Osiris was shadow boxing near a large stream of lava moving through the motions of the latest combination he had memorized. What he had learned from the old martial arts manuals was great, but they did not replace the guidance of a true master. His body moved continuously, as he came to the end of the complicated movements he simply started over without pausing. Each drill gained a little more speed. Each punch snapped out faster and faster, each kick flew out without thought, his cloak whirled around him wildly. The wounds on his stomach burned having only a few days to heal. Osiris ignored the pain pushing himself harder and harder. He could feel the well of energy locked inside himself start to open, and his limbs began to glow. The power built up until his entire body felt as though it were on fire. No longer able to hold it in, he brought his leg across his body in round house kick rocketing towards a stone pillar. His leg smashed into the pillar breaking off large chunks but ricocheted back. Again he was unable to release his ki threw a kick as he did a punch.

“God damn it!” Osiris brought a glowing fist down on the same pillar shattering it. Small boulders rained down from the collapse. As one feel towards him he struck it with a left hook reducing it to mere pebbles. He stood staring at his hands, “If I could just do the same with my legs I would twice as strong!” He jumped to another nearby pillar and began kicking furiously at it alternating between both legs. Rock chips flew as he punished his own legs for their disobedience. Finally the pillar gave way under the onslaught, unable support itself. As the base cracked the top began to fall as a tree would. Before it hit the ground Osiris caught it on his shoulders. His legs shook with the exertion that it took to hold the giant stone. He stood there in a squatting position until his legs felt as though they would collapse under him. With a great heave Osiris brought himself up right letting the pillar fall, cracking into large pieces. While he caught his breath he noticed a group approaching.

“Osiris! Osiris!” A group of four teenagers ran towards his training grounds waving their arms. He snapped around in alarm. Every once in a while others his age would come and ask him for things to do. Almost always it was the boys who wanted to get stronger, but lately they had formed their own group with their own place to train. In truth it was better that way; Osiris wouldn’t have to worry about falling debris killing one of his cohorts. This was different though. No one had the nerve to blatantly interrupt his training. Something had to be wrong! With a great rush of adrenaline he sprinted towards the newcomers.

“What’s wrong?” An odd feeling struck him when his voice came out cold and emotionless as ever. Something wasn’t right with him. A sickening feeling washed over Osiris as he realized he wasn’t worried at all. He was just eager for another chance to prove himself. Since his last fight with the strange beasts of the north he had redoubled his training even with his wounds still healing.

One boy spoke up while the others were still panting. “We found it! We found the entrance to the lost treasure mine!” The joy in all of their eyes as they looked at Osiris was puzzling. Clearly they were eager to explore the mine themselves, so why were they here? As though she had read his mind another girl in the group spoke up, “No one will let us go down there though. We tried to convince the elders to let us but they were just being stubborn!”

“So why are you all here? You know full well I won’t over turn the elder’s decisions on such matters,” Osiris eyed them suspiciously.

Yet another boy chimed in and Osiris couldn’t help but think they all had the same brain wave pattern. “But you don’t have to! Elder Minu said we could go down there if you explored it first to make sure it’s okay!” For the thousandth time Osiris wished the elders would leave him out of such matters. He sighed, and then nodded his acceptance of this new task. Instantly the four teens were dragging him to their new discovery while cheering triumphantly.

Osiris stood at the entrance to the mine starring into the darkness. Something stirred inside him like a snake uncoiling after a long winter of hibernation. He glanced at the teenager handing him a flashlight and an extra battery. He looked back at the mine and thought to himself, “Don’t they feel that? It’s like there is something in there calling to me. Not exactly “me” though.”

“Hey. Are you okay? What are you waiting for?” A flash light nudged his hand, but Osiris shook his head.

“I think I will be fine without the flashlight,” he told the other youths. “Go back to the elders and tell them where I am. We don’t know how large this place is, but I will try to be back before nightfall.” Osiris walked into the mine lighting up his left hand with a purple glow. As his eyes adjusted more and more to the dark tunnels he began picking up speed.

For a long time there were no side tunnels to explore, only the large entrance corridor that sloped gradually down. The walls were rough with tool marks indicating only two possibilities. Either this tunnel is very, very old more so than even the legend claims. Or this mine was dug by slaves. Then again, maybe it was both. The thought made Osiris grimace. It wasn’t the only unpleasant thought that entered his mind. With as many stories as there were about lost treasure hunters coming into this place it was only a matter of time before he found a corpse. What concerned him more was how they became corpses. The anticipation was growing in him.

Finally he came to large open area, and before him laid three tunnels. Osiris stood there waiting. He knew eventually the feeling that had called him into the cave would point him in the right direction. A small tugging sensation gradually pulled his mind to the left tunnel. Grudgingly he continued working his way deeper into the mine. Minutes passed by into what seemed like hours and even though this passage way had deviations each one seemed to be a fruitless endeavor. Those that did not come to a dead end simply turned back on themselves to meet up with the main tunnel once more. Impatience quickly built into frustration.

Coming into a larger section of the passage Osiris’s stomach won out against the nagging calling in his mind. Putting his back to a wall he slid down pulling the tasteless nutrition bar from his cloak. The sound of whooshing air made Osiris tense, but it was already too late. Something hard and scaly slammed into his chest knocking the wind out of him. Again the sound came; Osiris dove hearing the boom of an impact behind him. Rolling and coming to a knee he forced as much ki into both arms lighting up the open space. A large reptile charged him with six powerful legs pounding against the hard rock floor. A fanged maw rushed to snap close around Osiris’s body. He jumped flipping around to kick off ceiling driving back down towards the over grown lizard. Before Osiris could land a blow he was forced to turn away countering not one but two separate tails. Twirling through the air he managed to avoid being hit for the moment.

Landing heavily Osiris back peddled madly. The reptile turned towards him attempting to ram him against the wall. Bracing himself Osiris caught the creature’s giant skull forcing it to ground and pinning it with one foot. Just as he had expected both tails came at striking speed slamming into his prepared forearms. Sliding his arms around Osiris gripped the tails under his arms pulling hard. Lifting up his foot the huge lizard slid across the ground flipping belly up. With great exertion the scaled monster came off the ground bouncing off the wall just to be turned and bounced off the other slide. Six times Osiris slammed the creature until the stitched cuts on his stomach burned fiercely.

“Now damn it, stay down or the next time I’m going to have a new scale cloak.” Grumbling was the only semblance of a response from the twitching lizard. Osiris continued his march down the corridor thinking to himself, “How many more stupid monsters are going to try and eat on this god forsaken planet?”

Sometime later the horrid smell of death permeated the darkness around Osiris. With the increasing stench though came the increasing desire to push deeper into the mine. He must know what lies at the bottom of this cavern. If there really was treasure to be had it may just be enough to help get the Saoirse to a better home. On the other hand a part of him hoped it would be something that could help make him stronger. Lost in thought and careless from the monotony of the endless tunnels Osiris was unaware of the looming wooden door ahead of him. His face plant against the wood echoed. “Who the hell just puts a freaking door in a mine? Ahhh, I’m tired of wondering around this mine. I swear to the gods if there isn’t something in here I’m going to collapse this whole place!”

Osiris didn’t bother to see if the door worked he just kicked it in. His patience may have been running low, but it was unusual for him to lose his cool. The odor from inside the room was almost unbearable. A small fount of lava poured from the ceiling into a hole through the floor. The fount gave off a dim ghastly light. Scattered about the room were corpses in various stages of decomposition. In the middle of this horrid place sat alone man clad in rusted armor. Before him was a small flat rock with coin sacks piled high and with what looked like a black pearl sitting atop it. An aura of crimson pulsed twice around the small black orb. Osiris clenched at his chest as two sharp pains shot through him.

“Do you coming seeking us youngling?” the voice sounded like the rustling of dried leaves.

“Us, you’re alone in a room with a bunch of dead bodies. Are you crazed?”

“Dead, such a relative term.” Corpses around the room began to twitch and drag themselves to their feet. “Would you like to be part of us?”

“Frankly, no,” Osiris flicked his eyes from one side of the room to another. He rolled his shoulders; it was only a matter of time now.

“It was really more of a rhetorical question,” an odd rasping noise echoed through the room. Must be what that thing considers laughter. The bodies ran towards him awkward, but surprisingly fast. Osiris crushed each one under heavy kicks not wasting the time with getting close enough to throw a punch.

“You are stronger than most youngling.” Without warning the warrior charged forward slashing with a drawn sword. Osiris ducked under the attack and delivered his own blow. The warrior brought down the hilt of the sword on Osiris’ back dropping him to a knee. Pulling back the sword came thrusting at his face. Rolling onto his back, he kicked the warrior back away from him.

“How did you not feel anything? I dented your armor,” Osiris gritted his teeth and clenched his fist. What kind of metal can be so corroded and still not break. I should have punched right through it. The thought worried him. Again the warrior charged, but this time he was prepared. Catching the back of his foes arm, Osiris stomped down on the warriors’ knee breaking the leg. With a grunt he brought the back of a fist across the enemies’ helm. The clang of metal against stone shattered the quiet in the mine. A bleach white skull rolled from the helmet as the rest of the body crumpled before Osiris.

“You are the one!” The dark orb pulsed again.

“What are you doing to me?” Osiris doubled over in pain as the orb continued to beat. “Release me from this witchcraft!”

“But you were meant to be with us. You would not be in pain if you stopped denying our bond. Come youngling, take the orb.” Compulsion invaded Osiris’ mind like an over whelming flood. His body jerked around haphazardly as he fought the urge to grab the black jewel. As he grew closer to the orb the pulsing became faster and faster. The pain spread from just his chest into the rest of his body. Soon the pulsing light started emanating from Osiris body as well. Drawing closer still the flashing lights became so fast that one blurred into another bathing the whole room in a steady crimson glow.

“Damn what am I doing? I can’t stop myself!” When his hand came within inches of the orb small bolts of red lightning snapped back and forth between the two. The black stone jumped from the mound of coin sacks into Osiris’ hand with such force it knocked him off his feet. He screamed in pain as the orb began to sink into his palm. Clenching his wrist Osiris thrashed around trying to use his ki to force the orb from his hand. It was a grave mistake. The energy sped up the absorption completing it in seconds. Shockwaves of ki radiated from Osiris’ body shaking the cavern around him. He tried to focus on surprising the onslaught from the strange being. The effort was hopeless. It was like trying to deny a part of himself, a part of his own nature.

Whispering voices touched his mind. “So much senseless pain child. Just accept us. Together we will be stronger. Don’t you want to be stronger?”

“I’d sooner die than be controlled by you things!” Osiris condensed his mind and then exploded it outwards pushing the voices from the fringes. He had finally pushed too hard, the world around him turned to black.

Osiris woke up face down against the stone floor. His head still pounded from the invasive orb’s attack. Sitting up he stared into the palm of his hand. Not a single mark indicated anything had happened, but somehow his heart beat felt different. Staggering to his feet Osiris fought to keep himself balanced. After regaining his posture he grabbed two of the bulging coin sacks and tied them to his belt. Turning to leave Osiris froze. There in the doorway stood the same large reptilian from before. “Of course,” sighing heavily he shifted his weight bending at the knees slightly.

The creature snarled and snapped his jaws before charging head first into combat. Stupid beast was predictable. Rolling out his back Osiris got his feet under the creature’s chest. Soaring over top the mound of coin pouches the beast crashed into the far wall. The fount of lava enveloped the lizard beast’s head melting it from a motionless body. Drawing a large knife from his belt Osiris walked to the scaled corpse. “Actually I changed my mind. I’m going to make boots out of you.” Cutting away several large strips he then shoved the rest of the body into the lava. Before he could walk out of the room Osiris looked down at skeletal warrior, “Guess I shouldn’t just leave these bodies lying around.”

Fighting back the urge to vomit Osiris trudged about the room tossing the corpses into the flow of the lava. It wasn’t exactly a proper burial but he figured cremation would be better than just rotting on the ground. Finished with his unsavory task Osiris glanced at the pile of untouched zeni purses. His arms were full with hide and his belt was already weighed down uncomfortably with some of the loot. The rest would have to wait until another time.

Stumbling through the corridor Osiris came back to the room that leads into several different tunnels. Making his way to the main tunnel in order to get out of mine he turned in horror. The other two corridors were calling to him now. The last one nearly killed him and who knows what that damn orb actually did to him. Osiris sprinted from the mine. Now was not the time to be getting into anymore freaky situations. Reaching the entrance Osiris dropped the strips of hide and rushed to the nearest bolder. Hugging the huge rock he raised the whole thing several feet in the air. Walking back to the entrance he slammed the stone down closing off the mine. Osiris sat there for several moments collecting his thoughts, but quickly he fell into brooding. Quickly he snatched up the hide pieces and stomped off back to Saoirse’s hideout in Iron Mountain.

Walking into the cavern’s it was well past dark and the guards on duty tried to question him as to why he was out so late. Osiris glared at them and growled as he walked past. The guards stepped back open mouthed falling silent. Continuing his march he dropped the leather off in his quarters and made his way to the main hall to find some food. After heaping large amounts of dried meats and fruits onto his plate Osiris took a seat in a poorly lit corner. Word soon spread of his late return.
Half way through his meal the group of four teenagers approached the small table he sat at. Their mouths were curved up in eager smiles and they stepped quickly to join him. They all spoke at once.

“So did you find anything?”
“What was it like?”
“Were there any monsters down there?”
“Can we go down there ourselves now?”

Osiris chewed his food slowly listening to all of their questions. When they had finished he looked each one of them in eyes and then shook his head back and forth. He took another bite without saying a word.

“Ahhh, why not Osiris?”
“There really are monsters down there?”
“Did you at least bring something back?”

The last question struck a chord, “Yeah I brought some stuff back. No one other than me is going down there though. I’m not even sure how much of the place I actually explored and I already found things that nearly killed me. I’ll make another trip down there when I am feeling better and have time to spare. For now do me a favor and stay away from that place.” Each of the smiles disappeared and were replaced by impatient scowls. The youngest boy with orange hair was the first to lose his temper.

“You just want to keep it for yourself! Don’t you Osiris? I don’t even get why my mom says you are our leader when you hardly do anything! You just train all day and then run off to do things without us! Then when you come back you expect us to say it’s cool because you have some money for our treasury! That’s Not Fair!” The boys face was beat red and his nostrils flared as he breathed in and out.

“Fair, fair?” Osiris felt the rage uncoil in his heart. “You think I’m not fair! I have bled to make everyone here free! I have watched my allies die in an attempt to give people like you a chance to be happy! You should be glad I don’t have to go on raids anymore because that means there are less slaves being worked to death! Every day I train it is so I can find a way off this rock and to a better home, not just for me but everyone here!” He stared at the four young ones before him gawking in fear. Even some of the older members were watching because this was the first time Osiris had raised his voice in anger towards another Saoirsen. Lowering his voice to a growl he went on, “I will not have you or anyone else here disrespect me. What I do is in the best interest for this group, and it only makes logical sense that the stronger I am the better protected we all are. Want more than just a piece of what I earn putting my own life on the line? Fine!” Osiris slammed the two zeni pouches onto the table. “Take it since you clearly know what best to do with it. As for going down into that mine be my guest. Just as soon as you can move that boulder out of the way you are free to go get yourselves killed.” Osiris stood from the table and marched out of the main hall into his quarters.

Osiris was lying in his stone, almost coffin like bed. First he would light up his left arm, royal purple as usual. Then he would light up his right hand, crimson. It was as though his ki reflected the division growing inside him. It was easy to explode with anger on the ungrateful teen, something that in the past would have never happened. Osiris had always worried about giving into his dark and aggressive side but now it was different. It was like the orb was using his wild side to gain entrance into his mind. “Great, now I have to worry about my own mind turning against me. Just another pain in my ass I guess.” He was happy to escape into sleep.

Early the next morning Osiris woke groggy and with a dull ache in his back. Reaching a hand over his shoulder he thought it must have been from the warrior’s hilt hitting him. Pulling himself up right out of the stone box Osiris found himself sitting face to face with the girl who had been among the four would be explorers. “Well, I take it you have something important you want to talk about Helana?”

“Yes, I wanted to bring these back to you,” she held up the two zeni purses. “I also wanted to say not all of us are hot headed like that. More than that though, I have been getting tired of training with the boys. Maybe I could start coming to your training grounds. I swear I won’t get in the way. You can put me off to the side somewhere,” Helana bit her lower lip.

“I guess you can come along with. A proper routine is all you need. Past that it will all be up to on what you actually get done. I’ll not be your teacher and some of the days you will be there alone. Sure that’s what you want?” Helana nodded confidently. “So be it, let’s get moving then. Oh, one more thing. Don’t sneak into my room again. It’s just weird.”
