Osiris walked through the market considering the equipment required for the next phase of his plan. The collective price wasn’t staggering but still rather considerable. As he stood eyeing strange crystals a young, burly Keliouxian clasped a hand down on Osiris’ shoulder. It wasn’t there for more than a second before Osiris was crushing it in his grip, forcing the man to his knees in pain.

“Wait, wait! I’m just here to talk!”

“Well, speak,” Osiris said coolly while he slightly relaxed his grip.

“My boss, Henex, wants me to bring you back to his factory. He has a job to offer you.”

Osiris narrowed his eye, “What kind of a job?”

“I don’t know exactly. All I know is he needs someone to go up north with one of our surveyors.”

“Fine.” Osiris released his hand, “Take me there.” With that said they walked through the stone streets silently. Continually the Keliouxian glanced nervously towards his new companion. For a long time he kept playing with his respiration mask anxiously. Eventually it was too much.

“Ha-how do you breathe without a mask?” Osiris just shrugged. “Well didn’t your parents tell you who your peoples were?” Their eyes locked for a moment and an unspoken understanding passed between them. Henex’s man looked down at his scuffed boots, “Oh, sorry. I was just curious. We hear a lot of rumors about you around the city. I guess you don’t come here all that often though. The Factory isn’t far now.”

Arriving at the large factory Osiris was lead through a maze of hallways before coming to a office suit. Sitting behind a dark wood desk was a thin man in expensive clothes. With a wave of his hand Henex dismissed the young employee back to the shipping dock. “You my young friend are a hard man to find.”

“I’d be dead if I was,” his voice was flat and emotionless. Taking in the luxury of what was supposed to be a working room knotted his stomach with disgust. His people were lucky to have a cave with a small atmosphere generator so they can take off their masks while they slept. “What have you called me for?”

“Well a job of course, I’m sure my runner told you that much.” When Osiris nodded Henex went on with his enthusiastic, if not slightly uneven smile. “I need you to take one of my surveyors to the north. We suspect there may be some titanium veins that have gone untapped. But, as usually there are some catches. We need this to be quiet. There are some new players in the game who are trying their best to cut in on my profits. They’ve even gone as far as planting moles in my own factory. That’s why you were the clear choice. You know the land, you move in and out of the city unnoticed, but most of all you don’t do bossiness with those who associate with slavers. In short, I can trust you. Ahh, I’m being terribly rude, please sit down. Tell me what you think.”

Osiris sat in a well cushioned chair Henex gestured to. “I feel like I’m going to break this chair, I prefer stone. Anyway, it is true that when I make a deal I stay to it. How do I know you will do the same though?”

“I expected nothing less from you, and I could only come up with one solution. This certainly isn’t my favorite idea but never the less, Kendel.” A young tall woman with blue hair braided down the whole of her back stepped into the room wear a shimmering green dress with a white lab coat. “This is my daughter and also our best geological specialist. Kendel this is Osiris.”

Kendel strode across the room to shake his hand. “I have to say, I thought you would at least be taller.” Osiris didn’t smile while he grasped her hand; he hadn’t come to play games. She sat next to him, staring intently with amber eyes. “Why do you still try to hide your face? We mean you no harm, clearly.” Her voice was quizzical and aristocratic.

“I have yet to see proof of that. You call me here because you can trust me. How am I supposed to trust you though? People can be made to say things, and documents can be forged. You have no proof this is your daughter and I am not put at ease.” His jaw tightened, he would not be played the fool.

Before Henex could even open his mouth Kendel replied, her eyes still fixed on him. “That’s a touch paranoid don’t you think?”

Henex snapped, “Do not insult our guest! He has a right to be leery. I am truly sorry Osiris. What can I,” Osiris cut him off with the wave of a hand. The real anger in Henex’s voice and the mixture of shock and shame plastered on Kendels face was evidence enough.

“I am convinced. I don’t plan to stay here any longer; Kendel can fill me in on the other details while we travel. Meet me in the western trade district when you are ready.” With that he strode from the room with his cloak swaying behind him. A sense of relief washed over him as he blended back into the anonymity that comes with large crowds.

Moving with his usual silent steps he quickly made his way back to the store Henex’s runner had taken him away from. He had heard much about the gems that could allow him to speak with other regardless the distance, but he was skeptical. He was even more skeptical that fighters used these to spar at great distances. What he was not skeptical of was that he needed to find someone who could help his training along. Osiris contemplated the idea for a moment. “This may be the only way, doesn’t look like I will be getting off this rock anytime soon.”

About an hour later Osiris spotted Kenel approaching the group of store he had been bartering with. Quickly he walked away from her down a back alley way. As she followed trying to keep up with him, they went further and further back into passage ways until there were no more streets or people to be seen. Kendel cursed under her breath after losing sight of her would be guide, instead of taking her up north he got her lost before even leaving the city.

Heavy footsteps sounded behind her, “Osiris?” The figure pulled a knife from his belt and started running towards her.

“Oh shit!” She sprinted in the opposite direction turning down corners haphazardly. Left, left, right, straight, another right. Dead end. Kendel stopped at the wall, having nowhere else to go she pulled the small spade from her pack to defend herself. It wasn’t long before the figure reappeared at the opening of the alleyway. Before the figure even had a chance to advance on her a black streak dived down crushing him under the weight of the impact. Kendel immediately recognized the cloak, “What was that!?”

Osiris quickly walked over her and grabbed Kendel’s hand. “We need to go before we catch another tail.” Instead of going back out onto the streets they came to an opening between two houses and the edge of town perched upon the edge of a gravelly slope. He kneeled down with his back turned to Kendel. “Get on; you won’t make it down this fast enough for us to go unseen.”

She hesitated only for a moment before wrapping her arms around his shoulders and letting him left her from the ground. “Is that man back there dead?”

“I don’t know, and frankly I don’t care,” as the last word left his mouth he launched them down the hill. His feet hit the gravel and immediately put them in a slid. Within moments they were back on level ground and rather than loosing speed they gained more, much more. Osiris powered into the distant putting the city behind them faster than most vehicles could. Every time they came to a wide lava flow Osiris felt Kendel’s grip tighten when he jumped. But each time as they landed and continued to speed forward he could hear her giggle slightly. After an hour of running like this they finally came to the Iron Mountain Caves that were home to the Saoirsen. “We are here. You can take your mask off while we are in the caves.”

As they stepped into the entrance a guard looked up from his evening meal. “I didn’t realize you would be coming back with company,” he eyed the tall woman suspiciously. “She’s with you though so I guess I can’t say much,” he sighed and waved them in.

“What was that all about?” Kendel asked worriedly.

“If you were with just about anyone else but me you would be bound and gagged by now. If you came alone you would be dead. The evening meal should already be served. We can drop our gear off in my quarters and go eat before we turn in. Tomorrow will be an early start. Don’t be offended if some of the older members ignore you. I would be more worried about some of the teenagers though. Most of them are curious about city life.”

“Aren’t you a teenager?” Her eyebrow rose with curiosity as they approached the main chamber. Osiris just nodded under his hood. “So why do you talk about them like you aren’t one of them?”

“Because I lost my childhood before I realized what it was.” As they entered the main chamber the group eating there fell silent for a long minute. Then as though realizing what they were supposed to be doing a group of people flew into a flurry of activity. They seated the two and had their food set in front of them before they could even take the time to adjust to a comfortable position. Kendel was clearly not accustomed to sitting on the floor, but she was bombarded by questions before getting a chance to even taste her food. As time went on the older members got up and went to do their nightly chores and sleep. When the torches began to burn dim and Osiris could see Kendel getting tired he put an end to the questioning and returned everyone to their quarters.

“Thank you, I was starting to run out of answers there.” Before he could even reply she was fast asleep on her cot. Osiris slumped back into his carved out stone slab that along with several layers of blankets served as his bed. Staring up at the ceiling he hoped that the trip would go off without a hitch. The only problem with that hope was that he lived on a floating chunk of hell. Nothing ever went perfectly here. Some days it even seemed like nothing ever went well at all. Pushing the myriad of voices from his mind he forced his body to sleep.

A light shaking startled Osiris from his rest. He flipped out of his bed pinning the stranger to the ground. “Sorry. I’m not use to people touching me.” He stood helping the stranger, Kendel, to her feet. She was staring at him again.

“It’s okay, I should have known better. I just didn’t want to be loud. Hey, are you ever going to take that cloak off?” Her voice was joking and light.

“When I have to. I see you are already packed. Guess we should be going then, we can eat breakfast on the go.” He was relived she wasn’t freaked out. He wasn’t good at showing emotions though, mainly due to a lack of practice, and a fear of losing control. The rest of morning was a blur of running. By noon they stopped to eat lunch and let Kendel stretch her muscles. Over their small meals they discussed the rest of the days traveling and the ways to circumvent the lava flows too large to jump. Other than that Osiris avoided conversation. He feelt awkward after tackling her. The way Kendel kept looking at him didn’t help. Her amber eyes weren’t malevolent, but it was as though she was trying to look into his mind, or maybe even his soul.

A short time before reaching their destination in the mid afternoon they passed a small cluster of ruins. Kendel spoke with an air of confidence. “The recent earthquakes must have uncovered some of the Lost Ones constructions. We should stop there on the way back to have a quick look around.” Osiris nodded his head in agreement. The Lost Ones had always interested him, an opportunity to learn something was not to be wasted when it concerned such beings.

Upon reaching the correct set of ridges Kendel immediately put Osirsi to work setting up her gear. Both of them had agreed that getting the work done that night, even if it had to be done in the light that is given off by glowing rock would be wise. That way they could simply leave at first light the next day, thus keeping the trek to three days. Together they moved up and down the ridge digging holes and marking GPS locations. Henex’s suspicions were correct; the whole mountain side was filled with titanium.

While the two companions were finishing packing their samples Osirsi turned as he heard small rocks falling. A great black hound with a mane of fire was driving towards down the side of the ridge. Before he could dodge the beast jumped catching his left arm in its maw. With a scream of anger Osiris kicked the hound as hard as he could sending it flying into a bolder.

There was no time to recover as two more charged at Kendel from their left. Osiris met their charge head on with a glowing fist pounding one into the ground and breaking its spine. The other was quicker though, slashing at his stomach. With a roar Osiris brought his elbow and knee together, crushing the animal’s throat. He stepped back putting Kendel right behind him. His eyes darted from one place to another. “Get your samples quickly before anymore of those things show up.”

“Let me look at your wounds first.” Worry etched lines into her young face.

“No, we don’t have time. Now hurry up!” Arguing wouldn’t get them anyway, and Osiris didn’t have the patience to play who’s the leader.

“Fine but we stop at the ruins so I can look at those!” Her voice was stern and commanding. She climbed on to his back and they bolted off. Howling sounded in the distance but with each step it grew fainter and fainter. Osiris was thankful to have the break at the ruins as rivulets of sweat and blood mixed together coating him in wetness. Kendel jumped off as Osiris leaned back against a wall sliding down to sit.

“Take your cloak off,” he did what he was told. “Your shirt too,” when he hesitated Kendel simply reached over and ripped it further until it dropped to the ground. She gasped and her eyes began to well at sight sight. The wounds themselves may have not been that terrible, but the intricate network of old scars marked his whole body. “This is why you always where your cloak,” her hand ran across his shoulder as if trying to find a way to mend the skin. Her voice shook, “I should be able to stitch these cuts, but the bite should be left to drain.” Using needle and thread from a cloth mending kit Kendel closed the four jagged cuts along his stomach. “Sorry I couldn’t do better,” her voice was almost a whisper.

“Just another addition to my collection,” Osiris’ voice was dry and husky. When he awoke the next day Kendel was sitting nearby with food ready for him. She tried to convince him to rest for the day, but he refused. Even with their pace greatly slowed they reached the north edge of the city before nightfall. Two of Henex’s runners were waiting there to pick Kendel up upon return. As she handed him his pay for the trip a grave silence fell over the two.

“I’m sorry.” She bit her lower lip as she looked down at Osiris.

“It comes with the job, I knew something might happen.”

“Not just that, I mean everything. All those scars,” her eyes started to fill with tears again.

“It’s not your fault,” Osiris began to turn away, “Tell your father I expect more zeni next time I do a job for him. Seeing how dangerous they seem to be.” He raised his arm in a slight wave before setting off.
