Custom Character History: Planet Tythes is a harsh world, flooded with seas that steam and boil because of the constant volcanic activity that takes place deep within the mantle. The scraps of land to be found on the surface of this watery world are scarred from the constant eruptions of volcanic mountains, which are accompanied by tremendous earthquakes. Those lands spared from these magma floes are marked with winding faults and spewing geysers. On this hostile world dwells an unusual race of intelligent amphibians called “salamanders.” In response to their hot and stormy home, the salamanders became cold and calculating. Having evolved from primitive amphibians, these beings are well-suited to living at the edge of warm freshwater sources, most often underground aquifers. Adapted to living in the dark, they are a nocturnal race, which allows them avoid the increased heat of the day as much as possible when venturing around the surface of the home world. Possessing great reserves of stamina, they are naturally gifted with utilizing ki blasts. In fact, nearly all adult salamanders use the fire breath technique to defend themselves when away from the water. Salamanders are not strictly militaristic, but they are fiercely territorial. While few races have been eager to invade the hostile planet Tythes, the natives have kept themselves busy with warfare all the same, as they clashed against one another. Inhabiting such a harsh world reaffirmed the principles of survival of the fittest amongst the salamanders, as they competed for limited resources. Status amongst salamanders has always and still is determined by power, and so nearly all salamanders crave power simply to ensure their survival, though most of them also crave the respect it garners as well. The salamanders have grimly accepted that they will not forever be spared an invasion. Since they are not unified, the salamanders are in no position to repel such an assault, yet those salamanders with authority refuse to yield any of their power. Many lesser salamanders have become disillusioned and have fled the planet in order to pursue their own interest amongst the stars, seeing no more reason to side with those who have demeaned them over those who pay. Karaurus was another face in the crowd on Tythes, subject to the authority of more powerful salamanders. As a middle-class member of society, he was able to secure a position as a personal bodyguard to an abusive noble. After several months of service, Karaurus rebelled and lashed out against his ward. Realizing the punishment that awaited him, Karaurus hastily fled, only delaying a moment in order to steal enough to aid him in escaping Tythes. The salamander made his way to the Kelioux Empire and has since joined the academy. He has also found work as body guard thanks to his former training. Sample: A 573 word excerpt from a 716 word post taken from this RP. At length, the group came upon the crest of a hill. The hawk circled above them once and then broke away, landing upon the branch of a tree in small grove down the slope. It gave a cry and then disappeared into the shady bowels of the dark grove. The wizard thought the place had a foreboding appearance, but their scout had chosen the path too long ago for them to abandon it now. He drew out his sword and took Amaya by the wrist. The trees grew tight here, and the corridor the group used to enter the little cluster of trees was narrow, forcing everyone closer together. There was a subtle magic at work in that little grove; leaves seem to bend to block out the light, and the ground became boggy in places. Nato led the group, followed by Turquan and Amaya. Aleric came next, aided by his most trusted knight. The others straggled behind, gradually being outpaced by the others. For Nato, the way was easy with firm footing, but for the knights the ground was wet, and their heavy armor mired them. Truly, the trees conspired against them, raising their roots and twisting their branches. All at once, a fold came upon the forest, and a green curtain, which separated the two parties, covered the corridor. It could have been magic that clouded their senses, though in Aleric’s case such a thing would have been mild in comparison to the effect of the poison. His mind was slipping, and his body was weary and covered in sweat. The strain of the journey had taken its toll, and for sure Aleric would have already died had it not been for a measure of constitution and steel nerves. At any rate, none of them became aware they were becoming separated from the others until it was too late. Cries came out from the lost knights. Some of them were stable, but it was obvious a panic was overtaking some of them. The fear of foul magic was not something battle often steeled one against. Immediately, the forest came alive. Coiled vines lashed out like snakes, as the branches shook and roots twisted. It was disorienting all at once. One vine struck Turquan upon his hand, causing him to reflexively release his grip on Amaya, while a branch reached for his sword and seized it. Turquan glanced around in that instant. Nato found himself in the position of being worked into a cage, vines reaching down to the upturned roots, and branches forming a prison. The effects over Aleric were lesser, and in fact he was spared all but lashing across his ankles, though he and his ally would also find themselves robbed of their weapons. Meanwhile, both arms and legs had seized Amaya tightly, though not painfully. The vines that held her reeled her up to just below the canopy, dangling her off the ground. Turquan hands took an amber glow as he prepared to save the Lady. Firing off a spell meant to sever the vines that bond her. However, the sparks of magic dissipated shortly after leaving his fingers, becoming like a glittering dust in the air. Turquan was stunned, never having seen such a thing. Manifesting in the shadow of the little clearing that seemed to spring forth in the grove, a figure cloaked in darkness began with a deep hearty laugh. |
