King Cold looked at the group of changelings and aliens, 5 in all. Waiting for the transport that would take them up the coast to the northern wilds of the Province 834. Incognito, his own face, and skin disguised while he infiltrated one of the newer units that was in the initial stages of training to join the PTO Army. The rumors of coddling, and giving their army recruits what some were claiming was the "easy ride" through their training, had not sat very well with the Changeling King. After several minutes of waiting, a large transport craft approached the waiting group of recruits, and the Sergeant who had conducted their mission briefing sat behind the controls. "Mount Up, Scum bags." 'So far, so good, training doesn't seem all that easy as of yet,' King Cold thought casually. As the group mounted up, one of the recruits, a purple furred dog-like creature, slipped as he entered the passenger compartment, and another recruit, a strangely built changeling, attempted to help him up, but King Cold quietly kicked the other Changeling and pointed to the passenger compartment. Sheepishly, and recognizing the power behind the kick was not something he wanted to trifle with, the other Changeling left the dog-man alone to scamper into the compartment on his own, while holding his now bloody nose in an attempt to stop the bleeding. "It'll toughen you up," was all King Cold could say to the dog-man. As the last man's foot left the ground outside, the Sergeant took off, not waiting for anyone to find a safe place to sit, or even catch their balance, and King Cold mentally smiled, satisfied that at the very least, the Sergeant was a brutal man, deserving of the position of authority he held. --- A few hours later, the transport arrives at the drop off point, a few miles south of the 'problem area' as it was briefed to them. King Cold clearly allowing one of the other men to lead the way, after all, he did not need to learn how to lead men into battle. The 5 men spread out through the woods, a few hundred yards apart, as they began to pick their way through the underbrush, the late afternoon sun shining to their right as it neared the horizon. After nearly an hour of walking, the group found the first hints of the beasts they were send to stop. Moments after finding the first evidence, the first attack came. The dog-man was the first one to be attacked. The beast was weak, a scout for the semi-intelligent Ice Wolves, if one was to venture a guess. Despite the apparent weakness of the beast, King Cold found himself watching as the dog-man was fighting for his own life, the Wolf was getting the best of him. As the beast caught scent of the others in their group, it backed off, sparing the dog-man, and howling for the rest of its pack. The fish-eyed man, looked at the dog-man, the two changelings and the cat-lady, and shrugged, "Well, this is what we came for. Speak up when you see something," and then turned his back on the other 4 people, watching outward for the soon to be approaching pack. King Cold barely suppressed a laugh, his own power level was dramatically larger compared to the reported power level of the Alpha and Beta wolves of this pack. He was however hesitant to face a whole pack in his current form. Deciding quickly, he steeled himself, and began to transform. Ironically, the changes were minimal, primarily a near doubling of his original height, and the straight horns, that had previously stuck out from his head, at 45 degree angles, grew in length, and turned straight upward after about 7 inches. The other Changeling looked at him, face full of an emotion that King Cold could not place, but was eventually replaced with one he did, Jealousy. "Teach Me," the other changeling begged, but King Cold shrugged the request off and turned his nose up into the air. "Focus on the task moron, can't you hear them stalking through the woods right now," the transformed Changeling berated his lower class teammate. As the other man turned to look into the woods and listen, the pack fell on them in force. King Cold didn't see the first wave of wolves, just the dark colored masses that leapt out of the encroaching darkness of twilight. Flashes of red reflected in the ever decreasing sunlight, flickers of white reflected in the slowly rising light of the moon. The glowing eyes and glinting teeth came for each of the 5 beings. King Cold dispatched two snapping, snarling beasts quickly, but not before they left indications of their attack. The Cat-Lady took a bite to the neck, and was bleeding out all over the snow and ice, the other changeling had to finish off the wolves that fell on her. King Cold noted that she began to gurgle and wail, sounds he instantly recognized as death wails. Shaking his head he couldn't help but be annoyed at the money wasted training the girl. His annoyance was short lived as the next wave of beasts fell upon them. Noticeably stronger this time, he realized the wolves reputation for being semi-intelligent was well deserved. They were trying to wear down the group of invaders in their territory. It was nothing less than what King Cold would do with his armies. Send in the green, the recruits, and the mentally unstable, let them thin out the ranks as best they can. The more your lowest level troops weed out the troops, the easier time your better folks have. As the third wave of beasts fell on them, this wave was smaller, but if he had to guess, they had fighting powers of nearly 500 each. The dog-man finally fell in battle during this wave, the light purple fur on his side coated in his blood as the wolves fell on his entrails, feasting, until the 3 remaining members of the group dispatched them. This time, the wolves did not fall on them blindly, instead a ring of wolves began to coalesce out of the woods around them, there had to be nearly 2 dozen wolves surrounding the group, and the roughly 8-1 odds did not sit in their favor, regardless of how powerful King Cold was. That was when he saw it, the two wolves who paced the outside of the group, and he recognized them instantly, the Alpha and Beta. The leaders. This group of invaders had drawn the ire of the pack leaders, 'These,' King Cold thought, 'are the strongest and most powerful of all the wolves out here. This also makes them the most dangerous.' The wolves fell on King Cold's group like they hadn't eaten in weeks, hit and run style, harassing and never staying in the fray long enough to receive more than one responding attack to every 3 of their own. Eventually, the trio got some good hits in on several of the wolves, and took nearly a quarter of the attacking beasts out of the fight, but not before the fish-eyed man in their group received multiple mortal wounds and lay bleeding, slowly dieing at their feet. The Alpha and the Beta stepped forward, the wolves of the pack splitting themselves between their two leaders, falling into echelon formations. Snarling, the two beasts began to prowl around the remaining two men, both of them changelings. "My King, We are well and truly fucked," King Cold was taken by surprise, flabbergasted at the fact that this man had seen through his disguise, and knew it was him all along. The other man, intuitive as ever and sensing his King's surprise, "As one of your loyal subjects since birth, how could I not recognize you, even in that poorly designed disguise. You are one of the most distinctive members of our people." The Changeling King smirked, although the other man could not see it as the two changelings stood back to back, facing the next few minutes of their lives, not daring to plan beyond that. The Alpha Wolf came at King Cold, 4 of his pack were at his heels, the 5 beasts attacked with a purpose, with a level of coordination rarely seen in beasts. Each beast went for a separate limb, while the Alpha went for the core. Unbeknownst to King Cold, the Beta was employing the same tactic against the other changeling. However, the Changelings had a single advantage unaccounted for by the wolves, their tails. King Cold's tail lashed forward, smacking aside the wolf coming in for his left arm, the impact broke the beasts from leg, leaving it limping off into the woods. The two remaining wolves who had not joined the fray seemed hesitant to join now. King Cold's hand lashed out, grabbing the Alpha by the throat, while his tail whipped about his body as fast as it could, defending the other wolves, injuring them in their repeated attempts to attack him. King Cold and the Alpha fell to the ground tussling as the other wolves attacked while his back was turned. Ravaging his back, the purple tinted changeling blood began to flow steadily onto the snow around the fray. Before he knew it, King Cold had his hand clenched tightly around the wolves throat, summoning all of his strength, he shoved his hand down, through the wolves throat severing its windpipe and breaking its neck. Standing up while still fending off the other wolves with his tail, the wolves backed off slightly as they assessed the situation, watching as their Alpha was brutalized and killed, attempting to renew their attack on King Cold en masse, the 4 remaining wolves lept to their collective deaths as the Changeling lashed out, burning up the last reserves of his strength and energy, to stop the rampaging mob of Ice Wolves once and for all. Recovering from the savaging he had just received and dished out to the wolves. Looking around for his fellow changeling, he found the man, nursing several massive bite wounds, but the wolves lay around him various states of injury and death. The Beta's skull had been crushed, and King Cold could not help but be slightly impressed with the man's prowess, although he had suffered fewer injuries than this other changeling. In an uncharacteristic move for the Changeling King, he helped the other man to his feet, a gesture only extended in recognition of the other man's ability to hold his own in a fight that he was clearly outmatched in, a trait that any good leader must be able to recognize in his minions. "Let's Finish these beasts." The two men worked in near silence, ensuring that the injured wolves who were unable to run away, were slaughtered, while the entire horde had not been annihilated, it would be several years before this pack would be able to rebuild and threaten anyone again. |
