The heat was sweltering along the volcanoes side. Each drop of sweat sizzled and then disappeared as it hit the hot rock near the rim. Small tremors struck every so often forcing Osiris to focus on his balance. He was almost to the top, almost free of his burden. By dragging a large rock up the volcanoes’ side everyday and then sprinting back down he built strength and speed. More importantly the sheer heat forced him to get tougher. It was this kind of training that scared away any would be partners. Today was different though. For a week now Osiris had become accustomed to Helana following his training program alongside him. Even though she struggled with even the simplest drills he found her determination impressive.

Although they never truly spoke all that much it seemed to be inevitable they would spend much of their time together. Both of them had the advantage of not needing a mask to breathe the harsh air of Cauldron. They shared the label mutt for not knowing who their peoples were. More than those things, she didn’t look like the others. Most of the people in Saoirse were Kelioxain or Lismians. Instead Helana looked much like a Kekko save for the patch of pink scales that runs from her shoulders to the middle of her back. Her strength also made her the butt of many insecure boys’ jokes. From the very beginning Osiris wondered if she had simply gotten tired of being harassed or if the boys kicked her out of their training group. Neither would surprise him. If there was one thing that Osiris truly did enjoy, it was their lunches together. Past what they were going to do the rest of the day there wasn’t much chatting. What he liked was being able to have a meal out in the open without the other person constantly messing with a mask.

Finally Osiris reached the base of the volcano taking ragged shallow breathes. He watched Helana stumble and slide down desperately trying to find good footing. Another tremor struck putting her on the ground face up. “Come on your barely even halfway down. Stop taking a nap and get down here, I want to eat lunch.” He smirked a little seeing the silver haired girl pop back onto her feet and continue her unsteady decent at a slightly faster pace. When she reached the bottom she dropped to a knee holding her side. “You okay there?” Helana’s breathing was even worse than his own, but she nodded her head yes.

A long minute passed before Osiris helped her to stand and they began to walk. Eventually Helana could speak, “I think I need to work on my balance more.” They sat down under an overhang that kept the sun off their heads. Osiris contemplated the idea quietly as he began chopping down on a nutrition bar. Surveying his training grounds he quickly realized there wasn’t really a place set aside for working on balance and agility. Most of the space was dedicated to developing strength and toughness. An idea suddenly came to him.

“West of here there is that network of ravines. They would be too narrow to really do anything if we dropped down into them. But if we stay up on top of them we could jump and step over the gaps or even run along the length of the ridges. That would be less boring than simply standing on a rock one footed all day.”

“Sounds good. Hey, do you know what is on the other side of those ravines?" Her eyes were curious and intense. She clearly wanted to explore and see something new.

“No, I don’t really go out west all that often. There is no reason we can’t find out though.” Osiris watched as the green eyed girl next to him lit up with a smile. After they finished eating both of them started the five mile run to the ravines. For Osiris it was really more of jog, but he was happy to not be sprinting on a full stomach. There wasn’t really much to see along the way except a small volcano erupting in the far distance. A half-hour later they reached the edge of the ravine network.

Osiris stepped out onto a thin rock surface testing his footing. The next foot brought him into a wide stance. Jumping slightly he went down into a crouch gripping the ledge with one hand. Comfortable he looked back towards Helana motioning for her to join him. It took her a while to get use to the limited ground beneath her feet. Osiris nodded in approval, “Okay now run a ways out and come back.” Within moments she was back having only wobbled a few times. “Good, let us go see what is on the far side. Shall we?” Osiris took off bounding from ledge to ledge in a zigzag pattern. Helana was right behind him easily keeping pace by running in a straight line rather than her friend’s haphazard course of direction.

After about an hour of running they came to a brief pause in their training. “This is killer on my feet,” Helana’s voice was tired and breathless. Ahead of them looked to be a circular clearing.

“See that empty space up there? We can rest there for a while, should be around the midpoint anyway. It does look a little odd though doesn’t?" Approaching the lip of the empty ring Osiris considered how it was made. Ideas of meteors, comets, and other types of explosion ran through his mind. A few more steps and his curiosity was soon sated.

Pieces of dull rusted metal were scattered about the crater. In the center sat an older model of a Saiyan space pod or at least that’s what it appeared to be. The hull was smashed into an irregular shape with fist sized punctures dotting the whole thing. There was no sign of any corpse but if Osiris had to guess he would have said it was shot out of the sky. No trace of any comings or goings could be found among the wreckage.

“Maybe we could salvage something from it Osiris?” The idea wasn’t bad but an uneasy feeling settled over him like a wet blanket.

“Go check over there. I want to scout out the area a little bit to make sure we aren’t just walking into a trap.” Helana nodded to him and started running around the rim clockwise. Osiris walked counter-clockwise about halfway to the other side before something caught his eye. “HELANA RUN!” A hard right hook hit him in the stomach sending him crashing into the crater. A dark haired man with a tail wrapped around his waist stood with amusement in his eyes and pointing a glowing finger at a stunned Helana. Osiris launched himself at the nameless Saiyan knocking his hand towards the sky and grabbing at the mask on his face. The ki blast shot into the sky harmlessly before Osiris was knocked back again. This time though he had a mask in his right hand.

The now bare faced Saiyan took one breathe and grimaced. The device over his left eye beeped, “Decent power level kid, but you are still going to die.” Two glowing orbs appeared as he raised his hands to attack. Osiris leapt forward punching the stone wall his new enemy was standing on. The orbs disappeared as he fell a few feet in the air before coming to a stop. Osiris reached up grabbing a foot and pulling his opponent down to the ground. Slamming against the rock barely fazed the stranger who kicked Osiris back before he could start stomping him into the dirt. Rolling backwards he stood to face Osiris, “You got some moves I’ll give you that much.”

Osiris charged without listening to what his opponent had to say. Clearly the stranger was not breathing comfortably without his mask. This was an advantage he would have to press because there was no way of telling how strong his opponent actually was. Throwing a continuous stream of straight punches Osiris kept his arms tucked in tight to avoid making an opening. All the while he backed his foe up against the wall. The Saiyan struck back wildly trying to regain lost ground.

Gritting his teeth Osiris leaned into the violence taking a blow to the chest and stomach. It was all the time he needed to deliver a glowing haymaker into his foe’s chest. The Saiyan lifted off the ground a few inches and crashed through the stone wall behind him. After going through one wall he was stopped against the next ravine’s wall. Osiris kept the pressure on trying to keep his opponent close to him, but he rushed too quickly. For his eagerness he took a hard kick to the gut. Just as Osiris was about to take another blow, the Saiyan caught a punch with the side of his head. His scouter fell to pieces as he stumbled to the side. Helana hadn’t run but was merely waiting for a chance to join the fray.

Ki orbs reappeared in the stranger’s hand again. Osiris stepped in front of Helana with his forearms crossed in an x. Glowing balls slammed into his arms and shoulder burning through his clothes. Helana swung around Osiris already throwing a kick, but the Saiyan caught it with an elbow. It wasn’t much more than a distraction. Osiris grabbed for his arms clamping down his grip as hard as he could. A knee flew into his stomach as his opponent tried to break free. It was too late. Helana was already around him wrapping her arm under his chin putting him into a choke hold. The Saiyan tried desperately to break out of both of their grips. Between the poor Cauldron air and now having his airway constricted it was only a matter of time before he lost consciousness. Each moment that passed though cost Osiris another knee to the stomach.

By time they had brought down their opponent Osiris was leaning against a wall puking. Helana sat on the Sayains chest staring at him in case he should wake up anytime soon. “You okay Osiris?” She glanced back at her friends struggling to breathe between clenched teeth.

“No…..I think…..he broke…..six of my ribs.” Holding his ribcage with one arm he shambled over to the unconscious man. Stopping just before him he waved his free arm for Helana to get up. “Go check around for some clues to why this guy is here and why he attacked us. I’ll sit on him for a while.”

Helana frowned at him, “Are you sure? You aren’t doing so hot.”
Osiris made a glowing fist, “He so much as twitches before you get back I’m just going to kill him.” He didn’t want to die just to get some answers, but if there was a bounty on his head he had to know quickly.

While Helana was out searching for clues around the destroyed ship Osiris searched through his clothes. He found some food stock and a few pages of folded paper. He quickly shuffled through the papers; most were in a language he couldn’t understand. There were several that he could understand though. The only ones that seemed all that important were the ones he couldn’t read. Two of them held the insignia of the Saiyan Army. Osiris was puzzled by this. The stranger wasn’t wearing any armor as most soldiers do, his ship was a piece of crap, and he didn’t seem to be much stronger than a usual foot soldier might be. So why was he here alone, and not off somewhere training on a base with his comrades?

Helana walked back to where the others were. “I didn’t find much other than a rough tent set up. He must not have been here too long. By the looks of it I would say he put those holes into his own ship after it crashed. Oh, wait, I did find this communicator under his tent.” She pulled out a small device with several small buttons, a screen no bigger than a single finger, and a speaker.

“The guards use a couple of communicators to send messages to each other. Do you think you could get on the same frequency and call them out here? The hover craft should be able to skim over top these ravines.” Osiris clenched his jaw feeling pain each time he breathed. Speaking wasn’t helping with the hurt, but he couldn’t very well make the situation better being a mute.

“Yeah I think I can do that as long as this thing has a decent range.” Osiris nodded, turned, and then punched their captive in the head. “What the hell was that!?” Helana stopped playing with the device and stared at him.

Osiris shrugged, “We can’t very well have him waking up in the mean time, can we? Tell them to bring chain, lots of it.” Helana frowned. She may have not liked the situation, but she knew he was right.

After a lengthy conversation with the guards to convince them it wasn’t some sort of a trick, several members of Saoirse were dispatched. While they waited the hour it would take for their ride to show up Osiris would punch their sleeping captive every ten minutes.

“Between you punching him and the lack of breathable air out here he is going to have brain damage.” Helana’s voice was oddly distant and she was looking up at the sky.

“He is still breathing and I’m not going to risk him waking up. Besides he couldn’t have been all that smart to begin with.” Osiris looked up at the sky but didn’t see anything. He looked back down and noticed Helana had moved a little closer.

Do you think Im weird? Now she was staring down at the ground and rubbing the pink scales on the back of her left shoulder.

Osiris squinted at her, “You’re seriously going to ask a guy with horns that question?” He shifted slightly feeling a twinge run up his right side. The grunt that slipped past his lips was irritating to him.

“You should take your shirt off and let me look at that. We should probably wrap you.” The concern in her voice was genuine, but her face was flushed.

Osiris snorted thinking back at how Kendel had made much the same request. “I think I will be fine until we get back to the mountain.” He wondered how he kept getting himself into situations that made people want to take off his shirt. Helana frowned at his answer and moved closer reaching towards him. Suddenly two hover cars showed up above them with men calling out to them. “Well looks like it is time to go. Give me a hand up, please.” She pulled him up faster than he anticipated bringing them face to face. He could feel her breathe. Osiris shifted uncomfortably and then slowly stepped away from her to talk to the men that had showed up to.

Within moments the Saiyan was wrapped in thick chain from shoulder to feet. Shortly after that everyone was on the transports and heading back to the mountain hold. As they rode back Helana told everyone what had happened. Osiris remained silent, planning his next move. This situation could bring his grand scheme crashing to the ground or it could help him reach his goals all that much quicker. If the dominions truly had begun to fall he was obligated to make sure they fell in the favor of the Saoirse.

He was still lost in thought when someone tried talking to him, “Hey, Osiris, what are we going to do with this guy?”

Looking at the Saiyan’s face he replied, “We are going to listen to what he has to say. When we get back though, have some people go gather a few day’s worth of night root.”

“You’re going to drug him? Is it really necessary with all this chain on him?” The tall blue haired man raised an eyebrow at him.

“Honestly I don’t know. Helana and I might have beaten him, but I am still not sure exactly how powerful he is. We had a lot of advantages over him and he was cocky. The next time we may not get so lucky.” The man nodded his understanding and the rest of the trip passed in silent contemplation for everyone.

Sitting in the lowest room carved out of Iron Mountain Osiris waited for the stranger to awaken. He drank a steaming cup of tea with his eyes closed to the world around him. Meditation took his mind away from the stabbing pain each time he breathed. The sound of chains rattling forced him to open his eyes. Struggling in a dazed confusion the saiyan attempted to shrug his way out of his bonds.

“What, what is this? Why am I tied up like this? Damn it let me out of these chains!” Grunting he thrashed around on the stone bench trying to break free.

“Calm down. I need a couple of answers from you. We can start with your name.” He took another sip of his hot tea.

“Go to hell I’m not going to tell you a thing! You should have killed me when you had a chance; it’s only a matter of time before I break these chains.” Again the nameless stranger began to thrash around.

“Don’t be rude. Between the beating you took and being drugged I am not all that worried about you breaking those chains.” Osiris was polite, but his voice was cold. “Now my name is Osiris, please tell me what your name is.”

“You drugged me? What kind of a coward are you?” He struggled once more, and then finally gave up. “So what are you going to do to me if I don’t answer your questions?”

“Nothing. I’ll simply post several guards to watch you until you feel a little more polite. While you wait each and every one of your meals and drinks will be laced with night root, should keep you quite. I guess when I say meal I should really say snack. I don’t intend on feeding you well, but you won’t die at least.” Osiris finished his cup of tea with on last swallow, “Well, what do you think?”

“What are you going to do with me if I do talk?” His face was contorted with disgust and his voice was filled with reluctance. Osiris’ plan had worked. Threatening him with death would have been pointless. However, the idea of simply wasting away doing nothing must have struck a chord in the Saiyan.

“Well if you comply with my requests you will be given a large meal. This meal will contain enough night root to knock out someone three times your size for several days. When you are out we will buy your passage on a freighter, with your money of course. By the time you wake up, I would imagine you will be half a galaxy away.”

“Yeah, right. Why exactly should I trust you to do what you say?” Osiris just stared at him. “Guess I don’t really have much of a choice do I?” Again Osiris remanded silent. “Fine, my name is Tannor. What else do you want to know?”

Osiris nodded his head, “What rank are you in the Saiyan Army?”
Tannor spit on the ground, “They kicked me out. They didn’t like that I was more interested in making zeni than getting stronger so I could do their dirty work.”

“So then you are here to make some zeni then?”

“I’m here for a job and get a new ship to boot. That’s not happening now though, is it?”

“What job and who is paying you for it?” Osiris’ voice was smooth and calm, but inside anger stated to flow.

Tannor smiled, “I thought that would be obvious. I am here to kill you. As for who paid for your head, that would be a man by the name of Rojjack. You should pay him a visit at the east shipping dock, hanger 16.”

“Why did you just tell me that?” Osiris’ jaw clenched.

“Because, he reminds me of my old officer, nothing but an arrogant ass! He should be there tomorrow around noon. Tell him I said hello.”

Osiris stood up and left the room without speaking. The arrangements were made and a meal was brought to Tannor. By nightfall Osiris and a large group of guards had him on a ship and off planet before they were even back at the mountain hold. The whole while Osiris contemplated his next move, with his ribs fractured it wouldn’t be smart to move on his enemies just yet. On the other hand he may never get another chance like this. It seemed like nothing ever went right on this planet. Rojjack had to be dealt with though, and maybe he could beat the name of his boss out of him. Nothing was going to be solved tonight though and Osiris desperately needed sleep. There was nothing else to do but return to his chamber and hope that his body would heal enough to fight. His bed called to him.

His sleep was restless and his dreams unnerving. Osiris found himself floating among the stars drifting aimlessly. Dark shapes darted around him and an odd feeling of familiarity washed over him. An unnatural voice sounded from the dark whispering to him from all different directions. It was as though dozens of voices spoke in unison,“Hello again youngling. Relax we are not here to force you to join us. You made it perfectly clear how futile it would be the first time around.”

“So what do you want then and what are you?” All the dark figures suddenly converged in front of him merging into a single being. As more and more fused together the dark figure turned more and more red. Finally a crimson flame roughly mirrored Osiris’ body.

“We are many and what we want is for you to live. More than that though, we want you to succeed. As you get stronger so shall we when you finally join us. Trust us youngling, someday you will be with us. Until then though there is no reason we can’t get along. Have fun tomorrow.” The crimson flame separated back into the black figures. They swirled around Osiris like a black torrent until everything blurred together. A sharp pain ran through his sides and suddenly he was back in his quarters, lying in his bed.

Osiris sat up running his hands across his stomach and sides. Nothing was hurting, not even a little sore. Lifting up his shirt there wasn’t a bruise to be found. Everything had healed. His contemplation was cut short by a visitor. A woman’s voice called from behind the curtain that acted as a door to his chamber. “Osiris, its Helana. Can I come in?”

Quickly pulling his shirt back down Osiris called for her to come in. As she stepped through the curtain Osiris stood and lit a small lamp sitting on a low table. He motioned for her to sit and take a cup of water he offered. “So what do you want? It’s really early, I just got up.”

Helana twisted the cup of water in her hands, “I know it’s early, but I was afraid you were going to go after Rojjack today while you were still hurt. You’re strong, but for all we know this could just be a trap.”

“It has been too long since we last did any real damage to the slave trading on this planet. This is my chance to deal a decisive blow, maybe even find out who the boss is. If the man pulling the strings is gone we can finally stop worrying about being hunted.” He smiled grimly at Helana, “Besides, I’m not exactly sure how, but my ribs have already healed.”

Her green eyes widened in surprise, “What? How is that even possible? It hasn’t even been a whole day yet!” Leaning over the small table she grabbed at his ribs in disbelief, “You’re lying so we won’t stop you.”

Osiris frowned as Helana ran her hands up and down his sides. “I do not lie to a fellow Saoirsen! You of all people should know that. Now, please let go of me.”

Helana sat back staring into her cup of water,“Sorry I just worry about you. I still remember how badly you got hurt on the raid that set me free.”

Standing, Osiris answered her as he walked out of his chamber. “I’m a lot stronger than I was back then. Nobody is going to stand in my way.”

Helana grabbed his hand, “At least let me go with you. There is no telling what you are going to find there.”

Shrugging her off Osiris took another step, “This isn’t a task for you.” With that he walked out of the caverns and into the harsh Cauldron air. It wouldn’t take him long to reach the city, he wanted to be at the hanger with plenty of time to watch and wait. Jumping down from Iron Mountain Osiris hit the ground sprinting wildly. It would still be early morning when he got to the city and already adrenaline pumped through his veins. Before he had even realized it Osiris had reached the halfway point. Something in the distance caught his eye and he began to slow down. “You’ve got to be kidding me,” Osiris stopped in front of a man wearing simple black clothing.

“Afraid not my friend. Unfortunately for you one of Rojjack’s men saw you load me onto that ship. Before it got a chance to take off they carried me away and gave me the antidote to your little night root. Don’t worry about Rojjack though; I already took care of him when he tried to fire me. Now I am just here for pride!” Tannor clenched his fists at his hips and widened his stance.

“You kind of ruined my day. I was really hoping to find out who his boss was.” Osiris sighed heavily, “Can’t really change that now. I guess it doesn’t really matter who killed them though. Curiosity strikes me though. What exactly were they doing in that hanger?”

Tannor shrugged, “Beats me, I think it was arms trading though. Some dumbass human there thought he could get away with shooting me. Last mistake he ever made, much like your decision to let me go.” The saiyan flew at him, literally. “You don’t have your little friend to help you this time!”

Flipping backwards Osiris landed on his shoulders with his hands on either side of his head and brought his knees to his chest. He then exploded pushing off the ground with his hands and extending his whole body in a double footed kick into Tannor’s chest. The whole motion took but a second and sent his foe flying into the air.

“Who said I actually needed help last time. I can tell now you aren’t that much stronger than me. You just know some fancy tricks, but this time I’m ready to deal with you!”

Tannor stayed up in the air, “Ha, you’re a fool if you think these are fancy!” With a twisted smile the saiyan unleashed a volley of Beam balls at Osiris. Kneeling down Osiris pounded his fists into the ground pulling up large rocks. With quick reflexes he matched each blast of ki with a simple rock forcing them to explode well before reaching their target. Tannor came charging through the cloud of rock residue. Osiris however saw no reason to change tactics just yet. The warrior avoided a pelting by swatting away the stones with his fist, but the resulting dust partially blinded him.

When Tannor finally reached him, Osiris blocked the first jab and side stepped the right cross. Osiris grabbed his opponent’s leg and swung him around before slamming him into the ground. Jumping onto his downed foe he began raining down blow after blow onto Tannor’s chest. Osiris’ savage attack was cut short by a One Fingered Blast that sent him hurtling. Landing hard he rolled back to his feet and sprinted towards his opponent meeting Tannor’s own blitz. The wind swirled around them as the two began trading punches moving in a circle around one another. Tannor landed a hard right cross to Osiris’ chin. Taking the opportunity Osiris grabbed his foe’s arm and rolled him over his hip.

Maintaining his grip Osiris brought his foot slamming down just beneath Tannor’s arm pit. Viciously he pulled up and twisted the arm dislocating it from its socket. Rolling Tannor punched at his opponents only to be blocked by a knee. The fist uncurled and another volley of Beam Balls came flying out. At such close rang Osiris had no time to react let alone dodge all eight of Tannor’s attacks. Each explosion pushed him back further away from Tannor. Osiris dropped to a knee trying to catch the breath that had been knocked out of him.

“That really hurt, but I think you’re at a serious handicap with your arm like that.” Osiris stood once again and began to force ki into his fists.
“I have a feeling that isn’t going to stop you though.”

Tannor got to his feet, grabbed his shoulder, and forced it back into its joint. “HA! Good as new! Face it kid you’re not getting out of this fight alive!” He stood staring directly at Osiris with a smug smile.

Osiris’ response was cold and critical, “Shut up, you are just hiding how scared you are behind that false pride. Nothing but a coward who likes to talk big, that’s all you are Tannor. That is why you got kicked out of the army. I’ve had a chance to spar with a real Saiyan and frankly you don’t even compare.”

“What? When could you have done that on this crappy little planet? You are just lying!” The shock was plain to see on his face.

“I won’t waste my time explaining it to you!” Osiris rushed towards Tannor who lifted into the air. Trying to keep his distance the hovering saiyan unloaded a strong round house kick. “Idiot!” Osiris crushed his foe’s knee with a crippling Blast Punch. Tannor dropped to the ground screaming in pain. Without pause Osiris dropped a ferocious elbow into the injured saiyan’s other knee forcing him to scream again. In agony Tannor desperately fired another One Fingered Blast. Osiris tried to jump out of the way but the ki attack glanced off a shoulder leaving a deep gash.

“I’ll get you for this! Damn it all to Hell!” Tannor clutched at his thighs and beat his head against the ground.

Crimson blood poured out of Osiris’ cut. He grabbed his wound using pressure to stanch the bleeding. “Not much more than a bunch of flesh wounds really. You on the other hand are going to have a hard time walking for the rest of your life. Saiyan or not you’re never going to be the same. You don’t need those legs to fly, get the Hell out of here.”

Osiris turned and started to walk away, but then he stopped remembering something. He strode back and stood over the exhausted and broken Tannor. “What you going to kill me now?”

Bending over Osiris reached into his shirt pulling out a packet of zeni. “You did all this for zeni and your false pride. Now I’ve taken both of those. I’m not going to kill you. I’m going to make you live as nothing, because that’s all you are.” The saiyan lifted his hand pointing at Osiris as if to attack again. “Give it up; you don’t have enough energy left to hurt me.”

The run back to Iron Mountain seemed much longer than his departure. It wasn’t so much the pain that slowed him as the fact that he had nothing to look forward to now. His revenge had been stolen away from him.

By the time Osiris reached the entrance of Saoirse’s caverns he was dizzy from blood loss. When the guards saw him they rushed him to the medicine woman before he even had a chance to refuse. He hated having people take care of him after a fight. Most of the time, the cleaning, stitching, and bandaging hurt worse than when the wounds were actually inflicted. The only relief this time was that the medicine woman had been taking care of him for a long time. She was one of very few people who knew the full extent of Osiris’ scars and where most of them came from.

“These injuries are mostly superficial. These circular burn marks don’t penetrate deep into the skin. Keep this ointment on them and they shouldn’t even scar. Now that the gashes on your right side and left arm are stitched up they shouldn’t hassle you too much. Give it a couple of days to heal before you get back to training all out. If you pull these stitches out you risk re-opening the wounds. Anyway, you will just have to deal with being ugly for a while. Nothing I can do about that bruise across your face.” The old woman smiled at him with sad eyes, “So what happened this time?”

Osiris shrugged, “The same as always I guess. Another greedy person made the mistake of getting in my way. Why do you look so sad?” It made him uncomfortable to see people show their emotions to him. All it did was remind him of how much responsibility weighed down on him to give them a new place they could be happy with.

“Sorry, I still can’t get use to seeing you like this. You probably don’t agree Osiris, but you are still a child. It is not right that you have to fight so hard for people that should be protecting you. Can you honestly tell me one thing you have done for yourself lately?” He just stared at his hands and waited for her to continue. “You need,” – A voice outside the room cut her off.

“You can’t go in there yet,” the man’s voice sounded distressed.

“I don’t care! Move!” Helana came barging into the room anger and worry etched into her sweaty face. Osiris figured she must have just gotten word of his return and ran all the way from the training grounds. She stared at the wounds and scars on his bare torso. The blood drained away from her face and her voice lost its anger, “What happened?” She sat down next to Osiris and ran her fingers gingerly over the stitching on his left arm.

“Our friends Tannor came back. Seems we didn’t do well enough of a job getting rid of him the first time. Lucky for me he wasn’t as strong as we had feared.” He glanced at Helana wishing she would stop touching him. Instead she did just the opposite.

“You should have let me go with you!” She hugged him and buried her head in his shoulder. Every muscle stiffened in Osiris’ body when he felt the wetness of tears on his shoulder. He didn’t know what to do. Looking to the medicine woman was no help. She simply looked at them with a raised eyebrow and an odd smile. This was exactly the kind of situation Osiris tried to avoid. Not only was he unsure what to do, but it was also threatening to his position among the Saoirse. Helana’s demeanor changed rapidly though and she wiped her tears away quickly before raising her head. “Sorry, I just knew something like this would happen. I should have followed you.”

Osiris was starting to become somewhat irritated by her protectiveness, but he suppressed it. “Listen, I am just fine. If you had followed me Tannor may have tried to attack you in order to throw me off my game. And if Tannor hadn’t been there you may have given me away at the hanger. You did nothing wrong Helana. Trust me when I make decisions. It isn’t like you will be alone when you do.” Osiris looked her sternly in the eyes, “Look if you are so eager to help out with this kind of stuff go grab a couple of scouts and go to the city if you want. Check out hanger 16 for me and see what’s up. Do not get caught though and do not do anything more than scouting, please.”

Helana sat up straight and looked him in the eyes for a long moment, “Okay, I can do that. I will be back soon.” She nodded to the medicine woman and walked out. Osiris sighed slightly and shook his head. He had the feeling things were going to get complicated.

“I think she would have kissed you if you so much as twitched.” Osiris fought back the startled expression trying to show on his face. “Most boys your age have a hard time with girls, but you refuse to even consider the idea of having any kind of a partner. Tell me why have you not spent much time with those your own age up until now? Even now I would guess that you don’t actually think of anything other than training around Helana.”

Osiris looked at the old woman curiously. No one ever really talked to him this way. “Frankly I don’t have the time or the room for error that would allow me such thoughts. There is too much at stake to distract myself with unnecessary situations.”

“Room for error?” The medicine woman raised her eyebrows at him.

“Yes, I may not want to be a leader, but I have to be. There is no one else here strong enough to make everyone feel protected. It’s not in me to just order people around. Hell, what I just asked Helana to do was probably the closest thing to an order I’ve ever given. So my only other choice is to lead by example and that means I cannot act my age, even if I wanted to. I would lose the respect of the elders,” his voice was cold and dry. Osiris used his numbness to great effect.

“It’s a great pity I have to agree with you. You freed us from our slavery just to be forced into another form of slavery yourself.” Osiris looked at her feeling the woman spoke more truth than he wanted to hear. “Take this. It’s a little bit of left over night root. Should help you nap for an hour or two. Helana will be back by then with the information you seek. Go now child.” She handed him a cup of water with some grounded root mixed into it.

Downing the drink he stood and began to walk away. Before he disappeared under the curtain Osiris paused, “We are all slaves in one way or another. I accepted that a long time ago.”

Sleep took him quickly with the help of the herbal drink. As his dreams took full effect Osiris found himself standing in a large open grassy field. The pure blue sky above him was tranquil in a way Cauldron’s never was. He recognized the place from his first spar with a saiyan warrior named Zorn. It was the kind of place he wanted to take the Saoirsen to live. He could feel someone else’s presences standing next to him, but I didn’t bother to look. Osiris already knew who it was.

“You fought well today youngling,” the voice was like leaves in the wind. “You should be proud of the scars you earned today.”

“Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate you healing my ribs for me. Still, I think you are some kind of evil creature trying to take over my body,” Osiris was calm and courteous.

“It is true child. There are those among us that which to dominate you and claim this life for themselves. There are also those that wish you to come into their alliances so they can control the will of us.” The creature’s tone changed and the flames around its head flickered as though it were trying to smile. “Some even want you to take control and end the constant strife that plagues our existence. One thing is clear though. You will change how we exist and we will change how you live.”

A flaming punch flew at Osiris’ head compelling him to duck and jump away. Osiris took a fighting stance, “What are you doing creature?”

The flaming figure twitched and convulsed for several tense moments. “Sorry, like we said, strife plagues us.” It was then that Osiris noticed that the being was floating several inches off the ground. As if to respond to his thoughts the creature spoke, “Not all of us like to destroy things without purpose or reason.”

“You’re a strange creature. I wouldn’t imagine a creature that uses the dead to fight on its behalf would have mercy,” Osiris starred at the being deciding that there may be more to learn than he first though.

“Being with you, child has given many of the factions new fervor in their fight to control the collective. Alas, it would seem our conversation has come to an end. We will speak again soon I would imagine, hopefully on similarly pleasant terms.”

Osiris roused slowly; still drowsy from the night root he had taken. He felt an odd pressure against his lips. He moved his hands to feel what it was and caught something something akin to silken threads in his hand. Even more confused he forced his heavy eyes open to find Helana with her eyes closed and leaning over him. With a single heartbeat adrenaline shot through his veins and all the residual tiredness fled his body. He grabbed her shoulders feeling the scales under her shirt with his finger tips. Pushing her away he saw a look of fear come across her pale visage. Osiris opened his mouth to say something, but then closed it before making a sound. What was he suppose to say? What was he suppose to do?

He couldn’t think of anything to say. So he stood, stepping out of his bed. Helana stayed kneeling by the stone bed staring at the ground. Osiris walked towards the entrance of the room and spoke softly, “When you’re ready I will be out in the main hall. I need to know what you found at the hanger.”

The din inside the great hall died down as Osiris came in. Nodding to several people the conversations gradually picked their pace and volume back up. He sat down at his usual place in the corner. Hunger was the last thing on his mind as he sat there with his eyes closed. Hearing footsteps approach Osiris’ muscles stiffened in anticipation of the ensuing conversation. The clanking of a bowl on the wooden table, “Something happen, you look deep in thought.”

Opening his eyes he first looked bowl down at the bowl of meat, potato, and mushroom soup. The steam coming off of it filled his lungs and the smell lingered in his nostrils. Regardless what was on his mind, there was no denying he should eat. Grabbing the spoon he looked up at the old medicine woman, “I can’t help but think you had a hand in this Velva.” He swallowed a spoonful of stew while he waited for a response.

She smiled at him slightly, “Now why would you say that? I don’t even know what happened. You shouldn’t be so suspicious.” Her smile faded, “So, what happened?”

“I don’t want to talk about it,” Osiris shoveled another spoonful of stew into his mouth. Looking up he saw Helana enter the main hall with something in her hand. She walked over briskly, glanced at the two sitting in the corner, and then retreated leaving a note behind. Osiris picked up the note. “It would seem Tannor was telling the truth,” he spoke aloud to himself forgetting he wasn’t alone.

“Hmmm, that bad she can’t even give you the report in person ehh? So what are you going to do about this situation?” She sat back in her chair and folded her arms. The amusement on her wrinkled face was evident.

“I am going to handle the situations that fit my personal talents. The rest doesn’t concern me,” Osiris’ voice was listless. After finishing the last of his stew he stood, “You shouldn’t encourage her.”

“Maybe I shouldn’t have to Osiris. If it were anyone else I think I would have to keep an eye on you two to make sure you didn’t do anything foolish.” She narrowed her eyes at him, “Do you intend to ignore your adolescences forever?”

“Can’t ignore what you don’t have, Velva,” he strode away to his new assignment. His left arm and abs were stiff and sore from his injuries, but he needed something to do.

Velva Caught his arm, “Don’t do anything reckless.”

Osiris walked into a bar filled with smoke and the smell of sweat. Men of the unsavory type sat scattered around the room. He walked to the back of the room and took a seat upon a bar stool. A barmaid busily ran about serving several tables full of patrons.

“Wha’ will ya be drinking?” the bartender had a thick accent and one of his front teeth missing.

“Milk,” Osiris answered him absently as he surveyed the room using the large mirror behind the bar.

“Excuse me?”

“Is, that a problem?” He gave fat bald Kelioxain a glare.

The man scuffed, “I’ll go shee wha’ we have in the back.”

While he was waiting for his drink Osiris watched the men throughout the room. There had to be a leader somewhere among them, the trick was just flushing them out. Unfortunately, the barmaid kept distracting him. Each time she went to a table the men harassed her and groped at her body.

This is going to turn into a cliché moment fast.

The gruff bartender walked back out with a carton of milk with a picture of an odd creature on the side of it. The milk was pure white and for the most part smelled like mint. Osiris pulled out a number of coins and paid for the entire cartoon. Waving the man away when he brought out a glass he simply drank straight from the container. Many of the other patrons were making audible jokes towards his choice. Still the barmaid’s mistreatment weighed heavily on his mind.

He lifted his head to the bartender and asked how long she had been there. “Oh, about a week or sho. She has a debt to be paid wiff’ him,” he pointed a brawny figure towards a heavily muscled blue skinned man.

That wasn’t enough to prove that man was the boss Osiris was looking for though. There was nothing else to do but start some shit and see who gave the orders. It wasn’t long before the opportunity presented itself.

“Let go of me!” A man had grabbed the barmaid around the waist with one arm and trying to run a hand up her dress.

“Shut up,” he threw her on the table knocking mugs and pitchers onto the floor. “What are you going to do? Tell the coppers? HA!”

Cliché indeed.

Osiris moved so fast he only registered as blur. He stopped standing next to the disgusting man. “What the hell do you want?” Osiris took another drink of his milk, looked at the man and kicked him square in the chest so hard his head left a streak of blood when it hit the wall. Men around the room scrambled for their blasters. One hard push with his feet and Osiris was wrapping his arm around another man’s neck. With a violent jerk an audible cracking sounded through the room. For a few seconds the whole place was silent. Taking the few moments to put down his milk carton and then waited.

The blue skinned man was still sitting sipping on his drink, “Kill ‘em.” Almost every man started firing on Osiris. Jumping and turning upside down he bounced off the ceiling towards the first group of men. Energy blasts hit him like hail stones. Hardly even slowed him down, they were nothing compared to the blasts Tannor threw at him. With one hard roundhouse kick Osiris swept away three men at the same time. Grabbing one of victims he swung the unconscious man around using him as a meat shield to absorb the incoming attacks. Sprinting towards four others he threw the man he was carrying at two. The other two dropped as he delivered a vicious punch to one and elbow to the other. He felt bone give way under his blows. Only the three men around the boss we still standing. Charging once more he took direct blaster hits like they were nothing. Osiris threw dual upper cuts to the outside men and hoped into a knee strike to the middle man’s chin. All three of them bounced off the ceiling before coming back to the floor to rest limply, possibly even dead. Osiris was hoping for the later in this case.

“Impressive, but I’m no push over myself,” the blue skinned alien smirked and set down his drink. Osiris walked back over to the first table he started out at. He grunted as he picked up his milk carton. A large hole had drained away all its contents. “Shouldn’t turn your back on me!” the alien jumped out of his chair and rushed at Osiris.

Turning halfway he caught the blue man by the throat and lifted him off the ground. “Bartender do you have any more milk?” The fat man hopped up from behind the counter with a blaster in hand. A bolt of blue energy smashed into Osiris’ face bloodying his nose. “That hurt,” he kicked a chair sending it hurtling into the bartender. The man crashed back against the wall knocking bottles onto his own head. “Girl, what’s your name?”

“I..I’m Kristy,” she was peaking over a table and shaking enough to be seen at a distance.

“Do you mind going in the back and seeing if there is some more milk. It’s sort of a treat considering I can’t store it where I live.” Kristy got up and jogged to the back of the store. Turning his attention back to the flailing man in his grip, “Well, this is the part where you give up and tell me who your boss is or I kill you. Very simple,” Osiris relaxed his grip a little and lowered him until his feet touched the ground.

The blue alien’s voice was raspy as he tried to draw breath and speak at the same time, “Fuck you, I would die anyway if I told you who my boss was.” Osiris picked him back up.

“So is that a no to all my questions?” His captive kneed him in the chin, “I’ll take that as a no. Ah fuck it.” Twisting slightly he chucked the man into the wall head first. The body dropped to the ground with a heavy thud and stayed there, twitching. Turning he saw Kristy standing with another milk carton in her hands, still shaking. “You got anywhere to go?” he asked taking the milk from her. It was a shame such a delicious drink would start to curdle within minutes if he took it outside.

“Not really. Since my father died I inherited his debt and was forced to not only work here, but also live upstairs. I’m not sure what’s going to happen now.”

Osiris thought for a moment, “So you have nowhere to go?” She shook her head no. “Come with me then. It’s not exactly the nicest place to live, but we have room and it’s safe.” Kristy looked around the room nervously.

“I guess, but then again I don’t really have much choice. The city isn’t going to be safe for me until this blows over. I’ll be right back.” Again she disappeared into the back of the store, this time Osiris followed her. He watched her pack silently to make sure there were no tracking devices. After that they walked out of the bar into the street. Once they were past the city limits Osiris carried her on the run back to Iron Mountain. Osiris was thankful for the silence.

At the soonest convenience Osiris left Kristy in the care of Velva, the old medicine woman. He had grown tired of dealing with women and the complications they always seem to bring up. Plus his stitches were giving him angst from all the activity. Sitting down on the floor with his legs underneath him Osiris stirred a small cup of tea. With his right hand under the cup and his left hand on its side he began to meditate. Slowly he focused on brining his Ki around his body and raising the temperature of the tea. Gradually steam began to waft off the liquid. It was then that Osiris stopped raising the temperature and instead concerned himself with keeping the tea in its current state. Closing his eyes he blanked his mind creating a large black nothingness to wonder around in. After he was very relaxed and able to maintain his Ki without thought he began to recreate the bar scene in his head, replaying it over and over again. Each time adding more detail until it was like being there again. Sweat started to form on his brow as he realized how many people he had killed, ten, maybe 12 at the most. A small knot of fear formed in his stomach.

Directing his attention at this new feeling Osiris untied the knot. As more of its true nature came to bear the more he understood where it came from. It was too easy to kill. He had let his frustration get the better of him, or maybe he was just eager. Osiris decided it was a combination of both. It was good that it still weighed on his consciousness. Simply rationalizing it away and then moving on seemed to lead to a dark path. Still though, fear was not the correct response. Thrusting his will at the emotion he forced it to change. He would make it a feeling of obligation to remember those he killed so that he may never lose perspective. Flipping through hi memories he decided on a reasonable number, 34. Reaching out with his left hand he put his palm face down on the short table. Using his Ki he etched the number into the wood. Satisfied he retracted his self exploration and returned to reality. Osiris opened his eyes to an unexpected guest.

I’m really getting tired of people just walking into my room.

“Well that was interesting. So what does thirty-four mean?” Across from him sat Kristy. A blue eyed girl with sharp features and snow white hair. Looked like a mix between human and Avalonian. From her name Osiris guessed he human parent had named her.

“You don’t want to know. Let me guess you tried to get my attention, but couldn’t so you just came in to see if I was still awake?” The exasperation in his voice was evident.

“Ummm, yeah actually. If I am bothering you that much I can leave.”

“No it’s fine. It isn’t you. I have just been having a long month.”

“Isn’t every month long?” a mischievous grin came across her face.

Osiris wasn’t amused, “Why exactly did you come here?”

“Well, I realized I never actually thanked you for helping me. Plus the medicine lady, Velva, said you wouldn’t mind if I dropped by. So, thank you.” Kristy’s grin faded into a soft smile.

He wasn’t sure what to make of her new smile, “Honestly, that was just an excuse. I was going to do that either way. You were just in the wrong place at the wrong time I guess.”

“Or maybe I was in the right place at the right time,” she stared at him with deep blue eyes. Osiris remained quiet hoping she would leave after saying what she had come to say. His solitude would not be restored so easily though.

“Hey, umm, Osiris I came by to apologize about earlier. Can I come in? Velva told me you wouldn’t be busy.”

Oh, for the sake of what little patience I have left! What is that old hag trying to do to me!?

Osiris was too lost in thought to answer, so Kristy did it for him, “Yeah sure, I think he is spacing off.” Helana walked in with a look of curiosity which was quickly answered. “I came by to thank him for helping me. So what is it you have to apologize for?” Helana hesitated, “ Ahh, come on, you can tell me. My mom use to say I was a really good listener.”

Okay this is getting out of hand. I just want some peace and quiet in my own room!

Helana went to open her mouth, but Osiris beat her to the punch. “Hey, I am starting to get pretty tired and I have a feeling Velva would love to hear this conversation. So if you two don’t mind I’m going to hit the sake,” it took every ounce of his self control to speak politely; another worrying thought indeed.

“Oh, okay well I guess we can go back to her room then,” Kristy shrugged and stood up.

“I’ll catch up to you in a second,” Helana waited until the other girl was out of the room. “Like I said, I’m really sorry about earlier today. I just-“

Osiris cut her off raising his hand slightly and then let silence sit between them for a few seconds. “I accept your apology even though you don’t have to give me one. Listen I don’t know what’s going on in your head and I don’t really want to know. Now I enjoy having you as a training partner, but that is it. There isn’t the time nor the energy for me to spend on anything other than what will lead to my goals. If anything I should be apologizing,” for some reason it drained him to talk openly.

“You don’t need to apologize. I understand. Maybe-”She stopped herself. Helana stood and slowly walked out of the room. Osiris sat there staring at the curtain for a long time. He half expected Kenel to show up somehow. Just to make his life more complicated. Finally he relaxed though and allowed himself to crawl into bed. Soon he was fading into the black of sleep.

He was sitting on a small plateau looking out over a ridge of volcanoes. The crimson blazing figure sat next to him. Osiris looked over at it, “You know, this is getting kind of weird for me. Are you always going to show up in my dreams from now on?”

“No, it will just be on days that you are stressed and in mental turmoil. The in consistency gives us a chance to enter your mind. Is it really so strange though child? Many people dream of far more fantastical things than this,” the creature’s voice was somewhat softer this time, though the echoing of dozens of voices in one still made Osiris nervous.

“Last time you implied that we might meet like this again, except on less pleasant terms. Does that mean you are going to suddenly change and attack me? Or does it mean that you are just bidding your time?” A great sense of relief came with talking to someone, rather something, that Osiris knew would never get the chance to talk with anyone else.

“We will change eventually. My advice to you is to learn how to control your mind and feelings before that time comes. Admittedly you have done an impressive job with that so far. Lately though, you have been suppressing rather than controlling. There is a man on Namek that can help you. Seek him out when you can. For now rest young one, there is much still ahead.”
