Hello, my name is Letice X. The month of February marks Black History Month, where we (in America at least), celebrate the contributions African Americans have made to the culture as a whole. For the first week we shall be celebrating a well known hero: "We declare our right on this earth...to be a human being, to be respected as a human being, to be given the rights of a human being in this society, on this earth, in this day, which we intend to bring into existence by any means necessary." Malcolm X's Impact On Society On 21 February 1965 Malcolm X was shot dead minutes before he was about to address a rally in Harlem, New York. As with the firebombing of his home a week earlier, the finger was automatically pointed at the Nation of Islam with whom Malcolm had split the previous year. Threatened by his radical ideas and appeal to young blacks, the FBI had Malcolm X under surveillance. Speculation continues that the capitalist state itself used its own agents to eliminate their number one public enemy. Of what there is no doubt is that after the murder the American state drew a huge sigh of relief. One of the most vocal, uncompromising opponents of their system had apparently been silenced. However history continues to show that revolutionary ideas can never be silenced. The assassination of Malcolm X spawned the Black Panther Party. In Seize The Time, the story of the Black Panthers, Co-founder Bobby Seale tells us the tremendous effect the killing of Malcolm X had on him: "I got mad, I put my fist through a window. I told them all, I'll make my own self into a Malcolm X, and if they want to kill me they'll have to kill me...That a big change for me...Malcolm X had an impact on everybody like that". The next year the Black Panther Party was formed. They represent the highest point in the civil rights movement that engulfed the US for over two decades. They took Malcolm's message of self-defense for blacks and translated it into action. During the 1970s they became a focal point for young blacks wanting to fight back against the racist police and state in America. They inspired youth and blacks internationally with their preparedness to fight racism and police brutality. |

Yeah too bad the Black Panthers turned into a prejudice group themselves and are extremely violent against non-blacks. |

Eh, not really. There were white people in the Black Panther Party. How many blacks were in the KKK? Besides, even if what they did was wrong at the time (which some of it was), looking back in hindsight, the idea of equal rights is all that matters. Their philosophy was "by any means necessary" because they were tired of their friends and family being murdered in cold blood for being a different skin color. Sometimes innocents get swept up but that's what happens when you corner an animal. |

Learn the history before you romanticize the Black Panthers. There are prejudice little fucks under the banner of Black Panthers. And there were back when it started. Also when your distrust of police causes you to murder your own people then you are no longer able to claim you're doing the right thing. Oh and the Anti-Defamation League and The Southern Poverty Law Center consider the New Black Panthers as a hate group. In addition the original Black Panthers were barely indistinguishable from gangs. They did drug trade, prostitution and extortion. No movement that claims innocent lives being taken is something you have to accept is any better than the group they are trying to be equal to. Nor are they proving they are not the animals the racists claim them to be. I'm sorry but I don't take kindly to people romanticizing prejudice hate groups. Martin Luther King Jr. would feel such a gut-wrenching pain to see such things. |

So? Prejudices exists within all groups, and I stated in my post before that they weren't 100% legit. They weren't historic freedom fighters who epitomized non-violent protests and demonstrations. Their slogan was "By any means necessary." What does that mean? It means if they attack us, we attack back. If they are willing to kill their own to get to us, then sometimes we might have to do the same. If they kill our kids, and rape our women, then we will do it too. That's the underlying philosophy as a whole. Now what that means to you, and what it means to me are two completely different things. You take it at face value, saying that they were no better than the Klan or anyone else. I see it as a stance against their oppressors. At the end of the day, the KKK wanted blacks to be UNDER them. At the end of the day, the Party wanted blacks to be EQUAL to whites. Hell, some even wanted BETTER treatment. The Black Panther Party chose a different, much more violent route to achieve the goal of equality. We can't fault them for that. All we can ask is, does the ends justifies the means? In this case, to me, it does. Because without them, blacks probably wouldn't even be viewed as equals at all or many problems that existed then would occur now on much larger proportions. But, this isn't even about The Black Panther Party. This is about Malcolm X. Though you can argue that his words inspired them, he didn't live to see them blossom and thus cannot be held accountable. |

In honor of Black History Month, let's not derail this thread toward a debate about right and wrong. I would like to see other historical figures discussed for their positive impact rather than the negativity it might've led to. |

Ironic considering civil rights is a debate about right and wrong in and of itself. Since I lived in Montgomery, Alabama and went to the Rosa Parks museum I submit her as someone who got her point across without violence and with the utmost dignity. Without her we probably wouldn't have had the Montgomery Bus Boycott. While having your pick of where to sit on a bus may seem minor, it's the small steps that count towards the bigger picture. Even though the bus assigned seats (nor was she actually in a whites only seat) was not a law she was still arrested for civil disobedience. "When he saw me still sitting, he asked if I was going to stand up, and I said, 'No, I'm not.' And he said, 'Well, if you don't stand up, I'm going to have to call the police and have you arrested.' I said, 'You may do that.'" She recalled that she asked, "Why do you push us around?" The officer's response as she remembered it was, "I don't know, but the law's the law, and you're under arrest." Parks, along with the up and coming Dr. Martin Luther King Junior, fought in Montgomery, Alabama to improve treatment of black people everywhere. In 1994 as a special snub to the KKK that had applied for an Adopt-A-Highway the stretch was named Rosa Parks Highway in honor of her. This is just one of many examples where what she did was remembered decades after the incident. When she was 91 in the early 00's she fell behind on rent for her apartment. When it became publicized that the Rosa Parks was about to be evicted the manager of the building publicly announced he would waive the fees for her. Special treatment, perhaps, but a poignant reminder of how important she was to people. Parks after her death became the second person to be laid in honor in the Capitol Rotunda. She was also the first woman and second black person to lie in honor, as is. The woman did as much for the civil rights of black people as she did for women. Many black women have mentioned Rosa Parks as inspiration and the reason they got to the position they got to. Rosa Parks 1913-2005 |

I admire the fact that they have such a thing in the US (even though we europeans are in fact the main cause for african americans to even exist), yet sadly in europe there is no such thing, mainly because in our social community we "think" we're all equal, but we're not. Malcom X was an inspiration to his community and will continue to be so, which is why I believe they're right to place him amongst the great like Ghandi. About the violence and shit revolving around the struggle for equality amongst the people... Every fight for independance was with violence and was not the struggle of the afro americans to be equal, nothing more than a fight for independance? |

I agree with you bro, but I also see no problem with a spirited debate on a difference of opinion. If we disagree with how things were done, then so be it, but at the end of the day the desired result (for the most part) was achieved. |

People of great importance should be remembered and acclaimed constantly, not taught about and mentioned in reserved instances. Unfortunately, Black History Month is an affirmation of America's lingering racist tendencies. |

Oh, on the contrary. This definitely will not be the first nor the last time out of the year or many years to come that Malcolm X's name, as well as others such as MLK, Muhammad Ali, George Washington Carver, and etc's names will be mentioned. However, this is just a time to reflect on the sacrifices that great black men and woman made for equality. Sort of like Independence's Day. We, technically, celebrate it everyday, but there is a certain day out of the year where we come to remembrance. |
