The "Future" “Don’t work too hard, Gohan,” Bulma pleaded with the wounded warrior. “Trunks, help Gohan into the rejuvenating capsule.” It’s been twenty-some years since Son Goku died of an undetected heart disease. Since that time, all of the warriors of Earth and Vegeta have died at the vengeful hands of Dr. Gero, from beyond the grave. Gero’s genius created two tremendously strong androids named, simply, 17 & 18 that survived him to punish Goku for stopping the Red Ribbon Army. Lacking their primary target, the androids did as they pleased with a strength none could match. Now, the only friends of Goku’s to survive are his son Gohan, his friend Bulma, and the child she had with Vegeta, Trunks. Gohan’s daily struggle is to meet the artificial humans when they appear, and attempt to limit the carnage they commit until he is one day strong enough to stop them completely. “Yes, mom,” the younger boy said, taking Gohan’s arm in a nearly ironic gesture to those who know, and leading him far into Capsule corps’ depths. It had been another rough battle with the androids. Gohan had barely made it to the remains of Capsule corp, now hiding far below the ruins of its original HQ. Gohan ground his teeth as he remembered the Androids’ casual airs as they swatted away his every attempt to punish them. How could they be so powerful! Gohan wondered. Even Frieza was defeated by Super Saiyan power! Twice! It was no fluke. How can these androids be so strong that my Super Saiyan does nothing? “Here, Gohan. Just lie back in the capsule,” Trunks said, opening the front hatch to a pod, not unlike an outdoor toilet. “This is new, Trunks. Did Bulma get the idea for a healing chamber while we were on Namek?” Gohan asked, trying not to let his bad attitude get away with him. “She was with us when we fought Frieza, you know.” “Yeah, I do. Just lie back,” Trunks said. Then he shut the door, and the machine hummed to life. Gohan’s thoughts numbed as the machine filled with liquid and took over his body’s functions. Soon, he was unconscious. “Trunks! What did you just do?” Bulma screamed from the door way. “I told you to put him in the new rejuvenating capsule! That’s the experimental cloning capsule!” Trunks looked at the machine in shock as he read the machine’s controls closer. “Don’t worry about it now,” Bulma said quickly. “No harm should be done. Just switch him to the healing chamber as fast as you can when this process is over. And let’s keep this between you and me. Ok?” Trunks just nodded his head. WC: 443 |

The “Future,” still. Gohan woke slowly. His eyes hurt to open and his mouth tasted thick and bitter. He lifted a heavy arm and rubbed his face. It was wet. He realized that all of him was wet. Numbly, he realized he was in a small room or a box. With effort, he rose from his seat and pushed the door before him open. A light pierced his eyes. Gasping, he covered them with his hands, peeking through his fingers at the world before him. The light was only a lamp, hanging by its wire out of the ceiling, but it shot through his brain like it was the first thing he had ever seen. Desperately, Gohan stumbled through the room, leaning on anything he could to stand. “How long have I been in there?” he attempted to ask, but his tongue stumbled in his mouth. Slowly, the scene around him came to life. He realized with the ash on his fingers that this place had been burnt. Crumbling building material around him told him that the structure had been destroyed. Somehow, this room and the box he was sleeping in had survived, but it wasn’t undamaged. Gohan quickly thought of Trunks and Bulma. Are they safe? In his passion, Gohan took a few steps toward the only door way he saw, but his legs collapsed out from under him. His head seared. He was in no position to help anyone, and he knew it. Dizziness began to set in. He pulled himself up and looked for a place to lie down. He saw a chair. It was lifted up, in some sort of a capsule, but Gohan had to get to it. Fumbling, he made it to the capsule and climbed in. Finally, resting, his mind relaxed. He vaguely saw a control panel with dates and times in front of him. As always, he set the date to the year his father died in. It was an old habit Gohan cherished, since it reminded him of happier times. ”Ha,”Gohan thought bitterly as he drifted to sleep, not even noticing the capsule he was closing over him, or its lights coming on. “Happier. Was life actually happier when we were always fighting for our lives even then?” ”Yes. Because at least we were together,” were his last thoughts before he fell asleep smiling, and the capsule’s bright flash took him out of the room, and out of his reality. WC: 407/850 |

Not the Future…. Gohan awoke to the cry of seagulls. The sun shone violently in his eyes, and his breath felt hot and heavy. Panic seized him as he discovered where he was. It was the beach, but not one that existed anymore. No more wreckage and burnt sand. No more uprooted palm trees and unburied bodies. It was a beach that he had often seen when he was child going to Muten Roshi’s house with his dad. But it had been destroyed by the androids years ago, he thought to himself. Now he looked closer, he saw that even the cars parked nearby were old models. No one was around, but that wasn’t odd for this small beach. Everyone who lived here mostly kept to themselves. Finally, Gohan realized that he was still in that strange chair and pod he stumbled on. Climbing out, he, first, found that he was not half as weak as he was before he collapsed asleep, and second, that this was indeed one of Bulma’s with the words, “Capsule Corp” tagged right on it. Putting two and two together, he stared at the time machine in disbelief. Afraid of possibilities he didn’t want to think of, Gohan quickly hit the button to pop the machine into a capsule, but instead of a quick puff of smoke the whole thing collapsed in a pillar of black vapor. Despair gripped Gohan, and a primal scream escape his throat as he saw his one link back to his reality explode. Bulma must not have finished all the features on this invention before Gohan used it. Remembering how the room looked when he entered the time machine, Gohan wondered if Bulma was even still alive. Fighting his emotions, Gohan leapt to take to the skies, but had trouble balancing his ki. He barely landed on his feet. Looking around, he saw that the explosion and his yell had attracted the attention of some of the residents. He quickly took to his feet and ran away. I feel so weak! Whats going on? He had found a quiet place, but it had taken him longer to run there than he thought it would. He attempted to power up, but, again, his ki felt small and unmanageable. He couldn’t figure out what happened. If this was really the year he had set the time machine to, then he still should be a child. Going home would probably be a bad idea. The closest friend he had was Muten Roshi. He ran back to the beach, and took a small boat. Living with the androids in the future had taught him that resourcefulness sometimes took precedence over other morals. He began to paddle. WC: 449/1299 |

Gohan was half dead when Muten Roshi pulled him back to shore. He was lucky that he had somehow made it as close to Roshi’s island as he had. He was luckier that Roshi and his turtle had been available to help. “I suppose you’ve come here to learn from me, eh? Well, you’re not doing a great job of impressing me by not being able to even make it to my island,” the Turtle Hermit said. “Master Roshi, don’t I look familiar at all?” Gohan said. “Ha, and what about you is so special?” Roshi said. Gohan pulled at his clothes, to emphasize their similarity to his father’s, and put on his goofiest grin. The old man recognized the similarity in an instant. “But, you can’t be Son Goku!” he shouted. Gohan explained his situation briefly, leaving out the bleakness of the future. “So, what is your plan now?” the old man asked. “I need to talk to talk to Capsule Corp and see if they have built their time machine yet. I was going to your house to use your phone, but for some reason my body isn’t working. It’s like I’m a child again! I can’t possibly go back to the future like this. Of course, that’s if Capsule Corp even has a way for me to go back.” “No fear, Son Gohan. You are speaking to the foremost master of ki and martial arts on the planet. I will have you back in fighting form in no time. Your training starts now.” “Thank you, Master Roshi! You won’t regret this,” Gohan said, bowing. They reached the island easily. Roshi called Capsule Corp, but of course, they had no time machine. Having planted the idea, all Gohan could do was wait and try to get back to his old power. “Who knows? Maybe you will surpass yourself, and this will be a blessing,” Roshi was sure to mention. WC: 319/1618 |
