Training with Lord Frost afforded one some small perks, generally speaking. As one of the more interesting ones, some of his students were allowed to hang around some of Frost's off-duty palace guards, as the special tutelage generally implied that he was of high enough class to do so. So, in his spare time, between training drills, Ayakon sat around with some of the guards and listened as they chatted with each other. He offered a few spare sentences now and then, but wasn't exactly engaged in the conversation. This was more a way to find out information he wouldn't otherwise know, such as some of the inner workings of the guard and possibly the Planet Trade Organization.

So now when he wasn't training, in his quarters, or spending time at a local tavern, he'd spend his time here at the guard's relaxation room. It wasn't called that officially, of course, but it was a mixture between a break room and a training center. Anyone guarding Frost's palace was expected to be as fit as possible, and supposed to be afforded the relaxations they deserved when they were not on duty.

At least, that was the idea. Nothing had been cleaned in a while, and it wasn't a generally great place to be, but it was an informative one. This wasn't where his royal guard relaxed, of course, their quarters were much better, and in Aya's opinion it was generally not worth the time to try to speak to them, as they assumed a superiority rather than equality because of Ayakon's present training.

Currently before him sat about a few of these guards, some on break and some just hanging around. Two had blasters attached to their arms, and being guards of Frost's palace (albeit definitely not guards of Frost himself), they were all Changelings, albeit ones of lower class. They chattered about unimportant things, familial and social situations mostly. So Aya paid little attention, reading something until a new guard sat down at the table, unclasping and setting aside his own blaster as he let out a rather nasty curse. When he noticed the other guards looking at him, he explained, "Weekly schedules are in. We're all working some pretty messed up hours again this week."

One of the ones with a blaster asked, "No mention of overtime pay yet, I'm guessing?"

A third, one without, laughed wryly, "Overwhat?"

The second spoke again, "Good point."

The first continued as he stretched and relaxed himself. This was likely more a break than getting off-duty for him, "I'm getting pretty tired of it. I'm telling you I'm going to be glad when we finally--" He was nudged into silence and this caused Ayakon to glance up just in time to see one of the other guards motion in his direction.

Aya tilted his head upwards, "What?"

The original speaker shook his head, "Nothing." He glanced at the others and looked as if he was prepared to start up a new conversation.

Ayakon interrupted and turned his attention completely to the group, "No please, go ahead. I'd hate for you to feel as if you need to hold your tongue around me. Speak as if I'm not here. I'm only here to waste time anyway."

There were a few moments of silence as the guards looked around at each other, probably trying to silently decide whether or not to let Ayakon in on whatever they would discuss without him being present, "Well it's just... Look you know how Lord Frost treats some of us right?"

Ayakon shook his head and said, "I'm afraid I can't say that I do. Please elaborate." He had a fair idea of what the grunt was talking about, judging by a couple of things he'd seen, but he was interested in hearing exactly what they thought was wrong.

"We're treated like dirt. Our armor is low-grade, our blasters have a nasty habit of backfiring, we don't get paid nearly as much as his royal guard but we do twice as much work. None of that standing around business, we do actual work. And frankly, a bunch of us are tired of it."

Aya frowned, "Tired of it? You're planning on quitting?"

"Well no." A couple of the guards shifted nervously. They had, rather easily and possibly accidentally, given away a bit too much information. They looked afraid that Aya would get up, call them blasphemers and run to Lord Frost immediately.

When he didn't, another one of them picked up where the original speaker had left off. "You gotta understand, a bunch of us are barely making enough money to feed our families. It's not as simple as he's making it sound. It's getting to be pretty bad and there are only signs that it's getting worse. We've lost about a squad and he refuses to replace, he's just having the rest of us work more without paying anything better. We're being worked to death, to no gain but his own."

Aya comprehended this and nodded as if he agreed, "I have been seeing some of you more often than seems necessary. May I ask, how many of you share this sentiment? How many of you feel treated this way?"

"I don't know. I mean it started with just a few of us here in the guard but... we started talking to some of the police and they're feeling the same way. Some of the servants are being treated even worse, so naturally they feel pretty much the same."

Ayakon leaned forward slightly, his voice getting a bit softer, "How many people total are we talking about? Are we talking tens, dozens, a couple hundred?"

"The latter at least, judging by the last meeting. I mean we don't... we just want to be treated equally." There was still a look of guilt on this Changeling's face. The lower class really did act different than the higher ones. They seemed to actually be aware of what it was like to live without being outrageously rich.

"I understand." Ayakon said, "Trust me, friends, I will keep silent about this." He gave them a smile and they grinned in return. With that, discussion turned to other things again. There was likely more to this, and Aya felt himself compelled to get to the bottom of it. But why?

Several hours later, Ayakon found himself bent over, panting and trying desperately to catch his breath. This was, of course, how his training sessions under Lord Frost ended. As he grasped for breath, muscles aching, one of the Lord's attendants walked up to him, "Bit too much for you, Brumal? Would you like to call it quits?"

Ayakon forced himself to stand and regain his outward composure, "I am perfectly fine. Can I be of assistance?"

"Yes, as it turns out, you finally can." The attendant turned away to leave the room. After a second it occurred to Aya that he needed to be following, so he forced himself to do so. He was escorted through the palace, and the attendant began filling him in as they walked, "It occurs to some of the more important people here that you've been spending some time with some of the riff-raff downstairs. Some of the people are concerned about what sort of things are going on down there."

Ayakon suppressed his look of surprise, keeping a neutral face as he responded off-handedly, "I don't know that I'll be of much use. I'm just looking for a place to sit quietly when I'm not training. I don't pay attention to their nonsense."

"Ah. Well nevertheless, the Captain of the Royal Guard would like to speak with you about a few things." By this time they had arrived in a part of the palace he'd never been. Aya took a moment to look around, he'd been pretty captivated by the conversation and hadn't noticed the surroundings until that point.

It was relatively near the royal guard's break room, but he'd never been down this particular hallway before, much less lead to this room. The attendant motioned him inside, "He will be with you shortly." Aya headed into the room and sat down in one of the chairs opposite the desk in the room.

The attendant began to close the door, but stopped, looked at Ayakon and said, "Keep in mind that nothing that happens within this palace without Lord Frost being aware of it. Nothing."

"Nothing. Understood." Aya turned his attention back to the desk as the attendant actually closed the door this time. He looked it over. It was a pretty nice one, probably made from a very fine material. He closed his eyes and relaxed, waiting for the door to open again. His muscles still ached quite badly, after all. Such were the results of Frost's training.

When it did, a much taller Changeling stepped into the room, dressed in the finest garb of Lord Frost's royal guard. He appeared to be in his first transformation, likely one of the Changelings that preferred to remain in that stage, whether because it was more comfortable or to simply show off.

Aya briefly considered transforming as well, mostly to mock him, but realized that he was probably a bit stronger, and the transforming might earn him a thrashing. Instead, he gave a respectful nod, which was completely ignored as the Captain crossed into his office and moved to sit at the desk.

He attended to some very important paperwork for a few minutes, almost pretending that he didn't realize that Ayakon was in the room until the smaller Changeling cleared his throat. The Captain nodded, acknowledging the request for attention, but finished reading whatever exhaustingly important report he was going over before beginning to speak to Aya. "I trust you know why you're here."

"Your trust is misplaced, sir. I was given a vague approximation of something I should already know by one of Lord Frost's attendants, but that was it." Ayakon crossed his arms. Now he was beginning to feel like his time was being wasted.

"In short, we're aware that you've come into contact with some men that are planning a coup. We don't have very much information, but it seems like your... lower class will allow you to get in with these traitors." He still didn't look up, going over whatever was more important than making eye contact. He did however give a lazy sigh, "We want you to infiltrate this group, get to the center of them and set up a way for us to eliminate this threat at its source."

"I understand." Ayakon nodded. He couldn't put his finger on it, but something felt very wrong about this. This was not the way to go.

"Good." The Captain nodded again, "Contact us with the place and time, I'll have some of my most trustworthy men there for the ambush. Until then, you're dismissed."

Ayakon stood up but didn't move to leave, save for a flickering of his tail.

The Captain was quiet for a little while longer then finally sighed again, "... Is there something else? My time is valuable."

"Sir, if I can find a more diplomatic solution, one that doesn't lead to bloodshed, wouldn't it be more wise to choose that?" Ayakon spoke hesitantly. He wasn't entirely sure where he was going with this.

"You would like to... I'm sorry?" The Captain finally looked up at Ayakon, giving him a look that almost implied that Aya had spoken complete nonsense.

"I mean, wouldn't it look better for Lord Frost's public relations if he was able to negotiate with some of his less pleased underlings than if he obliterated them outright?"

The Captain stared at Ayakon for a moment then finally said, "Negotiate with them, have them killed, turn them into rocks for all I give a damn, Brumal, just get this situation taken care of. Now please get out of my office."

Ayakon frowned, "Yes sir." He stood up and left the room, still trying to figure out what the hell he was planning on doing about this. His body was on autopilot as his mind considered several possibilities that could work. Negotiation? Frost wasn't going to let go of any money anytime soon, but some small changes could allow heads to cool, at least for a little while.

Before he realized it, he was outside of the palace and heading... somewhere. He hurriedly attached his Scouter to his ear, activating it as he'd done since he purchased the thing. No sooner had he done this than the still relatively unfamiliar beeping told him there was an unusually high power level rapidly approaching him. The indicator motioned upwards and so he looked up, and it narrowed in on a figure that happened to be dropping directly on him at the moment. He jumped backwards and the figure stopped short of slamming into the ground, righting itself in midair then landing. "You know too much and have proven to be untrustworthy. I've been sent to get rid of you."

"I don't have time for riddles." Ayakon took a fighting stance, watching his opponent carefully, "Who are you? What do I know too much about?"

"You're taking steps to prevent the coup. Many people have much to gain if Lord Frost falls, and you will not prevent it." The figure charged at him and threw a couple of quick jabs, following it with a hard kick to Aya's chest.

The punches connected, catching the Changeling by surprise, but he jumped, pulling his legs to his chest and rising above his attacker, just barely missing his attack. He countered with a kick straight to the attacker's face, using the momentum to backflip and land on the ground several steps in front of his opponent.

"You are outclassed. Please, I..." He struggled with the words. They felt unnatural coming out of his mouth, almost like a foreign tongue he had just begun learning, "I don't wish to continue this fight. I'd rather not kill you if I don't have to."

"Yeah well, I don't get paid if I don't kill you. Sorry friend, it's just business." He tried to rush at Ayakon again, firing a ki blast from his hand and following it with a couple of quick kicks.

Ayakon knew the attack was coming from the response, and reacted just as the first ki blast was thrown. He vanished, causing the blast and following kicks to miss, and appeared behind his opponent, wrapping an arm around his attacker's neck and tightening his muscles, positioning himself to cut off the attacker's air supply. The would-be assassin struggled with this for as long as he could until he began to lose consciousness. Aya held him for a few moments after he'd stopped struggling, then let him drop to the ground.

He wasn't sure if he'd killed him or simply knocked him unconscious. He lifted off the ground and said to no one, "I would have preferred not to have done that." Then he sped off. He wasn't quite certain where he was going, just yet, but knew that he had to take some steps to prevent anything physical happening between the Royal guard and those that were attempting to revolt.

He located a local police office and, using his credentials as a trainee of Lord Frost's (and a bit of smooth talking implying that he was sent to look for some new recruits for Frost's royal guard), he managed to talk his way into a discussion with some of the off-duty officers hanging around about rumors of unfair treating and how they figured they were affected by it.

Most seemed relatively unphased by this, but one of the officers shifted uneasily when the topic was brought up. The subject was changed after a bit and the conversation lagged on for a while until the officers finally dispersed. All but the uneasy one. Aya turned to go and noticed in his peripheral vision that the officer was following him.

Aya's walk slowed until the officer caught up with him. He walked just behind him for a little bit and eventually the officer said, "What do you know?"

"Too much, apparently." Aya responded smoothly, "I'm afraid this is getting more serious than you believe. I need to speak to whoever is in charge before things get out of hand."

The officer looked around to ensure no one was listening in then said, "Things are already getting out of hand, if you know what I mean, and soon. Why do you need to talk to Roark so badly?"

Roark. A name. Useful. "Because your completely secret operation is no longer completely secret, if you are following me, friend."

"Wait... who knows? We need to move fast. Thanks for telling me, I'll get this information to Roark and--" He turned to walk past Aya, but was stopped by an outstretched arm.

Aya looked to him, "A moment. That's not all. It would really benefit everyone if I could speak to the person organizing this, this Roark."

"Who did you learn all of this from, exactly?"

"A few of the palace guards let me in on the goings-on. The royal guard informed me that there were rumors of the things the lower guards had described and instructed me to find out more."

The officer stared at him with uncertainty. He obviously hadn't been expecting such a blunt answer. Finally he said, "... So then why are you helping us? Shouldn't you be running off to Lord Frost with Roark's name?It was stupid of me to--"

"Yes, a lot of information has been given just a bit too freely, which may be why the royal guard has information about this at all." Aya snapped, "Now if you've any wish to keep this from becoming some sort of all out battle, you'd best tell me how I can contact Roark, and quickly."[/color]

The officer thought about this for a second then rattled off an address to a place just on the outskirts of town, "You can find him there. He's a part of the 2nd unit of the outer courtyard. If you turn on us... there are enough of us..."

"Your threat is out of fear, but registered nonetheless." He placed a hand on the officer's shoulder, his tone softening and he asked, "Why are you doing this, anyway?"

"Because... look I've been working under Frost for fifteen standard years now and conditions keep getting worse. He cares about the upkeep of the PTO and the presentation of his royal guard. As long as everything else is barely functional, he doesn't care about it. Some of the crime here has been getting bad the last few years and any requests we send for help are laughed at. And the crime doesn't come from nowhere, you know. People resort to it out of need. It's just..."

Ayakon nodded, "You're just looking for a little fairness."

The officer nodded, a small smile on his face, "Yeah."

Aya nodded again, keeping his face neutral, "I understand. I'm going now. It was a pleasure speaking to you." He rose off the ground, gave the officer a final wave, and flew off towards the address he was given before.

He arrived fairly late that night, but still at an acceptable visiting hour. He looked around to see if there was another ambush on its way before taking off his scouter and buzzing the door. A few moments later it opened to two rather large aliens armed with blasters. "What do you want?"

"I'm here to speak to Roark. It's rather important."

Both of them grinned and one spoke up, "You're that Changeling that's been training with Frost."

"Please don't waste your time attempting to fight me. I'd rather peacefully speak to Roark and have this taken care of as quickly as possible. If you choose to make me wait, you waste valuable time."

Their grins faded and they looked at each other. After a moment they cleared the way to let him in. Roark's place was a shoddy run-down single bedroom place, covered with maps of Frost's palace and other relevant information to take the Lord down. It startled Ayakon how much information had been gathered before people became aware of it. He almost didn't want to think of what would have happened if he hadn't become aware of the situation. He looked around for the Changeling in charge.

Roark was an odd, small Changeling, who sort of resembled a low-class version of Frieza. He hovered in place as opposed to walking, and stared daggers at Ayakon, "The men at the door work for the headhunter's guild. They are aware of the price I've placed on your head."

"So you're the one that did that." Aya crossed his arms, "This certainly puts our first impressions at a severe disadvantage. I need to speak to you, but first, I'm curious as to why you're so eager to lead this revolt."

Roark grinned, "Because I've finally gathered enough people to stand a chance against Frost's royal guard. If I can topple him, I can take his place and then the planet Frieza will belong to me. None among the Cold clan or any other," He paused for emphasis, trying to be as dramatically threatening as possible, "would be able to question my rule."

"I see." Ayakon nodded. He considered this for a few moments. Roark, it seemed, was the only one doing this out of selfish greed. That could be taken care of. Finally, he said, "Then I'd like to assist, if I could Lord Frost has gotten under my skin one too many times. Would this be acceptable?"

Roark thought for a moment then nodded, "Yes, of course. If you would give me your contact information, I'm sure you could be of use to me." He grinned icily.

"I would certainly be glad to."

A few hours later, Ayakon was back at the Royal guard Captain's office, waiting for him to arrive. When he finally did, Aya didn't waste time with any of the shit from before. He spoke plainly, "I have found the leader of the revolt, but I will not give it up freely."

The Captain glared at Aya, "You understand this could be considered treason?"

"I will not give it up freely because it is my duty to ensure that this sort of situation will not happen again." He stepped forward and placed his hands on the Captain's desk, "The lower class citizens working for Frost require slightly higher pay, upgrades to their armor and weaponry, and for Frost's sake you need to have an acceptable amount of people working at all times."

"These are very brazen--"

"Listen to me, these conditions are what caused this sort of situation to arise in the first place. I'm sure that Lord Frost would rather lose a measly 3% of his profit to provide proper upkeep than to have to deal with annual revolts." Aya said, stepping away from the desk and crossing his arms, "If I am mistaken then that is my fault and I wish you luck finding the leader of this revolt."

"... I will speak to whoever I have to in order to make this happen. If an increase in condition is all that is required to keep those lower class ingrates happy, then it is what we will do. I'm sure Lord Frost will agree with this."

"I figured you would say that." Ayakon handed over the information containing Roark's location as well as some of the specific requirements that had been requested by some of the people he'd spoken to. He turned to go, but before he did he said, "And the palace guard's relaxation room needs renovation. The last time that place was cleaned was during the last clan wars." And he left the room.

He was certain that he'd just effectively killed Roark, and wasn't entirely sure whether any of the demands/suggestions would actually be met. For now, he was certain that this crisis had been temporarily averted. A small part of him hoped that those in need would get what they required, but it was quickly suppressed to the best of his ability. His ability, he was realizing, was becoming less and less. This was quickly becoming a problem.
