A thick layer of toxic smoke had accumulated over the northern continent of Cauldron, feed by black columns trailing up from the inhospitable landscape. Somewhat concealed by this murky cloud, the faint gleam of metal peeked through this obscuring obstacle in places, giving the faint impression of the spacecraft lurking there. The alien vessel quietly hovered in place, remaining motionless for an extended period of time.

Inside the craft, an amphibious being stood over the terminal, working the buttons at the console in a deliberate manner. Several monitors displayed images pertinent to the alien’s business on the northern continent. One of the screens displayed a crude map of the region below, produced and refined periodically by rebounding sound waves emitted and perceived by the complex systems of the spaceship. Another screen displayed a sample of what had brought the salamander to the region, crystal ash.

The art of mysticism ran strong through the salamander culture of the distant, stormy would Tythes, and Karaurus was no exception. While traveling across planet Cauldron, he’d heard whispered tales of a mad medicine woman, and he’d found it too difficult to resist the lure of visiting the sage. It had been no easy task reaching the hovel she called home, which was located amongst part of a rugged of the world. Upon actually meeting the medicine woman, he’d not found her madness disconcerting in the least, and indeed had quickly grown to respect her crazed insight.

During their meeting, she’s agreed to concoct an elixir for the salamander. Unfortunately, she lacked an important and rare ingredient, crystal ash, which was only produced in the raging lava pools of the northern continent. Even amongst the dreadful planet Cauldron, the northern continent was a particularly hostile place. The level of toxic particles in the air was considerably higher, information Karaurus could gauge from one of his monitors. Furthermore, the locales claimed the region was also home to ferocious beasts called “fire elementals,” which was said to be pure manifestations of flame given rise to from the bubbling pools of magma that dotted the surface of the northern lands.

With his calculations complete, Karaurus was satisfied to set out on his journey. However, before he did so he took a moment to equip himself for the task. From his armory, he choose to take his runic blaster, which he clasped over the wiry left arm, and his power pole, which he sheathed at a slant across his back. He also picked up a scouter and carried it over to the ship’s terminal, plugging it into the board with a cable and promptly downloading all pertinent information. Then, the salamander clasped the eyepiece over his left eye and activated it with the press of a button.

Before setting out, he equipped himself with one last device. It was a simple, lightweight breathing apparatus that would help to filter out a great many of the pollutants floating around in the air outside. Truthfully, his alien physiology was not so poorly adapted to this sort of environment that he could not survive without it, but he would certainly be a far sight more comfortable if he employed the device. Thus, he fit the specially adapted mask of his broad, flat face and tested to see if it was working properly.

When it seemed that everything was in working order, Karaurus was finally ready to set out about the task of recovering a sample of crystal ash. He walked over to the portal to the outside world, with the sound of his boots marking his trail across the floor of the ship. With the press of a button, the door retracted, revealing the outside world of toxic clouds with a rush of dry air. The alien pressed another combination of buttons, arming the ships security defenses; he’d already learned that some of the locals were little better than thieves, and he was wary to take chances even in such an inhospitable place.

Without further hesitation, the salamander slowly lifted off of the platform and flew out into the blanket of smoke and smog, with the door slamming shut behind him. He easing his way down to the ground, and it was not long before he felt the firm touch of stone beneath his boots. Cautiously, he peered around to take in his surroundings, although his vision was obscured to a minor degree due to the rising smoke so he was forced to rely on assistance from is scouter.

It did not take long for the salamander to orient himself, and once his scouter provided him with a prediction as to which direction was likely to yield crystal ash the quickest, Karaurus was off on his way. The alien traveled in a bounding motion, making short flights between stable landing points. The land around him was mostly black stone, with craggy ridges in some places and smooth faces in others. The monotony of the landscape was broken apart by cracks in the stone, which often produced wisps of smoke from below, and by lava pools, which bubbled with activity and provided the sound save for the wind.

Karaurus had not traveled too far when he came to rest upon a ridge overlooking a particularly large pool of magma. Slowly tracing his vision over the contours of the pool, he checked the bubbling area with his scanner, searching for proper mineral content. Unfortunately, the results were negative, leaving him to turn his gaze back towards the horizon in search of the next lava pool. As he did, he turned to survey the landscape, and his boot met with a stone, sending it tumbling away over the edge and down into the pool. Along its way, the stone dislodged several other loose bits of mineral, and they heedlessly followed into the lava.

The event would have hardly warranted any concern if it were not for the fact that immediately afterwards Karaurus’s scouter begin registering a report of a different sort, a power level reading. It was a substantial one as well, comparable to his own.

Thus, as he turned back the salamander was not surprised to find the pool than had merely been bubbling before was now disturbed by dramatic ripples, adding to the general chaos of the surface of the pocket of magma.

However, Karaurus’s nerves remained steeled as he watched the activity. He thought he knew well enough what the source of this disturbance was, and he was not without a plan for confronting the obstacle. Instead, the alien calmly waited to see just what would develop.

The salamander was not left to wait long. The disruptions of the surface of the lava pool intensified, and then the surface was broken in an eruption. A mighty beast tore out into the open, appearing like a worm composed of pure flame and melted earth with ill-defined features visible only as different hues of color. In a flash, the elemental rose like a geyser until it towered over the alien still resting upon the nearby ridge. Then, it leaned forward, imposing over the lithe salamander and dribbling bits of lava around him.

Still possessing a cool demeanor, Karaurus was glad to find himself prepared. With sharp reflexes, he quickly worked into a wide stance, the salamander slowly drew in a deep breath while gradually clenching his three-fingered fists across his torso and each other. As he did so, his energy began to simmer, a shift that could be felt easier than it could be detected with the eye although the accumulation of power caused bits of debris, such as pebbles and ash, to resist the forces of gravity and to gather about him. As he did so, his flesh began to quiver, as if he was exerting a great effort, and his voice began in a low, soft rumble that steadily increased in volume and intensity. Then, his power level spiked and a aura of brilliant orange encompassed his form.

The elemental recoiled slightly when confronted with this, as it seemed the beast was able to perceive this shift in some manner. However, it released a thunderous roar in response, signaling that it was not yet dissuaded from falling upon its prey.

However, Karaurus was not done yet either. Still holding his clenched fists out to his side, he then thrust them upwards sharply while simultaneously flattening his palms. As he did so, he controlled his breath and focused Ki, and a trace of flames burst forth across his physical form as a result. These flames then suddenly flared, consuming all of his body. Meanwhile, his aura also grew to encompass this flaming ward and changed in color to a bright blue color. As the salamander stood motionless, the aura and the flames within it danced about chaotically.

The fire elemental turned what could be best described as its head in a manner suggesting curiosity and let out a low growl that carried a similar tone about it. In order to further convince the beast, Karaurus took in a deep breath and released a tongue of flame from his mouth. The creature was soothed by the radiating heat and gradually began to withdraw back into the magma pool from whence it came. Karaurus remained ever motionless during this proceeding, until after the elemental had retreated and the ripples had calmed by to a modest bubbling activity.

With the situation defused, the salamander was free to go back about his business of tracking down these crystal ashes. However, he did not relax his power level or dismiss the flames crackling across his body. Since he ploy had worked once, there was not reason to doubt it would do so again, and avoiding further disturbances would perhaps speed up the process. At any rate, by expending a small measure of Ki, he could at least search quicker.

Thus, his flaming form finally bounded away from the ridge where he had been resting. With a burst of power, he caught himself and flight and took off over the rugged terrain. His scouter continued doing its work, registering several different types of mineral deposits as well as the power levels of a few nearby fire elementals.

After passing by several pools with no luck, his scouter suddenly chirped with a positive identification, displaying directions and distances to the discovery. He took off in such haste that the shockwave disrupted resting ash and aimless smoke. In no great amount of time, he’d come to the location, landing besides a small pool of lava. It was a calm pool with only the slightest amount of detectable activity, yet the entirety of its perimeter was encrusted with sparkling crystals.

For a moment, the salamander leaned upon his staff and inspected the pool, checking the data present in his eyepiece’s display. Then, at last, he picked up the end of the staff and drove it into the crystalline crust, crumbling a bit of the crust and cracking a larger piece. With a barrier of flames manifested around his hand, the alien reached down towards the magma, which recoiled at the approach of his power. Thus, the was able to easily grasp the crystal and break off a large chunk along the fault.
