Raising his massive head skyward, the great beast let out a trumpeting scream. Every single Umbrowana in the group immediately began to run, except for him. This was a precautionary method, the big bull did not want to trample his young in the fight to come. Blizzard jumped to his feet, "So, you big bastard, you're smarter than you look!" The young changeling jumped into the air, clearing the distance between him and the bull and bracing himself for a kick. With a quick front flip he delivered a devastating heel kick to the beast. The Umbrowana stumbled, but his hard skull was unscathed. Thrusting his head forward, the beast knocked Blizzard back, sending him spinning to the ground. The Changeling met the earth with a crash, sending a plume of dust high into the air. "You will regret that, your horns are mine!" He leapt to the attack again, this time firing off a finger beam at the eyeless beast's forehead. The bright flash of light was overwhelming to Blizzard, he hadn't even seen a fluorescent bulb in days, and his eyes had adjusted to the near pitch blackness. Sunspots swarmed across his vision as he tried to shake the daze from his mind. The Umbrowana was not dazed by the light, but rather the fracture running down it's near bulletproof skull from the impact of the blast. This only slowed the creature's rampage for a moment however, and before Blizzard could react the massive horned head was slamming into him. He couldn't help but be bowled over by the onslaught, rolling left and right to avoid the stomping hooves of the monster. Using his hands, Blizzard flipped off the ground as the beast passed over him. He landed on his feet, back facing the monster. Suddenly a giant dark shape slammed into his chest, knocking him over again. It was the bull's thick tail, something he had overlooked as a weapon. Now, thanks to the young Changeling's lack of foresight, he was once again at the mercy of the great monster. WC(450) |

The Umbrowana bull sensed victory was close, this creature was barely keeping pace. The monster attempted to trample Blizzard yet again, getting on top of the young changeling and stomping violently. Unfortunately for the bull, Blizzard was waiting for it. As the monster ran up to him, he flipped off his tail. This vaulted him up and over the monster, landing him on it's back. The creature bucked, bellowing for help from his herd. Blizzard heard the stampede coming, knowing he didn't have much time. Pinching his heels together on the monster's neck, Blizzard pointed both index fingers downwards. With a scream of rage, he began to pump his arms up and down, firing a blast from his fingertips as each arm reached the apex of it's descent. Blizzard could smell the blood, even if he couldn't see it. Lord Ice sat in his observatory in the Black Sun sanctuary, he was brooding. "Where the hell is that child, he should have been back days ago! We can't have the prospective heir, and unknowing figure-head of the Black Sun, getting himself killed! Listen Udo, go find that brat and bring him back here before I use your head as a stress ball!" The giant Changeling's tone meant that he was completely serious, a worse fate had befallen his last assistant. Udo shot to attention, saluting. "Yes, milord. I will bring the boy back right aw..." Udo was cut short, a thunderous rumbling was nearly shaking the foundations of the facility. Blizzard had been running for so long, he didn't know if he even wanted to keep going. The beasts just wouldn't give up, some had even died from starvation chasing him. Even worse, the two giant horns which he bore under each arm were starting to get exponentially heavier with each step. The beasts were closing the gap and he was still at least a half mile away from the outer walls of the sanctuary. He could see the blinking red beacon-light ahead. "What is that!" Lord Ice yelled, the rumbling was growing stronger. Udo was scrambling frantically about, his squat form jiggling with the thought of what would happen if he didn't come up with an answer soon. "Milord, I will head up to the overlook and see just what is going on! I shan't fail you sire!" He sidled out of the sliding blast door, head held low. As soon as Udo was out of his master's sight, he began to run full tilt. Merrick's eye was glued to the thermal telescope, he and Vrinn had been placing bets. Would the Changeling runt make it? Or, as was (in Vrinn's opinion) more likely, would the rampaging beasts catch up and trample him to paste? "Run you little bastard! Uncle Merrick's got five-hundred zeni riding on yah! Ow, hey what was that for!" A lump was rising from the blue alien's forehead. Vrinn looked at him with contempt, "how dare you! You want me to loose out on a thousand zeni? I thought we was friends!" Vrinn was a little off, especially since that steam valve hit him in the head. "Oh, right right." Merrick turned his attention back to the boy, humoring his friend. "I meant to tell him to let them trample him." WC(549) |

Udo clambered up the ladder as fast as he could, lifting his fat little body through the porthole and into the overlook's central chamber. "Lord Ice demands too know what is causing the earthquake!" Udo was screaming now, expending pent up rage from years of humility and servitude. Blizzard's run was just about through, the Umbrowana herd was so close on his tail (literally) that their snorting breaths were rushing past his ears. He was close, but at this rate he would never make it too the entrance into the sanctuary before he was trampled underfoot. Now he had to decide, turn and fight, die with honor; or keep running, perhaps to be turned into roadkill. "There is no way I will run any longer, these stinking beasts are not even sentient! I, the great Prince Blizzard, cannot die fleeing for my life!" Merrick cried out in pain once more, "Geez! Don't scare me like that, I just about took my eye out on this thing!" He sat up from the thermal telescope, rubbing his freshly bruised and swelling eye. Vrinn looked at Udo in shock, he had never heard the little grease spot sound so determined and angry before. "Well, sir, the prince is on his way back, is all..." Vrinn scuffed his boot on the ground, looking down shamefully. "And he is bringing a whole herd of Umbrowana with him." Merrick was chiming in now, still eying the thermal telescope. Blizzard did an about-face, simultaneously throwing the two massive horns to the ground. The creatures were right on top of him, but he leapt from beneath the giant hooves just moments before they pounded the young warrior into pulp. "My god! The master will kill me for sure! Activate the flood lights you imbeciles, Man the autoturrets!" Udo was in a frantic rage, running about as if he couldn't decide what to do first. Vrinn looked at him curiously, "But sir! Lord Ice commanded us to not even aid the boy until he brought back those horns!" Udo was growing impatient, these fools didn't realize that any mishap could mean their lives. "Listen, both of you! Lord Ice will kill the pair of you, in horrible ways that you could never even dream of, if that runt doesn't make it back here alive! Now, hop too it!" Of course, Udo would surely face the same fate, but there was no need to tell them that now. There were at least thirty of the beasts left, Blizzard had only managed to fell one of the creatures so far. Everything was looking hopeless, and fighting in the dark was making it even more so. Energy waves pierced the veil of darkness with strands of burning light, the cries of the dying Umbrowana co-mingling with the sound of distant explosions. As all looked to be lost, the sanctuary floodlights kicked on. It was blinding, being able to see at all had been a rare luxury for Blizzard over the last few days, now there was too much of it. Lord Ice meditated in his chamber, he could sense everything going on outside. His plan was working perfectly. He had known the creatures would never give up the attack, which gave him a perfect opportunity to save the young prince. With Blizzard's trust secured, Ice would be the power behind the throne! Except for one little problem, His mother... WC (569) Total WC (3,013) |
