When he returned to Iron Mountain with Farren at his side there was shock throughout Saoirse. Many saw the huge burning creature as an unacceptable threat and that such a wild animal shouldn’t be allowed in the hold. Others like Helana and Velva defended his right to do what he saw was necessary. The whole group seemed to split down the middle with Osiris and the younger members on one side. Standing in front of Osiris and his way into the mountain hold were the elders and most of the older members. This was the first time the group had divided itself against one another.

Funny, I thought a situation like this would bother me. Yet, I can’t seem to care. These fools wouldn’t dare challenge me a year ago when I freed most of them. Now they stand in my way like they have a right to take my home from me if I don’t do what they say. That should piss me off. So, why don’t I care?

Farren’s telepathic voice grumbled in Osiris’ mind, “Maybe it is because you realize something important. This single mountain is not your home. You and I could survive anywhere on this planet. The whole of this world is our domain now. These other two legs are slowing you down Osiris.” Farren snorted a small burst of flame and smoke from his nose.

“See, this creature is dangerous! It will burn everything it touches and what will such a monster eat? We cannot feed him! How many of us will he kill when he turns on us? You cannot tame such a beast Osiris!” The head elders spoke out with fear and anger in his voice.

“Shut up. This creature has a name, Farren. He is no dumb brute. Who do you think you are to challenge the choices I make? Step out of my way or have you forgotten who found this place and brought you all her?” His voice was sharp and cold.

Another elder spoke up this time, “No, you have gone too far this time. You endanger us all, and for what? A single monster you have named Farren. We are grateful for what you have done for us. You however are still a child for a few more years and we cannot let you make rash decisions like this. How did you really think we would react to this?

Again Farren spoke to him, “Maybe you should just beat one of them down. There is no reason for the dominant to take such treatment from those too old to hunt. Go and bite one of them to prove your status!” He began to laugh his deep rumbling chuckle. Osiris just looked at him.
“Did that thing just growl at us?!’

“He was laughing. I did not consider how you would react to this because it shouldn’t matter. You trust me to do your fighting for you, but you think I am a child still. I don’t have time for people that have grown complacent and arrogant. I have brought us a new ally and you berate me like I have not done something wrong even though you do not have the right to do so.

Yet another elder spoke up, this time it was a woman. “You are not the only leader Osiris. And while you may lead us in battle that does not give you the right to do as you please. You are not our master child! Osiris turned his back on them and started walking away. “Where do you think you are going? You don’t get your way and now you are turning your back on your duty? That is childish Osiris and you are only proving our point.”

Osiris stopped and looked down at his feet. It was strange only having his weighted clothes on. His shins were bare along with the portion of his arms not covered by his gauntlets. With a burst of speed he was standing eye to eye with the elder in a mere second. “I will do my duty from afar until I get the respect I have earned. I won’t stand by and be treated as a lesser. He turned his back once more, “Let’s go Farren. The rest of you should stay here. It is your home after all. There is no reason to follow me. I will be back, just not to stay.” Osiris took off running towards the city with Farren at his side.

Walking down the street people either fled to hide somewhere or stopped in their tracks to stare in awe. Several of the city’s police followed them at a safe distance.

“Are you not concerned we are drawing so much attention? I thought you normally tried to stay hidden when you came here to trade or find someone? Why now are we parading down the street?”

We don’t need to worry. No one here is stupid enough to bother us. Plus, I am well aware who the two officers following us are. They are not dirty and after what I did in the bar last week, I don’t think any scout is going to get close enough to find out where we are going. Besides if they started to follow us we could simply out run them.

“Or I could just eat them."

Please, you rarely ever eat meat. You live off the heat of this planet. I guess I really wouldn’t care either way though.

Walking up to the door to the factory Henex owned Osiris realized Farren maight be too big. “I think you might be too big to fit through the doorway. I don’t really want to leave you out here though.”

Farren guffawed, “Do you forget I can change my size Osiris?” His body started to glow slightly and little by little he shrunk his form.

“If you could do that, why did I have to walk down the street with you as a huge monster!?”

“I like to show off sometimes. Besides it’s your fault for forgetting so don’t get all mad at me.” The beast smiled, showing his fangs.

“I’m so sorry I forgot one little detail of your entire life, which you just poured into my brain earlier today. I’ve had a lot on my mind too if you hadn’t noticed. Come on, lets go in, it’s starting to get dark.”

Walking into the lobby the greeting clerk jumped out of her seat and yelled, “What the hell is that?!

Farren started to laugh but Osiris shhhed him. “Don’t worry, he is my friend. I’m here to see Mister Henex. Tell him Osiris is here.”

The clerk sat back down but continued to stare at Farren. “If you were anyone else I would have security throw you and your freaky dog out.” The clerk was snooty and annoying with her whinny voice.

“Interesting it would seem Henex was expecting you to drop by. Or at the very least maybe he was hoping you would drop by. No doubt he has something new planned for you.”

No doubt indeed. Hey, so you guys are basically immortal right? I mean you can’t really die here. You just get sent back to the elemental plane and then come back to this world once your energy has been restored. So, am I like that now that me and you are bound together?

“In a sense, yes. For you it would be different though. The elemental plane and the next dimension are basically the same realm of existence. You would still go to the next dimension while you regain your strength, but you would come back after a certain period of time. How long I am not sure. Still, that does not make you completely immortal. You will still experience death like any other being and should you somehow be killed in the next dimension that would be the end of you. Forever.”

Seems I got pretty lucky meeting you Farren. Most people would kill to have a chance like this.

“Only fools would try so hard for something like that Osiris. There will come a time when everyone you know, except for me, will be dead. You will have to cope with constantly outliving your allies and friends.”

I never really thought of it that way. It doesn’t matter though. The Saoirse itself will never die. Each generation will need a protector. This just means I can pick who that person will be for the rest of, well, forever. When I can’t find someone I will fill the position until I do. A life time of exploring and training can’t be that bad.

“What if the Saoirse does die out though? You will have to live with that forever.”

“Mr. Henex says you can go down to his office. Wait, I don’t think he meant with your dog-thing!” Osiris just walked down the hallway to the office suit where Henex conducted his business. Both of the companions ignored what the clerk had said.

Osiris was sullen when he opened the door and walked into the room. Farren’s words weighed heavily on him. Henex was sitting in his big stiff backed chair with folders sprawled out across his large desk. The room was just as luxurious and well furnished as before. This time it was not as well kept though. Osiris liked that the room now looked as if someone had been working in it.

As for Henex himself, he looked tired and over worked. His dress shirt and pants still gave him a regal look. His hair was a mess, his face was pale, and he had the eyes of man who hadn’t slept in two days.

“Take a seat Osiris; I assume your pet won’t catch everything on fire.” He sat back in his chair with a heavy sigh. “Sorry I look so tired. I have had a lot of things to deal with since my shipments got slowed down. Your companion there looks a lot like the reports I got from the northern shipping yard. I hope you know what you are doing. Those things have been nothing but a headache for me.”

“Really that whole incident was a misunderstanding. However, you don’t look like you are in the mood for a story. I will cut right to the chase. I need a place to stay or at least something to do. I have been having some of my own issues. The last thing I want to do is sit around idly and you more than anyone keep me busy.”

Henex smiled slightly, “Well, it would seem you have arrived at the perfect time. My daughter is starting to get into archeological studies quite a bit lately. I am sure you already knew that. Anyway, she seems to have stumbled across a map that supposedly leads to a sword. A sword made by a man who claimed to be one of the Lost Ones. This blade is said to be guarded by the spirit of the man who created it. I don’t personally believe the legend all that much myself. Still, you have proven twice now that you are capable of protecting my daughter. It makes good sense that you be the one who protects her on this expedition as well. Hopefully it will only take a few days.”

Kenel burst into the room, “It’s true! You came here with one of those things that attacked us not once but twice! What’s going on?” she walked slowly over to Farren.

“Like I said to your father that was really just a misunderstanding. They are actually rather intelligent creatures. Farren is the one who gave me there runes on my arm. They bind us together. It’s a little complicated how it all works and I don’t want to waste anymore of your father’s time. Maybe I can explain it while we travel. Oh, ummm I guess you can pet him if you want.” Farren just shot him a look but didn’t say anything.

Kenel sat in the other chair and gingerly laid her hand on Farren’s head. Henex looked for concerned for a moment but then returned his attention to Osiris. “Tonight you may return with Kenel and me to our home. That will give you time to prepare for the trip in the morning. You have not wasted any of my time by the way Osiris. If anything you saved me the hassle of figuring out how to contact you. Actually I think I am going to call it a day. My bed seems to be calling to me.”

Everyone stood up and walked out of the office suit while still chatting though the converstation had turned more mundane. When they walked out of the door and down the hall Osiris was surprised when they stopped at a set of metal doors instead of going to the exit. He had never been on an elevator before, but he knew what they did. He stepped into the machine without asking a question. When he saw Henex hit the button labeled roof he figured there would be a ship waiting there for them. Surely they did not live in the factory.

Stepping out of the elevator Osiris was surprised to see the entire roof was enclosed with glass panels. It was like walking into a giant greenhouse. Several air ships were parked throughout the area. The four of them walked over to a white ship that was so highly polished Osiris could see his face in the reflection.

“We will take this one, should be comfortable for the four of us. Our home isn’t very far. I think you will like the view. Henex pushed a small button on the ship and a set of stairs unfolded to the ground. The inside was four separate seats covered in some kind of leather. The ship lifted up off the ground as Henex told it to go “home”. It was only a few minutes before they came upon a building at the south end of the city. Really one could only describe it as a mansion standing three stories tall and with its one hanger on the roof. It sprawled for several acres and even included what looked like a huge indoor garden on the west wing. It was a far cry from the cave Osiris was use to.

While eating dinner at a rather large dining table in a room adorned with tapestries and paintings, Kenel started going over everything they would need. Arrangements were made before Osiris could even speak a word. Before he was completely done with his meal he was being swept away by Kenel and several servants to a fitting room. An older seamstress was waiting there with her tape measure in hand. He had to explain that he always wore his weighted clothes and that not wearing his other equipment was not an option either.

“I wouldn’t bother arguing with him ma’am. He gets really stubborn sometimes and I would imagine he won’t let good taste get in the way of his training. Come on Osiris, at least let us take that stuff and wash it for now. With as simple clothes as you wear it won’t take long before you have a wardrobe’s worth of new things. It wouldn’t be fitting to wear that dirty stuff with fresh clothes.

“It isn’t that dirty. I do clean my stuff you know. I guess it wouldn’t hurt though. Fine, take them.” Osiris was standing behind a changing screen in a pair of shorts and a tank top he was given until his new clothes were done. He wasn’t so much shy as he just didn’t want to show everyone the scars still showing.

So, like what we were talking about before. Will I age the same way other people do? Or am I going to stay like this the rest of my life?

Farren was laying across the room with his eyes closed, but Osiris could feel he wasn’t asleep. You will age a little more. I would imagine you will stop aging once you reach your prime. You should not linger on these thoughts though Osiris. It would be much better to ignore it and keep going on the way you did before. Death is a strong motivational concept and you still should be careful what you do with your life. You are far from invincible.”

You are right. This doesn’t change what I need to do now. So do you know anything about this sword?

Osiris could feel Farren dig through his memories, “Yes, I vaguely remember a being who attempted to craft a sword here. I was still very young then believe it or not. I can’t say where it is, but wouldn’t doubt he haunts the blade still. It’s hard to leave behind something that you poured your whole life into.

Before Osiris could reply clothes were being chucked at him from over the changing screen. The seamstress was mumbling something about this being a waste of her skill as Osiris was putting on his new outfit. It was a simple pair long pants and shirt, but the quality was amazing. The pants fit loosely around his legs giving him great range of motion. The shirt fit tightly like a second skin that seemed to move as he moved. Walking out from behind the changing screen a newly finished cloak was thrust into his arms. “Thank you, these all fit great,” while it was the truth Osiris felt it was a waste of time. Sooner or later these would get destroyed.

Kenel walked back in with two other servants helping carry his weighted clothing. The seamstress immediately walked over and started measuring everything. “What did you buy these at a flea market? None of these fit you like they should. Go do whatever it is you need to do. I will have your things back before everyone goes to bed.” Shrugging his shoulders Osiris walked out of the room barefooted with Kenel and Farren to go look over the map that was suppose to lead them to the sword.

The stone tablet with the map on it was sitting atop a sturdy wooden desk. Kenel’s personal study was an interesting place indeed. A table sat in the middle of a rather small room. The wall opposite to the door was just one huge window. To the left and right the walls were lined with over stocked bookshelves. Osiris stepped past the table to look out the window. Outside was a huge sea of lava. The entire mansion sat on a cliff just a few hundred feet away from end of the continent. “Your father is right. I do like the view.”

“Yeah that’s why I enjoy working in here. Anyway, if my translations and calculations are right, the sword should be somewhere inside the volcano in sector one F. Should take us about a day to get there using the speeder I had outfitted for this little expedition. It may be a bit cramped if you intend to bring Farren along with.”

“Don’t worry about that. He can change his size at will.” As if to prove his point Farren started to glow and in turn grow so that he was tall enough to see the tablet on the table.

“Umm, that’s interesting. As I was saying, all the supplies we need for the trip are already in the speeder. The thing that concerns me is the spirit that is supposed to be protecting the sword. I don’t know if it is real or not. What I do know is there HAS to be something guarding the sword. Too many people have gone looking for it and never returned. I mean literally hundreds of people have gone searching for it and only half ever make their way back. The man who helped me get this tablet said it would be the death of me.”

Osiris shrugged his shoulders, “Fear isn’t going to get us anywhere. If you want to back out of this do it before we leave tomorrow. Once we leave I am going to see this thing through. Which side of the volcano do you think the entrance will be on?” For the next two hours they went over and discussed the several theories Kenel had. She seemed to cover nearly every possibility. By the end of their time in the study Osiris felt like he had several years’ worth of ancient lore and geology pounded into his head.

The morning came quickly and Osiris found himself eager to find this sword. He felt great. He had a mission, his gear fit better than it had ever before, and his sleep had passed without a visit from the strange creature embedded in his mind. Walking out of the room Osiris found Kenel in the dining hall they had eaten in the night before. Grabbing a few strips of bacon, a piece of bread, and something called an apple he kept going towards the hanger that housed the speeder. Kenel joined him without complaint for interrupting her breakfast.

Sitting in the speeder not doing anything took its toll on Osiris rapidly. Folding his legs he shut his eyes and concentrated.

Hey, wake up Farren. I want to do a little sparring with you. Up to the challenge?

The link between their minds grew and expanded into an environment much like that he experienced while using the gem. “Why not? Might as well get some practice in. The closest thing to a battle I have had in the last fifty years was our little race. If that was any indicator what this fight is going to be like. I think you are going to lose my friend.” The mental avatar of Farren laughed and bared his teeth in a smile.

Really, you couldn’t have come up with anywhere better to spar than Rage Fire Mountain. You’re not exactly very imaginative. Still, it works. By the way I was holding back!

Energy coursed through Osiris’ mental avatar as he charged Farren’s hulking figure. A blast punch held to the side of each hip he was prepared to beat his fury to a bloody pulp. Before he could reach his opponent a jet of purple flame came flying out to greet him. Osiris hopped in the air slightly and then

“Going to have to do better than that! Farren was already air born when Osiris came over the boulder. A huge claw struck the cloaked figure in the shoulder sending him hurtling to the ground. Hitting the ground he rolled several times before coming to his feet and launching himself back into the air. The exertion pushed him so fast that he was nearly invisible for a few moments. Osiris slammed a fist into Farren’s side before he had the chance to land.

The beast hit the ground with such force he bounced. Osiris tucked himself into a ball and began tumbling forward through the air. Reaching his sparring partner’s location the half demon stomped down with both feet. Farren rolled out of the way leaving Osiris crashing into the ground like a meteor. The fiery creature lunged at his rival clamping down over his entire shoulder. Fangs pierced into fleshed and cracked bone.

Osiris screamed in anguish. The pain was astonishing and for a second he almost blacked out. With desperation he threw a Blast Punch uppercut into Farren’s throat. He could feel muscle and caralige give way before the power of his blow. The large beast released his grip and dropped to the ground unable to breath.

Farren snapped out of his meditation with a growl that startled Kenel. “You got lucky with that shot. If that was a real fight we would have both been dead. There was no way you would have survived that kind of blood lose.”

Don’t be a sore loser Farren. You will have plenty of chances to beat me another time. Funny you’re the only person I would say is my close friend and I have only know you for two days. Nothing in my life ever seems to be “normal”.

Reaching down Osiris emerged his hand in Farren’s burning mane. “You are not normal Osiris and you never will be. We may have only been together for two days, but we are linked to each others mind. That is something most sentient beings will never understand. Still, that match didn’t last very long. Want to go again?

Kenel stared at them having put the plane on auto pilot. “Hey, what are you two doing? It’s kind of creepy how you two keep glowing. Makes me nervous and Farren’s growling isn’t helping.”

“Farren and I were just doing some meditation sparring. It’s no big deal really. Are we almost there?”

“Kind of, it will be about another two hours. Here, you want to play a game?” Kenel clicked a button and small column came out of the floor between their seats. A two foot by two foot hologram projected out of a glowing grid. “So, what kind of a game do you enjoy playing?”Osiris stared blankly at her for a silent moment. “Oh, right, how bout I teach you how to play chess. My dad showed it to me after one of his trips to Earth. He says it helps you to learn to think ahead and predict what your competition will do next.”

Osiris nodded his head and for the next two hours Kenel taught Osiris how the pieces moved and different strategies to use. By the third game Osiris was consistently beating her. It wasn’t exactly a fair match up though. With Farren there it was really two minds against one. If anything the game became less an exercise in strategy and more an exercise in team work. By the seventh game Kenel’s frustration was beginning to show. “You’re trying to pull a fast one on me aren’t you? You HAVE played this game before!” Farren grumbled a laugh, “Oh, I see how it is. I have been playing against the both of you! Cheaters!”

“Sorry, I’ve never been one for a fair fight. The more I can stack the odds in my favor the better. It’s just good strategy right, and this is a game of strategy? Besides you never said this was a one on one match anyway,” Osiris voice was very to the point and factual.

Loud beeping emanated from the control panel along with several flashing lights. “Well, looks like we are almost here. You can see the volcano up there. It isn’t as active as most of the others around Cauldron, but every once in a while she still gives off a little hot air. I’ll swing the ship around to the north-east side. That should be where the entrance is.”

“Wow, I didn’t really think the entrance would be that blatantly obvious. Look you can see it right there.” Osiris pointed out the window towards the base of the volcano. There was a twenty foot high arch made out of carved stone. “Something like that must have been found hundreds of time by now. Even if it was booby trapped they would have been spent and used up by now. Maybe there really is something guarding that sword or at least that place in general.”

“We should go in there tonight! We still got an hour or two of daylight. Besides I’m not even tired! Not like we have done anything today. What do you say?” She looked at him eagerly as she landed the plane roughly a hundred feet away from the entrance.

“No, not tonight Kenel. We should wait until tomorrow morning when we are all fresh. It has less to do with day or night and more to do with how prepared we are. Rushing in there tonight would be folly. After a good night’s sleep our senses will be sharper. Try to be patient.”

Kenel turned her head away without saying anything. Once they landed the ship was swiftly returned to its capsule and in return a small hut was produced from another. It still bothered Osiris to be inside something that could, at any moment, be compressed down into a device only an inch or so long. The thought of being locked away inside a capsule made him claustrophobic. Instead of staying in the cool building he sat in front of the cavern staring into the dark tunnel.

I don’t like how this place feels gives me the creeps. Still, I feel eager to go see what is in this place. May left hand feels empty for some reason. Of course, so does my stomach. Let’s go eat Farren.

Walking through the door into the hut Osiris saw Kenel was already eating. Another plate was sitting on the table waiting for him. The meal passed in silence as the Keliouxian woman was still clearly upset about having to wait for the exploration. Clearly being told no was not something she was accustomed to. As soon as Kenel was done eating she went to bed completely ignoring Osiris.

Well this is a lot less annoying than being nagged and complained at. Still, I hope she is feeling less moody tomorrow. These kinds of distractions could get us killed. Either way, the morning should be interesting.

“Osiris wake up! Wake up damn it! Get up, you lazy kid! Kenel took off into the mountain by herself!” Farren was standing next to Osiris’ bed poking him in the head with his snout.

Osiris bolted upright throwing off the covers. “Shit! How am I supposed to do my job when she goes running off by herself!” Quickly pulling on his boots and gauntlets the two of them sprinted out of the hut. Farren’s burning purple mane lit the way as they ran down the tunnel. At the speed they were going it was only a few minutes before they covered the mile and a half to the heart of the volcano. “Amazing this whole tunnel does nothing but run in a straight line. Look up ahead. Finally, that must be the end of tunnel. Something has to be there, otherwise any moron could walk in here and take the sword. Kenel better not be dead already!’

Passing through the archway at the end of the tunnel brought the two into a large natural cavern. To the right was a building made from carved stone. The structure was nearly as huge as Henex’s mansion. To the left was a stone bridge that leads to a small island in the lake of lava that filled the greater portion of the cavern. Directly in front of the tunnel was a large open field riddled with old bones. No more than ten feet away Kenel stood shaking with fear.

A dark figure wearing intricate armor and a cloak that withered and moved as though it was alive stood a couple feet away from Kenel. A dark miasma oozed from the being like a foul stench. Holding out a withered and knurled hand the thing spoke or rather hissed at them. “You come to take my blade! How dare you try to steal my lifessss work! All of you will fall under my hammerssss might!”

Osiris rushed forward leaving a blurry trail behind him. Grabbing Kenel he pulled her back and rushed back to the entrance of the cavern. As he did this a hammer blow came down shattering the ground beneath its crushing force. “Damn that was close. Farren keep her safe while I deal with this freak. If it looks like things are going to go badly for me, just get out of here. Got it?”

“No, you should let me fight with you. Together we could take this wraith easy. Didn’t you say you liked stacking the deck in your favor?”

“Yes, but we aren’t playing to beat this freak. We are playing to keep Kenel safe. Trust me, if things get out of hand, I will make a break for it too.” Osiris turned and walked towards the wraith while taking off his own cloak. Stopping about seven feet away he started to stretch out his legs and arms. Starring at his new enemy it was plain to see and unfortunately smell that he was not among the living in the ordinary sense.

The wraith widened its stance, “I’ve lost track of how many fools like you have tried to defeat me. You are by far the youngest to parish under the weight of my hammer. Hope you put up a better fight than the last few did!”

Jumping forward the menacing thing swiped upwards with its blackened hammer towards Osiris’ chin. Diving out of the way the half breed hit the ground and spun sweeping his enemies feet out from under him. Tumbling forward Osiris planted both of his feet into the monster’s chest and pushed off launching himself into the air. Diving back down he threw a vicious Blast Punch in an attempt to crush his opponent’s chest. A blackened hammer rose to meet his right fist.

Using the hammer to shift Osiris’ body away the wraith used his other knurled claw like had to swat him away. Springing to its feet the creature then charged him again with its hammer held high. “I will crush you like all those who preceded you!”

Getting to his feet Osiris tried to leap out of the way, but the creature’s cloak reached out and grabbed his legs. With no way to move in time he reached out and grabbed the hilt of his opponent’s hammer. The weight from the blow pushed him down so hard the ground beneath his feet cracked and splintered. As his elbows started to shake and threaten to give way Osiris reached deep inside himself and drudged up his latent power. With a great heave he picked up the wraith and threw him several feet.

“Osiris take this before I go! I bought it just in case something like this would happen!” Kenel pulled a capsule from her belt clicked it and threw it into the air towards. At its mid point in the air the capsule erupted into its new from. A sword was now hurtling towards Osiris.

Running towards the blade with the wraith on his heel he barely managed to grab the hilt. “Who the hell throws a SOWRD at people!? And you PLANNED on something like this actually happening?! What is wrong with you?!” Catching the blade Osiris spun and deflected a hammer blow coming towards his head. “I don’t even know how to use this thing! Would have been nice if you mentioned a sword fight before all this started!”

“Enough of this childissssh non-ssssense! I will kill all of you, ssssword or not!” The wraith raised a hand towards the tunnel and an unseen stone block dropped from the ceiling. There was no going back now. The creature attacked again swinging the heavy hammer around tirelessly.

Farren came running over to join the fray. “Get back to Kenel! We don’t know if there are more of these things! leaping back leaving a few feet between Osiris and the wraith a jet of flame burst forward and swallowed the wraith. Osiris turned to look at Farren who nodded his head and returned to stand in front of Kenel.

The wraith burst from the flames not at Osiris but towards the others. Running to catch up Osiris slashed his sword across the back of the wraith’s legs. As the thing dropped to its knees he plunged the Capsule Corp Sword through its back and out its chest. Before Osiris could even get the blade all the way out the wraith jumped up and attacked. The hammer flew towards his ribcage. There was no stopping the blow, he could only slow it down.

Backpedaling like mad Osiris could feel the three shattered ribs with each breath. It took all of his meager swordsmanship to defend himself. Still he lost ground and soon he was standing on the bridge that leads out over the burning lake. His arms were dead tired from the constant blows he had to knock away. The rest of his body was bruised everywhere having taken glancing shots and several kicks and punches. Osiris was nearly at his limit.

The monstrous figure showed no sign of tiring. Osiris smiled feeling the odd sensation run through his body. A warm tingling swirled through his skin and then it was like he was standing outside his own body.

I’m going to die. More than that Kenel is going to die. She won’t come back like me and Farren. This isn’t right. It’s my job to protect her! How am I supposed to kill this thing though? No matter where I cut it, the damn thing gets back up.

Osiris looked out over the fiery orange lake and decided. One way or another that wraith is going in, even if he had to drag it in himself. Osiris’ eyes widened when he looked back and saw a claw like hand shoot out and wrap around his neck. The wraith raised its weapon for the final blow.

With desperation bring him back into his body Osiris brought the sword up slicing through the arm latched to his throat. Black blood sprayed his face as he jumped back away from the descending hammer. Pulling the hand off his throat he tossed it out into the lava. A new arm suddenly erupted from the stump. The withering cloak then wrapped back around the new arm recreating its sleeve. Osiris shook his head and ran out to the island. The square stone platform had nor railings to get in the way. An anvil in the middle was unfortunately going to be an obstacle.

Reaching the island Osiris spun hard hoping to catch the wraith unguarded. The damage wouldn’t kill it, but maybe it would stun it enough to push it into the lava. His plan backfired though; his sword met a hammer swing knocking the blade out of its hand. The Capsule Corp Sword skittered across the stone coming to stop just before going of the platform. Another hammer blow came down and Osiris tried to defend himself with a Blast Punch. He managed to deflect the strike just enough to avoid being hit, but he still screamed out in pain. Hitting the metal object so hard mangled his right hand.

Osiris had turned and leaned against the anvil to stop from completely falling over. There lying along the length of the anvil was a sword still glowing white hot from the forge. The blade was much bigger than the one he had just be wielding. Beads of sweat dropped from his face onto the glowing metal. They made a slight popping nose and instantly turned to steam before even hitting the metal itself.

“DIE!” Instinct took over and Osiris grabbed the unfurnished hilt feeling the metal burn into his skin. He brought the blade awkwardly up to block the hammer with its flat side. Osiris knew he was about to die. The stupid mistake was obvious even to him. Amazingly the hammer struck and then bounced back as if it hit a solid surface. The blade rang and resonated with power that shot through Osiris’ whole being. With a roar he shoved the sword through the burning blade into the wraith’s chest where its heart should have been.

Light burst from beneath the cloak white hot like the blade’s metal. A voice boomed out from the wraith, but it had lost the entire hiss it once held. There was a note of nobility in the new voice, “Finally I have finished my greatest work. Young one you have saved me from my curse. Now I can finish this sword properly for the one who truly deserves to wield it! Not only as a blade of great power but as the resting place for my soul.”

With a great sigh the figure seemed to turn into a torch of pure light. Osiris shielded his face with his crippled hand, unable to let go of the sword with his left hand. Again the blade surged energy into his body for several minutes before the light started to fade. Once again able to look down at the blade he could see a sheath made of black leather. The hilt hand a new wire grip that felt natural in Osiris’ hand and the pommel was a large diamond that glowed faintly.

Osiris pulled the strap of the sheath over his head resting the sword across his back. Walking over he picked up the Capsule Corp Sword and began using it as a cane. Dark shadows began pouring out f the stone structure on the opposite side of the cavern. Farren came running over to the end of the bridge where Osiris was struggling to make his way back to the tunnel. The mountain began to shake and fall apart. Osiris dropped to his knees unable to walk anymore.

“You have to get up Osiris! Those shades are ripping this whole place apart! Kenel he is about to black out! You will have to pick him up!” Kenel looked shocked for a moment clearly surprised that the best had spoken into her mind. Snapping herself out of her stupor she jumped down and lugged Osiris up onto Farren’s back.

Farren ran over to the tunnel hoping that the slab blocking the way would have lifted once the wraith was defeated. It seemed all was lost as he came sliding to a halt in front of the blocked exit. Kenel was the first to speak up over the crashing of boulders that fell from the roof of the cavern. “What are we suppose to do now?”

Rousing just enough to speak a few words Osiris spoke, “Get closer.” It was barely a whisper but Farren could hear him with his mind. Walking closer the diamond pommel began to shine brightly and gave out a single piercing note. As if listening to a command the rock slab retraced just enough to let the three through and then slammed back down.

A few minutes later the trio was out of the rumbling mountain just in time to watch it erupt. Lava spewed from down the sides, great plumes of black ash rose into the sky, and small flaming rocks started to fall from the sky. Kenel jumped down and run into the hut grabbing a packet full of capsules. Within seconds the hut was downsized and placed back into the packet. Next the speeder they had come in was produced and they were racing back home.

The last thing Osiris remembered seeing was the flaming rocks streaking through the night sky and the sound of impacts on the ship’s hull. When he woke up next he was floating in an odd liquid almost completely naked save for a pair of boxers. A mask on his face fed him a constant stream of oxygen. Looking down at himself there were no wounds to be found. Even his right hand seemed completely repaired. His attention turned to the burn mark that surely must have left a nasty scar on his hand.

What the Hell!

Silver marking ran along his hand and forearm in geometrical pasterns. They shimmered like metal in the like but felt like normal skin to the touch. They were completely opposite to the dark natural runes on his right arm. These new markings looked like they had been put in place with exact precision and were never meant to move like his older ones. Osiris looked out the glass door in front of him to see Kenel, Henex, Farren, and several servants standing in the room looking at him. He pointed to the silver runes on his left arm and kenel just shrugged.

Like I didn’t look enough like a freak before.

The bluish liquid started drain away and the mask disengaged moving back to its standby position. The glass door opened and several people helped Osiris climb out of the tank. After the servants brought him a towel and his things they left the room. Henex was the one to break the silence, “Well you did it again. You saved my daughter at the expense of your own safety. Kenel has already made a highly detailed holographic version of the sword. So, I want you to keep it. She seems to think it will do you the most good. Funny thing is. I was planning on giving you this Rejuvenation Tank as a bonus for a safe return. Seeing as you are already getting the sword though, I figured I could just offer you the family discount on it.” Henex flashed him the smile of a business man.

“Dad don’t be rude! I’m back safe so why should you change what you were going to do?” Kenel put her hands on her hips and glared at her father.

Osiris waved a hand, “No, I actually prefer it this way. I don’t like getting free handouts, been trying to get my hands on one anyway. How much do you want for it?” Osiris stood to finish putting his pants on.

“I like your style kid. How does 460 sound to you?” Osiris nodded his head and Henex threw an arm him with a chuckle, “You are a man of few words Osiris, but you got class son.”

Kenel crossed her arms with a huff, “Fine, but you are taking that Capsule Corp Sword whether you like it or not. It’s always a good idea to keep a spare on you! Now where are you staying tonight?” Osiris shrugged his shoulders remembering the argument that had driven him from Iron Mountain. Then it is already settled. You are going to stay here for the rest of the week! No arguing!” With that Kenel turned and stomped out of the room dragging her father with her.

Osiris turned to Farren, “Hey how long have I been out? The last thing I remember was the volcano erupting.”

Farren rumbled with a mighty laugh, “You have been asleep in that tank for three days now Osiris.”

“That is a lot of training to make up for.” He sighed as Farren continued to laugh at him.
