Nearing the end of the year, winter was in full swing. Snow blowing, but not quite touching the ground in the early evening twilight. King Cold had spent the better part of the last 2 weeks trying to figure out his transformation. He had met with little success. Unable to break past what he was beginning to feel was a brick wall in his training, he knew that he was missing something. Kick. The foot flashed forward, connecting squarely with the other man's thigh, buckling his legs momentarily, despite the fact that the effort put forth for the kick, was minimal at best. Punch. The bare fist shot forward and back faster than the armored figure could even see. The Pain was so bright his mind was reeling unable to process what had just occured. Elbow. As he was bent over, Rekk felt a sharp pain between his shoulderblades, dropping him fully to one knee. Knee. King Cold's knee smashed into the faceshield on the helmet of his underling. Rekk fell backwards, barely able to move. Looking down at his hands and chest, King Cold was forced to realize that this was easily the fifth or sixth day in a row that he had not broken a sweat while utterly destroying his only available sparring partner, Rekk. The Training was going poorly. Feeling as if he was failing not only himself, but also his people, King Cold refused to believe that he had plateau'd. "Get up you miserable wretch. Go home and recover, you are useless to me right now." Slowly, Rekk managed to pull himself up from the ground, blood staining his clothing and armor. As the beaten man limped off into the woods, King Cold roared, "I must learn how to transform. My own children are even able to do this. I will not be surpassed like this!" Reflecting on the words the mysterious cloaked man had told him before he left Master Frost's home, "You must use your emotions. When the time is right, the power will come to you." Frustrated, King Cold lifted off into the air, and made for his camp, muttering under his breath. His training ground was only a minutes flight from his campsite, and he was enjoying the deep purples and red of the setting sun. The colors reminding him of blood, put a small smile on his face. Briefly taking his mind off the problem at hand, but only briefly. "My ancestors were forced to transform their bodies into less powerful forms in order to reduce their powers to safe levels. Why can I not transform back as easily!" Landing in his camp site, the small form of the Changeling King began to shake with rage as he felt powerless. Pacing around the fire, trying to clear his mind and calm his growing rage, until a small voice startled him. "My King, There are many ways learn the transformations." King Cold jerked his head towards the sound of the voice, looking around cautiously, the Frozen Valley was one of the more dangerous valley's in the Iceshard Mountains, and the bandits and other creatures that lived in these parts were not to be trifled with. For this reason, even a man such as King Cold must be wary and on his toes, "Who goes there? Show yourself or I will destroy you!" The other mans laugh sent chills up King Cold's spine, a quiet chuckle, a sound that a small child might make. This chuckle slowly built, becoming a full blown laugh, deep and hearty. Finally, increasing in pitch and growing shrill, the laughter became a cackling, maniacal laughter. The type of laughter that one would expect from a twisted and demented madman, "Foolish King. You cannot even Transform, and you expect to destroy me?" The figure of this voice, a shadowy shapeless figure stepped forward, into the dim shadows around the edges of the campsite, staying warily outside of the light cast by the meager, nearly dying fire in the campsite that King Cold was calling home for the next week. "I don't need to transform to destroy you!" Shaking his head the figure stepped out of the shadowy outskirts and into the actual light, well over 7 feet tall, this man was obviously able to transform himself into the second form at a minimum, a fact that did not escape King Cold's notice, nor did it give him pause, outwardly at least. "My King, I am not here to harm you. I have been observing your training. If I do say so myself, you have plateau'd and are ready for the next step of your training. I can teach you." King Cold relaxed, but only slightly, as he assessed the man who now stood only a few feet away from him, "I have received training on this matter, but it does not work." The man released the cloak he wore, the cold of the valley and the mountains around them, apparently did not affect him all that much, "My King, there is more than one way to flay a beast." King Cold nodded at the man, waving his hand, as if to say, 'Get on with it'. "My name is Blaze, I have trained many changelings in the ways of the transformation." King Cold sneered, the corners of his mouth wrinkling in that characteristic way that only he could do. "You think I need your help? I will make due on my own. The King does not need the help of the likes of you." Blaze shook his head, "Your arrogance will be your downfall one day My King, but today, I will teach you the first step in unlocking your true powers." That was when he lashed out, attacking King Cold. Several rapid physical attacks, delivered with such force that King Cold could feel the bruises already beginning to form moments after the other man made contact. However as fast as the attacks came, they were already over, and the mysterious Changeling returned to where he had stood, face stoic as ever. Spitting blood on the ground, "Your life, is forfeit. I will revel in watching you tortured for weeks until you beg me for the sweet release of death." "My King, I am the last scion of a long shamed Clan of our people. I bear you no ill will, but you must be in the right frame of mind in order to unlock this transformation the first time. You have tried other methods and met with only failure, now, you will try my way." King Cold glared at the man, "I have been unable to attain the requisite power to transform." "Ahh, The fatal mistake. As I just said, a state of mind is the primary requirement." "Show me!" Blaze smiled, "The first time you achieve this transformation, must be done out of dire need. The more dire your situation, the easier you find this comes. Being outmatched, is the most logical way to achieve this need." That was when the second attack came. Fists, Knees, head butts, they all came with blinding speed. King Cold could not even muster a defense beyond raising his arms to shield his face. For several long, painful seconds, Blaze beat King Cold senseless. When he finally backed off, he was covered in blood smears and spray. King Cold lay on the ground, barely moving, but moving none the less. Groaning, he slowly rolled onto his stomach, spitting blood the entire way. Pushing himself up on all fours he tested his arms and legs, finding them weak, but unbroken, he carefully made his way onto his feet. As King Cold begins to rise to his feet, Blaze watches with earnest, "Now, My King, do you understand just how outmatched you truly are?" King Cold turned, fixing Blaze with his cold, dead eyes, and spat a mouthful of blood at his impromptu teachers feet, "Forget the sweet release of death, If this doesn't work, I will torture you from this life, and into the next." Blaze shook his head, "You can doubt my methods, My King, but do not doubt my results. You will see." King Cold pursed his lips, and continued his glare, feeling the heat from the fire wash over his left side, in the back of his head he could not wait until he was able to return to the large tent and the sleeping mat within. His body was in serious need of rest. As he looked sideways toward his tent, he realized one thing. This would at least help him more than his sparring with Rekk. "My King, you must power up to your maximum", thumping his chest, "You must center yourself, feel your power here." King Cold took a meager step away from the fire, closer to this strange man, "You said, that It wasn't about power." Blaze nodded, "Indeed. Being as close to your full power as you can be while still meeting the dire need clause, makes this easier to do though," pausing, "Now, Once you center yourself, you must visualize the change. See your new form in your mind's eye, this is the most important aspect of this transformation. As you visualize your new form, expand your power, and discharge your energy into your body, allowing it to augment your own natural body." King Cold closed his eyes, and did as he was bid, visualizing himself over 10 feet tall, his horns dramatically larger, feeling the blood coursing through his veins, the ebb and flow of his natural energies, he redirected those energies, to a central focal point within himself, concentrating on merging the mind and the body. He was suddenly able to feel the ebb and flow of energies around him, in the air, the eddies of the fire only a few feet away from him. Drawing on the destructive energies of the wind and fire around him, in order to augment his own abilities, he then began to channel the energies that he drew into his center, back into his own cells. He felt the energy filling the gaps between cells, slowly but surely increasing his mass, and prompting the body to feed on the energy to create new mass. Suddenly, his aura, and his energy deepened. The muscles and bones beneath his skin began to shift, the tell tale signs of large lumps of flesh shifting around visibly. The pain suddenly wracked his body, his arms involuntarily thrust up and out, as his body hit the tipping point, where he lost control of the process. The Wind, previously blowing lightly, picked up as his body began to exert large amounts of heat, causing a natural wind to blow off his body, swirling clouds of dust and steam, all combined to obscure the actual transformation process, which was actually as blessing, as the appearance as the transformation occurred was something less than pleasing to the eye. As the dust cleared, Blaze nodded at King Cold, "Congratulations My King." "This power is, acceptable, but somewhat disappointing. I expected something..." "More? There are additional transformations, My King, but I would suggest that you learn to master this one before attempting the others. Walk around in it, live your life in this form as much as you can." King Cold nodded, and turned slightly towards the fire, throwing a few kicks and punches at the fire. As he turned back to Blaze, the man was gone. He had not heard the man leave, nor did he even notice the man's footprints coming or going in the snow on the ground. King Cold was forced to wonder, 'Was he ever really there?' Word Count: 1950 |
