Ayakon had made up his mind, and was getting ready to get off of the planet Frieza. He was finishing up one final week of training under Frost, getting as much from it as he could, and then getting the hell off of the planet. He'd recently decided Namek was his first choice, but he'd take pretty much anywhere not owned by the PTO. At this point even the Saiyan empire was looking more alluring. He needed to get away from the temptations of greed and corruption, they were so terribly taunting. He'd completed, by force not his own volition, Frost's little test and earned himself an extremely useful new way of fighting. While it was a wonderful thing to learn, something about learning it from Frost almost tainted the method itself. Nevertheless, that was the final straw for him. He didn't like the number of assassins on this damned planet.

He was presently waiting out his time in one of the taverns he'd especially managed not to get himself kicked out of, enjoying drink after drink while wasting time. He'd dismissed Suiji again and instructed him not to return this time. He wanted some actual time alone, perhaps to just get drunk and forget. It was impossible to forget when people kept talking about things. Of course, he'd realized, it was impossible to forget anything when no one was there to inconvenience (or otherwise distract) him either. Battle. Battle seemed to be the only time he could forget his mind and focus on the task at hand. Perhaps he could go out and find himself a brawl. He thought about this for a few moments and then ordered another drink...

A few hours and a few drinks later found Ayakon wandering the lower streets looking for a group of thugs that he could murder in self defense, or something of that nature. In his drunken state, he rationalized this as somehow okay, since those people were probably bad people. So hurting them would be alright... This was all fitting in to this new turn he was leafing over. Or whatever that phrase was. Still, he could get away with punishing some thugs. Punishing them until they... died. That seemed to somehow make sense. Right?

He continued walking, eyes cast downward as he tried to reason with himself while not quite certain of what conclusion he wanted to come to. His gate was lazy, and even his thought-speech somewhat slurred and blurry. Quite a few minutes later and a lack of thugs to shove around, he decided to screw the entire thing and head back home.

He turned about in place, using his tail to balance himself since his legs didn't seem to be capable of the job right now. As he did, he slammed straight into a brick wall. Or at least what felt like one. It was cold as stone anyway. He took a step back and looked up, realizing that someone, not something, was standing before him. "Who in--" He looked up to face whoever stood in front of him, considering fighting who or whatever it was, until he got a good look at it.

The creature, very obviously a demon, was at least a foot taller than him, making it a massive seven feet tall. It appeared masculine, was a deep shade of red and well muscled. He was dressed in a dark blue cloak, but beneath it was a black body suit and what looked like it may have been the hilt of a sword. The demon stared down at Ayakon with a completely serious face, as if Aya had just committed some sort of brutal sin against him. A feeling of pure undiluted evil, the likes of which Aya'd never felt before, radiated from this being. For the briefest of moments, even in his inebriated state, he felt fear. The being spoke with a voice like obsidian, "You are Ayakon, son of Aisu, of the Brumal clan." He stated it as fact, not a question.

Aya took another step back, nodding hesitantly. He was aware that it was a statement, but felt the need to respond as if inquired. His voice wavered, and he couldn't bring himself to put on the confidant visage he normally wore, but at least he managed to get his words straight, "I am. Who, may I ask, are you? And how could you possibly know my father?" He looked the creature up and down, trying to sound as threatening as he could and absolutely failing.

The demon answered what it wanted, ignoring the rest, "My name is not important. What is important is that you stand at a crossroads." He took a step forward, closing the space between the two. He placed his hand on Ayakon's forehead and in an instant the Changeling felt himself cured of his inebriated state, even missing any sort of headache. "You will want to be of right mind for this." Though he wanted to, Ayakon couldn't move back. Something about this creature, to him, felt incredibly wrong.

Once he was certain that Aya's head had cleared completely, the demon continued with his original answer, "It is my job to ensure that you make the correct decision. Your potential is not infinite, but neither is it small enough to be of no consequence. So I was sent to give you the choice, heir of Brumal, to continue on your current path, or turn to the right direction. We will take a journey now and then you will be offered the choice of great power. You are prepared."

It took Aya a moment to get over the fact that he could suddenly think straight, which consequently hindered his ability to actually think straight. Finally he managed to ask, "... How? How can you possibly do this?" Ayakon frowned, "What is the right direction, how am I supposed to know the difference?"

The demon did not answer his question directly, but said, "Time will make things clear. First, you will be given the opportunity to look over your decisions and see where you acted according to your heart's wishes, and where you acted as certain others thought you should."

"But that doesn't--" Before Ayakon could finish, the demon silenced him with a glare. He placed a massive hand over the Changeling's eyes and everything went black.

When the hand was removed, Ayakon saw a familiar sight, but from a brand new perspective. He was on an empty road somewhere between White City and Frost's Palace, where the fight to prevent the Ambassador's assassination had taken place. But this time he wasn't where he had been before. He was watching the scene from the sidelines, even seeing his own self, arrogant as he appeared. He looked around for the demon and found that it was standing a few steps behind him, "You question your decisions here. You wonder if you would change them if you had the chance." The demon didn't seem one to ask questions, it simply made statements.

It took a minute for Aya's mind to wrap around what he was seeing and how he was seeing it. All he could manage to stammer was a, "Wh-what..."

If he was going to be able to add anything else, the demon interrupted him with a simple command, "Eyes forward."

Aya turned to watch his past self from the third person perspective staring down at what he knew to be the child traveling with the ambassador. He could see the reaction on his former self, the moment when everything changed. He noticed something that he didn't remember doing, giving a small smile to the child, as if trying to comfort the young creature. Then came the parts he remembered, the growl of frustration and the sudden attack on the unsuspecting thugs.

His fists clenched when his other self rushed to help the alien guard and Suiji. He wanted to help, to dispatch of them even quicker, but he didn't see this as possible at the moment. The thugs, weak as they were, were quickly taken care of nevertheless. The demon very subtly glanced down at Ayakon, hardly a movement at all with still no emotion on his face. For whatever reason, however, this tiny movement was enough to cause Aya to feel like he needed to voice his thoughts, to explain things from his current perspective as he watched his past.

"My only regret is that I did not move to help my companions quicker. I shouldn't have contemplated such a devious action in the first place. Hypocritical as that may be, as I am also aware of my current profession, I could not ruthlessly kill for money. Is that what this journey is? To force myself to watch these moments of indecision?"

He received no answer to the questions. Aya looked back and saw his former self and the others begin to fly away, with Suiji stopping to call in the royal guard as he had been instructed. Without giving a direct reply, the demon merely said, "We are done here." then he placed a hand over Aya's eyes again, causing everything to fall into darkness once again.

Aya wrenched the demon's extremely large hand from covering his eyes and saw that now he was back at Polar's tournament. He felt sick for a moment, as he'd sworn that he'd never returned, but was able to suppress this feeling as he hadn't come here of his own volition. The demon stood behind him and casting a massive shadow that engulfed the Changeling. "You have been here before. You conquered this place and left stronger than ever. You reached a new peak of ruthlessness in this building. But you have questioned your decisions since then."

Ayakon nodded. Again, he was aware that this wasn't a question, but felt the need to contribute something. He was still trying to wrap his mind around the fact that he was back in Polar's tournament. "What are these connections? Why are you showing me this? Am I supposed to do something?"

"You can do as you please. I am merely giving you opportunity." With the most subtle of nods, he inclined his head towards the arena where Aya saw himself fighting the alien Zornak. It had just started and no blows had been thrown yet. Without conscious thought, he slowly began to  walk towards the ring, hesitantly at first, but once he found that no one was stopping him or even seemed to be able to see him, he hurried forward. This fight had been very quick, he recalled, so he had oh so little time.

He ran into the arena and yelled, "Stop!" But the other him obviously could not hear, because he continued fighting, now standing over a quickly defeated opponent in an extremely arrogant stance. Ayakon noticed the small frown on his former self's face and realized that what he'd told himself was true. He did want to prevent Zornak's slow demise. But now he understood that giving him a quick one wasn't the best thing he could do. There was another option that hadn't come to him in the heat of the moment, one that was quite a bit better.

The fight was nearing its fatal end. He moved to physically stop his past self from finishing the deed, holding out a hand to stop the final blow. Instead of halting the tail swipe, however, he found that the two selves merged. His consciousness was inside of his former self, standing in front of Zornak, who was on his knees and ready (but not willing) to be killed. His tail was frozen in mid-air, a few centimeters from ending the alien. He wavered for a moment, trying to grasp the change in perspective, then finally relaxed his tail and said to Zornak, "Please yield."

Zornak hesitated then said, "Y-yeah of course." He continued to cower, closing his eyes and looking as if he feared that Aya was going to decide to finish him off anyway. As a last ditch effort he offered, "I give up. You win this fight. You know I can't beat you."

Aya smiled and held a hand out to the alien, ignoring the boos of the crowd and helping him to his feet. "I know. But it doesn't mean you should have to stay here. Once I win, I'm taking you with me."

As they walked back towards the benches where the fighters sat between matches, he glanced over at the bleachers and saw the golden eyes of the demon staring at him. Everything stopped where it was and in an instant he was back at the demon's side. He could see himself walking with the alien back to the benches, and seemed invisible to the crowd again. "That is a very big change." The demon said, with no emotion behind his voice. "We are to move on now..."

"I don't know if that would have helped. I don't know if that's what I was supposed to do. And I'm still not sure why exactly you--" He was silenced when a hand was placed over his eyes darkness engulfed him once again.

"Would you stop doing that?!" He forcefully pulled the hand from his face and felt the immediate chil of his new surroundingsl. He was standing in the blistering cold, where just a few days earlier he'd fought the twin assassins. His past self stood to his left, and the twins stood to his right. Opposite him, on the other side of the battlefield, stood the demon that had brought him here. Still not done complaining, he offered, "At least a damned warning beforehand!"

The demon said nothing and looked between past-Ayakon and the twins. "You have had no time to question your decisions here. At least not consciously. You let your rage get the best of you and you slaughtered both of these aliens. You wonder where your fury was directed, whether you were angry at them, the situation, or your Lord Frost. Within the recesses of your mind, you wonder if those lives were taken in vain. They were honorable men in life."

Aya didn't wait for him to finish. He stepped into himself, taking control of his past once again. He was uncertain if he was changing history or just playing a new role in some powerful being's twisted game. Nevertheless he was determined to make the choices he wished he'd made before.

He looked at the twins and held out a hand to stop them, dropping his fighting stance, "I do not wish to fight you. I know that I will win. You are strong, there are no doubts there." He looked between them, determined to meet their eyes individually instead of treating them as one being, "But this will not end in my death, and you have done nothing to earn your own. You have the opportunity to leave now, with your lives intact. Please take it."

The twins looked at each other then at him. One of them said simply, "We have no choice. This is the only option for us." And they launched their attack anew.

The fight went the same, and became a blur in Ayakon's mind. He stepped outside of his past self and watched it from a third person perspective. He was surprised what he could learn from watching himself fight, once he took the time to do so. He considered stepping in before he transformed, but knew that this was the only way he would be able to defeat these two opponents, so he left his former self to the fighting. In all honesty, he didn't want to have to commit those murders again. Everything went as before, ending in the death of the two assassins and more blood on Ayakon's hands. He frowned at the idea that this was something he could not change.

However, when Suiji asked him about the option of burial, Aya realized the opportunity to make a difference, if only an insignificant one. He quickly stepped back into himself, taking control. He was surprised to be able to once again feel the fury he had felt after that battle and calmed himself immediately. Once he was under control again, he said to his underling, "Yes. They deserve the honor they gave. We will bury them together and give them peace in the Otherworld." He opened his mouth to fire a mouth blast, aiming to clear a hole in the ground, but stopped just short of it and began to dig with his hands instead. There would be no meal before meeting Lord Frost.

He removed himself from the altered scene once the deed was done and looked at the demon, who had been standing there the entire time, motionless despite the heavy winds. "You are a disappointment, Ayakon. You could have been a great asset to Lucifer, and you could have been so much more. You should have toyed with that alien before killing him, you know it would have been easier and more beneficial to murder the ambassador amidst the confusion of the battle, and this..." He motioned to the current scene, two new mounds in the snow, each with a single stone atop it, "This is plain foolishness. But I was instructed to give you these opportunities, these chances to unleash your rage and let yourself go. Yet you chose the coward's way. It is a pity."

"I chose the way that seemed best to me." Ayakon said, standing straight with a certainty he hadn't felt in a while. No longer fearing this demon, he felt no need to shirk away from it. "If you consider that cowardice, then you and I have very differing opinions."

The demon, finally showing emotion, laughed mockingly, "Did you think that was all? Did you think all I would do is show you three recent events and let you play hero? That is not all. We are going back a little bit longer to remind you why you wanted to gain strength in the first place. Perhaps a clear reminder will change your weak mind." Before Ayakon could move or react, the demon rushed at him. Aya never saw his hand move, only the darkness.

And it was years ago. At least twenty standard years before the present time. Ayakon stood in a room that was his own as a child. It was spacious and lavish, the envy of any child. Any toy, any game that he'd wanted was his, he was spoiled as he could be. He looked down at his childhood self and couldn't help but smile. The demon was there as well, of course, so he spoke aloud, "I was quite a handsome little fellow." He looked up at the demon, "Why exactly are we here?"

The demon ignored the comment completely, keeping his gaze perfectly forward and said, "To remind you why you want to bring pride to the Brumal name. To remind you why power is important."

He turned to look back at his younger self, "At this age? Look at me, I was barely doing basic fighting drills. I don't think I would remember--"

The demon held a hand out for silence, and for whatever reason, Ayakon obeyed.

From the other room, Ayakon could overhear a voice he hadn't heard in quite a while. It was the voice of his father, Aisu. He was generally a confident man, as prideful and boastful of a Changeling as Ayakon had ever seen, but as Ayakon could hear now, his voice was filled with fear. It seemed he was speaking with someone whose side of the conversation could not be heard, whether because they spoke softly or were not in the room at all. Aya listened carefully to the one-sided conversation.

"N-no I understand sir. I assure you my men are working as fast as-- Yes of course we can speed up our work. Pardon? Double, sir? We couldn't do that unless we-- Well yes I understand that but if we hire any one else, I would risk losing profit for my par--Yes sir, that is more important. No sir. Yes--yes sir. Thank you sir."

Ayakon was frozen. The memory came to him as he was watching it, and his eyes grew wide. Why had his father been so afraid? Who could he possibly have been so afraid of?

"You hear the fear in his voice, Ayakon. It is as you heard it before." The demon said. He paused for a moment to give Ayakon a chance to react, but the Changeling was still in living stasis, "As a child it was barely but a fleeting thing to you, yet it made such a great impact. That one figure, that your own father, could be so afraid of another Changeling or anyone else, one who had much greater power than him. It made you want to be strong. So that you would never have to do the same."

Ayakon regained a sense of himself and crossed his arms, his face distorted in anger. He opened his mouth to shout but stopped, calmed himself and said, "And that reason has not changed. But to sacrifice myself for that power would render the power itself void. I do not want the power you offer, not in the way you offer it. I will not succumb to the rage that threatens me, I will walk a path unlike the Changelings before me. The Brumal clan will be powerful in its own right, I will make sure of this. But it will be on my terms, not by mere ruthlessness for the sake of itself. I'll not do things that other Changelings have done simply because other Changelings have done them."

"Brave words. Brave, stupid words." The demon's emotionless tone was disappearing, and he was rapidly growing upset. This was clearly not how he was expecting this to go. "You have seen the some of the worst of your recent past, and though I think you know we have only skimmed the surface of your... personal history..." His eyes gleamed with knowledge but before Ayakon could even begin to be scared, he continued without elaborating, "... it is fruitless to continue to show you what you already know. Your mind is made up. But I will not release you from this reality, not freely. You have given your mind to me and you must fight to regain it."

As he said this their surroundings twisted and distorted. It was clear why the demon had covered Aya's eyes before this, the mutation of the surroundings was nauseating to watch. It grew in some places and collapsed in others, becoming a very simple place. The ground below was a flat dull grey stone that Aya didn't recognize, stretching as far as the eye could see. The sky above was a blanket as black as pitch, peppered with piercings of starlight that gave the entire area an unnatural dimness.

"This is new." Aya commented. He looked around, turning his head at first, then his entire body to search for his "guide". The demon was, for once, nowhere to be found. "And it appears as if I'm trapped here." As soon as he had done a full circle and turned back to where he had originally be standing, he saw himself, in his first transformation, standing before him, about three meters away.

It looked exactly like him at first glance, but when he focused, he noticed it was... distorted somehow. His normally grey skin tone was a much darker shade, bordering on outright black, with a glowing tinge to it, the same that the starlight had. The plates that guarded parts of his body as with all Changelings, normally maroon, were now an opaque sanguine red, brimming with the same unnatural gleam. Aya took a step back.

He stared at it and it stared right back at him. His sovereign indigo irises stared into ones that at first appeared to be of the same color, but as Aya met the creature's gaze he saw only pits of emptiness within its irises. It took him a moment, but he realized who, or rather what he was looking at. This was the personification of the darkness within him. This was the feeling Aya had at the back of his mind, in the pit of his stomach, every time he'd killed someone, every time he'd done something against his own moral code. It smiled at him.

"Well?" It was the voice of the demon. Aya glanced around but saw that there was still no physical form, [b"Aren't you going to try to conquer your darkness? Aren't you going to try to defeat the evil within you?"[/b]

Ayakon folded his arms and put his feet together, one at a slight angle as per usual. His tail swished behind him in his normal elegant yet slightly arrogant fashion, "No." He said sincerely, "I am not ready to defeat it. I am not powerful enough to do it yet. But I am aware that it is there, and that is enough. Now I think you have about wasted enough of my time, demon. You have failed in your mission, or perhaps succeeded, I do not care. Return me to my drunken state, allow me to awaken as if this were a terrible nightmare so that I may be on my way."

It was not the demon that spoke, but his darker self. In a voice much like his own but somehow distorted, the shadow-Changeling said, "You will wish that things had gone differently one day. We will meet again." The surroundings started to nauseatingly change and swirl once again, but his darker self didn't leave. All it did was say, "Until then..." and tapped its own skull. His skull. The image burned itself into Aya's mind as everything went black for the final time.

When are we eating?
Ayakon awoke the next morning in his own bed with a pounding headache. He was very nauseous, either from the aftereffects of all of the drinking, or from being forced to watch what he perceived to be reality altering twice within the span of approximately ten minutes. The room was far too bright, and the noises outside far too loud, both of which hinted towards the former, but there were other things that hinted towards the latter. He remembered everything and nothing, from his own perspective and the third. It could have all been a dream, an alternate theoretic reality or he could have actually changed his own past. He wasn't aware if what he'd done differently with the demon had mattered, and after a moment's thought he decided he didn't care to find out and prove one thing true and another false.

He reasoned that if Zornak was now alive, then long may he live. If he'd buried the honorable assassins, then he had done them the service they deserved. If none of those things happened... at least he was aware of the decisions he should have made, and could keep himself from making the same mistakes in the future. He'd resisted the demon's temptations and though he was uncertain if he'd made a new enemy as a result of the event, he figured that he'd solidified some things about himself, which was probably a pretty good thing.

He cracked his neck as he slowly sat up, placing a hand on his head and letting out a low groan. All of these things were possibles and probables, and could be saved for another time. Of one thing, he was definitely certain: he needed something to calm this throbbing pain in his skull, and the room needed to stop its damned spinning.
